James ‘Red’ Smith

WYNNE — James Edward “Red” Smith, 92 of Wynne passed away Friday, July 25.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Kernodle Funeral Home with burial in Harris Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 in Kernodle Funeral Home.

Curtis Vandergriff

POCAHONTAS — Curtis Vandergriff, 89, passed away Saturday, July 26, at his home.

He was preceded by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Faye; four sons, Leo, Perry and Roger Vandergriff, all of Pocahontas, and Leonard Vandergriff of Fairfield Bay; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was a member of Church of God and a minister for 60 years.

Visitation will be Monday night from 5-8 in the McNabb Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel with Carl Massey officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery.

Billy Joe Collins Sr.

HORSESHOE LAKE — Billy Joe Collins Sr., 66, of Horseshoe Lake passed away Friday, July 25, 2008, at the VA Hospital at Memphis.

He was an Army veteran and a member of the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Anita Collins; his brother, Marshal Lee Collins; and his parents, Clayton Marshal Collins and Sarah Emeline Parnell.

He is survived by one son, Billy Collins Jr. of Horseshoe Lake; two daughters, Melissa Collins of Florida and Susan Clayton and husband Bart of Memphis; one sister, Sarah Lois Grace of Michigan; one brother, Jim Collins of Ravenden; and his niece and caregiver, Debbie Anderson.

Visitation will be Tuesday in Roller-Citizens Funeral Home at West Memphis from 6-8 p.m.

The service will be Wed­nesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with interment following in Crittenden Memorial Park at Marion.

Marie Couch

JONESBORO — Marie Couch, 67, of Jonesboro died Sunday in Memphis.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Emerson Funeral Home.

Raymond England Jr.

PARAGOULD — Raymond Charles England Jr., 35, of Paragould died Friday, July 25, as a result of an automobile accident.

Raymond was born Sept. 2, 1952, at Paragould. He was employed at England Auto Sales and was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church.

Raymond was preceded in death by his mother, Christine Mae Duke England.

Survivors include his fiancée, Kelly Kemp; father, Raymond England Sr.; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Penny and Rex Morton and Cindy and Bill Kienbusch, all of Paragould.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-9 in Heath Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Laramie Lequieu officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Arkansas School for the Deaf, 2400 West Markham St., Little Rock 72205.

Lorette D. German

JONESBORO — Lorette D. Waleszonia German, 81, of Jonesboro, formerly of Murfreesboro died Sunday morning at St. Bernards Medical Center at Jonesboro.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Thompson Funeral Home of Trumann.

Laverne Howard

NEWPORT — Laverne Howard, 79, of Newport died Saturday, July 26.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Euwin Howard; son, Boyce Howard; and sister, Johnnie Grabowski.

Survivors include sons, Danny Howard and Eugene Howard, both of Newport, and Terry Howard of Jonesboro; daughters, Belinda Baker of Newport, Beverly Turner of Little Rock and Twala Nance of Jonesboro; brother, Jerry Garland of Jonesboro; sister, Jetta Bodgen of Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. today in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Balch-Johnston Cemetery.

Edward David ‘Ed’ Larson

JONESBORO — Edward David “Ed” Larson died at his home on Saturday, July 26, from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was 71.

Born at Berkeley, Calif., on Sept. 15, 1936, he lived in San Francisco until 1960. He served 30 years in the Army with the military Intelligence Group, which brought him to Jonesboro in 1978. Larson worked at Arkansas State University for 10 years as a locksmith.

He was very active with the Lions, belonging to the University Heights Lions Club with 30-plus years in active service. He was instrumental in organizing the car show, which is the club’s main fund-raiser. Ed was very active with the Mid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service. He was a board member of Dyeann’s House in Jonesboro. Ed lived in Destin, Fla., where he became district governor of District 35-F from 1999-2000.

He moved back to Jonesboro in 2002. He worked for Wal-Mart for several years.

Ed was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 21 in Jonesboro. He was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross and an active member of the Volunteer Council for the Human Development Center.

Larson was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Larson and Isabella Larson Boss of California.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Marie Larson; son, Donald Larson, his wife Stephanie and grandsons, Kamps and Connor, all of Jonesboro; daughter, Leah Ann Larson Humphrey, her husband Gary and grandsons York and Marshall, all of Eads, Tenn.; daughter, Ann Marie Larson Hatcher, her husband Donnie and grandson Dylan and granddaughter Lauren, all of Jonesboro; sister, Ellen Boss Reed, niece Erin Reed Poor and nephews Kevin Reed, both of Kirkland, Wash., and Tim Reed of Northfolk, Va.

Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight in Emerson Funeral Home.

There will be a Mass in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Wood celebrating. Interment will be in the military Cemetery at Little Rock and will be announced at the Mass.

Active pallbearers will be Donald Larson, Gary Humphrey, York Humphrey, Donnie Hatcher, Pat Snodgrass and Eric Grant.

Honorary pallbearers will be the University Heights Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1702.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Pippenger, who was so kind, thoughtful and understanding during Ed’s illness, and the Crittenden Regional Hospital-Home Health Group, they were so supportive and kind. A special thank you to our nurse, Ashley Lloyd, and our aide, Betty Lucas; God sent you to us at our time of need. We love you.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Ed’s name to the building fund at Blessed Sacrament Church.

Mary Sue Redd

BENTON — Mary Sue Redd of Benton, formerly of Harrisburg, departed this life on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Benton at the age of 91.

She was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Tennessee, the daughter of Thomas Hugh Williams and Lillie “Irby” Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenfield Baptist Church near Harrisburg.

She was a former member of the Languille Home Demonstration Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlework.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Redd, in 1971; a son, Henry “Buddy” Redd; a daughter, Rose Anne Childers; a brother, Travis Williams; and a sister, Rebecca Harris.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole James of Benton and Nancy McGee and her husband Dr. Lynn McGee of West Memphis; brother, Irby Williams of Bartlett, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Susan King, Jeff James, Hank Redd, Sara Priebe, Mary Anne Parker and Elizabeth Childers; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Weston Funeral Service Chapel at Harrisburg. Interment will follow in Bolivar Cemetery near Harrisburg.

Friends may visit at the funeral home tonight from 5-8.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the charity of your choosing.

Lillian Vallie Long Shaver

NEWPORT — Lillian Vallie Long Shaver, 83, of Newport, formerly of Alexandria, Va., died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Jonesboro.

She is survived by two daughters, Jean Gibbs and husband Jimmy of Newport, and Sue Snell and husband Rick of Bastrop, Texas; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Lou Butterfield officiating. Interment will be Friday at Alderson Cemetery at Alderson, W.Va.

Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight in the funeral home.
