Betty Marcum

WYNNE — Mrs. Betty Marcum, 75, of Wynne passed away Monday afternoon, Aug. 25, at her home.

Funeral services will be today at 10 a.m. in Kernodle Funeral Home at Wynne with burial in Harris Chapel Cemetery.

Mary Alice Salmons

JONESBORO — Mary Alice Salmons, 91, of Jonesboro died Monday evening, Aug. 25, at Craighead Nursing Center.

Born in Valley View, she was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family and cooking. She was a lifelong active member of Christian Valley Christian Church where she was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of the Home Extension Club.

Mrs. Salmons is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J.D. and Inez Salmons; grandchildren, Stan Salmons and Sherry Moody and her husband Greg, all of Jonesboro. She is also survived by her niece, Janice Lamberson Browning; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doss Salmons; her daughter, Martha Sue Salmons; her parents, Herman and Hannah Jones Salmons; six sisters, Hattie Segler, Nona Ergle, Marie Moss, Helen Belk, Elsie McDaniel and Wilma McDaniel; and one brother, Homer McDaniel Sr.

Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. in McDaniel Cemetery with Mitch Ford and Pat James officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be Doyle Pete Yarbrough, Joe Turney, Greg Moody, Russell Hendrix, Tony Files and Donnie Hauge.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Christian Valley Christian Church.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 before services in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that lasting memorials be made to Christian Valley Christian Church Building Fund, 2016 Valley View Drive, Jonesboro 72404.

Vera Lois Thomas

CORNING — Vera Lois Thomas, 82, of Corning passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center at Paragould.

She was born March 11, 1926, at Pollard and was the daughter of the late Henry and Annie Ozier Dunlap.

She was united in marriage to Clarence E. “Speedy” Thomas on Nov. 25, 1945.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Speedy” Thomas; her daughter, Carolyn Wise; her brothers, Edward Dunlap, Cecil Dunlap, Dell Dunlap and Deloyd Dunlap; and her sisters, Meadie Conyers, Lela Brady and Lucille Dunlap.

Survivors include her sons, Jackie Thomas and wife Betty of Corning, and Robert Thomas and wife Regina of Paragould; four grandchildren, Kevin Evans of Marion, Ill., Anjannette Conner and husband Craig of Katy, Texas, Shelly Tracer and husband Scott of Rector, Jackie Thomas Jr. and wife LeAnne of Montgomery, Ala.; 11 great-grandchildren, Tara Woods and husband John of Bono, Jared Williams of Success, Blake Tracer of Rector, Dakota Evans of Marion, Brittney Tracer of Rector, Haley Conner of Katy, Madison Williams of Paragould, Cordell Thomas of Montgomery, Luke Conner of Katy, Austin Thomas of Montgomery and Elizabeth Thomas of Montgomery; one great-great-grandchild, Hayden Woods of Bono; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Sunny Williams officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery at Pollard.

Pallbearers will be Gary Dunlap, Scott Tracer, Steve Williams, Jackie Thomas Jr., Jared Williams and Blake Tracer, with Bobby Tracer as an honorary pallbearer.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott will be in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation is tonight at 6.

Vida Patricia Watson

TYRONZA — Vida Patricia Watson, 76, of Tyronza died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, in Arkansas Heart Hospital at Little Rock.

She was of the Pentecostal faith and preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Watson; and son, Ricky Watson.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Mabry of Sedalia, Mo.; brother, Joe Sullivan of Marked Tree; sister, Mimie Brown of Trumann; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 in Murphy Funeral Home at Marked Tree.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Gwen Hooker officiating. Burial will follow in Tyronza Cemetery.

Michael Earl Baskerville

NEWNAN, Ga. — Michael Earl Baskerville, 55, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at his home in Newnan, Ga.

Michael was born and grew up in Bowling Green, Ky. In 1989 he moved his family to Jonesboro, where he was employed with Lincoln Pentair and Hytrol Conveyor for 18 years.

Michael was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a fourth-degree Knights of Columbus, an Elk, a scoutmaster for Troop 4 and a Silver Beaver in the Boy Scouts of America. Above all, he was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Lee Baskerville of Newnan; four children, Tyler Pleas Baskerville and Michael Adam Baskerville, both of Conway, Christopher Jones of St. George, Utah, and Logan Jones of Jonesboro; and four grandchildren, Jack Alexander Jones and Noah Christopher Jones of St. George, Dalton Logan Jones and Gaven Lee Jones of Jonesboro.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Ramsey, and a sister, Sandy McDermott.

Services will be held for Michael at 2 p.m. Saturday in Blessed Sacrament Church.

Lasting memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America or Blessed Sacrament School Endowment Fund.

Jessie C. Blansett

TRUMANN — Jessie C. “Short” Blansett on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, the Lord reached down his hand and brought Short Blansett to his heavenly home.

There he joined his wife, Verna Blansett; mother and father, Joe and Cora Blansett; two brothers; and four sisters.

He will always be loved by his daughter, Jean Jeffers; grandsons and wives, Gary and Cindy Jeffers of Caraway, and Randy and Lisa Jeffers of Lake City; great-grandson, Kyle Jeffers of Mountain View; and two nieces.

Short owned and operated Blansett’s Radiator and Garage in Trumann for 50-plus years. He trained many young men as mechanics who are still mechanics today. He served his Lord at Rowes Chapel Baptist Church in Caraway. He served as past master twice for the Trumann Masonic Lodge, in which he was a member for 46 years.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home at Trumann with the Revs. Rick Stevens and Bobby Brooks officiating.

Masonic rites will be conducted at the committal service in Caraway.

Pallbearers will be Walter Gatlin, Ronald Tyler, Gene Rogers, Mark Douglas, Jason Kelems and Jeff Martin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Cromwell, Bill Wagner, Jim Bullock and A.C. Finley.

Visitation will be this evening from 5-7 in Thompson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter, P.O. Box 1442, Fort Smith 72902.

Neva Bethel Castleberry

STRAWBERRY — Neva Castleberry, 81, died Monday at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Castleberry; two sons, Tommy and Timothy Castleberry; her parents; five brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include her daughters, Kay McEntire-Bowley of Chinnor, England, Sandy Whitehead of Jacksonville, Fla., and Debbie Moore of Lynn; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in House-Gregg Funeral Home at Lynn. Burial will follow in Lawrence Memorial Park at Walnut Ridge.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Billy Ray Collins

BONO — Billy Ray Collins, 72, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 1, 1936, in Bay to the late Flute and Josie Collins. He was retired after 27 years from Lincoln Manufacturing Co. as a forklift operator, receiving several awards and serving as a union steward for 15 years.

He was a former farmer, route salesman and salvage yard worker. He was a member of Strawfloor Baptist Church. Billy loved the outdoors. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Collins of the home; a son, Billy Joe Collins and his wife, Connie; a daughter, Beverly Longmire Swan and husband, Larry, all of Bono; two brothers, Larry Collins of Marion and Jerry Collins of Blytheville; two sisters, Ruth Vick and Peggy Hill, both of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren, Chris Timms, Shannon Timms, Terry Longmire, Michael Collins, Marsena Jones, Kim Kinkade and Ellena Cox; eight great-grandchildren, Logan McComas, Ethan Longmire, Savannah Longmire, Whitney Longmire, Paige Cox, Elizabeth Cox, Alysia Cox and Haven Timms; and the Swan extended family.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Collins, Ed Collins and J.R. Collins, and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Longmire and an infant.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Gregg Funeral Home Chapel of Jonesboro with the Revs. Don Miller and Rick Jaquess officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Lee Farnsworth, Robert Webster, Earl Webster, Chris Dhane, Eddie Greene, J.J. Johnson and Bryan Smith.

Visitation will be held this evening in Gregg Funeral Home at Jonesboro from 5:30-8.30.

James Denton

REYNO — James Denton, 65, passed away Tuesday at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Reyno.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Denton of Reyno; one brother, Don Denton of Biggers; and one sister, Betty Jean Crump, also of Reyno.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in McNabb Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ingram Cemetery with Roger Harris, Junior Vester and Anthony Dowdy officiating.

Visitation will be this evening from 5-8 in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home.
