Velba Sue Bankston

JONESBORO — Velba Sue Bankston, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at the Craighead Nursing Center.

She was born Sept. 3, 1934, at Judsonia to the late Oreon and Bessie Bales. She was a homemaker and very active member of the Viva Drive Church of Christ in Trumann. She loved her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Larry and Melissa Bankston of Cordova, Tenn., and Ricky and Lynnette Bankston of West Memphis; a daughter and her husband, Suzanne and David Benson of Jonesboro; a brother, Rhew Bales of Trumann; seven grandchildren, Joseph Bankston of Jonesboro, Kayla McDonald of Searcy, Jana Bankston of Cordova, Molly Bankston, Tucker Bankston and Turner Bankston, all of West Memphis, and Craig Benson of Jonesboro.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Jerl Bankston, and a sister, Carol Warren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Viva Drive Church of Christ in Trumann with Bill Willard officiating. Burial will follow in Marked Tree Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jerry McKinney, Raymond Asher, Joe Mitchell, Quinton Fletcher, Charles Gobbell and Woefud Conatser.

Visitation will be Friday from noon until time of service at Viva Drive Church of Christ.

The family requests lasting memorials be given to the American Cancer Society, Children’s Home Inc. of Paragould or Viva Drive Church of Christ.

Lawrence ‘Larry’ Frank Bauer

JONESBORO — Lawrence “Larry” Frank Bauer, 66, died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center after a long-term illness.

He was the son of the late Al “Cotton” Bauer and Rosalie Metzler Bauer. Larry was a lifelong resident of Jonesboro. He graduated from Jonesboro High School and Arkansas State University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

He received a commission in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and retired from the Army Reserves as a captain. While in active service, Larry was awarded The Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service and several other military awards and commendations.

Larry worked as vice president and general manager for Lynn Greene Enterprises for 33 years. He supervised all of the Big Star supermarkets and Quick Shops in Jonesboro, Paragould and Walnut Ridge. He served on the United Way board and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay Osment Bauer; his sister, Linda Bauer (Mrs. Joe) Jenkins of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; three nieces; and two nephews.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Emerson Memorial Chapel followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m. with Dr. Johnny Hutchinson officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. A private burial service will be held with the Rev. Robert Norvell officiating.

Those wishing to leave a lasting memorial, please consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Northeast Arkansas Humane Society or the Jonesboro Public Library.

Alfred Mizell Chancery

Feb. 26, 1952-Dec. 22, 2008

TUNICA, Miss. — Alfred Mizell “Mike” Chancery, 56, of Tunica, Miss., died Monday.

He was born at Flomaton, Ala., to the late Albert and Evie Lambeth Chancery.

Survivors include his children, Laura Marie Thibodeaux of Lafayette, La., and John D. Chancery; siblings, Pat Myrick of Gosnell, Rena Kelly of Jay, Fla., Geraldine Lowry of Flomaton, Billy Chancery of Bredton, Ala., Leonard Chancery of Osceola and William Chancery of Flomaton; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Travelers Rest Cemetery at Flomaton.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7 at Wilson’s Osceola Funeral Home.

Eunice Earlene Conrad

RAVENDEN — Eunice Conrad, 83, of Ravenden, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro.

She was born Dec. 20, 1925, at Ravenden Springs, the daughter of Earl and Bama Ann Wells Graham. Mrs. Conrad was a retired sales clerk working for Sears in her early years and later working for Spikes Clothing Store at Pocahontas.

Survivors include two sons, James Conrad of Chicago and Britt Conrad of Ravenden; four grandchildren, Cory Conrad of Bono, Kipp Conrad, Brittany Conrad and Lucas Conrad, all of Ravenden; and one great-granddaughter, Kirby Ann Conrad of Bono. Many other relatives and friends will mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Higginbotham Chapel at Walnut Ridge. Burial will follow in Wells Cemetery near Ravenden, under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service of Walnut Ridge.

Visitation will be from 5-8 Friday evening at the funeral home.

Glen McElyea Sr.

BLYTHEVILLE — Glen McElyea Sr., 61, of Blytheville died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

He is survived by a host of family and friends.

Services were Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Blytheville. Burial was in Gregory Cemetery at Kennett, Mo.

Donald Howard Moore Sr.

MANILA — Donald Howard Moore Sr., 75, of Manila went to be his heavenly father Tuesday at Great River Medical Center in Blytheville.

Born at Carvers Creek, N.C., he was the son of the late Aude and Mava Ledford Moore and had been a Manila resident since 2005.

He was a 1951 graduate of Elizabeth Town High School in Elizabeth Town, N.C., and a 1955 graduate of Carver-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., where he earned a bachelor of science degree in political science.

He was a retired human resources manager for several companies, including Burlington Industries. He was a member of the Manila First Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Gloria Weaver Moore of the home; one son, Donald Howard Moore Jr. of Fairfax., Va.; two daughters, Cindy White and her husband, Michael, of Manila, and Suzanne Veach and husband, Rob, of Jonesboro.

Moore is also survived by one brother, Edgar Moore of Sparta, N.C.; two sisters, Virginia Stines of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ava Lee Kirksey of Dallas, N.C.; four grandchildren, Chad Baker, Brett Baker, Melanie Conrad and Jenenne Moore; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle Baker, Kaden Baker and Madison Dawson.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Howard Funeral Home in Manila, with the Rev. Ferrel Duffel officiating.

Burial will follow in the Manila Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. Friday until service time.

Active pallbearers will be Don Moore, Brett Baker, Chad Baker, Darryl Conrad, Gerald Bebout and Alan Donner.

The family would like to recognize Dr. Jeffery Cohen and Dr. Tommy Wagner for their care of Mr. Moore.

The family requests lasting memorials be made to the Manila First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Frances Strop

BLYTHEVILLE — Frances Strop, 68, of Blytheville died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences Medical Center in Little Rock.

Survivors include a host of family and friends.

Services were Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Blytheville with burial following in Elmwood Cemetery.

Elbert ‘Ace’ White

HIGHLAND — Elbert “Ace” White, 76, of Highland died Monday at Ash Flat.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine White; daughters, July White of West Liberty, Iowa, Karma Joos of Columbia, Iowa, and Karin Cude of Russellville; sons, Randy White of Indianola, Iowa, and Tracy White of DeWitt, Iowa; sisters, Phyllis Ramsey of Keota, Iowa, and Judy White of Mitchellville, Iowa; brothers, Bob White of Hot Springs and Richard White of Winfield, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Brian Pummell will officiate.

Arrangements are by Heath Highland Funeral Home.

Morris Maughan Baxter

CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Morris Maughan Baxter, 86, of Cherokee Village, formerly of Prescott Valley, Ariz., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, Morris served in the U.S. Navy and then retired from the U.S. Air Force.

Morris enjoyed smoking his pipes and gardening. He was a “True Blue” L.A. Dodgers fan and had a special gift for nurturing animals. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10227, Air Force Sergeants Association and the Lions Club.

Morris is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Beatrice; daughters, Vonna Cassidy (Michael) of Ogden, Utah, Linda Harris (Richard) of Round Mountain, Calif., Susie Cover (Millard) of Jonesboro and Patricia Wisdom (Calvin) of Hardy; and a son, Thomas Parker (Terri) of Chehalis, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archibald and Millie Maughan Baxter; sisters, Mary Shaffer and Barbara Lundberg; and a twin brother, Louis; as well as a son, Robert Parker.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the local Humane Society or a charity of the giver’s choice.

Friends and family will celebrate Morris’s life at the Cover home, 366 County Road 729, in Jonesboro, Saturday at noon.

Clell Castleman

MANILA — Clell Castleman, 88, of Manila, died Monday at his home.

Born at Bay, he was the son of the late J.E. and Inez Behmy Castleman and had lived most of his life in Manila. He spent 20 years in Michigan and retired from General Motors. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Castleman served many years on the Manila Cemetery Association Board, was a member of the Manila Lions Club and the American Legion Herman Davis Post 197. He had been a member of Westside Baptist Church since 1975.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Della Williams Castleman; a stepson, James Carroll Hill; and three brothers.

He is survived by two brothers, Ell Castleman of Moore, Okla., and Gaylon Castleman of California.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Howard Funeral Service Chapel at Manila with the Rev. Troy Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Fields, Gene Dobbins, Charles Quinn, Lonnie Wright, Sonny Ashley and Bob Farmer.

The family will receive visitors Thursday from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
