Samuel T. Smith

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Samuel “Sam” T. Smith, 87, of Kansas City passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, 2009, at Kingswood Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Lenexa Baptist Church, 15320 West 87th St. Parkway, Lenexa, Kan. 66219. Burial will follow in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens, Shawnee, Kan.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to time of service in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lenexa Baptist Church Building Fund.

Sam was born in 1921 at Dardanelle. As a young man of 17, Sam demonstrated his love for his country by joining the Arkansas National Guard and then the U.S. Army, serving 14 years first in World War II and later the Korean War.

In 1945 Sam met the love of his life, Jessie Butler. They worked side by side building and nurturing their family and serving the Lord for 63 years.

Sam worked as an insurance adjuster in Jonesboro and then became the owner of Sam Smith’s Insurance Agency in West Memphis. He and Jessie retired to Lakeland, Fla., in 1985. They relocated to Kansas City in 2004 to be closer to family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Gladys Smith; and his daughter, Susan Smith.

He will be missed by his devoted wife, Jessie of the home; his son, Greg Smith of Orange Park, Fla.; his daughter, Alicia Dean of Lenexa, and their spouses; his grandchildren, Brandon and Jennifer Dean of Lenexa, and Jessica Smith of Columbus, Miss.; his great-grandchildren, Mason and Ethan Dean of Lenexa; his brother, Murl Smith of Jonesboro; and his nephews, Brad Smith of Jonesboro and Mark Smith of Fayetteville.

The family is at peace knowing Sam is now healthy and whole, rejoicing and praising his Lord and Savior.

Elinor Beatrice Stoner

NEWPORT — Mrs. Elinor Beatrice Stoner, 96, passed away at Newport on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009.

She was born Elinor Jones on April 23, 1912, to Samuel Francis and Iva Nora Jones. She married John Robert Stoner on May 25, 1929, and was preceded in death by him in 1980. She lived in Tuckerman until 2000, when she moved to Newport to be closer to her family.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Sue Turner; two sisters, Hazel Fishbeck and Orine Jones; and two brothers, Cleburne Jones and Abel Edward Jones.

She is survived by her son, Donald Stoner of Newport; her sister, Pauline Cook of McRae; grandchildren, Henry L. Turner III (Mary Jo) of Jonesboro, Marsha Turner Beck (Allen) of Bentonville, Michael N. Turner (Ann) of Newport, Lisa Walton (John) of Newport and Greg Stoner (Lisa) of Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Turner, Alexandria Turner, Brittney Turner, Justin Beck (Sara), Ashley Beck Hickman (John), Kim Beck Murphy (Jim), Lauren Turner Sampson (Jeff), Robert Turner, Nan Turner, Anthony Walton, Emily Walton, Brenna Hill (Wes), Michael West and Amanda Parker (Lory); and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She worked for many years as a clerk in Armstrong’s Store at Tuckerman until the store closed. Elinor was full of energy and love of life. Proudly independent and self-sufficient, she drove until her keys were lost, at the age of 90.

In her later years she showed a remarkable amount of determination and spirit while overcoming various illnesses and broken bones. She was known for always having one of the best gardens around and raised Pomeranian dogs.

Mrs. Stoner deeply loved and enjoyed her family and in return was deeply loved by them. Her family and most everyone who knew her affectionately referred to her as “Oma.” She will be forever missed.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Cheshier Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time.

Active pallbearers will be Justin Beck, Robert Turner, Anthony Walton, Jeff Sampson, John Hickman and John Murphy.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Turner and Michael West.

Arrangements are by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.

Milton Thomas

BEEDEVILLE — Milton Thomas, 87, of Beedeville died Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew “Shorty” and Alafa Roy Thomas; first wife, Lavora Womack Thomas; one infant son; one brother, Roy Thomas; and one sister, Maude Dabbs.

Survivors include his wife, Elwanda Williams Thomas; daughter, Brenda Thomas Casey and husband Sam; two grandchildren, Jon and Jeff Casey; and four great-grandchildren; Wyatt, Dalton, Brenden and Grant Casey.

Pallbearers will be Jon Casey, Jeff Casey, Steven Dabbs, Nathan Dabbs, Shawn Williams and Terry Fields.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Beede­ville Church of Christ with interment in Eight Mile Cemetery.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 in Jackson’s Funeral Home.

Ramie E. Ainsworth

OSCEOLA — Ramie E. Ainsworth, 85, of Osceola entered into rest Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Jonesboro.

Born Wednesday, Jan. 23, 1924, at Cincinnati to the late Limon Cox and Mary Ellen Gassar Cox, she was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Osceola and a nurses’ aide.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Smithey and husband Jack of Keiser, and Beatrice Shirley and husband Roy of Cincinnati; three sons, Clarence Joseph Ainsworth Jr. and wife Shirley of Mountain View, James Lee Ainsworth and Bruce Ainsworth, both of Keiser; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Ainsworth Sr.; and son-in-law, Albert Arquitt.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Roller-Swift Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-8 this evening in the funeral home.

Roy Arant

JONESBORO — Roy Arant, 82, of Jonesboro, formerly of Paragould, died Thursday, Feb. 5, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital at Jonesboro.

Roy was retired from Foremost Dairy.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Arant; son, Brent Arant; brother, George Arant; sisters, Eva Smith and Ruby Hoggard; and parents, Johnie B. and Ethel Blount Arant.

Survivors include his brother, Johnie Arant of Biggers; half brother, Maurice King of Philadelphia; half sister, Irene Thornburg of Torrance, Calif.; sister, Dolly Rice of Paragould; and best friend, Marge Bradshaw of Jonesboro.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Heath Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Johnie Arant officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Carl Byrd

MANILA — Carl Madison Byrd, 83, of Manila died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at his home.

Born at Leachville, he was the son of the late E.E. and Lula Coffell Byrd and had been a Leachville-Manila area resident for most of his life. He was a retired lab technician and administrator for the former Rodman Hospital at Leachville.

Mr. Byrd was a former Manila scoutmaster and also retired from the Manila Volunteer Fire Department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a hospital corpsman attached to the 2nd Marine Division during the invasions of Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was a longtime member of the Manila First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Byrd, in 2007.

Survivors include two sons, John Byrd of Manila and Victor “Vic” Byrd of Fayetteville, Ga.; and two brothers, Edgar Byrd of Long Beach, Calif., and Frank Byrd of Manila. He also leaves three grandchildren, Nick Byrd, Bria Byrd and Sarah Byrd.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church at Manila with the Revs. Ferrel Duffel and William Piercy officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Manila Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 this evening in Howard Funeral Chapel at Manila.

Sue Davidson

JONESBORO — Dr. Sue Davidson, 89, of Jonesboro passed away while visiting her daughter in Plymouth, Minn., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009.

Sue Davidson was born at Conway. She earned her bachelor’s degree from University of Central Arkansas, her master’s and specialist’s degrees from Arkansas State University and her doctorate from the University of Memphis.

Sue had taught for 50 years with 15 of those years at Arkansas State University. She retired as a professor in the College of Education. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro.

She is survived by her son, Scott Davidson of Jonesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Chris Hood of Plymouth and Cindy and Marty Fagan of Vernon, Conn.; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Davidson, Grant Davidson, Michael Hood, Ben Hood, Allison Hood, Chris Fagan and Kevin Fagan; and a great-granddaughter, Kayliana.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” O. Davidson, in 1994.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, in the First United Methodist Church Chapel with the Rev. John Miles officiating. Burial will be private. Langford-Bookout Funeral Home of Jonesboro is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Opal Dickey

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Services for Opal Dickey, 91, will be held at 1 p.m. today in Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer, Tenn. Interment will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, Stantonville, Tenn.

Mrs. Dickey departed this life on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Savannah.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ann McLain of Selmer and Ginger Lee of Bay; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Omer and Cleo Hopkins; husband, Broise Dickey; and siblings, Geneva Harris, Mabel Hathcock, Mollie Smith, Eura Mae Robbins, Oscar Hopkins and Lewis Hopkins.
