Maurice Lowell Holt

PARAGOULD — Maurice Lowell Holt, 89, of Paragould died Friday, April 23, 2010, at Jonesboro.

Born Dec. 21, 1920, he was retired from Darling Store Fixtures and a member of the Paragould First Assembly of God.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shannon Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. Monday until service time.

Verna Hubbard

TUCKERMAN — Verna Hubbard, 67, of Tuckerman died Thursday, April 22.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Bobby G. Hubbard; son, Bobby Don Hubbard and wife Michelle of Jonesboro; sister, Tony Bowman; grandchildren, Bobby W. Hubbard, Travis Hubbard, Sarah Orosz, Desiree Orosz and Crystal Fay; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Riley and Roric; nephew, Tim Dunman; niece, Kaitlyn Hale; best friends, Congregation of the Tuckerman Church of Christ, Cynthia Brock, Pat Childress, Doris Bateman, Dorothy Tirey and Ollie Simmons; and her wonderful doctors, Caroll Scroggin and Wade Falwell.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Gracelawn Cemetery with arrangements by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.

Velvie Hill Lovelace

JONESBORO — Velvie Hill Lovelace, 92, of Jonesboro died Friday, April 23, 2010, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born June 30, 1917, at Pocahontas, she was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Finch Cemetery with Gary Morris officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mitchell Funeral Home.

Marion Mayfield

LESTER — Marion Woodrow Mayfield, 93, of the Lester community died Friday, April 23, 2010.

He was born at Lester and lived there his entire life. He was a resident of Lakeside Nursing Center for two months before he died. He worked on the farm, did factory work and was also a grocery store clerk. He was a commercial fisherman for many years.

He retired as bridge foreman from the Craighead County Road Department at Black Oak. He was of the Baptist belief. Mr. Mayfield loved fishing, gardening and playing the harmonica.

He married Velmer Sims on April 4, 1936. They were married 68 years at the time of her death on July 2, 2004. Also preceding him in death was his father, Dr. Eli Mayfield, a practicing physician in Craighead County for many years; his mother, Sally Rhama Mayfield; six half brothers, Tatum and Floyd Rhama, Bland, Grover, Lonzo and Dr. Maude Mayfield; and five half sisters, Wilma Bley, Mary Claire, Sarah Denton, Jewel McGaughey and Linda Taft.

Survivors include one daughter, Millie Henson, and her husband Vernon of Jonesboro; one grandson, Brian K. Ford and wife Gwyn of Jonesboro; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today in Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with G.W. Endicott officiating. Burial will follow in Nettleton Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will include Keith Hayes, Heath McGaughey, Kelley McGaughey, Kyle McGaughey, Dennis Hendley and Bob Huffman.

Lasting memorials can be made to the Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Lester.

Betty Ellen Smith

HARDY — Betty Ellen Smith of Hardy died Thursday morning, April 22, at White River Medical Center in Batesville following an extended illness; she was 67 years old.

She was born April 18, 1943, at Beulah, Mich., to the late Harrison and Helen Beelar Waterson. She was joined in marriage to Cecil L. Smith on March 12, 1972, at Hardy First Baptist Church.

She worked for many years with the Times Dispatch in Walnut Ridge. She was a member of Highland Assembly of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Lawrence Waterson, and one sister-in-law, Louise Waterson.

She is survived by her husband, Cecil; two sons, Chris Smith and Michael and Michelle Smith; two grandchildren, Hunter and McKayla Smith, all of Hardy; two brothers, Herb Waterson of Rockford, Ill., and Allan Waterson of Lansing, Mich.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.

The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Assembly of God.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church. Pastor Chris Clem will officiate and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery at Mammoth Springs.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service, 302 Main St., Hardy.

Ruth Smithee

HARDY — Ruth Smithee, 100, of Hardy died Friday, April 23, 2010, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital at Jonesboro.

She was born at Flippin and had lived in Hardy for 14 years, moving there from Jonesboro. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Smithee; parents, Joe and Edith Tolbert Ward; daughter, Iva Smithee; son, Gary Smithee; two brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by her three sons, J.W. Smithee of Sterling, Ill., Joe Smithee of Jonesboro and Glen Smithee of Hardy; four daughters, Joyce Vaughn and Mildred Miller, both of Jonesboro, Barbara Muller of Hardy and Wilma Fortson of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Nettleton Cemetery with Jim Corter officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

Lewis M. Best

ROCHELLE, Ill. — Lewis “Buck” M. Best, 79, of Rochelle, Ill., was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at his home.

Buck passed away comfortably after a lengthy battle with cancer with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 11, 1931, at Cash to Raymond Augustus and Alice Mae Dunn Best. Buck proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War.

Buck married Patricia Darleen Sitzes on March 21, 1970, in Rock Falls, Ill. He owned and operated Best Welding and Manufacturing Co. in Rochelle.

Memberships include the Cross Roads Community Church, Rockford Tebala Shrine, and he was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Horicon Masonic Lodge No. 244, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3878 and Rochelle Moose Club.

Buck’s strong values led him to help many people throughout his life. He strongly believed in giving back to the community and made many contributions to local organizations. Kishwaukee Community College honored him for his contributions to higher education and advisory services, and in 1986-87 he was designated Industry Executive of the Year by the Rochelle Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Darleen of Rochelle; son, Charles W. Barnett of Grand Detour, Ill.; daughters, Julie A. (Terrence) Mendyk of Spring Grove, Ill., Melinda D. (Steven) Chagin of Hinckley, Ohio, Nancy K. (Joel) Russell of Rochelle and Valesia M. (Jason Bunger) Best of Cortland, Ill.; sister, Juanita “Sally” Wortham of Jonesboro; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Bradford and Harvey Bradford; and a daughter, Karen R. Barnett.

Visitation will be at Unger-Horner Funeral Home from 6-8 Thursday evening in Rochelle. Family funeral services will be held Friday. Burial will be in Lawnridge Cemetery at Rochelle with military services by VFW Post 3878.

Rita Brunner

NEWPORT — Rita Lukes Brunner, 80, of Newport departed this life Saturday, April 10, 2010.

Preceding in her death were her husband, Herbert Brunner; parents, Lewis and Calla Lukes; and brother, Roger Lukes.

Survivors include her son, Lewis Brunner and wife Shawn of Tuckerman; grandchildren, Lewis Brunner Jr. of California, Christopher Brunner of Campbell Station, Sarah Brunner, Dylan Brunner and Megan Brunner, all of Tuckerman; and great-grandchildren, Ryder Brunner of Campbell Station and Avery Brunner of California.

Funeral services will at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8.

Marion ‘Butch’ Dorton

JONESBORO — Marion “Butch” Dorton, 63, of Jonesboro died early Monday morning from injuries sustained in a 1-vehicle accident on C.W. Post Road in Jonesboro.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, of the home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Emilia Fregona

BLYTHEVILLE — Emilia Fabbro Fregona, 83, of Blythe-ville died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Great River Medical Center.

Born in Aviano, Italy, to the late Luigi Fabbro Fregona and Rosina Geraduzzi Fregona, she was a retired nanny and housekeeper in Italy.

Ms. Fabbro Fregona leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Rosanna and John Bernier of Blythe-ville; and two grandchildren, John A. Bernier of Charleston, S.C., and Christine Bernier of Cincinnati.

Funeral services will be private under the direction of Cobb Funeral Home of Blytheville.
