Betty Ellen Smith
HARDY — Betty Ellen Smith of Hardy died Thursday morning, April 22, at White River Medical Center in Batesville following an extended illness; she was 67 years old.
She was born April 18, 1943, at Beulah, Mich., to the late Harrison and Helen Beelar Waterson. She was joined in marriage to Cecil L. Smith on March 12, 1972, at Hardy First Baptist Church.
She worked for many years with the Times Dispatch in Walnut Ridge. She was a member of Highland Assembly of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Lawrence Waterson, and one sister-in-law, Louise Waterson.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil; two sons, Chris Smith and Michael and Michelle Smith; two grandchildren, Hunter and McKayla Smith, all of Hardy; two brothers, Herb Waterson of Rockford, Ill., and Allan Waterson of Lansing, Mich.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.
The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Assembly of God.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church. Pastor Chris Clem will officiate and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery
at Mammoth Springs.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service, 302 Main St., Hardy.
Ruth Smithee
HARDY — Ruth Smithee, 100, of Hardy died Friday, April 23, 2010, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital at Jonesboro.
She was born at Flippin and had lived in Hardy for 14 years, moving there from Jonesboro. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Smithee; parents, Joe and Edith Tolbert Ward; daughter, Iva Smithee; son, Gary Smithee; two brothers; and two sisters.
She is survived by her three sons, J.W. Smithee of Sterling, Ill., Joe Smithee of Jonesboro and Glen Smithee of Hardy; four daughters, Joyce Vaughn and Mildred Miller, both of Jonesboro, Barbara Muller of Hardy and Wilma Fortson of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Nettleton Cemetery
with Jim Corter officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation.
David Allison
JONESBORO — David Ray Allison, 45, of Jonesboro died Wednesday, May 5.
He is survived by his son, Benjamin Allison of Jonesboro; daughter, Jami Rhea Allison of Jonesboro; mother, Mary Allison; sisters, Ina Allison, Becky Allison- Johnson and Kathy West; three grandchildren; four nieces; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard, and brother, Richard.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Pierce Cemetery
with Paul White officiating. Visitation will be from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday in Emerson Funeral Home.

Theobeth Beckett
NEWPORT — Theobeth Beckett, 66, of Newport died Tuesday, May 4.
Survivors include her husband, George L. Beckett; sons, James Beckett and wife Donna of Katy, Texas, and George R. Beckett and wife Laura of North Little Rock; brothers, Lewis Jones of Newport and Dorsey Jones of Devers, Texas; a cousin, who was raised as a brother, W.F. “Dub” Sullivan; and grandchildren, Brandy, Aaron, Nickey, Tayler, Joy, Jordyn, Bailey and Benson.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Maple Springs Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-9 tonight in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.
Earlene Gladys Belfeld
MORONGO VALLEY, Calif. — Earlene Gladys Belfeld, 86, of Morongo Valley, Calif., passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at her residence.
She was born in Lake City into the family of Sam and Avery Mae Moore Doty. She was a manager of a trailer park in Morongo Valley for many years. Mrs. Belfeld was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal belief.
She is survived by four sons, Stanley Riggs of Anderson, Mo., Jimmy Riggs of Goodman, Mo., Glen Riggs of Joplin, Mo., and Billy Joe Warner; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Elton Doty of Brookland; and one sister, Jetty Banty of Jonesboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Warner; a sister, Esta Lee Broughton; and one brother, Raymond Doty.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery
with Harold Russell officiating under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home.
Judy Crain Benten
MEMPHIS — Judy Crain Benten died at her home in Memphis on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.
She was born on Sept. 3, 1948, in Memphis to John Enochs and Mary Edith Siler Crain. She graduated from Wilson High School in Wilson. She graduated from Little Rock University, now the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She married John Barry Benten on June 23, 1973, at Wilson.
While at LRU, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After graduating, she taught second grade at Hazen Elementary School. She lived in Little Rock until her marriage, then moved to Memphis, where she was a member of Les Passees and a volunteer at the Women’s Exchange.
She loved people and enjoyed travel, especially cruises. She loved her dogs and leaves behind her precious companion, Pollyanna.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, John Barry Benten; her sisters, Mary Ann Rose-Williams of Blytheville, Nancy Crain Balton of Wilson and Susan Crain Railsback of Pine Bluff; and her brother, John Enochs Crain Jr. of Jonesboro. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Bassett Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Memphis or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jimmy Bowman
JONESBORO — Jimmy Bowman, 67, of Jonesboro died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at his home of natural causes.
Born in Lake City, Jimmy lived much of his life in the Jonesboro-Lake City area. He was a retired animal control officer for the City of Jonesboro, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a Baptist. Jimmy enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Bowman, and by his parents, James and Faye Kirby Bowman.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn Bowman of the home; three sons, Eddie Bowman (Tiffanie Curtis) of Bay, Tim Kincade (Dani) and Thomas Kincade (Anna), all of Jonesboro; three daughters, Rebecca Moore (David) of Olive Branch, Miss., Aimee DeRossitte (Jay) of Bono and Kim Ward (Malon) of Madill, Okla.; one brother, Bobby Bowman (Kay) of Warner Robins, Ga.; two sisters, Patricia Gulley (Stan) of Bay and Dorothy Higginbotham (Lynn) of Ace, Texas; and five grandchildren, Bryce Bowman, Sabrina Bowman, Emily Moore, Hannah Moore and Zac Curtis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Harold Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers include Chad Colbert, Jon Hampton, Paul Jennings, Jim Griffin Sr., Jamie Ramey and Gregg Jennings.
Honorary pallbearers include John George, Hubert Brodell, Charlie Noel, Brandon Bowen and Larry Johnson.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Jones Hospice House for the exceptional care and compassion given to Jimmy.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today in Emerson Funeral Home.

Jeffery Bryant
JONESBORO — Jeffery Charles Bryant, 29, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, May 4, 2010.
He was born in Jonesboro and lived his lifetime in Jonesboro. He was of the Baptist belief and was a surveyor. He loved to play football and was a 1999 graduate of Westside High School.
He loved to play his guitar and go hunting, but most of all, his nephew was the love of his life. He is now together with his brother, Jared, and will surely be missed.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jared Bryant; paternal grandfather, William H. Bryant; maternal grandfather, Robert McKinley; paternal great-grandmother, Emma Ishmael; and his uncle, Dale Bryant.
Survivors include his parents, Curtis and Lori Bryant of the home; parents by love, Rosanne and Bobby Taylor; maternal grandmother, Anna Sue Rolland of Bono; paternal grandmother, Juanita Bryant of Jonesboro; one nephew, Blaine Bryant of Jonesboro; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Pine Log Cemetery
with Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge.
Visitation will be from noon until service time in Emerson Funeral Home. Family and friends are welcome to bring their pictures of Jeffery for the portrait board to help celebrate his life.
William Edward Carle
MONETTE — William Edward Carle, 51, of Monette died Tuesday, May 4, near Monette.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he was the son of the late Harry Edward and Dana Elizabeth Fitzgerald Carle and had lived in the Monette area most of his life.
He was a 1977 graduate of the Monette High School and was a retired salesman for Coca-Cola Beverage Co. in Jonesboro. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Allen Carle.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Adams Carle of the home; his son, Dustin Carle of Monette; two daughters, Krystal Carmichael and her husband Buddy of Leachville and Kasey Carle of Paragould; one brother, Keith Carle of Valley View; five sisters, Carol McFarlin and husband James of Monette, Elizabeth “Liz” Watson of Paragould, Bonnie Watkins of Tuckerman, Rockie Watkins and Laura Watkins Mansfield, both of Paragould; an aunt, Carolyn Young of Stuttgart; and special friends, Dwight and Charlene Mangrum of Lake City.
He also leaves four grandchildren, Trace and Kinley Carmichael, and Dylan and Hanah Carle.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Howard Funeral Chapel at Leachville with the Revs. Roger Brand and Rusty Byrd officiating.
