Dwain Jarrett

WALNUT RIDGE — Dwain Jarrett, 84, of Walnut Ridge passed away Monday.

He was a farmer, former owner of Turbo Brush of Hoxie, veteran of World War II and member of First Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Willene Jarrett of Walnut Ridge; stepsons, Scott and Patty Hackworth of Cameron, N.C., and Bill and Paula Hackworth of Portia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Clover Bend Cemetery directed by Bryan Funeral Home of Hoxie.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-8 at the funeral home.

Edna McElroy

WYNNE — Edna McElroy, 89, of Wynne passed away Sunday in Wynne.

Survivors are her daughters, Yvonne Lace of Cherry Valley, Kathryn Summers of Lakeland, Tenn., and Patricia Griffin of Marion; brother, James Hammonds of New Braunsfield, Texas; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kernodle Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Vanndale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Kernodle Funeral Home.

John Paul Newcomb Jr.

WALNUT RIDGE — John Paul Newcomb Jr., 60, passed from this life Sunday.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Newcomb Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Newcomb of Walnut Ridge; daughters, Alice Warkentin of Atwater, Calif., and Becky Statsmann of Los Angelas; mother, Lois Schaefer of Walnut Ridge; brother, Jim Newcomb of Evansville, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Memorial Park with Derek Collins officiating under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. today at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Lane Wyatt Nichols

BROOKLAND — Lane Wyatt Nichols, infant son of Robert and Melissa Troup Nichols of Brookland, was born into Heaven Saturday, July 10, 2010.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Melissa Troup Nichols; grandparents, Donnie and Karen Wiggins, Bill and Judy Nichols, Kim and Elizabeth Kingcade, Vernon and Shirley Troup; and great-grandparents, Joyce Troup Canada, Oleta Kingcade; Betty Grabnick; and many other family members.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Charles and Nancy Hill, Billy and Susie “Papa and Mamaw” Nichols, and Claude Kingcade; and his aunt, Lea Whaley.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today in Center Point Cemetery at Hazen with Allen Minton officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Smith

MCCRORY — Mary Smith, 81, of McCrory passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at Wynne.

She was born Dec. 21, 1928, at Morton to John and Mary Cain Smith. She married King Smith.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, three brothers, one granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Glenn, Shirley Moore and Patti Weber; three sisters; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be today at 10 a.m. in Woodman Cemetery at McCrory directed by Thompson-Wilson Wynne Funeral Home. No visitation is planned.

Frances Waldrep

WYNNE — Frances Waldrep, 77, of Wynne died Sunday at River Ridge Rehabilitation and Care Center in Wynne.

Survivors are her daughter, Beth Spelbring of Jerseyville, Ill., and grandchildren, Clinton and Caitlin Hall.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Kernodle Funeral Home with services following at 10 and burial in Harris Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Ridgeview Baptist Church.

Frances B. Weaver

HARRISBURG — Frances Weaver, 88, of Harrisburg passed away July 10, 2010, at her home.

Survivors are her sons, Wilburn Weaver, Louis Weaver and Billy Weaver, all of Harrisburg, and Lee Weaver of Trumann; daughters, Mary Eaton of Maumelle, Mary Slater of Harrisburg and Clara McDaniel of Bay Village; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. to noon at Kernodle Funeral Home with a graveside service following at 12:30 in Tyer Cemetery at Cherry Valley.

Martha Derise Beaton

WYNNE — Martha Derise Beaton, 85, of Wynne died Friday, July 23, 2010, at her home in Wynne.

Mrs. Beaton was preceded in death by her parents, Laodice and Leonore Derise, and brother, Louis Paul Derise.

Mrs. Beaton was born in Jeanerette, La., on Jan. 7, 1925. She moved to Wynne and married Kenneth Beaton in 1950. She was an avid golfer, gardener and bridge player.

After graduating from Franklin High School in Louisiana, Mrs. Beaton continued her education and received her RN degree from Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She became a skilled surgical nurse and was employed at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, where she met her future husband.

Martha was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the Crowley’s Ridge Ladies Golf Association, where she served as treasurer for 20 years. She was a former member of the Town and Country Garden Club. She enjoyed bimonthly bridge club for 40 years with many dear friends. She volunteered at Red Cross blood drives for many years.

Survivors included husband, Dr. Kenneth Beaton of Wynne; children, Dr. Neal Beaton (Dr. Janet Udouj) and Dr. Susan Manley (Michael) of Little Rock, Becky Rhodes (Richard) of El Dorado, Cindy Hathcock (Steve) and Dr. Trent Beaton (Tammy) of Wynne; 12 grandchildren, Justin Rhodes (Adrienne), Kristin Rhodes, Adam Rhodes, Laura Beaton (Nate Mitchell), Katie Beaton, John Beaton, Robert Beaton, George Beaton, Jessie Clare Wilson (John Paul), Ken Hathcock, Drew Manley and Blair Manley; great-grandchildren, Elliot Rhodes, Emerson Rhodes and John Steven Wilson. Also, she leaves her two sisters, Eloise Derise Wittenberg of Lafayette, La., and Rita Derise Dearing (Howard) of Covington, La.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wynne with burial in Cogbill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today with rosary beginning after visitation.

The family would like to thank the staff of Little Rock Hematology and Oncology for the devoted care, especially Dr. Brad Baltz and nurse Ginger Krock, as well as the staff of CrossRidge Community Hospital, particularly Ms. Emma Lewis.

Memorials may be sent to St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Wynne, Cross County Public Library or your favorite local charity.

Sarah Burke

JONESBORO — Sarah Evelyn Stevenson Burke, 90, of Jonesboro passed from this life on Friday, July 23, 2010, at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.

She was a homemaker and an avid reader. She was a very active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where she was famous for her deviled eggs and her secret ingredient angel food cake.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1919, in Marianna, where she was raised. Sarah married Robert Burke in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Marianna in 1943.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Burke; her parents, John Eberle and Evelyn Arrington Stevenson; and a daughter, Frances Burke Thomas.

Survivors include a son, Robert William Burke Jr. of Paris, France; a daughter and her husband, Eberle and W.E. “Bubba” Grimmer III of Jonesboro; one grandchild, Arrington Lyle Grimmer; and a sister, Frances Susan Bartenstein of Warrenton, Va.

Church services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Graveside committal services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Cedar Heights at Marianna with Jesse Perkins officiating the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

No visitation is planned.

Honorary pallbearers will include Barbara Feeser, Barbara Keller, Carol Hinck, Kitty Thompson, Frannie Replogle, Susie Grommet, Anna Finley and Meg Nelson.

The family requests lasting memorials be sent to either St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 531 West College Ave., Jonesboro 72401; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis 38105.

Marie Butler

MARMADUKE — Marie Butler, 92, of Marmaduke passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010.

She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Bono, the only child of Ellis and Ethel Adams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, K.C. Butler; her father and mother, Ellis and Ethel Adams; and her in-laws, Ward and Versa Butler.

Marie leaves no immediate family, but many great friends, among them a great group of former students.

Marie was a 1935 graduate of Arkansas State College in Jonesboro, and taught first grade in Jonesboro for two years. She married K.C. Butler in 1940, moved to Marmaduke and taught first grade for 38 years.

Marie was an active member of the Marmaduke First United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist, Sunday school secretary and Sunday school teacher. She also served many years as secretary-treasurer of Harvey’s Chapel Cemetery Association. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel at Rector with the Rev. Wayne Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Harvey’s Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home.
