Emma Hearn

JONESBORO — Emma Hearn, 96, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Batesville.

She was born Oct. 4, 1914, at Tuscumbia, Ala., to the late Henry and Lillian Cooke. She was a member and the secretary of First Methodist Church of Jonesboro for several years.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Hearn of Batesville; a son, Jon Hearn of Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thompson McCoy Hearn; a son, Don Hearn; three sisters; and a brother.

The family requested no formal memorial service; a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, they ask that memorials be sent to Woodlawn Nursing Center, 2901 Neeley St., Batesville 72501.

James Hodges

CAVE CITY — James Randal “Randy” Hodges, 57, of Cave City died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.

He was born Dec. 13, 1953, at Memphis to James A. and Mary Tant Hodges.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Weaver Hodges of the home; sons, Jimmy and Jon Hodges, both of Cave City; and siblings, Ron Hodges of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Rhonda Austin of Bolivar, Tenn.

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at Maxville Missionary Baptist Church of Cave City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery at Sidney by Qualls Funeral Home.

Sherry Hall Jenson

WYNNE — Mrs. Sherry Hall Jenson, 66, of Wynne passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.

Survivors are her daughter, Dena Hall McClain of Wynne; sister, Jackie Meggs of Martinez, Ga.; and grandchildren, Jordan, Allyson and Lauren, all of Wynne.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 at Kernodle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial in Forrest Park Cemetery at Forrest City.

Memorials may be sent to Wynne Baptist Church.

Marie Evans Kirk

POCAHONTAS — Marie Evans Kirk of Pocahontas was called to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.

Marie was born on Feb. 17, 1927, near Biggers to her parents, Gussie and Gene Evans.

She was married to W. Louie Kirk for 59 years before he passed away in 2003, and she was a loving and devoted mother to her daughter, DeAlonna.

She leaves behind her daughter; son-in-law, Roger; sisters, Floretta, Winnie, Patricia, Andrea and Virginia; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, J.R.; and sister, Jane.

At Mrs. Kirk’s request there will be a private burial service and no visitation.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home.

Shirley Leitzen

MANILA — Shirley Jean Leitzen, 76, of Manila died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at her home.

Born in Freeport, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Thelma Dyson Veer and had been a Manila-area resident for the past 48 years.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, William Leitzen of Manila; four sons, William Leitzen Jr. and Walter Leitzen, both of Manila, Thomas Leitzen of Leachville and Douglas Leitzen of Manila; four daughters, Mary Carter of Manila, Rita Armstrong of Lepanto, Margie Thrasher of Leachville and Cathy Carter of Manila; one brother, Robert Veer of Reno; and two sisters, Patricia Huenefeld of Lena, Ill., and Ruby Rouleau of Manchester, N.H. She also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Howard Funeral Service chapel at Manila. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. Saturday until service time at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann Martin

JONESBORO — Shirley Martin, 58, of Jonesboro died Friday, Jan. 14, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born at Marked Tree, Jonesboro was Shirley’s home for the past 17 years. She was a member of Anderson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Letha Martin Sykes of Jonesboro; sisters, Mystic Friar of Columbus, Miss., and Betty Madden of Marked Tree; brother, Hester Smith of Memphis; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Anderson Chapel at Marked Tree with the Rev. Willie Sanders officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery at Marked Tree under direction of Woodard Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Woodard’s Jonesboro Funeral home.

Stanley Nawrocki Sr.

CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Stanley Nawrocki Sr., 83, of Cherokee Village died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at his residence.

Stanley retired from MIT as a professor in electronics. He also served as a consultant for Sony, General Electric and many other companies. He served in the Navy as a radio operator.

He is survived by his two sons, Jerry Nawrocki of Cherokee Village and Stanley Nawrocki Jr. of Menomonee Falls, Minn.; sister, Ann Smalley of Boulder City, Nev.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three nephews, Walter Nawrocki, John and Ed Majewski.

The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. today at Heath Oak Hill Chapel in Highland.

Rosary service will be at St. Michaels Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Friday, and funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tom Marks will officiate.

Gurden Phillips

DENTON — Gurden Dean Phillips, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at his home in the Denton community.

Born May 15, 1919, he was the son of George and Mary Walker Phillips.

He was a retired tool and die maker and cattle farmer. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents;

four brothers, Pierce Phillips, Russel Phillips, Noel Phillips and Chesser Phillips; and three sisters, Lala Wilson, Linnie Jones and Lois Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Culver Phillips, whom he married Oct. 30, 1943; sons, Gary Phillips and wife Karen of Denton, and Danny Phillips and wife Lesia of Black Rock; grandchildren, Jennifer Haskins, Ryan Phillips, Austin Phillips, Clay Phillips and spouses; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with Harold Russell and Randy Willams officiating. Interment will follow in Holobaugh Cemetery with pallbearers Ryan, Austin and Clay Phillips, Elden Henderson, and Charles and Clay Blankenship. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of New Hope Baptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service Inc., 401 West Main St., Walnut Ridge.

Wavie L. Phillips Sr.

PIGGOTT — Wavie Lee Phillips Sr., 72, of Piggott passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Phillips of Piggott; daughters, Kim Phillips of Indiana and Felicia Phillips of Kentucky; sons, Wavie Lee Phillips Jr. of Piggott, Dennis Phillips and Lenny Phillips, both of Pollard; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home chapel at Piggott with Jay Masterson officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery at Pollard.

Visitation begins tonight at 6.

Beatrice Sumpter-Watlington

WEST MEMPHIS — Beatrice Augustine Sumpter-Watlington, 72, of West Memphis passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at West Memphis.

Survivors are her husband, Herman Watlington of the home; son, Darrel Jerome Watlington of Marion; daughter, Vivian Lorraine Watlington-Biggs and husband William of Bartlett, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Jennie Watlington; brothers, J.L. Riley of Colt and Max Edward Riley of Arizona; sister, Linnievee Joyce Douglas of Harrison; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Kernodle Funeral Home with burial in Smith Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
