BLYTHEVILLE - James `Willie' Applegate, 61, Postal Service maintenance employee in Memphis, died of heart failure Friday at Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Cobb Funeral Home with burial in Dogwood Cemetery. He was a former member of the American Legion, a Vietnam War Navy veteran and a Navy Reserve veteran. Mr. Applegate, the husband of Bonnie Williams Applegate, also leaves a daughter, Tracie Applegate of Grove, Okla.; a son, Joey Applegate of West Memphis; his mother, Ruth Applegate of Fisk, Mo.; a sister, Brenda Tart of Blytheville; and two brothers, Cecil H. Applegate of Blytheville and Fred Applegate of Fisk.

JONESBORO - James Riley Darnell, 89, formerly of Braggadocio, Mo., retired employee of McDonnell Douglas, died of heart failure Wednesday at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at H. S. Smith Funeral Home in Caruthersville, Mo., with burial in Pemiscot Memorial Gardens there. He was a member of Wood Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Darnell, the husband of Ethel Darnell, also leaves three daughters, Jerrie Vincent of Jonesboro, Sheri Mauney of Rancho, Calif., and Shirley Gordon of Las Vegas; a son, Shank Darnell of Jonesboro; a sister, Dorothy Bennett, and a brother, Raymond Darnell, both of Hayti, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to Wood Springs Baptist Church.

PALESTINE - Lowell Sitzes, 80, retired sawmill worker, died of heart failure Friday at Methodist Healthcare-North in Memphis. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Twin Assembly of God with burial in Salem Cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home in Forrest City has charge. He was a member of Raleigh Assembly of God. He leaves three sisters, Lela Barthalow of Bartlett, Tenn., Marilyn Maddox of Collierville, Tenn., and Evalynn Godwinn of Forrest City, and two brothers, Clivy Sitzes of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and McRae Sitzes of Memphis.

WEST HELENA - Herbert `Corky' Storey Jr., 81, retired Postal Service letter carrier, died of heart failure Friday at Helena Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were Saturday in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Roller-Citizens Funeral Home had charge. He was a member of West Helena Baptist Church and an Air Force veteran. He leaves two daughters, Melinda Allen of Lexa and Sissy Freeman of Memphis; a son, Shorty Storey of Marianna; three sisters, Peggy Simpson of Fenton, Mo., Geraldine Duke of Jonesboro and Helen Bickett of Phoenix, Ariz., six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

BLYTHEVILLE - Glenda M. Lay, 88, of Elizabethtown, Ky., formerly of Blytheville, insurance clerk for Internal Medicine Association in Blytheville, died of heart failure Sunday at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cobb Funeral Home with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. She was a member of Grace Heartland Church in Elizabethtown and a former member of Fairview Baptist Church. Mrs. Lay, the widow of William Carl Lay, leaves a daughter, Carlene Cook of Montgomery, Texas; a son, Carl Lay of Elizabethtown; a sister, Jessie Shelby of Mountain Home; a brother, Charles R. Morris of Germantown, Tenn., seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BRINKLEY - Mildred Kent Brewer, 93, homemaker, died of heart failure Monday at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Brinkley, where she was a member, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bob Neal & Sons Funeral Home has charge. Mrs. Brewer, the widow of Alvan Brewer, leaves a daughter, Brenda Kaye Neal, and a son, Loyd Brewer, both of Brinkley; a sister, Ruth Oldham of Ocala, Fla., five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Brinkley.

LUXORA - Dorothy Jean Lattimore, 63, nurse's aide, died April 18 at her home after a stroke. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Whiteside Cemetery in Osceola. Wilson Funeral Home in Osceola has charge. She leaves four daughters, Nevada Britton of Memphis, and Evelyn Clark, Betty Lattimore and Mary Lattimore, all of Luxora; three sons, Harvey Lewis of Winston-Salem, N.C., O. W. Lewis of Springfield, Mo., and Charles Lattimore of Burdette; a stepdaughter, Deloris Falls of Blytheville; two sisters, Olivia Hodges and Jessie Walk, both of Los Angeles; a brother, Ervin Walk of Colorado, and 11 grandchildren.

WYNNE - Ella Lorine Sams Caubble, 50, homemaker, died of cancer Monday at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Assembly of God, where she attended, with burial in Cogbill Cemetery. Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in Wynne has charge. Mrs. Caubble, the wife of Tommy Caubble, also leaves two sons, Chris Caubble of Wynne and Jeff Caubble of Jefferson, and her mother, Martha Marie Sams; a sister, Faye Lawson, and a brother, Daniel Sams, all of Wynne. The family requests that any memorials be made to First Assembly of God in Wynne or the Cross County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO - Tommy Wayne Turpen, 48, maintenance worker at the Indian Mall in Jonesboro, Ark., died Friday at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis after an automobile accident. Services were Monday at Wesleyan Church in Caruthersville with burial in Little Prairie Cemetery. H. S. Smith Funeral Home had charge. He leaves five daughters, Jennifer Turpen, Rebecca Turpen and Lisa Turpen, all of Caruthersville, Caroline Jackson of Jonesboro and Jaroline Ridings of Kings Bay, Ga.; a son, Shawn Barber of Dexter, Mo.; his mother, Earline Turpen of Braggadocio, Mo.; four sisters, Amie Crawford, Brenda Podgorny and Janie Mayhew, all of St. Louis, and Tammie Belton of Alamo, Tenn.; four brothers, Bobby Turpen of Caruthersville, and Jimmy Turpen, Ricky Turpen and Jerry Turpen, all of Braggadocio, and 10 grandchildren.

Alice Kreis

Alice Kreis, age 57, of Austin, died Sept. 13, 2003.

Survived by son Bradley Holman; daughters Cherie Hennes and Carol Gaunitz; three sisters and five grandchildren.

Hershel Kreis

Hershel Kreis, age 64, of Austin, died Sept. 13, 2003.

Survived by son Hershel Kreis; daughters Ella Young and Cathy Welsh.
Private family services are pending for a later date. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Service.

Virginia Sulc

Virginia Faye (Smith) Sulc, 93, of Cabot died September 16, 2003. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and a retired nurse. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Sulc. Survivors include son, Vernon (and Estell) Carmical, Beebe; daughter; Floy Mae (and Donald) Webb, NLR; two grandsons, Tom (and Sandi) Webb, LR, and Marvin Carmical, Beebe; two great-grandsons, Russ and Ron (and Kim) Webb; two great-granddaughters, Bailey and Autumn Webb, all of Mayflower; brother, J.B. (and Gladys) Smith, Cabot; several cousins, nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 18 from 5-8 pm at Cabot Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at Sumner Cemetery, Cabot. Arrangements by Cabot Funeral Home, 501-843-5816.

Thelma Inez Howell

Thelma Inez Anderson Howell, 78, departed this life October 5, 2003. She was born June 3, 1925 in Cabot, Arkansas to the late Jack and Pauline Anderson. She was a lifelong resident of Cabot and a Baptist. She was a special person who enjoyed life and work.

Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, David; a daughter, Paula Jeanette; parents Jack and Pauline Anderson; twin brother and sister Ray and Fay; and three brothers, Robert, Wallace and Paul. She leaves to rejoice in her life, daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Jane and Jim Bryant of Cabot; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Ann Howell of Little Rock; three grandsons and their wives, Andy and Sonja Howell of Greenbrier, Jay and Tracy Howell of Conway and Steve and Angela Poll of St. Joseph, Michigan; and great-granddaughter Hayley Ann Howell of Alabama.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at Westbrook Chapel, with burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Cabot. Memorials may be made to Arkansas Hospice and/or Lonoke County Animal Shelter.

Phyllis A. Davidson

Phyllis Annette Davidson, 53, of Bryant, Ark. died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003.
She spent 35 years working with the public in sales related positions. She was employed as security registered representative from 1988 until her demise. She has worked for various broker security firms in Little Rock, including Masters Financial, Carlton and Associates, Morgan Keegan Company, and most recently ING Company.

Born Sept. 30, 1949, in Beebe, Ark., she was the daughter of Oliver and Floy Davidson.

Civic activities included being the founder and president of the Arkansas Junior Chamber of Commerce International Auxiliary.

Survivors include her sister, Debra K. Davidson of Cabot, Ark.; three brothers, Dennis O. Davidson, M.D., of Batesville, Ark., Steve Davidson of Conway, Ark., and Michael Davidson of Acworth, Ga.; a nephew, Dennis A. Davidson of Fayetteville, Ark.; and a niece, Blakelee Davidson of Acworth, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral was 2 p.m., Wed., Sept. 24, 2003, at Westbrook Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Beebe.

Mary Hudson Leonard

Mary “Hudson” Leonard, 82, of Cabot died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003.
She is survived by her son, Fred West of Levy; daughters, Betty Baird of Cabot, Ruby Dourghty of Texas, Erika Abney of Georgia, Sandra Hamilton of England, Barbara Popwell of El Paso and Martha Houstter of Oregon; one sister, Helen Bowman of Tennessee; 26 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Oct. 2, at National Cemetery in Little Rock. Arrangements by Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home.

Marie Neal Griffin

Marie Neal Griffin, 76, of Austin, Arkansas died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003. She was born June 10, 1927, to Jewel E. and Lucille Hilton Neal. At age 16 Marie married the love of her life, Van L. Griffin. Van L. loved horses, and he and Marie traveled to different horse shows, Van L. riding “Honey”, whom he raised from a colt.

Marie was a member of Austin Station Baptist Church for over 40 years. She spent many hours preparing meals for pot lucks and other special occasions. Her most popular dish, chicken and dumplings, was taken to the sick and families who had lost loved ones.

Marie retired from Timex after 30 years. This hard working woman’s garden was filled with fruits and vegetables that she shared with family and friends.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 51 years, Claude Van L. Griffin, and one infant son.

She is survived by her daughter, Claudette Lusty and husband (Carl), grandson Kevin Lusty and wife (Mary), great-granddaughters Alicia, Felicia and Vannette Lusty all of Austin; a sister, Edith Roberson, a sister-in-law, Wanda Shinnall and special neighbor for over 50 years, Billie Horn. Marie will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 7, at Westbrook Funeral Home, with burial in Sixteenth Section Cemetery.
