James B. Beckham Jr.

James Briggs Beckham Jr., age 72 of Cabot, died Nov. 2, 2003.

He was an AGCE Mechanic at Little Rock Air Force Base for the Civil Service for over 30 years and a United States Navy veteran. He was of the Methodist faith. He has lived in the Jacksonville/Cabot area since 1970.

He is survived by his son, Jim Beckham of Mountain Home; brother, Oscar Beckham of North Little Rock; sister, Sybil White of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services were Nov. 5, 2003 also at Campground Union Church with interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Service, Cabot.

Susan Applegate

Susan Applegate, 48, died Oct. 26, 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Kenneth; her children, Courtney and Trey; her father, James Pendergist of Little Rock; brothers James Pendergist of La Habra, Calif., Paul of Cabot and John of Helena; sisters, Patricia of Little Rock and Barbara of Omaha, Ark.

She was a member of Pi Theta Epsilon, occupational therapy students honor society at TWU. She was employed by Gentiva health services as an occupational therapist. She was active in the Plano PTA, the Girl Scouts of America and numerous church mission and outreach projects. In 2000, she was a candidate for the Plano Volunteer of the Year.

A memorial service was held Oct. 30, at the First United Methodist Church of Plano.

Memorials may be made to FUMC-SAVES (First United Methodist Church-Susan Applegate Volunteer Expedition) that will sponsor mission trips abroad.

William R. Shelton

William Riley Shelton, age 76 of Cabot, died Oct. 29, 2003.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Air Force Reserve from 1969 to 1971, and the California Air National Guard from 1971 to 1988. William was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cabot, the Christian Car Club of Cabot, and Heavenly Hounds Therapy Dogs.

Survived by his wife, Kathleen Hart Shelton; three sons, Bruce, Steven and David Shelton; daughter, Barbara Burnham; two brothers, Oscar and Custer Lee Shelton; sister, Helen Thompson; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Nov. 5, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with graveside service at Wayton Cemetery, Newton County.
Memorials may be made to the Gideons International Cabot Camp, P.O. Box 212, Cabot, Ark., 72023.

Eloise M. Sims

Eloise M. Sims, age 74, of Hazen, died Oct. 31, 2003.

She worked at the Arkansas Gazette as a clerical supervisor and was very active in the Sherrill United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and worked with the MYF.

Survivors are her husband, J.F. Sims III of the home; one son, Troy Sims of Ward; two daughters, Vicki Harraghy of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Suzanne Copper of Bella Vista; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob Howerton of Tulsa, Okla., Rev. Norman Howerton of Bethany, Okla., and Kenny Howerton of Stillwater, Okla.; five sisters, Ellarene Flanigan of Fresno, Calif., Reba Going of Stillwater, Okla., Jodi Kooken of Oklahoma City, Okla., Betty Lou Crothwaite of El Cajon, Calif., and Annie Yeoman of El Cajon, Calif.

Memorial services were Nov. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Hazen by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.

Memorials be made to the First United Youth Program in Hazen.

Walter M. Metzer

Walter Mathew Metzer of Cabot died Oct. 27, 2003.

He enlisted in the Army in June 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps until October 1945, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He served as a Communications Chief in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theatre of Operations during World War II airlifting supplies over the Himalayan Mountains into Chunking, China. Decorations and awards included the Good Conduct Medal, Legion of Merit, General Chaing Kai Shek Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Ribbon, and three Bronze Service Stars. He was a lifetime member of the Hump Pilots Association, the CBI Association, and the Hot Springs VFW Post. Walter was retired from Southwestern Bell
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Jean Barnett Metzer; a daughter, Mary Margaret Whiting; and four sons, Michael Dennis, Walter Steven, Al Wayne, and William Stewart; and five grandsons.

A rosary service was held Oct. 31, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hot Springs, where Walter was a parishioner. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Hot Springs.

Contributions may be made to the Hot Springs VFW Post.

Linda L. Richter

Linda L. Richter, 47, of Cabot died Oct. 23, 2003.
She attended Bayou Meto Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Dainia Steuber; sisters, Kathy Kirk, Debra Basham, Billie Echols, Carol Ann McGonigle; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Oct. 28 at Bayou Meto Baptist Church, with arrangements by Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home.

Loretta E. Lambert

Loretta Earlene Lambert, age 56, of Jacksonville died Oct. 29, 2003.
Survivors include her daughter, Tammy Horton of Cabot; son, Mark Lambert of Jacksonville; mother, Jessie Lorene Franks of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Catrina Cheshire of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jessie Newton of Bald Knob, Tana Eich of Newport; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 3, in the chapel of Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home, with burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.

Arrangements under the direction of Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home.

James H. McCrystal

James Harley McCrystal, 83, of Forrest City, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003. He was an assistant engineer at the Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock for 27 years and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his special friend Vera McCrystal of Palestine; two daughters, Kay McCrystal of Cabot, and Bobbie Colbert Tarrants of Palestine; three sons, Tony McCrystal of Austin, Danny McCrystal of Cabot, and Randy McCrystal of Mayflower, step-daughter Bonnie Hollowell of Brinkley, two step-sons, Marty Elliott of Palestine and Jim Bob Elliott of Dallas, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Nov. 10 at the Morgan Chapel.

Graveside services were Nov. 11, 2003 Short Cemetery in Butlerville under the direction of Morgan Funeral Home of Forrest City.

Sylvia Schutz Hurtt

Sylvia Schutz Hurtt, age 49 of Little Rock, passed away November 1, 2003. Born in Weilheim, Germany February 13, 1954.

She worked for Coca-Cola where she loved her job very much.
Survived by her parents, Fred and Erna Meyers of El Paso, Arkansas and one daughter, Nicole Hurtt of Little Rock; and two very special best friends Alicia and Christina.

“If I knew it would be the last time that I seen you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for more.”

Visitation was Wednesday, November 5, 2003 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the funeral home. Services were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2003 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville with Father Les officiating. Internment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Cabot. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Service 713 South Second Cabot, Arkansas (501) 941-7888.

James R. Munson

James R. Munson, age 74, of Searcy, died Nov. 4, 2003. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired as president of the U-Haul Company of Arkansas with 35 years of service.

He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated from Jacksonville High School. He was a member and usher of the First Baptist Church of Searcy.
Surviving are his son, Michael of Tulsa, Okla.; and daughter, Patricia Munson of Searcy.

Visitation was Thursday at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Cabot.

James Alvin Parker

James Alvin Parker, 79, of Carlisle died Nov. 8, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Parker; three sons, James Edward Parker, Norman Edge, and Allen Edge; three daughters, Darlene Dunham, Janice Williams and Sandra Smith; one sister, Ella Walters; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Des Arc Pentecost Church of God, where his funeral was held Nov. 11. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery in Hazen by Boyd Funeral Home of Lonoke.
