George Fisher

George Fisher, whose rustic cartoons about politics and government attracted a multitude of followers in Arkansas and nationally, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at his home at Little Rock.

Fisher died at his drawing board after finishing his weekly cartoon for the Arkansas Times and another cartoon for the Christmas week issue. He was 80.
Though he never syndicated his cartoons, preferring to draw mostly about Arkansas affairs, he was acclaimed as one of the great cartoonists of the 20th century. A number of his cartoons were widely reprinted, notably a cartoon he drew on the occasion of the Challenger space disaster.

Fisher didn¹t become a regular newspaper cartoonist until he was about 40, when he started drawing cartoons for the weekly North Little Rock Times, but when his cartoons began to appear regularly in the Arkansas Gazette in 1964 he developed a huge following. He would become an institution and almost the personification of the Arkansas Gazette, the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi River..
Fisher was born at Beebe.

Survivors include two brothers, Arlie Fisher of El Paso, Texas and Jim Fisher of Searcy.

Visitation was. Thursday at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Funeral was Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Beebe First United Methodist Church with burial in Beebe Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heifer Project International, 1600 Louisiana Street, Little Rock, AR 72201.

Tressie Jo Dunn

Tressie Jo Dunn, infant, of Jacksonville, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003.

She is survived by her parents, Shane and Nadie Jo Dunn; grandmother, Mary Beth Dunn of Jacksonville; grandparents, Billy and Nadie Jones of Cabot; and great-grandmother, Margaret Dickie of Jacksonville.

Funeral services were scheduled to be private for the family and close friends.
Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes, 1501 North Pierce Street, Little Rock, Ark., 72207.

Arrangements under the direction of Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home.

Willie Black

Willie (Bill) Black, 83, Beebe, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.
Funeral was Monday at Butlerville Cemetery, Butlerville.

Margaret E. Lyall

Margaret Eloise Wyers Lyall, 69, of Cabot, died Monday.
Survivors include daughter, Carla Price, of Cabot; son, Darrell Magby, of Greenbrier; four brothers and three grandchildren.

Services were Thursday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark. Interment was in Williams Cemetery.

Gail Black

Gail Black, age 58, of North Little Rock, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.
She was a member of Cedar Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Terry Diffee and Steve Secrest of North Little Rock, John Cortes of Ft. Worth, Texas, James Secrest of Washington, D.C., Michael Secrest of Ft. Smith; one daughter, Brittany Gail Black; three brothers, Bobby Black of Emmit, Michael Black of Perryville, Roger Black of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Carolyn Lovelace and Louise Price of Lonoke, Duwanna Olive of Jacksonville; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral Services were Dec. 6, at Cedar Height Baptist Church with Roller-Owens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Catherine V. Tollett

Catherine Velvian Tollett, 80, of Cabot, formerly of Magnolia, died Dec. 3, 2003.
She was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cabot.

Survivors are sons, Ronny Tollett of Cabot and Lynn Tollett of Kingwood, Texas; a sister, Linda Jo Young of Morgan City, La.; 9 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Dec. 5, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Magnolia under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc.

Emmett P. Sparks

Emmett Preston Sparks, 83, of Hazen died Dec. 6, 2003.

He was a member of Oak Forrest United Methodist Church, Little Rock.
Survivors are his brother, James E. Sparks of Texarkana.

Graveside service was Monday at Hazen Cemetery by Boyd Funeral Home of Lonoke.

Lena Watkins

Lena Watkins, age 51, of Lonoke, died Nov. 24, 2003.

Survived by one daughter, Kim Smith; mother, Annie Mae Watkins; six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services Monday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Lonoke. Services entrusted to Hubble Funeral Home.

S. George Whitehead

Sherman George Whitehead of Lonoke died Nov. 24, 2003. Previously listed incorrect daughter Bobbie Bryant Hubble.

Irene Scallion

Irene Scallion, 89, of Conway, former resident of England, died Dec. 1, 2003.
She was retired from Clearlake Footwear in England, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors are daughters, Betty Henry of Conway and Shannon Stivers of Cabot; a son, Robert Scallion of Pine Bluff; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Graveside service was Wednesday at Mulberry Cemetery Chapel in England, with arrangements by Roller-England Funeral Home.

Waverly Landrum

Waverly Landrum, 37, of Cabot died Dec. 2, 2003. She is survived by husband, Arthur Landrum; mother, Mary Landrum; children, Richard and Charles Grice, Amber Abul’Kliq and Misty Sitzmann.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Cabot Funeral Home. Funeral Service begins at 2 p.m. at the Chapel.

Frank A. Stanley

Frank A. Stanley, 70, of Lonoke, died Monday.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a retired farmer and active in truck stop ministry at the Petro Truck Stop in Little Rock.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; and mother, Mildred; and three sons, Dana Stanley and Allen Stanley both of Lonoke, and Vinn Stanley of Bryant; one daughter, Laura Vaught of Little Rock; and three grandchildren.
Funeral was Friday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, Mo., with interment in Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville, Mo.

Faye Eagle

Faye Eagle, age 90, died Nov. 21, 2003.
She was a member of Palm Street Church of Christ, Lonoke.
Survivors are her daughter, Annette Bryan; a grandson; a sister, Fredia McCuin of Sherwood.
Services were Monday at Boyd Funeral Home Chapel, Lonoke, with interment in Lonoke Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Palm Street Church of Christ.
