Roy Jerome Gerald

Roy Jerome Gerald, Sr. was born February 11, 1910 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He began his lifetime of work as a paperboy for the Baton Rouge State Times. He delivered papers and went to school by horseback. In 1924 at the age of fourteen, Mr. Gerald became an office boy for Standard Oil Company in Baton Rouge and worked faithfully until he was promoted to the position of supervisor. He married Mary Beatrice Cannon in 1930 and had two children, Roy Jerome Gerald, Jr., and JoAnn Gerald. He continued to work for Standard Oil, which later became Exxon and retired at the age of 55.

Although he was always industrious and faithful to his work, the center of Bro. Gerald’s life was his relationship with God, his family, and his life in the church community. He and his wife raised both their children with a great love for God and people, and both of them became active in ministry, Rev. Roy Gerald in St Louis, Missouri, and Mrs. JoAnn Sjostrand in Lonoke, Arkansas.

In 1975 Bro. Gerald and his wife moved to Lonoke, Arkansas to be with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. For the next 27 years, he was a pillar in his family, church and community. Bro. Gerald served faithfully as usher, trustee and member in good standing of the Apostolic church. As he grew older, Bro. Gerald became Papa Roy to a whole generation of children in the church and the community where he lived. He was even awarded a certificate of appreciation by Lonoke Elementary School as “Grandad” of the school. Papa Roy’s life is recorded in the hearts of the people with whom he served, and his love for God and people lives in his grandchildren, all of whom are currently involved in ministry.

Monday, June 23, 2003, Bro. Gerald was discharged from his life of service at the age of 93 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years and is survived by his two children: Rev.
