Harry Loren Rogers
Harry Loren Rogers, 87, of Temple, TX, formerly of North Little Rock/ Sherwood, died Aug. 27, 2005.
He graduated from Hardy High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He worked in insurance accounting for many years and retired from Pioneer Supply Company.
He is survived by his son Mark Rogers of Tulsa, OK; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wed., Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Rest Hills with Bill Barber of Jonesboro officiating. Burial to follow at Rest Hills Memorial Park.
Nancy C. Compton
Nancy “Nonnie” Coleman Compton, 81, of Little Rock, died Aug. 28, 2005.
She was born in Lonoke County, attended Lonoke Schools and graduated from the University of Arkansas. She was a personnel manager for M.M. Cohn’s for many years.
She is survived by her children, Thomas A. Compton, Ann McDearmon, both of Longview, TX, and James Drew Compton of Little Rock; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wed., Aug. 31 at Mt. Zion Cemetery
in Briggsville, near Danville.
Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Donald S. James
Donald S. James, 67, of North Little Rock, died Aug. 28, 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Mary Sue; three sons and three daughters, Donald Edward James of North Little Rock, Jimmy James of Lonoke, Billy Ray James of Cabot, Patricia Brown and Teresa Martin both of Scott, and Penny Everest of Ft. Riley, KS; four brothers; four sisters; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wed., Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home in North Little Rock with Bro. Ron Pierce officiating.
Pearl Kirk Botts
Pearl Kirk Botts, 79, of Cabot, died Aug. 28, 2005. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Fox of Cabot; son, Charles Kirk of Evans, GA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Shadden, Dorothy Polom, both of Oklahoma City, OK, and Virginia Marvin, of Nevada; and brother, Pete Clements of Cabot.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wed., Aug. 31, at Bayou Meto Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the North Little Rock Funeral Home.
Harold L. Counts
Harold L. Counts, 85, of Cabot, died Aug. 28, 2005.
He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church for over 45 years, Big Rock Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and a World War II veteran in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve. He worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad for 40 years as a machinist.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elfetta Counts of Cabot; sons, James Counts of Benton and Dr. Ken Counts, of Vilonia; daughter, Joy Maddox, of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund or Cemetery. Funeral services were held Aug. 30 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the North Little Rock Funeral Home.
Oland Charles Rye
Oland Charles “Buck” Rye, 85, Humnoke, died Aug. 28, 2005.
He was a retired farmer and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his daughters, Patsy Looney of Sherwood, and Renee Lovelady of Carlisle; sons, Danny Rye of Sherwood, Jerry Rye, Sr., of Graham, WA, and Keith Rye of Stuttgart; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wed., Aug. 31, at Roller-England Funeral Home Chapel in England, (501) 842-3939, with burial in Union Valley Cemetery.
Bonita Durnal
Bonita “Roo-Roo” Durnal, age 78, of Austin, died Sept. 2, 2005. She was the inventory control manager of Fox Meyer/McKesson Drug Company. She was one of the oldest members of Oak Grove First Baptist Church.
Bonita is survived by her daughter Sandy and Randy Hicks of Austin; one son, Lloyd Durnal of Heber Springs; two sisters, Arline Townsend of Fayetteville, Theressa Tackett of Austin; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Services were 2 Sunday, Sept. 4, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Bro. Richard Hill, Bro. Bill Singleton, Bro. Steve Zumalt and Bro. Jerry Ray officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Gideons International. Arrangements under the direction of Moore’s Cabot Funeral Home.
Elton Parker
Elton Parker was born March 25, 1920 south of Lonoke and died August 31. He started his journey as a hero by being the first born of seven children. He and his siblings eventually made their home south of Carlisle where they engaged in farming.
His most noticeable heroism occurred on the beaches of Normandy in his European tour under General Patton as a sergeant in the U.S. Army 741st Tank Battalion in World War II where he defended his country and kept us all from harm’s way both born and unborn. He received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He continued his armed forces affiliation through his involvement in the American Legion, serving in state and national capacities, as the Southeast Vice Commander. He gave many youth opportunities to find their leadership skills in American Legion programs.
He was a dedicated public servant in Lonoke County Quorum Court for 32 years. He was a hero for the small person often defending them at a cost to himself and his popularity. His character and intellect showed brightly in this capacity. The major reason he chose this service was because of poor road conditions and his desire to improve conditions in his community and not just sit back and complain even though the road to his house was not paved until after he was no longer a member of the court and the members voted to have it paved to honor his service.
His spirit of heroism shone on in other community services too numerous to name which include the Lions Club President, the Lonoke County Council on Aging, Master Mason and worthy Patron for Eastern Star. He was responsible in some part for bringing a senior center to the Carlisle area stating “Well they have one in that town so why not in Carlisle.” He was loved by many in the community and was often known to stop and have a “talk with me.”
He was a life long member of Hamilton United Methodist Church. While he may not have always worn his religion on his sleeve or expounded it loudly as from a pulpit he chose a quiet way to demonstrate the qualities of Christ in his everyday treatment of man. He made sure his church, and its members were cared for as he cared for them deeply. In this, he was a quiet hero.
He was a hero to his family in many ways. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Agnes Kring Parker, and three brothers, Otis, Alfred and Bernie Parker.
Survivors include his wife and sweetheart, Geneva Parker. She has been the hero in his life giving him care and comfort beyond compare during his time of illness. His sons, Lee (Janice), Charles (Tammy) and his daughters, Barbara (Sonny) Bowen and Beverly (Phillip) Stringfellow; a brother, Bob Parker; two sisters, Kathrine Bailey and Dorothy Elmore; grandchildren, Jake Bowden, Scott, Darla and Richey Stuckey, C.J., Tommy, and Bailey Parker, and eight great-grandchildren. His children remember him for helping calm their fears, showing them the ocean from the top of his shoulders for the first time and letting them do things their mother wouldn’t.
His stepchildren, LaRonda (Jack) Cheney and their son Clay, Mike Millwood and son Jeremy, daughter, Tabitha, Ruby (Lloyd) Busch and children, Saundra and Brian also survive him.
He will be greatly missed by many for his many acts of heroism and for his role as friend, father and husband.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Friday at Hamilton Methodist Church with interment in Carlisle Cemetery

Nadine Stover
Nadine Lassiter Stover went to be with the lord on September 3, 2005. Born August 25, 1923, she was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lula Lassiter, two sisters, Wilma Lingo and Audrey Miller and four brothers, Ernest Sr., W. A. “Dink”, Fletcher and Marlie Lassiter.
Nadine loved life and lived for her family. She was a retired revenue agent for the Lonoke County State Revenue Department. She was also a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Jim Holland of Conway; grandchildren, Wes and Keitha Holland of Conway, Triple and Whitney Miller of Plano, Texas, Steve and Angie Spencer of Little Rock; three great-grandchildren, Harper Miller, Meg Holland and Sam Spencer; a sister, Florence L. Smith of Lonoke; sisters-in-law, Maymie Lassiter, Vesta Hallmark, Adra Glover; step-sister MarySue Carlisli and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services were 11:00 Tuesday, September 6 at Lonoke First United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Lonoke Cemetery
by Boyd Funeral Home, Lonoke. Memorial may be made to Lonoke United Methodist Church.
John Daniel Roach
John Daniel Roach, age 68, of El Paso, died Sept. 3, 2005 in North Little Rock.
Survivors include his wife for over 50 years, Frances Mamie Roach of the home; nine children: Larry Roach, Linda Roach, Ricky Roach, Melissa Wooldridge, and Gene Roach all of El Paso, Rachel Cash of Cabot, LeaAnn Foshee of Amarillo, TX, Tiffiny Roach and Carol Adams both of El Paso; two sisters Charlean Mayfield and Darlene Goode both of Cabot; two brothers: Jesse Roach of Cabot and Jimmy Roach of Rusk, Texas; 18 grandchildren and six great-grand-children.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at Mt. Springs Baptist Church with interment following at Grissard Cemetery
in El Paso. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Service.
Helen Faye Woods
Helen Faye Woods, 72, of North Little Rock, died Aug. 29, 2005.
She is survived by her children, Kim Freeman of North Little Rock, Robin Kolbinskie of North Little Rock and Morris Woods,Jr., of Austin; sister, Billie Harper; brothers, Jim and Gregory West; and three grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Sept. 1 at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Arrangements were by the Roller-Owens Funeral Home (791-7400).
Homer V. Webb
Homer V. Webb, 81, of Hampton, died Aug. 29, 2005.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, was a former Calhoun County Justice of the Peace and was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Jeanette Hannegan Webb of Hampton; sons Benny of Cabot, Eddie of El Dorado, and Mike Webb of Hampton; daughter, Martha Jo Rinehart of Hampton; sisters, Mildred Love of El Dorado and Dean Labeff of El Dorado; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 31 at the Antioch Baptist Church with burial at Pickett Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Benton Funeral Home in Hampton.
