Rex Hurst

An American hero, Rex D. Hurst, (MSGT, U.S. Army Ret.) went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, and is now free of his pain and suffering. He was born December 19, 1931, in El Dorado, Ark., the firstborn child of Rex L. and Alice Inez Hardin Hurst. He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, Fred Mark.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jerolyn Perdue Hurst; his oldest daughter, Sandra and husband Gary Kirklin; his oldest son, Donald and wife Cindy Hurst; his middle daughter, Brenda Fulco; his youngest son, David and wife Martha Hurst; and his youngest daughter, Anita and husband, Mike Stevens. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren: Keith and wife Lisa KirkIin, Paige Kirklin, Jerod and wife Shellie Hurst, Melissa and husband Robert Turner, Carrie Simmons, Brandon Fulco, Jeremy, Lauren and Allison Hurst, Jennifer Milam, PFC Ryan and Blake Landers and Brandon Stevens, Tamara and husband Kerry Barnett, Andrew and wife Natalie Buckwalter, and Chelcy and husband Brent Taylor. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren: Grayson Hurst, CaIan and Dylan Novack, Trey Turner, Caleb, MaKayla and Sarah Barnett, and Collin and Lauren Taylor and one due in June. Surviving siblings are Pat Honeycutt of Spring, Texas, Barbara Hurst of Cabot, Ark., David R. “Buddy” Hurst and wife Jane of Ridgedale, Mo., and Richard Lynn and wife Rosemary of League City, Texas, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Even in his pain and suffering, he maintained an uplifting spirit and touched many lives, especially those who shared his pain, his fellow dialysis patients, and all the nurses and his doctors. Rex Hurst was a true patriot, having served 27 years in military service, first in the U.S. Air Force and then in the U.S. Army. He served two tours of duty in Korea and three tours in Vietnam, flying in assault helicopters (Hueys). He loved the military and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant E-8, before retiring at Ft. Hood, Texas in June of 1976. He never lost his devotion to the Army and his country and was especially proud that his grandson Ryan followed in his footsteps and is serving in the U.S. Army currently stationed in Iraq. During his military service he was awarded three Air Medals, one with “V” for valor, two Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Award, and numerous other awards and commendations. He was a member of the NCOA, DAV and the American Legion.

He was a longtime member of Marrable Hill Baptist Church and served for many years as a coach at the EI Dorado Boys and Girls Club. He loved to laugh and was known for his great sense of humor. He loved life, God, country and each of his children and grandchildren. One of his favorite things was a house full of “kids” having fun and making a lot of “noise.” Most of all, he loved his wife who stood by him in every aspect of his life and who was wholly devoted to him, even through the last few years of failing health.

Honorary pallbearers were his six grandsons: Keith Kirklin, Jerod Hurst, Brandon Fulco, Jeremy Hurst, Ryan and Blake Landers; and Andrew Buckwalter, Kerry Barnett, Brent Taylor, Brandon Stevens and Robert Turner.

Services were at Young’s Funeral Home in El Dorado, Sunday, March 12, with Bro. Charles Ainsworth, son Donald Hurst and grandson Jerod Hurst officiating. A military burial followed at Arlington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association, South Arkansas Nephrology, or a charity of your choice.
