Nellie M. Cunningham
Nellie Mathel Cunningham, 90, of DeWitt, died May 15, 2008. She was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Ethel, to Rufus and Mathel Poston West. She was a homemaker and a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Buddy Cunningham.
Survivors include her two sons, Charles Cunningham and his wife, Ruth, and Tommy Cunningham and his wife, Mary Lou, of St. Charles; one brother, Tillmon West of DeWitt; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 16 at Essex Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
in Ethel by Essex Funeral Home of DeWitt.

Frances Dooley
Frances Carol Hudson Dooley, 56, of Stuttgart, died May 16, 2008 at Baptist Medical Health Center-Stuttgart. She was born Feb. 27, 1953, in DeWitt, to R. C. and Frances Hudson. She was a Baptist and had worked in the deli department at Mayflower Food Store for several years.
Preceding her in death was her father R. C. (Son) Hudson; a brother, Edward Hudson; and her grandmother, Rosie Brinker.
Survivors are her mother, Frances Hudson; her husband, Kenneth Dooley of Stuttgart; one son, Jason Dwight Hudson of Stuttgart; three daughters, Stephanie Michelle Hudson Richardson of Stuttgart, Kimberly Dooley Guenther of DeValls Bluff and Alinor Dooley of Beverly, WV; four brothers, Robert Hudson and Gary Hudson of West Helena, David Hudson of Hot Springs and Richard Hudson of Dover, TN.; four sisters, Joyce Strain of Bayou Meto, Nancy Cooper of Pryor, OK., Ruby Martin of Lavaca and Paula Hammond of Stuttgart; eight grandchildren, Dwight Hudson, Chloe West, Kameran Hudson, Jamie Guenther, Paige Guenther, Rae Lynn Dooley, Jasmyne Dooley and Malachi Allen.
Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Todd Smith, were held May 19 at First Missionary Baptist Church in St. Charles with burial following in St. Charles Cemetery.
B. J. Petrus
B. J. Petrus, 74, of Stuttgart, died May 16, 2008 at his home. He was born May 11, 1935, in Slovak to Andrew J. and Sophia Wargo Petrus. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Stuttgart Rotary Club and was a retired farmer and car dealer.
He was chairman of the building committee for the Holy Rosary Parish Center where he had worked so diligently to ensure the building had a good foundation and was structurally sound. He also was responsible for starting the Cedar Tree Acres Hunting Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.
Survivors are his wife, Earlene Foster Petrus; three sons, Benny Petrus and his wife, Tammy, and Dwayne Petrus of Stuttgart, and Steve Petrus and his wife, Leslie, of Hazen; four grandchildren, Jonathan Petrus, Justin Petrus, Erin Petrus and Shannon Petrus; three brothers, Lewis Petrus of Gary, IN., Daniel and Betty Petrus of Pine Bluff and Andrew Wayne and Carolyn Petrus of Carlisle; seven sisters, Louise Van De Mark of Oklahoma City, OK, Ernestine Stevens of Nacogdoches, TX, Grace Rate of West Bend, WI, Judy Woodard of Dallas, TX, Mary Jo and Norman Chambers of Rogers, AR, Betty Sue Roberts of Ft. Worth, TX, and Rosie Parker of Garland, TX.
A funeral mass was held May 19 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church by Monsignor John A. Janesko and Monsignor Jack Harris, with burial in St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery
in Slovak by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Holy Rosary Parish Center or Arkansas Hospice, 2501 W. 28th St., Pine Bluff, AR.
James Edward "Edgar" Frizzell
James Edward “Edgar” Frizzell, 97, of Stuttgart died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at England Manor Nursing Home.
Edgar was a retired rice, soybean and cotton farmer and fish farmer, who loved duck hunting and attending auctions. He was instrumental in the development of the fish-fry fundraisers in Humphrey and surrounding areas. Edgar was a member of Humphrey Baptist Church. He was on the Humphrey City Council and Humphrey Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
Edgar was born Jan. 3, 1911, at Tomberlin, Ark., the son of Jess and Emily Tally Frizzell. He was the oldest of seven children.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 53 years, Jesse; son, Bobby Frizzell; grandsons, Eddie Payer and Brady Frizzell; brothers, Woodrow Frizzell, Billy Frizzell and Jesse Ray Frizzell; and sisters, Ona Belle Burk and Meter Nelson.
Survivors are son, Wayne (Martha) Frizzell of Stuttgart; daughters, Betty (Billy) Payer of Sheridan and Pat (Tim) Ables of Humphrey; daughter-in-law, Mickey Ann Frizzell of Stuttgart; eight grandchildren. Sammy Frizzell, Tammy Browning, Morgan Frizzell, Bryan Payer, Gail Payer, Blake Frizzell, Timmy Ables and Adam Ables; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Martin Frizzell of Allentown, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at Humphrey Baptist Church with burial following in Flynn Cemetery. His grandchildren will be pallbearers and his great-grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart.
Memorials may be made to Humphrey Baptist Church or the donor’s choice.
The family will be at the home of Wayne Frizzell, 1412 Hwy. 79 South in Stuttgart.
Ruth Duncan Bumpus
Ruth L. Duncan Bumpus, 74, of Stuttgart passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Stuttgart Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Bumpus was born May 7, 1934, in England to Willie Elijah and Stella Poor Duncan. She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
Survivors are her husband of 47 years, William A. Bumpus; son, William Claude Bumpus of Stuttgart; daughter, Nora Frances Vaseur of Clarendon; three sisters, Edna Coburn and Bernice Dillon of Lonoke and Virginia Coburn of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Bumpus, Joy White, Stella Bumpus, William Bumpus Jr. and Jessica Bumpus; and seven great-grandchildren, Destiny White, Michael White, Troy Woods, Jordayn Woods, Kaitlin Woods, Tikerra Danner and Charlie Bumpus.
Funeral services, officiated by Sis. Linda Lyons, were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stuttgart Holiness Assembly of God Church with burial following in Almyra Cemetery.
Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart.
Daniel Frank Lamont
Daniel Frank Lamont, 61, of Humnoke died Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Baptist Health in Little Rock.
Mr. Lamont was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Little Rock to Frank and Myrtle Wilson Lamont. He was a retired boiler operator with Entergy at White Bluff and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of Hankins and Hayes Deer Club.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Lamont.
Survivors are his wife, Sandra Bradbury Lamont; one son, Larry Lamont of Sheridan; two daughters, Michelle Carter of Paragould and Carla Gray of Conway; two sisters, Janet Chadwell and Peggy Lamont, both of Humphrey; his mother-in-law, Edna Bradbury of Humnoke; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with one on the way; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church with burial following in Flynn Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-4 Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart.
William Marion Hartz
William Marion Hartz was born March 1, 1922, in Wheatley, Arkansas and died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. He moved with his family at the age of 3 to Stuttgart where he and his seven siblings were reared in a loving Catholic family. After graduating from Subiaco Academy in 1941, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas but as did many others of the "Greatest Generation", he served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Marion was Vice President of Jacob Hartz Seed Company, a family seed business, pioneers and innovators in the soybean seed industry. He retired from the business after the sale of the company in 1983 and pursued in an independent business in agricultural exports. His involvement in the family business led him to become active in many industry associations and other agricultural and trade related boards and groups. Marion served as President of the Southern Seedmen’s Association as well as the Arkansas Seed Dealers Association. Additionally, Marion was a founding member of the Arkansas Association of Wheat Growers, and a long time member of the Arkansas and American Soybean Associations. With his involvement in exporting seed to many international markets, Marion worked diligently in promoting agricultural exports through his participation in the President’s Export Council, and served as its Arkansas chairman. Through his efforts, Jacob Hartz Seed Company was honored with the President’s “E” Award of that group which recognizes those companies for their efforts in exporting their products to foreign markets.
During his lifetime Marion served his community and state through his participation or support of many groups, including the Stuttgart Rotary Club, Ducks Unlimited, the Boy Scouts of America, the Arkansas Mental Health Association Board, the UAMS Foundation Fund, and a member of the original Board of CARTI. For many years Marion was involved in Republican Party politics both at the state and county level to try to promote a strong two-party system in Arkansas. Governor Winthrop Rockefeller appointed Marion to the Arkansas State Racing Commission in 1967 and the Banking Law and Study Commission.
During his career and retirement, Marion enjoyed travel. The seed business took him around the world, including one of the first agricultural exchanges to visit China. He also enjoyed hosting friends and business associates he met in his work and travel here in Stuttgart.
Marion is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Broyles Hartz, and his children, Beth Hartz Sparks and husband Jerry of Texarkana, Hope Hartz of Fayetteville, Greg Hartz and wife Janet Hunt Hartz of Little Rock, and Doug Hartz and wife Leslie Jones Hartz of Stuttgart. Marion's grandchildren are William Sparks of Monroe, LA, Sarah Sparks Diebold of Fayetteville, Brad Spooner of Richmond, VA, Bill Spooner of Ashburn, VA, Ben Hartz of Little Rock, Meredith Hartz Shelton of Fayetteville, Rachel Hartz and Whitt Hartz of Stuttgart along with four great-grandsons. Marion was fortunate enough to spend many enjoyable hours with his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. One of his favorite pastimes was duck hunting with his sons and grandchildren.
Marion is also survived by his brothers Jacob Hartz Jr., and Alfred F. Hartz of Stuttgart and a sister, Marjorie Ellen McNutt of North Little Rock, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob Hartz, Sr. and Mary Isabel Hartz, as well as brothers Bernard Jacob Hartz, Richard ”Dick” Hartz, and sisters Annabelle Kleiner and Mary Jane Flannery. Of special note, Marion is survived by a lifelong friend and employee of over 50 years, Mae Frances McCrary.
Marion's faith, love, charity, forgiving spirit, and character are and will be examples for his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. It is only fitting that this man who was such a wonderful parent departed this life the weekend of Father's Day because he was an example of a Christian fatherhood in the truest sense.
Visitation with the family will begin Monday, June 16th at Holy Rosary Parish Hall in Stuttgart at 5:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service at Holy Rosary Church at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Marion’s entry into eternal life will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church on Tuesday, June 17th.
