Nancy Faye Helms Lewis Nancy Faye Helms Lewis, age 58 of Stuttgart, Arkansas, was born on the 25th day of June, 1949. She abided this world on Friday, May 23, 2008, when she was called home to be with her Lord Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven. She was raised a Pentecost which was instilled in her. She was the beloved daughter to the late William Edward Helms and Elizabeth Helms. She is preceded in death by her four sisters, Vonnie Allen, Evelyn Clayton, Melba Hodges and Peggy Aultman. First and foremost, she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and best friend, who gave her all to her two sons, Eddie and Donnie Hughes of Lonoke; four grandchildren, Christopher Lewis, Brandon Hughes, Brice Williams and Frankie Hughes, all of Lonoke. The two greatest accomplishments and joys of her life were her sons. She survived by two brothers, John and Joe Helms of Humphrey, and one uncle, James Otis Helms (Uncle Buddy) and his wife Mary Helms of Pine Bluff. Also she survived by five nieces and nine nephews and their children. She loved spending time with family and friends. Her closest and long time friends was Cathy Gordon of Stuttgart, Tom and Anna Martin of Lonoke and a special friend Phillip White of Rison, for which she cared and loved deeply. She loved camping and family outings. Nancy Lewis was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Baptist Medical Center of Little Rock that treated our mother and her illness. A special thanks to Hospice Home Care and all that helped her in her final days and to Lisa Recap and Alyssa York for all they did to make mother’s last days peaceful as they could. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Waylon Gordon, will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Sunshine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home. Active pallbearers are Jeff Canada of Lonoke, Gary Luker of Hot Springs, Jamie Wallace of Jacksonville, Lefty and Larry Williams of Lonoke and Austin York of Maumelle. Gladys E. Mitchell Gladys E. Mitchell, 82, of Carlisle, formerly of Stuttgart, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Stuttgart Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Mitchell was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Gillett to Fred Inman Sr. and Jimmie Greenhill Inman. She was retired from Knoll Laundry and was a member of First Baptist Church of Hazen and the Order of the Eastern Star. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John E. Mitchell; and a brother, Waymond Inman. Survivors are her daughter, Pat Carter of Carlisle; one brother, Fred Inman Jr. and wife Alice of Stuttgart; three grandchildren, John Carter and wife Amy, James Carter and Teresa Boles and husband Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Christopher and Hannah Boles. Funeral services, officiated by her grandson Bro. John Carter, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery Visitation will be from 4-6 Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home. Earl J. Hooks Albert Earl Joseph Hooks, age 75, passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 with family at his side. Born March 30, 1933 to Julia Makovec and Joseph Francis Hooks, Earl was a second-generation farmer in the community of Slovak, Arkansas, raising rice, soybeans and wheat on the Grand Prairie for nearly 60 years. He took part in enormous changes in farming, from the hand harvesting of rice in the 1930s to the large mechanized operations of today. He was a member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a U.S. Army veteran. Earl was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and his great passion was duck hunting with family and friends on his beloved farm. Earl is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lois Ryan Hooks of Slovak; by two daughters, Lisa Hooks of Little Rock and Sandra and Kevin Shipley of Searcy; by his grandson Ryan Joseph Shipley and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial rosary will be held at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak, Arkansas on Friday, May 23rd at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be at Sts. Cyril & Methodius at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 24th, with burial following in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or the Knights of Columbus Council #3998. Lola Maude Halley Lola Maude Halley, 88, of Stuttgart, widow of Albert Paul Halley, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Springbrook Health and Rehab in Hazen. Mrs. Halley was born Dec. 1, 1919, to Jesse and Margaret Zimmerman Stahley in Arkansas County. She was advertising director at The Stuttgart Daily Leader for over 25 years and was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Stuttgart. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Wanda Stahley, Molly Stahley and Ellen Owens; and brothers, George Stahley and Jesse Hesse. Survivors are two sons, Ray Allen Halley and wife Peggy of Stuttgart and Robert Lynn “Bob” Halley and wife Teresa of Pensacola, Fla.; one daughter, Annette Faye Carper and husband Billy John of Mississippi; one brother, Bill Stahley; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Stuttgart. The family requests memorials be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 209 S. Grand Ave., Stuttgart, Ark. 72160. M.L. "Moody" Smith Moody Lee “M.L.” Smith, 85, of Stuttgart died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hot Springs. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Bunn, Ark., to Joe Clement and Annie Pink Crowder Smith. He was a farmer and a member of the United Methodist Church at Roe and Euclid Lodge 130 where he was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was also past president of Treasure Isle Homeowners Assn. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John R. Smith; a sister, Eunice Hibbard; and his daughter, Barbara McPherson. Survivors are his wife of 65 years, Opal Gavin Smith; two sons, John L. Smith Sr. and wife Betsy of Stuttgart and Jackie C. Smith and wife Sharon of Livingston, Texas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Thomas Bormann and Bro. Ronnie Inman, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grand Prairie Evangelical Methodist Church with burial following in Ulm Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Helms, 87, of Stuttgart passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at home. She was born April 1, 1921, in Owatonna, Minn., the daughter of Fred S. and Grace E. Gardener Ring. An employee, and later owner of, Credit Bureau of Stuttgart, she will be much more remembered for her passion and art of cake decorating. She loved her church, First Christian Church of Stuttgart, where she taught the SSS Class, was very active in Christian Women’s Fellowship and was an Elder Emeritus. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, and her grandson, James Lamecy Helms. Survivors are two sons, Michael J. Helms of Stuttgart and Fred Helms and wife Donna of Hazen; three daughters, Patricia Stanley and husband Kelly of Stuttgart, Linnea Sisco and husband R.D. of Conroe, Texas, and Grace Hankins and husband Robert of England; a sister-in-law, Marian Ring of Owatonna, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Sherry Horton, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be made to First Christian Church of Stuttgart. Jackie Lee Gipson Jackie Lee Gibson, age 57, of Stuttgart died Friday May 2, 2008, at Baptist Health in Little Rock. Mr. Gibson was born on April 14, 1951, to Jack and Bertie Gibson in McCamey, Texas. He was a retired truck driver. Survivors are two sons, Curtis and Bradley Gibson, both of Odessa, Texas; two brothers, Tommy Gibson of Booneville, Ark., and James Gibson of Stuttgart; three sisters, Shirley Ryan of Odessa, Texas, Sue Moore of Knippa, Texas, and Doris Young of Springdale, Ark.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
