Ruth Taggart Tarkington Ruth Taggart Tarkington, 91, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Crestpark of Stuttgart. Mrs. Tarkington was born May 3, 1916, in Arkansas County, the only child of John Edgar Taggart and Charlotta Woodall Taggart. She was the granddaughter of Samuel and Isabel Street Taggart of Almyra and Alex and Caroline White Woodall of Hazen, Ark. She married James Edward Tarkington on Dec. 5, 1934. She was a graduate of Stuttgart High School, and a member of First Christian Church and a homemaker. She was a dedicated and diligent worker in her church and community as well as a beloved mother and grandmother to her family. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, an infant son and her husband. She is survived by her children, John Ed Tarkington and wife Beverly and Barbara Stroh and husband Glenn. Mrs. Tarkington is also survived by four grandchildren, Sam Tarkington (Gayla), Will Tarkington (Amy), Steven Stroh (Suzanne) and Steffany Stroh Shelton (Ken); and seven great-grandchildren, Spencer, Darby, Katie, Kelsey and Kalli Tarkington, Blake Bisbee and Olivia and Kelly Stroh. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Sherry Horton, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie. Clarence G. Melkovitz Clarence G. Melkovitz, 81, of Hazen passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008. Clarence, also known as PePaw, was born Oct. 6, 1926, to Anthony and Anna Melkovitz in Slovak, Ark. He was a lifelong member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak. He attended school through the sixth grade at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School. At the age of 18, he was drafted into the Army and served in World War II in Japan. After returning home, he engaged in farming. On Jan. 27, 1960, he married Pauline Uhiren. They continued to farm until his retirement 16 years ago. After his retirement, he continued to work for Joe Berg Farms and worked for Stovesand Auction as a loader. Clarence was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and a third-degree Knight. He served on the church Parish Council and was a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of Fairmount Ruritan for 26 years, served on the Board of Directors and was voted Man of the Year in 1989. He loved to hunt and duck guide. He enjoyed making kolbasi and helping Pauline cater events and polka dance. He was a big fan of the Hazen Hornets and rarely missed watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with his family. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Robert, Joe, Edward and Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of almost 48 years; and three daughters, Pam Carter, Mary Ann Hill (Buddy) and Patricia Reynolds (Tony), who all lived just down the road from them. PePaw had seven grandchildren, Christopher, Whitney and Allison Hill, Lisa Carter Troy (Patrick) and Emilea Carter and Mallory and Hannah Reynolds. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with burial following in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart with rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak. Pallbearers are Patrick Troy, Chris Berg, Jeff Uhiren, Jeff Marek, Mark Marek, Steve Melkovitz, Joe Melkovitz Jr. and Bill Melkovitz. Honorary pallbearers are Randall Uhiren and Johnny Melkovitz. Kay McCollum Switzer Kay McCollum Switzer of Little Rock passed away Jan. 1, 2008, surrounded by family in her daughter’s home in Norman, Okla. She was born March 31, 1941, in Stuttgart, Ark., the daughter of Kenneth “Slick” McCollum and Regina Tull McCollum. Kay received her degree in mathematics from the University of Arkansas where she performed as a feature twirler and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was married to Barry Layne Switzer of Crossett, Ark., from 1963 to 1981, and together they raised three children. Throughout her life, Kay was surrounded by family and friends who adored her, many beloved pets, big and small, and she could blow a duck caller as well as any man. Preceded in death by her parents, Kay is survived by her children, Greg Switzer and wife Alaina and their children Zachary and Andrew of Nashville, Tenn.; Kathy Switzer Miller and husband Hunter and their children Skyler, Macey, Laynee and Slater of Norman, Okla.; and Doug Switzer and his children Jacob and Luke of Norman, Okla.; sisters Shorty McCollum Brown of Stuttgart, Ark., and Diane McCollum Powell and husband Alan of Phoenix, Ariz.; and her longtime companion, Stephen Lynn Lookadoo of Stuttgart, Ark. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Jason Gilbow, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Stuttgart. Pallbearers are Merv Johnson, Bobby Bell, Dale Boutwell, Armando Rosell, Hunter Miller, John “Knock’em” Moss, Jay Moss and Brad Moss. Honorary pallbearers are Bucky Benham, Chris Reed, Rick Sokora, John Tull III, Michael Hartley, Todd Hartley and the late John Russell Powell. Internment will follow at Lone Tree Cemetery in Stuttgart by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Turpin Funeral Home. Betty Sue Glover Wilson Bush Betty Sue Glover Wilson Bush, 72, of Stuttgart passed away Thursday July 10, 2008, at St. Vincent’s North in Sherwood. Betty lived a full, blessed life which began in Wooster, Ark., where she was born and raised. She attended Greenbrier High School and was a small, but important member of the basketball team. On a visit to her sister in Stuttgart, Ark., she met her first love and subsequent husband, Claude Wilson. They married on Sept. 5, 1953, and blessed the world with two daughters. Betty was a faithful employee of Arkansas Power and Light for 33 years. After the passing of Claude, Betty met and was courted by Ronnie Bush who became her loving husband. Betty was loved by many and lived an active life. She was an avid doll collector, enjoyed frequent trips to the casino and loved to play cards. Above all else, she loved her family. Her life was a blessing to all who knew her and she will be dearly missed by all. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star – Stuttgart Chapter 102, SRMC Auxiliary serving as treasurer for 12 years, Royal Neighbors, RSVP and Southside Baptist Church. Besides Claude and Ronnie, she was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Olla Lee Ford Glover; and a brother, Jimmy Glover. Survivors are two daughters, Pamela Higden and husband Brent of Sherwood and Claudia Wilson of Spokane, WA; two brothers, John Glover and wife Bobbie of DeWitt and Max Glover and wife Jody of Albuquerque, NM; three sisters, Halogene Mason of Wooster, Robbie Arvidson and husband Ray of Albuquerque and Norma McDonald and husband Bill of Anchorage, AK; three grandchildren, Claudia Goodson and husband David, Rosemary Ezell and husband Dustin and Elizabeth Davis and fiancé Jeff Upton; and two great-grandchildren, Ann and Blaine Goodson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home. Frazier Humphrey - Surrounded by his family and in his own home, the Angels came for Arthur Charles Frazier, 90, on July 11, 2008. He was born November 24, 1917 in rural Arkansas County. He lived and farmed there his entire life except for his tour of duty during WWII. He served as a medic for the 306th Bomb Group operating out of Thurleigh, England. It was there that he met the love of his life, Joyce. They married after the war and walked hand in hand down the uneven road of life for 60 wonderful years. He was a member of the Humphrey Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Clarkie Frazier; his two brothers, Frank and Herschel; and his dear wife, Joyce Ayton Frazier. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Davis and her husband Jim, of the home; and his son, Randy C. Frazier and his wife Alisa of Wye Mountain, Arkansas. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Lee Bradshaw and wife Tracie of Dallas, Ga.; Clint Bradshaw of Humphrey, Sharon Geater and husband Steve, of Humphrey; Laura Norman and husband Wade of Alexandria, Va; David C. Frazier of Wye Mountain; and a step-grandson, Mike Davis; and seven great-grandchildren, Whitnei Gentry, Cody Bradshaw, Sarah Kleeschulte, Emilee Geater, Jett Geater, Audrey Joy Norman, and Justin Aktins; and one great-great grandchild, Mikaylynn Bradshaw. Funeral services will be conducted by his son, Randy Frazier and the Grandsons, and will be at 10 AM on Monday, July 14 at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Williams Cemetery. Box 454, Humphrey, AR 72073 Ronald Gilbert Franzen Ronald Gilbert Franzen, 89, of Stuttgart passed away Friday, July 11, 2009 at Chambers Nursing Center in Carlisle. Mr. Franzen was born July 17, 1918, in Gillett to G.H. and Hilda Seimers Franzen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Mark Franzen. Survivors are his wife of 51 years, Leonora Seidenstricker Franzen; daughter-in-law, Polly R. Franzen; grandson, Johnathan Tyler Franzen; and a brother, Wayne George Franzen and wife Lucile, all of Stuttgart. Following graduation from Stuttgart High School where he was a member of the Ricebird football team, he received a bachelor’s degree from Hendrix College where he also played football. He was a retired Army Major having served in World War II with the Quarter Master Corp. After his return to Stuttgart, he became a businessman, owning the Rice Center Supply John Deere Dealership, among other business ventures. He was a member of the Stuttgart Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow and he and Leonora were members of the Good Sam RV Club in Stuttgart. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Ricebird Booster Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially grandson Tyler and Polly’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raible. He and Leonora enjoyed traveling both in their RV and attending a WWII reunion in Europe. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Church with his wife. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jack Gillam, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Turpin Funeral Home.
