Dr. Robert Dean Laird Dr. Dean Laird, a native of Arkansas County, went to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ, Jan. 18, 2009, on what would have been his mother's 100th birthday. Dr. Laird was born July 31, 1930, near Lodge's Corner. To the great surprise of his parents William McKinley and Bessie Laird, he was a twin. Dr. Laird was preceded in death by his parents. His survivors are his wife, Brenda Sewell Laird, their children Bill Laird, wife Tonita, Bob Laird, wife Julie, Linda Laird Wilkerson, husband Mark, Ray Tipton, wife Shauna, their grandchildren, Blake and Brooke Laird, Elizabeth and Michael Wilkerson, and Sydney and Shelby Tipton, his sister Imogene Oliver, and husband John, two nephews, one niece, and his in-laws from his wife's family. Dr. Laird grew up on a farm near Crocketts Bluff where life centered around Shiloh Methodist Church and the farm. He helped his father with rice farming and raising cattle. He would raise a calf and enter it each year in the local 4-H contest. He attended a one-room schoolhouse at Brough. His teacher, Mrs. Eunice McGraw, taught all grades. He would not only do his schoolwork, but also the schoolwork of older students. This allowed him to advance an extra grade in one year. Dr. Laird's parents instilled in him the belief that he could achieve anything he wanted in life. At the ripe old age of 13, he started driving a truck his father had converted into a bus, loaded with local students to DeWitt for school. At DeWitt High, he excelled in academics and sports. Travel back and forth to the farm did not allow time for practicing football, so he moved into a rooming house so he could be a DeWitt Dragon. After high school and serving as a MP in the Army, he attended Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia where he played football for the Reddies and Coach Duke Wells. He graduated from Henderson with a Bachelors of Science in Education. He then attended the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and received a Masters of Education in School Administration. Inspired by Mrs. McGraw and Coach Wells, he returned to Arkansas County to teach and coach in the Stuttgart school system. After a few years of teaching, he became the principal of Stuttgart Junior High. He coached the area American Legion baseball team to the state championship. He was so proud of these young men. He left Stuttgart to enter the University of Tennessee Dental School. During that first year he was elected President of his class. Upon his graduation, Dr. Laird returned to Stuttgart and opened his own practice. He would serve the citizens of the Grand Prairie for 40 years. During these years he served as the President of the Southeast Arkansas Dental Association, was a member of the Arkansas Dental Association Peer Review board, and was elected to the Stuttgart School Board where he served a term as President. He retired in 2006. Dr. Laird was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Stuttgart and the Shepherd Sunday school class. Visitation will be at Turpin Funeral home at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22. Funeral services, officiated by Dr. Sam Roberts, will follow at 2 p.m. with burial in Lone Tree Cemetery. Pallbearers are Marvin Hagaman, Don Koch, J.W. Green, Donnie Duch, Sterling Sloan, John C. Knoll and Larry Marshall. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Jerry Sparrow, Derrell Cox, Pat McMahen, Dr. Jim Duke, Dr. Kirby McGraw, Dr. Willie Crabtree, Dr. Shelby Woodiel, Jerry Black and the Shepherd Sunday school class. Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Stuttgart or the American Cancer Society. Jack Allen Tilson NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Jack Allen Tilson, 91, formerly of Stuttgart, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Christus Santa Rose – New Braunfels Hospital. Mr. Tilson was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Texarkana, Texas, to Thomas J. Tilson and Mary Virginia Ensminger Tilson. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving from Oct. 29, 1940 to Aug. 31, 1945. He was a retired United States Postmaster in Snyder, Texas. After retirement, he and his wife relocated to Stuttgart. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stuttgart. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vermilla McCauley Tilson in 1999, at which time he moved to Texas to be near his son. Survivors are his son, Allen Reid Tilson of New Braunfels, and one granddaughter, Tara Shannon Tilson. Graveside services, officiated by Dr. Sam Roberts, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lone Tree Cemetery chapel with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Archie A. Vice Archie A. Vice, 61, of Ulm went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009. He was born July 22, 1947, in DeQueen, Ark. He was a farmer for many years and worked for Hartz Seed Company until becoming disabled. Archie loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and playing computer video games. Most of all, he loved and cherished his family. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judy Barnett Vice; two daughters, Frances Vice Ideker and husband Russell of Ulm and Stacy Vice Burks and husband Rusty of Garland, Texas; granddaughter, Terin Leigh Harrison of Garland; grandson, Cheney Edward Ideker of Ulm; great-granddaughter, Dixie Lee Harrison of Garland; brother, Frank A. Vice of Austin, Texas; sister, Linda Molina and husband Adolfo of Seboyta, N.M.; and special son-in-law, Terry N. Harrison of Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank B. Vice and Lucille Vice. A graveside service, officiated by Bro. David Inzer, will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Ulm Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Martha Jean Snow Rowland Martha Jean Snow Rowland, 73, of Stuttgart, passed away on February 10, 2009, at Baptist Health Medical Center – Stuttgart after a short, but valiant fight against cancer. Jean was born in Magnet Cove, Arkansas, and was raised in Pine Bluff, where she graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1953. Jean was a retired secretary serving many years with Comet Rice, Riviana Foods and Producers Rice Mills in Stuttgart. “Mrs. Jean” was loved by many and lived an active life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and singing in the choir at Southside Baptist Church in Stuttgart. Memorable moments include camping trips to Bull Shoals and Lake Ouachita, summer trips to Lake Village with her family, preparing family meals, especially during the holidays, and the many special moments filled with laughter, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Duke of Hot Springs; and her parents, Ted E. and Ida Mae Snow of Pine Bluff. She is survived by her husband, David E. Rowland, with whom she spent 55 “golden years”; a daughter, Pam Mancilla and her husband Octavio of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; a son, Tracy Rowland and his wife Penni of Weatherford, Texas; and one brother, Jimmy Snow and his friend Neva of Wagoner, Oklahoma. She was known as “Meem” to her three grandchildren, Chad Rowland and his wife, Melissa; Kyle Rowland and his fiancé Amanda, all of Texas, and Leslie Vera and her husband Sebastian of Florida; and one great-grandchild Jaycie Leeanne Rowland, of Texas. She is also survived by her very dear personal friends for the past 30 years, Keith and Joyce Helm of Stuttgart. The family would like to thank Bro. Gregg Greenway for his many prayers and visits, Dr. Jason Tullis, Dr. Natalie Gentry and Dr. Dennis Yelvington and their staffs, as well as the staffs of Hospice Home Care and Baptist Health – Little Rock and Stuttgart for their kindness and compassion during the past two months. Thelma Henderson Black HUMPHREY - Thelma Henderson Black, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Baptist Health – Stuttgart. Mrs. Black was born Dec. 6, 1912, in the Sunshine Community to A.J. “Alonzo” Henderson and Effie Bigham Henderson. She married Russell Black on June 12, 1932. She was a lifelong resident of the Humphrey community with exception of the time that her husband farmed at Lake Dick. She was retired school teacher and a member of the Humphrey Methodist Church. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph, Woxie, Leslie “Toad”, A.J. and Dale; and her son, James Elton Black. Survivors are daughter, Carol Sue Griggs of Humphrey; son, Jerry (Alice) Black of Humphrey; daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Black, brother, Felton Henderson, and sister, Lucille Moritz, all of Stuttgart; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Humphrey United Methodist Church with burial following in Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. tonight at Turpin Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Humphrey United Methodist Church. Reaves, David Cecil David Cecil “Doc” Reaves, 55, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at his home. David was born Nov. 10, 1953, in Portsmouth, Va., the son of George Cecil and Alice Calvert Reaves. Following graduation in 1972 from Stuttgart High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army retiring 18 years later after becoming disabled. During in military career, he served at several military bases, including oversees duty in Korea, Italy and Germany where he was awarded numerous Army certificates of achievements with reference to helicopter maintenance and aeroscout crewchief of an OH-58 helicopter. He was a Baptist. David was a loving father and grandfather and a very special son. Preceding him in death were his father, George Cecil Reeves; and his grandparents, Dave and Jewel Calvert and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reaves. Survivors are his mother and step-father, Alice and Harold Tye of Stuttgart; son, David Cecil Reaves II of Texas; daughter, Ashley Nicole Reaves of Louisana; brother, Clifford George Reaves of Pine Bluff; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Gregg Greenway, are 2 p.m. Monday at Southside Baptist Church. Burial will military honors will follow in Hamilton Cemetery near Humnoke by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home.
