JOHN LAWRENCE WOODARD

Mr. John Lawrence Woodard, 89, of Athelstan, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Osceola. Born Oct. 29, 1912, in Fayetteville, Tenn., he had been a member of Keiser Methodist Church, a former member of the boards of directors of Home Oil Co., Federal Land Bank, Production Credit Association and Little River Gin Co.. He had been a landowner and farmer.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Woodard; three sisters, Sarah Gibson, Helen Ashley and Thelma Ashley; a grandson, James David Alexander; one stepson, Edward Beardsley; and one stepdaughter, Frances Morgan.

Mr. Woodard leaves his wife, Ola Mae Woodard of the home;

One daughter, Betty Lawrence Woodard Alexander of Wilson;

One stepdaughter, Peggy Benefield of Calico Rock;

One stepson, Robert Newton of St. Louis;

One sister, Mrs. Evelyn Hughes of Manila;

Eight grandchildren, William Jackson Alexander, MD, of Denver, Mapra Kathleen Gentry of Houston, Elizabeth Jeanne Stratton of Bentonville, Dr. Eldon Lawrence Alexander of Seal Beach, Calif., Julie Isabelle Smith of Fairview, Tenn., Steven Bradshaw Alexander of Benton, Pam Klaus of St. Louis and Lynne Newton of Minneapolis, Minn.; and

Twenty great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Roller-Swift Funeral Home Chapel in Osceola, with burial following in Ermen Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Stone will officiate.

The family will receive visitors at 9 a.m. prior to service time.

KENNETH DOUGLAS MARTIN

Memorial services for Mr. Kenneth Douglas Martin will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery in Blytheville. The Rev. Thad Grimstead will officiate. Mr. Martin, who was 39 when he died April 2, 1999, was born and raised in Michigan and a resident of Tulsa, Okla., in his later years. He had served in the U.S. Navy and, after discharge, pursued a career as a nurse.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary.

Mr. Martin leaves his parents, Louis and Donna Mahan of Dell;

Four brothers, Ronald Wilcoxson, Michael Wilcoxson, Greg Martin and Steve Martin; and

Four sisters, Joyce Prim, Sheri Hammond, Donna Kay Walker and Rachel Johnson.

Cobb Funeral Home of Blytheville is in charge of arrangements.

LORENE COCHRAN METZGER

Mrs. Lorene Cochran Metzger, 93, of Blytheville, the widow of William Taft Metzger, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Blytheville. Born Oct. 3, 1909, at Cottonwood Point, Mo., the daughter of James and Maggie White Cochran, she was a lifelong area resident and a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union Circle. She was a former member of the Armorel Home Demonstration Club and the Eastern Star. According to family members, she loved flower arranging, fishing and watching Atlanta Braves baseball.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Ricky Keith Metzger.

Mrs. Metzger leaves her children, LaVerne Metzger Parrish of Searcy, W.T. Metzger Jr. of Blytheville and Rex Metzger of Newport;

One sister, Modene Steele of Benton;

Six grandchildren, Jeri Parrish Bryan of Cabot, Michael Parrish of Blytheville, Brenda Metzger Travis of Maumelle, Wayne Metzger and Barbara Metzger Hackney, both of Newport, and Alan Metzger of Tuckerman; and

Twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Cobb Funeral Home Chapel in Blytheville, with the Rev. Pam Estes officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

NELLIE ROBERTSON MUSE

Mrs. Nellie Robertson Muse, 81, of Clinton, La., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. She was a native of Greensburg, La.

Mrs. Muse leaves her husband, Robert Muse Sr.;

Four sons, Hosea Muse and Alphonze Muse of Clinton and Robert Muse Jr. and Larry Muse, both of Memphis, Tenn.;

One daughter, Cora Rogers of Greensburg;

One sister, Mrs. Peggy Hughes of New Orleans; and

Two brothers, Freddie Roberson of Baton Rouge and Roscoe Roberson of Blytheville.

Religious services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Day's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Clinton. The Rev. Willie Brumfield will officiate, and burial will follow in Pipken Chapel Cemetery in Chipola, La.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

MJR Friendly Service Funeral Home Inc. of Denham Springs, La. is in charge of arrangements.

W.B. 'DUB' STEWART

Mr. W.B. "Dub" Stewart, 76, of Osceola, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Jonesboro. Born Dec. 6, 1925, in Osceola, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Osceola and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Stewart leaves his wife, Wanda Stewart of Osceola;

Two stepsons, Mike Creecy of Alabama and James Creecy of Senatobia, Miss.;

One brother, Max Stewart Jr. of Osceola;

One sister, Tommie Lou Barber of Osceola; and

Six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Roller-Swift Funeral Home Chapel in Osceola, with burial to follow in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Allen Rainey will officiate.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marie Turnbow
Marie Turnbow, age 83, of Lynn, died June 17, 2000, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born at Lynn, she had lived in Lynn all of her life. She was a member of the Lynn United Methodist Church and the Lynn Home Extension Club.

Survivors include her husband, Gus Turnbow; a son, Sloan Turnbow, Walnut Ridge; a brother, Talmadge Brannon, Walnut Ridge; and four grandchildren, Tim Turnbow, Valerie Sloan, Lance Turnbow and Lauren Turnbow.

Funeral was Tuesday afternoon at 2 at House-Gregg Chapel at Lynn with Rev. Ron Newberry officiating. Burial was in Dry Creek Cemetery at Lynn under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Randy Glenn, Gerald Ratliff, Gene Hunter, Burt Jones, Max Durham and Tommy Brannon.

Kathy Lee Anderson Simmons
Kathy Lee Anderson Simmons, age 48, of Hoxie, died Sept. 11, 2000, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born May 29, 1952, in Powhatan, she was the daughter of Sam Henry and Georgia Sneed Anderson. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her father, three brothers, two sisters and a grandchild.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Ray Simmons, whom she married in April of 1991 in Walnut Ridge; her mother, Georgia Sneed Anderson, Walnut Ridge; two daughters, Barbara Ann Webb Pittman, Hoxie, and Georgia McPhink Tedder, Judsonia; two sons, James Ray Webb, Black Rock, and Samuel E. Webb, Portia; two brothers, Clifford Anderson, Lynn, and John Anderson, Black Rock; six sisters, Barbara Wagster, Benton Harbor, Mich., Anna Cole, Guin, Ala., Ollie Bush, Milan, Ill., Betty Locke, Smyrna, Tenn., and Thelma Bender and Carol Logue, both of Calona, Ill.; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral will be Thursday afternoon at 2 at Higginbotham Chapel with Rev. Raymond Goza officiating. Burial will be in Old Bethel Cemetery in Denton under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.

Pallbeareres will be Joe Locke, Bill Bender, Dale Logue, Paul Bush, Readus Cole, Phillip George, John Stowers and Gene Stowers.

Visitation will be this evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Bessie Spurlock
Bessie Spurlock, age 81, of Walnut Ridge, died Sept. 30, 2000, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born at Walnut Ridge, she lived in the Walnut Ridge area most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron Spurlock Sr., in 1990; a son, Bob Spurlock; a sister; and a brother.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Spurlock, Walnut Ridge, and Bud Spurlock, Dallas, Texas; two stepsons, Warren Spurlock, Walnut Ridge, and C.W. Spurlock, Armorel; two sisters, Louise Collins, Walnut Ridge, and Micky Carter, Rockford, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial were Monday afternoon at 2 at Lawrence Memorial Park in Walnut Ridge with Rev. Steve Trail officiating. House-Gregg Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Jimmie John Alderson
Jimmie John Alderson, age 63, of Ravenden, died Feb. 9, 2000, at the Regional Medical Center of NEA in Jonesboro, following a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 29, 1936, at Piggott, he was the son of William and Eva Pearson Alderson. He was a maintenance manager and was of the protestant belief.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Western Alderson, whom he married April 8, 1955; three sons, Ray Alderson, Virginia Beach, Va., Gary Alderson, Lutz, Fla., and Robbie Alderson, Ravenden; two sisters, Mary Ann Myers, Marquand, Mo., and Melba Foster, Piggott; a brother, Paul Alderson, Fredericktown, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday afternoon at 2 at the United Methodist Church of Ravenden with Bro. John Stoll officiating. Burial was in Dale Cemetery, near Ravenden, under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Greg Ragsdell, Roscoe Smith, Wayne Hendley, Kenny Hendley, Perry Brandaberry and William Sanders.

Lydia Alice Bell Collins
Lydia Alice Bell Collins, age 94, of Sidney, died Sept. 28, 2000, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.

Born March 2, 1906, at Corning, she was the daughter of William and Laura Belle Smith Ritenour. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Collins; her parents; two sons, Ira T. Collins and an infant; a daughter, Cora Lee Jones; a brother, Ray Havens; a sister, Ferry Ritenour; a half-sister, May Wright; and a grandson, Charles Collins.

Survivors include five sons, Arthur Henry Collins; Harriston, Ill., Gale Eugene Collins, Sidney, William David Collins and Lloyd Newton Collins, both of Ravenden, and Walter Wilbur Collins, Warrenton, Mo.; two daughters, Laura Belle Marshall, Ravenden, and Rosa Faye Collins, Sidney; a sister, Lou Ellen Hall, Walcott; special friends, ted and Peggy Farris; 34 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Monday morning at 10 at Qualls Chapel in Cave City. Burial was in Collins Cemetery at Wirth under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.

Pallbearers were Wayne Collins, Nathan Marshall, Dan Smith, Tim Collins, Allen Collins and Daniel Smith.

James L. "Sam" Dickson
James L. "Sam" Dickson, age 78, of Black Rock, died Feb. 9, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock.

Born Jan. 19, 1922, at Ravenden, he was the son of William J. and Elsie Dent Dickson. He was a World War II Army veteran. He had been a contract carpenter for 30 years and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Annieville.

Survivors include his wife, Cleda Knauss Dickson, whom he married Feb. 19, 1943; a daughter, Beverly Dickson, Little Rock; three sons, Edward Dickson, Little Rock, David Dickson, Guayama, Puerto Rico, and Jerry Dickson, Pocahontas; a brother, Charles Dickson, Imboden; seven sisters, Ruby Lawrence, Lila Snow, Velma Gore, Lennie Fortson, Wilma Trenholm and Gladys Malone, all of Imboden, and Melba Cooper, Southaven, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday afternoon at 2 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Annieville with Jerry Clements officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Annieville under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.
