Monsignor John Albert Janesko Monsignor John Albert Janesko, 84, former pastor of Holy Rosary Church, Stuttgart and Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Slovak, died Friday, June 19, in his 57th year as a Catholic priest in the State of Arkansas. Educated at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School in Slovak, he entered St. John Home Mission Seminary in 1940, following his two brothers who preceded him in service as priests of the diocese of Little Rock. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood in May of 1952 by Bishop Albert Fletcher. His assignments were as assistant pastors of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Little Rock and St. Joseph in Tontitown, before being named to his first pastorate at St. John, Engelberg in 1958 then pastor of St. Michael Church, Hardy (now Cherokee Village). He was subsequently assigned as pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Stuttgart for eight years before being assigned to Our Lady of Fatima in Benton. In 1985 he was named pastor again at Holy Rosary in Stuttgart, and in 1997 he was assigned pastor of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Slovak. He remained pastor of both Churches until his retirement in the spring of this year. He was named Chaplain of His Holiness Pope John Paul II with the title of “monsignor” in 2004. Monsignor John was an exemplary priest for all of his 57 years of ministry, beloved, respected, and revered. A Vigil service will be prayed for Monsignor Janesko on Sunday, June 21, at 7 p.m. in the Church of Holy Rosary, Stuttgart. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Monday, June 22, at 11 a.m., also at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Bishop Anthony Taylor, Bishop of Little Rock, presiding. Burial will take place at the Janesko family plot at Slovak by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Ellsworth Downing Ellsworth B. Downing, 98, of Stuttgart, a retired Army Engineer Colonel, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 22, 1911, in Stuttgart to Harry Ellsworth Downing and Florence Ellen Barricklow Downing. He graduated from the U.S. military Academy in 1933 and received a commission in the Army Corps of Engineers where he served 30 years. His assignments included both staff and command of military and civil works activities of the Corps of Engineers with overseas tours of duty in British West Indies and in Europe in World War II and later in the Korean War and then in Japan. Among the many awards he won include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Bronze Star and the Army Accommodation Medal. Upon retirement from the Army in 1963 he became manager of Arkansas Irrigation Company where he served for 13 years. In addition to a BS degree from the military Academy he held a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from MIT and was a graduate of the Army War College and CG&S School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he had served on the administrative board, the trustees and a number of committees. He was a member and past president of the Stuttgart Rotary Club. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Thelma Trice Downing; one brother; and three sisters. Survivors are daughter, Carolyn Gray and husband Neal of Cordova, Tenn.; son, Harry E. Downing and wife Linda of Nevada, Texas; five grandchildren, Connie Woods, Laura Sheriff, Harry Downing Jr., David Gray and Mark Downing; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandsons. A graveside service with full military honors is 9 a.m. Monday at Lone Tree Cemetery chapel with the Rev. Larry Kelso officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Turpin Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church. Joyce Marie Bone Stephens Joyce Marie McGhie Bone Stephens went to be with her Lord and Savior June 27, 2009. She was born Dec. 4, 1920, to John and Lottie McGhie. She graduated from DeWitt High School in 1938. She worked as a seamstress for years and retired from Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1985. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lottie McGhie; husbands, Claude Franklin Bone, father of her three girls, in 1963, and James Maxwell Stephens in 1988; one brother, Walton “Fibber” McGhie; and three sisters, Alice Carle, Margaret Dillion and Juanita Carter. Survivors are three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Richard Childress of Stuttgart, Jan and Philip Upton of Tulsa, OK and Donna and Bob McNeely of Cabot; stepdaughter and spouse, Marilyn and Dick Hardwick of Holly Grove; stepson and spouse, Donald and Gwen Stephens of Stuttgart, two sisters, Lois Faye Wilson of Florida and Donna Jean (Charles) West of DeWitt; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at St. John’s Lutheran Church followed by graveside services at Lone Tree Cemetery in Stuttgart by Turpin Funeral Home. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home. A heartfelt thanks goes to our youngest sister Donna for her strength and compassion as mothers primary caregiver these last 3 ½ years. She met all of Mothers wants and needs selflessly and went above and beyond to make mother comfortable. She also gave mother the courage and strength to face the final leg of her journey with grace and dignity. A special thanks to Dr. Patricia Vickers of Springhill Baptist NLR and the entire staff of Hospice Home Care of Little Rock. Courtney Burlison Courtney Jordyn Burlison, 17, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 30, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Courtney was born June 20, 1992, in Cambridge, Ohio. She was a senior at Stuttgart High School where she was involved in many organizations and was employed at Credit Bureau of Stuttgart. Courtney was a member of Delta Beta Sigma and Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by an aunt, Ashley Brooke Burlison, and her great-grandparents, Thad and Mildred McSwain. Survivors are her parents, Amy Burlison and Jason Scheiderer of Stuttgart; two brothers, Christopher Scheiderer and Jonathan Scheiderer; grandparents, Terrye and Rudy Richter of Maryville, Tenn., Mickey and Debbie Burlison of Humphrey, Sue and Harry Weddle of DeValls Bluff and Emil and Carrol Scheiderer of Roe; great-grandparents, Raymond and Darlene Burlison of Stuttgart; and several other relatives. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Sam Morgan and Bro. Larry Forte, are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Lone Tree Cemetery. Kyle Burlison Kyle Mathew Burlison, 21, of Maryville, Tenn., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 1, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Kyle was born July 14, 1987, in Little Rock. He was a student at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ashley Brooke Burlison; a niece, Courtney Jordyn Burlison; and his grandparents, Thad and Mildred McSwain. Survivors are his son, Peyton James Burlison; his parents, Terrye and Rudy Richter of Maryville, Tenn, and Mickey and Debbie Burlison of Humphrey; two sisters, Kim Cook (Chad) of Fayetteville and Amy Burlison (Jason) of Stuttgart; step-sister, Tina Stoops (Shane) of Ico, Ark.; four step-brothers, Eric Whitcomb (Amy) of Benton, Rudy Richter of Rochester, NY and Andrew Richter and Philip Richter, both of Sterling, VA; grandparents, Raymond and Darlene Burlison of Stuttgart; and several other relatives. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Friday at Turpin Funeral Home. Noel Guy Bracewell Noel Guy Bracewell, 86, of Stuttgart passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Bracewell was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Almyra, the son of Dale DeWitt Bracewell and Rosalie Bennett Bracewell. He was an Army Air Corp veteran serving during World War II and a veteran of the Pacific Campaign. He was a retired farmer and member of Grand Prairie Evangelical Methodist Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Lee Duey; and two sisters, Joan Wright and Kathleen Mair. Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Lorene Coker Bracewell; three sons, Thomas Dale Bracewell and wife Tammy and Noel Ray Bracewell, all of Stuttgart, and John Ronnie Duey and wife Martha of Longview, Texas; daughter, Sherry Diane Lovett and husband Hal of Almyra; one brother, Fletcher Ray Bracewell of Almyra; two sisters, Bertie Calhoun of England and Janet Hollanger of Dallas; three grandchildren, Aaron Guy Bracewell, Brian Zack Lovett and Allison Danielle Lovett Smith; and three great-grandchildren. A. Eugene "Gene" Vail A. Eugene “Gene” Vail, 76, of Stuttgart, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Baptist Health Medical Center – Stuttgart. Mr. Vail was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Hazen to George E. Vail Sr. and Mary Jane Goacher Vail. He and his wife Margie were owners of Stuttgart Home Center and he was a member of Arkansas Furniture Association. He was a past president of the National FFA Alumni Association and held numerous offices for state and local FFA Alumni Associations. He was a Masonic Lodge member and served on the Stuttgart City Council from January 1997 until December 2006. He was a deacon and charter member of Park Avenue Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Margie L. Dawson Vail; son, Doug Vail and wife Carol of Brownsburg, Indiana; daughter, Marcia Freemyer and husband Charles of Stuttgart; two brothers, George (Lucille) Vail of Hazen and Edward (Helen) Vail of Stuttgart; two sisters, Francis Ewing of Stuttgart and Leta (Charlie) Perry of Hazen; five grandchildren, Chuck Freemyer and wife Hollie of Almyra; Gina Freemyer-Knight and husband Tuan of McKinney, Texas, Eric Freemyer of Stuttgart, and Katherine and Caroline Vail of Brownsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Trevor and Dawson Freemyer of Almyra. Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Ralph Ruffin, are 10 a.m. Friday at Park Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Stuttgart. Burial is 2:30 p.m. Friday at Center Point Cemetery in Hazen by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Turpin Funeral Home.
