June Newsom
(March 9, 1936 - November 16, 2010)
June Newsom age 74 of Shady Grove died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Mena Regional Health System. She was born on Monday, March 9, 1936 to Raymond Oliver and Roma Heath Simpson in Mena, Arkansas.
In her early life, June went to nursing school and received her LPN Degree and started a long working career at Mena Regional Health System. She worked for 50 years during all the changes that had occurred over the years. She loved taking care of the sick and really enjoyed working in the Labor and Delivery, where she could rock the newborns. She loved her family very much. She enjoyed spending time with them and playing with her grandchildren. She was married to the love of her life Jimmy Newsom for 45 years and raised five children. Her family was her greatest accomplishment in life and was best mom her children could ask for. Some of her hobbies included cooking, crocheting, reading and camping. June was of the Methodist faith.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jimmy Newsom; one son Kenneth Newsom and one daughter Deanna Newsom.
Survivors include two sons Larry Newsom of Van Buren and Kerry Weiss and his wife Lisa of Mena; one daughter Carol Lane and her husband Houston of Mena; nine grandchildren Shauna Wagner and husband Jacob, Tanner Lehmann, Karley and Tracer Newsom, Tyler, Traven, and McKayla Lane, Cody and Kady Weiss all of Mena; two great grandchildren Jordan and Hayden Wagner of Mena; her special friends Randy and DeDe Myers of Hatfield, Hershel and Pam Bell of Cove, Tom and Phyllis Whittenborn of Van Buren; her many friends at Mena Regional Health System; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 19, 2010 at the First Assembly of God in Mena at 2:00 P. M. with Reverend Ron Tilley officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service in Mena. Visitation will be Thursday, November 18, 2010 form 6-8 P. M. at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel in Mena.
The family will gather at the home of Carol Lane.
Pallbearers will be Perry Barrett, Lucas Nichols, Tom Whittenborn, Neyland Newsom, Steve Casey and Gary Simpson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Gatewood and Randy Myers.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Relay for Life C/O Carol Lane, 2706 Cassell Drive, Mena, Arkansas 71953.

Vivian Ruth Johnson
(November 13, 1919 - November 12, 2010)
Vivian Ruth Cook Johnson, age 90, a lifelong resident of Mena, passed away Friday, November 12, 2010 at Twin Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center, Arkadelphia. She was born November 13, 1919, in Mena, Arkansas to the late G. H. and Frankie Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Bess Paris; four brothers-Charles B. Cook, Gilbert H. Cook, Earl W. Cook, and Archie J. Cook.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mena where she served in the nursery for many years and was deemed “Baby Johnson” by the children whom she cared for.
Vivian is survived by two daughters-Vivian Henderson and husband David of Little Rock and Freddie Jolley and husband Woody of Arkadelphia; three grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as “Meem Meem”, Susan Hickingbotham and husband Herren, Little Rock; Melissa Pate and husband Grant, Tupelo, Mississippi; and Ted Jolley and wife Lori, Little Rock; and six great grandchildren, Hayden and Christian Hickingbotham; Katherine and Emily Pate; Lucy and Piper Jolley. She is also survived by several nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 19, at First United Methodist Church, Mena, at 1:00 p. m. A memorial service will follow at the church at 2:00 p. m. with Reverend Gary Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park, Mena, Arkansas . There will be general viewing at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Nursery, 501Ninth Street, Mena, AR 71953 or the charity of one’s choice. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Richard Lochala and staff of Mena, Gisele Royster (special friend,) Peachtree staff of Mena, the Baptist Health Center at Arkadelphia and Twin Rivers Health and Rehabilitation, Arkadelphia.

Jody L. Buchanan
(July 23, 1963 - November 11, 2010)
Jody L. Buchanan, age 47, of Hatfield, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010 in Hot Springs .
He was born July 23, 1963 in Newark, Ohio to the late David P. Buchanan and Thelma Mae Wiley Buchanan. He was united in marriage to Juanita Guttry. Jody worked for Smith Pallet Company and was a loving son, husband, step-father, brother, and friend.
He is survived by:
Wife: Juanita Buchanan of Hatfield, Arkansas
Mother: Sue Buchanan of Cove, Arkansas
Step-daughter: Amanda Lane and husband Johnny of Waldron, Arkansas
Brothers: Jerry Paul Wiley of Huey Town, Alabama
Monty Ray Buchanan of Buck Eye Lake, Ohio
Sisters: Donna Gene Smith and husband Ricky of Princeton, West Virginia
Patty Shelton of Mississippi
He was preceded in death by his father, David Buchanan.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 2:00 p. m. at the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Charlie Sutton officiating. Interment follows in Six Mile Cemetery at Hatfield under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening, November 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.

James Ernest McCulley
(March 12, 1947 - November 11, 2010)
James Ernest McCulley age 63 a lifelong resident Hatfield died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at his home. He was born in Hatfield on Wednesday, March 12, 1947 to the late Lonnie and Lessie Hamilton McCulley.
James worked for the lumber company for several years, then laid bricks and rock until his retirement. He was a proud United States Veteran. He loved deer and turkey hunting and spending time with his hunting buddies, especially his grandson, Jesse.
James is preceded in death by his parents.
James is survived by Charlotte Sullivan; his children Brittan McCulley of Fort Smith, Laurie Lively of Mena and Shawn Hill of Rockport, Texas; grandchildren Anastasia and Naudia McCulley of Fort Smith, Jesse and Hannah Lively of Mena and T. J. and Justin Hill of Rockport, Texas; his brother Milburn McCulley of Mena; his nieces Shelly Creel of Hatfield; and his emotional support friend, Goober.
James had been sent for cremation under the direction of Hall Funeral Service in Mena. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 19, 2010 at James’ residence.
In lieu of flowers memorial can be made to the Humane Society of the Ouachita, 366 Polk 50, Mena, Arkansas 71953.

George William Bearfield
(March 30, 1936 - November 9, 2010)
George William Bearfield age 74 of Mena died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at St. Joseph Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs.
He was born on Monday, March 30, 1936 to Kenneth Eugene and Florence Geise Stritof Bearfield in Olean, New York. George was a compassionate person and was a hugger. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Mena and was a very active member. If there was an activity at the church George was always there to lend and hand. He also sang in the choir and helped in the Food Pantry. George always loved his Country. He started his military career in the United States Army and after doing two years, almost immediately joined the United States Navy. He served 20 years before retirement. He served 17years on different submarines during this time. George served during the End of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He retired as Chief Petty Officer and an E-7. This is George’s greatest accomplishment in life was being able to serve with honor. He was a member of the Legionnaires, VFW and the National Geographic Society. He collected coins, model car collection and enjoyed woodworking. George had many loves in his life but, his wife Alcia was the light of his world. He loved her cooking and enjoyed just being together.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one step daughter Tabatha Dicus; one step grandchild Kelli Trahan and two sisters Mary Livak and Irene Tully.
Survivors include his wife Alcia Bearfield of the home; two stepsons Donald Comstock of Brownwood, Texas and Troy Trahan of Lake Charles, Louisiana; six step daughters Debbie Bearfield of El Cajon, California, Tammy Young of Mena, Karen Duran of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mae Vincent of Lafayette, Louisiana, June Stanwood of Denver, North Carolina; one brother Melvin Bearfield of Mohave Valley, Arizona; one sister Alice Blauvett of Murphy, North Carolina; thirteen step grandchildren and one step great grandchild; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 10:00 A. M. at the First Assembly of God in Mena With Reverend Ron Tilley officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Park with full military Honors. Visitation will be Friday, November 12, 2010 from 6-8 P. M. at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel.
Pallbearers Troy Trahan, David Young, David Champion, Paul Trahan, Dr. Jeff Jones and Daniel Egger.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the VFW Post 2278, Mena, Arkansas 71953 or the American Cancer Society, 169 Hillcrest Lane, Mena, Arkansas 71953.

Vernon Nealy Lay
(February 7, 1926 - November 9, 2010)
Mr. Vernon Nealy Lay, age 84, a resident of Vandervoort, Arkansas, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Hot Springs.
He was born February 7, 1926 in Mena, Arkansas. He was retired from the U. S. Navy and was a Sabbatarian.
Mr. Lay was preceded in death by his parents, Ferman and Ida Wever Lay; two brothers, Clarence (Foots) Lay and Albert (Bud) Lay; and one sister, Velma Ruth Thomas.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emma L. Lay of Vandervoort; two sons, Theron Lay of Hillsboro, Texas and Gary Lay of Squaw Valley, California; two daughters, Barbara Shaw of Cleburne, Texas and Lujean Flanary of Vandervoort; 11 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Lay will be held at a later date.
Cremation arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Tommy W. Spurgin
(August 14, 1947 - November 8, 2010)
Tommy W. Spurgin, age 63, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Monday, November 8, 2010 at his home. He was born August 14, 1947 in Board Camp, Arkansas to the late Walter Spurgin and the late Connie Sikes Spurgin. Tommy was a field technician in the poultry business and was also a veteran, serving his country in the United States Navy. He was active in the Benevolent Protection of the Elks Lodge, where he was a friend to all. Tommy was a loving father, grandfather, step-grandfather, and loyal friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by:
Daughters: Christy Spurgin Hull and Billy of Mena, Arkansas; Connie Spurgin Deason and husband Dustin of Sebastapol, California
Adopted Daughter: Anne Czarnetski and husband Daniel of Mena, Arkansas
Mother of his Daughters: Julia Ann Roche’ of Lower Lake, California
Brothers: David Spurgin and wife Linda of Mena, Arkansas; John Spurgin and wife Addilee of Poteau, Oklahoma
Sisters: Marie Shepek of Shafter, California Lila Williams and husband Arvil of Mena, Arkansas; Madge Peugh and husband Larry of Greenwood, Arkansas; Donna Lay and husband Larry of Mena, Arkansas
Grandchildren: Joshua Lee Ozanich, Issac Patrick Amos Galloway Deason, and Liliana Ruth Harlow Deason, of Sebastapol, California; Lindy Ann Hull of Mena, Arkansas
Step-grandchildren: Allyson Hull and Katy Gorden of Jacksonville, Arkansas
Adopted Grandchildren: Kelly Brian Jacobs, Kia Marie Cottman, Anthony Cottman, and Levi Cottman
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Connie Spurgin, father and mother in-law, Miles and Ruth Davis, brothers-in-law, Bill Lonsford and Michael Davis and sister-in-law, Bonita Lonsford Ferguson
Funeral services with military honors will be Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 2:00 p. m. at the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Donnie Jewell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
A visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday evening, November 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Edward Cook, Kevin Spurgin, Darrel Spurgin, Billy Hull, Doug Doughty, Pete Hillard, Skip Smith, Dan Lindy, Charlie Bailey and “The Animals”

RosaLee C. Wilhite
(August 16, 1938 - November 7, 2010)
RosaLee C. Wilhite, age 72 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Sunday, November 7, 2010 in Mena. She was born August 16, 1938 in Boles, Arkansas to the late Henry Woodson Rogers and the late Freda Josephine Pettit Rogers. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a loving mother, Nana, and friend.
She is survived by:
Son: Norman Wilhite of Mena, Arkansas
Daughters: Becky Wilhite of Fayetteville, Arkansas Vanessa Neal of Heavener, Oklahoma
Grandchildren: Tennille Phillips Walker and Zack Walker of Wesley, Arkansas Christopher Neal of Savannah, Georgia Erin Neal Glinski and husband Jake of Poteau, Oklahoma Wayman Charles Bell, III of Fayetteville, Arkansas She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Josephine Rogers and a grandson, Bobby Lee Phillips.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 10:00 a. m. at the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Pastor Daniel Kaffenberger officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday evening, November 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Neal, Wayman Bell, Jake Glinski, Zack Walker, David Lee Wilhite, Jay Gardner, and Bobby Lee Phillips. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Bass, Johnny Miner, Dennis Wilhite, Wes Falls, and Scott Rodgers.
