Lloyd Lee Lott
(June 13, 1972 - November 5, 2010)
Lloyd Lee Lott age 38 of Houston, Texas formally of Mena died Friday, November 5, 2010 at a Houston Hospital. He was born on Tuesday, June 13, 1972 to Johnny Joe and Sandra Louise Boggs Lott in Mena.
Lloyd graduated from Acorn High School in 1990 and then finished his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas. He decided to stay in Texas where he started teaching History to the middle school students then moved up to high school where he continued teaching History. He loved being a teacher and the rewards that it brought to him. Lloyd was known affectionately as “Big Lott” by his colleagues and student at Jefferson Davis High School in Houston. Lloyd enjoyed photography and working on genealogy and collecting antiques for his students to learn about the history of our great Nation. He would travel hundreds of miles to go talk to a World War II Veteran about their experiences. Lloyd was a member of the Acorn Baptist Church and was a member of numerous clubs and organization throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his mother Sandra Lott, his paternal grandparents Lee and Ruby Lott and his maternal grandparents Milton and Ruth Boggs.
Survivors include his father and step mother Johnny and Norma Lott of Mena; thousands of “His Kids”; several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 2:00 P. M. at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel in Mena with Brother Lyndell Lyda and Robert Lott officiating. Interment will follow in the Concord Cemetery
in Ink.
Pallbearers will be Greg Singleton, Gary Singleton, Jon Daniels, Kyle Daniels, Josh Boggs, Rodney Lott and Ron Heath.
Wanda M. Loyd
(August 20, 1928 - November 5, 2010)
Wanda M. Loyd, age 82, of Grannis, Arkansas went to her heavenly home November 5, 2010. She passed away at DeQueen Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born August 20, 1928 in Amarillo, Texas to the late David Henry Allmon and the late Edith Williams Allmon. She was united in marriage to Leon Loyd on August 13, 1949. She worked for Alltel for 23 years and for the Wal-Mart Pharmacy for several years thereafter.
Mrs. Loyd was a member of the Wickes Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday school and was very active in the youth program.
She was a devoted wife, mother, Christian and friend.
She is survived by:
Husband: Leon Loyd of Grannis, Arkansas
Son: Charles Loyd and wife Jan of Cabot, Arkansas
Grandchildren: Harold L. Loyd of Lewisville, Texas Kim Loyd Morgan and husband Clint of Van Buren, Arkansas
Great grandchild: Jared Loyd
Brothers-in-Law, Sisters-in-Law, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David Henry and Edith Allmon and her brother, Jack Dale Allmon.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 8, 2010 at 2:00 p. m. at the Wickes Church of the Nazarene with Brother David Baker and Brother Leon McCleskey officiating. Interment follows in Baker Cemetery
at Wickes under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
A visitation for family and friends will be Sunday evening, November 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be John Roberts, Mike James, James Jenkins, Thomas Jenkins, Wayne McCarley, and Dustin McCarley.
Sharon Louise Hester
(December 11, 1948 - November 3, 2010)
Mrs. Sharon Louise Hester, age 61, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in Mena. She was born December 11, 1948 in Mena, Arkansas to the late William A. Hensley, Jr. and to Grace L. Lewis Hensley. She was united in marriage to the late James A. Hester. Sharon was a school teacher for over 30 years and was a loving homemaker, daughter, cousin and friend.
She is survived by:
Mother: Grace Hensley of Mena, Arkansas
Cousins: Steve Phillips and wife Kathy of Mena, Arkansas Philip Hensley and wife Tracy of Mena, Arkansas
And a multitude of family and friends too great to mention.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 5, 2010 at 2:00 p. m. at First Presbyterian Church in Mena with Reverend J. Q. Williams officiating. Interment follows in Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be general.

Kate Adeline Hoover
(December 9, 1909 - November 1, 2010)
Kate Adeline Embry-Martin-Hoover, age 100, a resident of the Fountain Lake community, Garland County Arkansas, passed away on November 1, 2010 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Ms. Kate was born at Board Camp, Arkansas in the front parlor of her grandmother’s home on December 9, 1909, the same room in which her mother was born. She was the oldest of four children. When it was time for her to attend high school she moved to her grandparent’s home in Mena, Arkansas where she helped milk cows and keep house before the school day began.
Kate graduated Valedictorian of her class of 1924. Having taken a “Normal” course, Kate began teaching school in the small community of Highland near Cherry Hill. It was there she first met Wendell Hoover. She said her heart skipped a beat when she saw Wendell for the first time and they dated for some time. Later, she married John Martin and moved away from the Cherry Hill area. After 17 years their marriage ended.
Kate worked at the Red River Arsenal during and after World War II, working with early computer records. In 1955, Wendell came to see her again at her home in Nash, Texas. She said it was like they picked up where they left off and after several months she married Wendell and his three children.
At the age of 45 she became a mother, a preacher’s wife and a Methodist. Becoming a mother at that age was no easy task and becoming a minister’s wife was a challenge as well. Using one of her favorite sayings, she simply “backed her ears and plowed the row. ”
Kate is survived by daughters Gail Burton of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Deborah Kolden of Chicago and son, Howard Hoover of the Fountain Lake community; Grandchildren Kelly Kott, Karen Burton, Christopher Kolden and Leia Kolden; Great-grandchildren Stephen Kott, Ashleigh Byrne, Samuel Kott, Shayne Byrne, Kayne Byrne, Seth Kott, Tara Kott and Oliver Wade-Kolden; Great-great grandchildren Mya Byrne and Aiden Edward Byrne; Nephews Fred Embry, Jim Embry, Tom Embry, Sam Martin and Jim Martin; her faithful companion Cody, her lap dog; and cousins Beth Boone and John Pickett.
A memorial service officiated by Reverend Fred Hunter will be held at Oaklawn United Methodist Church, Hot Springs, Arkansas on Friday, November 5, at 2:00 pm. A private family interment will be at Mena, Arkansas on Saturday morning. Arrangements for burial were made through Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
Honorary pallbearers include Christopher Kolden, Stephen Kott, Sam Kott, Seth Kott, Shayne Byrne and Kayne Byrne. In lieu of flowers, Kate’s request would have been memorials given to your chosen church or charity. Kate lived her life with deep faith, determination and unconditional love. She was a woman filled with grace and humility.
Adelia Anna B. Overturf
(March 25, 1923 - November 1, 2010)
Adelia Anna B. Overturf age 87 of Richardson, Texas formally of Mena died Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Medical City Dallas Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She was born on Sunday, March 25, 1923 to Andrew Jackson and Elsie Durbin Wendt in Idabel, Oklahoma.
She was the wife of Leo Overturf and married him in southeast Oklahoma. After moving a few times, Leo developed a lively used auto business in the 50’s and transitioning to aircraft sales and repair in the 60’s establishing his own airport in Moore, Oklahoma. In the early 60’s moving the family moved to Mena, Arkansas establishing Overturf Aircraft operation in Mena. Here she maintained the home for her family on the airfield for many years until her husband passed in 1973. She took work as a domestic in Oklahoma City for 20 plus years until retiring in 2006 returning to Mena for 4 years then moving to Richardson to live with her nephew Lee West.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo Overturf; two sons Andy Overturf and Roy Dean Overturf; one brother Roy Wendt and one sister Jean West.
Survivors include one son Jerry Overturf of Mena; one sister Mabel Jo Williams of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren Brad Overturf of Richardson, Texas, Connie Overturf of Kansas City, Kansas, Sherri Ann Overturf of Little Rock and Lisa Gay Overturf of Mena; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 12:00 P. M. at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel with Father Norbert Rappold as celebrant. Burial will be at held at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Service in Mena.
Juanita Nell Varner
(December 24, 1934 - November 1, 2010)
Juanita Dell Varner died Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Rich Mountain Nursing Rehab in Mena. She was born on Monday, December 24, 1934 to William Jess and Corine S. Weaver Hairrell in Cove, Arkansas.
Juanita was married to her husband Troy for 48 years and enjoyed spending time with him. They worked together for 35 years where Troy was the manager and Juanita was the secretary of Mena Tobacco and Candy Company. She was a simple woman and loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. Juanita enjoyed quilting and playing with her dog, Corky. She enjoyed traveling all over the United States and was a member of the Queen Wilhelmina Good Sam’s RV Club. She was a member of the Hatfield Church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Troy Varner.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Jill and Tony Lambert of Wesley, Arkansas, and Connie and Russell Mabry of Mena; seven grandchildren: Kristina Johnston and her husband, John, of Skiatook, Oklahoma; Cherish Lambert and Heath, of Wesley, Arkansas; Nathaniel Lambert of Wesley, Arkansas; Tori Pate and husband, Jon, of Mena; Tia King and husband, Kenny, of Fayetteville; Jayme Ozanich and husband, Lanny, of Mena; and D’Ann Fryar and husband, William, of Mena; eleven great-grandchildren: Christian, Max, Troy, Tristen, Trent, Evan, Jessica, Olivia, Paeton, Avery, and Hope, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10:00 A. M. at the Hatfield Church of Christ with Van Ledbetter officiating. Interment will follow in the Six-Mile Cemetery
under the direction of Hall Funeral Service in Mena. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel from 6-8 P. M.
Pallbearers will be Sammy Varner, Rodney Varner, Randy Varner, Scotty Irby, Nathaniel Lambert and Jon Pate.
Hollis Ray Smith
(September 6, 1921 - October 27, 1943)
TSGT Hollis Ray Smith, age 22, of Cove, Arkansas passed away October 27, 1943 in the Monrobe Provence of New Guinea during World War II.
He was born September 6, 1921 in Techu, Texas to the late Earnie E. Smith and the late Ara Irene Ashby Smith.
He was serving in the United States Army Air Forces when his plane went down in service of his country in 1943.
He is survived by:
Nephews: Boyd S. Smith of Cove, Arkansas Robert W. Smith and wife Cheryl of Benton, Arkansas
Niece: Gayla Smith Claborn and husband David of Cove, Arkansas
Sister-in-Law: Ina Smith of Cove, Arkansas

He was survived by his parents the late Earnie and Ara Smith and his late brother Boyd F. Smith.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 22, 2010 at 2:00 p. m. in the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Berry Godwin officiating.
Interment follows in Pleasant Grove Cemetery
at Cove with full 
military honors rendered.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
A visitation for family and friends will be Sunday evening, November 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
Frankie Jolene Lewis
(April 1, 1933 - December 31, 2010)
Frankie Jolene Lewis, age 77, of Ashdown, Arkansas, formerly of Big Fork, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010 in Ashdown.
She was born April 1, 1933 in Big Fork, Arkansas to the late Claude Dennis Lewis and the late Lena Elizabeth Josephine Caudle Lewis.
She was a beloved resident of the Little River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and also of Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab in Mena.
Jolene never “walked” or “talked” on this earth, but now she is running, leaping and singing with her heavenly father.
She leaves behind many friends and loved ones from the Ashdown and Mena area.
She is survived by:

She was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Lena Lewis, and a brother, Dennis Eugene Lewis.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 2:00 p. m. at the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mena with Brother Donnie Jewell and Brother Buddy Bean officiating. Interment follows in Pleasant Grove Cemetery
at Big Fork under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be general.
