Thel Head, age 75, of Mena, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011 in Mena.
He was born on August 30, 1935 in Mena, Arkansas to the late Albert Head and Thelma Harvey Head. He was united in marriage to Alma Head. Thel worked in the feed mill business and was a sexton for Pinecrest Cemetery
in Mena. He was a loving husband, step-father, step-grandfather, cousin and a friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by:

Step-daughters: Maxine Cole of Mena, Arkansas Gwen Underwood of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Four step-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Thelma Head.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, January 25, 2011, 3:00 p. m. in the Pinecrest Memorial Park with Brother David McCord officiating under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

Elinor Brainerd
(June 26, 1912 - January 18, 2011)
Elinor Brainerd, in the 99th year of her life, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, from Rich Mt. Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Mena, Arkansas.
She was born in Rusk County, Wisconsin on June 26, 1912, to Evangeline Todd Stone and Herbert P. Stone. After attending Normal School, Elinor taught school in a primitive one room school house in Northern Wisconsin. She married Harry Brainerd in June of 1935. They lived near Bruce in Rusk County Wisconsin where they had a dairy farm and raised their family. Elinor was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother aunt and faithful friend.
She moved to Mena in 1980. Elinor was a member of the First Christian Church of Mena.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 brother, Herbert Stone, son Wendell Brainerd and lifelong friend Gladys Compton.
Survivors include on daughter, Carolyn (Curt) Roesler of Crystal, MN; two sons Philip (Mary Lou) and David (Janice) Brainerd of Mena; daughter-in-law Linda Brainerd, Lopez Island, WA; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration is being planned for mid summer at the Island Lake Church of Christ near Bruce, Wisconsin.
Local arrangements are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Nellie Lucille Crane
(October 19, 1932 - January 17, 2011)
Nellie Lucille Crane, age 78, of Hatfield, Arkansas died Monday evening, January 17, 2011 at Rich Mountain Nursing Home in Mena.
She was born October 19, 1932 to Roy and Thelma (Greer) Tripp in Haskell County, Oklahoma. On July 22, 1950, she married Doyle Crane of Hatfield, Arkansas.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, two daughters, three sons, sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, a sister and a brother, a few cousins and many friends.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, one daughter, and one sister.
Nellie was a pastor’s wife from 1954 until 1992. She taught every age group in Sunday school but her specialty was the children. She prepared many meals for missionaries and evangelists and other special speakers, because in their day the guest speakers would stay in the parsonage. Nellie was saved in July of 1950, just two weeks before she married. She received the baptism in the Holy Spirit in March of 1951 at the Mena Assembly of God in the old rock church down by the highway. She was a devoted member of the Assemblies of God denomination the rest of her life.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 10:00 a. m. at the Mena First Assembly of God with Pastor Ron Tilley, Brother Billy Myers, and Brother Howard Thompson officiating. Interment follows in Pleasant Hill Cemetery
at Hatfield under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
A visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday evening, January 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Mike Oglesby, Randy Oglesby, Steve Oglesby, Ronnie Crane, Jon Mosley and Tim Mosley.
Dorothy Elizabeth Brady
(August 17, 1927 - January 17, 2011)
Dorothy Elizabeth Brady, age 83 of Mena died Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab in Mena. She was born on Wednesday, August 17, 1927 to Charles Daun and Martha Oddette Clark Calhoun in Colfax, Louisiana.
Family was very important to Dorothy and loved to spent time with her children and grandchildren. They were her most prized possession. Dorothy loved to cook and a couple of her specialties were Coconut Cake and Banana Pudding. She also loved to read and would get lost in a book and escape from all life’s troubles. She also loved poetry and published and small booklet of poetry. This was one of Dorothy’s greatest achievements and a proud moment in her life. In her later years she and her girlfriends would go every weekend and go dancing. She loved to dance to country music. She worked most of her life in the grocery business but enjoyed working in the Meat Department the best.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald Brady and four brother, C. D., Hugh, Omar, and Wilbur Calhoun.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Brady of Shreveport, Louisiana and Abigail Lockey of Mena; one brother, Willis Calhoun of Zephyrhills, Florida; two sisters, Natalie Ricketts of Minden, Louisiana and Evelyn Powers of Knoxville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, James Morgan of Benton, Louisiana, DeAnna Cooper of Bossier City, Louisiana, Mindy Canady of Haughton, Louisiana, Tawnya Woodson Kistler of Phoenix, Arizona, and Tina Woodson Rattler of Dessert Hill, Arizona; five great grandchildren, Bridgette Butts of Shreveport, Louisiana, Megan Morgan of Coushatta, Louisiana, Sylvia Georgia, Miranda Georgia and Taylor Canady all of Haughton, Louisiana; one great-great-grandson, Jameson Butts of Shreveport, Louisiana; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
There are no services scheduled at this time, with cremation services entrusted to Hall Funeral Service in Mena.
William "Jesse" Fowler
(May 24, 1911 - January 15, 2011)
William “Jesse “Fowler, age 99, of Mena, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Jesse was born May 24, 1911 in Oil City, Louisiana to the late William Thomas Fowler and late Ada Bell Orand Fowler. Jesse was married to Faye Fowler. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He worked as a refinery worker for Exxon Oil Company and was a ship builder in World War ll. He was a loving husband, uncle and a friend to all who knew him.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 2:00 p. m. at First Baptist Church in Mena, Arkansas with Brother David McCord officiating. Interment will be in the Gillham cemetery in Gillham, Arkansas under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
Family and friends visitation will be Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 5:00-7:00 p. m. at Beasley-Wood Chapel.

Inez Marie Bowen
(November 22, 1917 - January 15, 2011)
Inez Marie Hoover Bowen, 93 died Saturday morning, January 15, 2011 at the Mena Regional Health System.
Inez was born in the Highland community on November 22, 1917, the daughter of Hiram Stanley Hoover and his wife Mattie Lou Deramus Hoover. On March 30, 1935, she was united in marriage to Charles Clayton Bowen. Their marriage lasted 67 years until his death in 2002. They had two sons, Charles Audren and James Milford, and a daughter, Charlotte Marie. Inez was Charles’ helpmate during his ministry in various Baptist churches in Arkansas and in California. They also lived for several years in Minden, LA. In 1968 Charles and Inez returned to Polk County and lived in the Ink community. She was very talented as a seamstress, piecing quilts, and crocheting. In addition to the many outfits she made for her grandchildren, most of her family enjoyed handcrafted items she made as gifts for them.
Inez was a member of First Baptist Church, Mena, and was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, one sister Phenie Hoover Johnson, four brothers Fletcher, Nelson, Glen and Stanley Hoover, and a half brother Austin Hoover.
Survivors include sons Charles Audren Bowen and his wife Pat of Little Rock, James Milford Bowen and his wife Annette of Webster, TX; grandchildren: Charles Audren Bowen, Jr. (Debbie), Elizabeth Jackson, Rhonda Lee (Terry), Jeremy Bowen (Lisa), Rebecca Bowen, and Daniel Bowen (Staci); great-grandchildren: JulieAnne, Paul, Amy, Jennifer and Kit Bowen; Ross Jackson (Amanda); Garrett, Nathan and Andrew Lee; Anderson Bowen; Kaitlyn and Molly Descant; great-great granddaughter Ainslee Jackson and great-great grandson Jonathan Jackson; special neighbors Wendy, Billy, Prairie and Rodie Strother, many nieces and nephews and a host of good friends; and especially the ladies who played Canasta with her every Thursday at her house, LaRita Chitwood, Jesse and Fran Cogburn, Very Cary and Kaylon Scroggins. They were very special friends who meant a lot to her.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 20, 2011at 10:00 A. M. at the First Baptist Church in Mena with Dr. David McCord officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery
under the direction of Hall Funeral Service in Mena. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 19, 2011from 5-8 P. M. at the Hall Funeral Service Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Gary Floyd, Don Hall, Jim Lesley, Max Jones, Ray Clift and Wayne McDaniel.

Mary Elizabeth Evans
(November 23, 1938 - January 9, 2011)
Mary E. Evans, age 72 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Sunday, January 9, 2011 at her home. She was born November 23, 1938 in Dublin, Ireland to the late Joseph and Ester Larkin. She was united in marriage to the late Carl D. Evans of Mena in London, England in 1959 until her passing. She was a Christian and a member of the Catholic faith and attended Saint Agnes Catholic church in Mena. She was a homemaker and had several part time jobs outside the home. She was a member of the Altar Society and enjoyed working the yearly bizarre and having fellowship with all her friends. She was also a member of the Red Hat Hotties. Her courageous battle with cancer was an inspiration to all as she kept a positive attitude till the end. Her outgoing bubbly Irish personality will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have known her.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She is survived by four children, a son, Orphus P. Evans and wife Patricia of Glenview, Illinois; daughter, Deanne Friend of Mena, Arkansas; daughter Shannon Pearce and husband Ronnie Pearce of Mena, Arkansas; daughter Lydia McCourtney and husband Don McCourtney of Mena, Arkansas. Seven grandchildren, Joel Ashcraft of Mena, Megan Ashcraft of Conway, Arkansas, Rebecca Ryan of Mena, Lauren Cobb of Monroe, Louisiana, Carolyn Cobb of Mena, Leslie McCourtney of Mena and Chrisopher McCourtney of Mena. Two great-grandchildren, Addison and Evan Ashcraft of Mount Ida, Arkansas.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 12 from 6 to 8 p. m. with Rosary at 7:00 p. m. at the Beasley Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 13, at 10:00 a. m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church with interment following at Concord Cemetery
in Ink, Arkansas under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Helen Louise Masters
(April 3, 1923 - January 8, 2011)
Helen Louise Masters, 87, of Mena, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Saturday, January 8, 2011, at her home. She was born April 3, 1923, to Velle Poole Wagoner and Clara Belle Brumley Wagoner in Nunley, Arkansas.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, T. C. Masters; her children, Jerry Masters and wife Karen of Little Rock, Barbara Shepard and husband Mike of Mena, Betty Gilbert and husband Martin of Fayetteville, Tim Masters and wife Lisa of Paris, Texas; daughter-in-law Martha Masters of Mena; brother James Poole Wagoner of Anza, California; sister Ruth Campbell of Mena; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, son David Masters, granddaughter Alyson Masters, and sisters Mildred Shearin and Ruby Lou McCoy.
Helen’s greatest joy was to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She would call them almost every day just to say hello. Other than being with family, Helen was never happier than when she was in the outdoors. She and T. C. enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling in their RV. They especially loved the many years they spent at Lake Ouachita and Gillham Lake. Helen enjoyed western swing and big band music. She was a member of the Bright and Early Home Demonstration Club.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at 2:00 P. M. at the First Baptist Church in Mena, with Dr. David McCord officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with Hall Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends until Monday, January 10, 2011, at the family home.
Pallbearers will be her ten grandsons, Jeff Eddleman, Travis Eddleman, Scott Masters, Brent Masters, Jason Masters, Marty Gilbert, Patrick Gilbert, Troy Gilbert, Alex Masters and Neal Del Rio.
Raymond Darrell Phillips
(July 10, 1925 - January 8, 2011)
Mr. Raymond Darrell Phillips, age 85, of Smithville, Oklahoma, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011 in McAlester, Oklahoma.
He was born July 10, 1925 in Smithville, Oklahoma to the late Edgar Phillips and the late Florence Herron Phillips. He was united in marriage to Opal Parnell. He was a heavy equipment operator by profession and was a member of the Indian Baptist Church at Smithville. He was a loving father grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p. m. at the Indian Baptist Church at Smithville with Pastor Raymond Johnson officiating. Interment follows in Smithville Cemetery
under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation at the funeral home will be general. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday, January 14, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p. m. at Hidden Valley Retreat Cabins on River Front Resort Road at Smithville.
