Sharon Kay Strom Hasley Sharon Kay Strom Hasley of Sheridan, Ark., was born Nov. 26, 1954, at Wichita, Kan., the daughter of Rosie Jones Strom and the late Vernon Cecil Strom. Mrs. Hasley died Feb. 6, 2008, at her home at the age of 53. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and owned Sharon’s Paints. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother: Cecil Ray Strom. Survivors include her husband: Rick Hasley of Sheridan; sons: Elijah Gene Funderburg, II "Dunner" and wife, DeeAnna of Sheridan; Darren Dean "DD" Funderburg of Sheridan; Bobby Joe and wife, Casey Hasley of Jefferson, Aaron Hasley of Pine Bluff and Danny Joe Hasley of Pine Bluff; daughter: Shannon Hoover of Pine Bluff; mother: Rosie Jones Strom of Sheridan; brothers: Donald Gene, Michael, Robert, and Havis Strom, all of Sheridan; sisters: Deborah Wilkerson and Georgia McCool, both of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren: Serina, Erica, Stephanie, Emily, Courtney, Devin, Brenden, Nayda, Hope, Faith, Star, and Saige. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Sheridan with Bro. Scotty Thomas and Pastor Dick Ware officiating. Burial followed at Center Campground Cemetery near Prague. Pallbearers were Dunner Funderburg, Darren Funderburg, Bobby Joe Hasley, Aaron Hasley, Danny Joe Hasley and Chris Strom. Shirley Jean Falls Gay Shirley Jean Falls Gay, 64, of Pine Bluff, Ark., died, Feb. 7, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. She was born Jan. 6, 1944, in Pine Bluff to James Monroe and Annice Wright Falls. She was reared and received her education in Sheridan, graduating from Grapevine High School. Mrs. Gay was a homemaker and a Baptist. She enjoyed fishing, reading, sewing, needlepoint, craftwork and spending time with her children. Mrs. Gay was blessed with two sets of twins. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother: James Monroe Falls, Jr.; and a sister: Deana Mills. Survivors include her husband: Arnold L. Gay, whom she married on Dec. 16, 1989, in Pine Bluff; two sons: James McGann of Sheridan, Mark McGann of Pine Bluff; four daughters: Martha McGann of Pine Bluff, Sharron Wells of Sheridan, Karron Buie of Prattsville, Linda Falls of Conway; two brothers: Talbot Falls of White Hall, James Falls of Pine Bluff; two sisters: Gail Hoskinson and Marie Keys, both of Enid, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren. Lottie Mae McBryde Valentine Lottie Mae McBryde Valentine of Sheridan, Ark., was born June 23, 1916, at Palmyra, the daughter of the late Willie Porter and Jennie Bell Melton McBryde. Mrs. Valentine died Feb. 7, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center Hospice in Pine Bluff at the age of 91. She was a member of Lost Creek Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed flower gardening and had a special gift for cooking. For many years, she babysat children in her home and became "Granny" Valentine to each of them. What "Granny" Valentine loved most was spending time with her family and creating memories that they will treasure forever. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years: Troy D. Valentine; son: Billy D. Valentine; great-granddaughter: Gabrielle Valentine; great-grandson: Haydn Rathe Valentine; brothers: Powell McBryde and Leon McBryde; and sisters: Lorene Ashcraft and Pearl Posey. Survivors include her son: Wayne Valentine of Sheridan; daughters: Anita Mitchell and husband, Bill of Sherill, Trella Burnett of Sheridan, Carolyn Berry and husband, Mac of Bentonville, Brenda Stuckey and husband, Tim of Sheridan; sister: Betty Jo Carrington of Oregon; 20 grandchildren: Janice (Randy) Lynch, Brad Valentine, Lance Valentine, Pam (Rusty) Johnson, Penny (Perry) Lloyd, Mitch (Julie) Mitchell, David (Rochelle) Burnett, Jr., Sheila (Roger) Taylor, Troy (Cheryl) Burnett, Cindy Creech, Troy Wayne (Ann) Johnson, Wayne Valentine, Jr., Keith (Kate) Valentine, Michelle Valentine, Chris (Pennie) Berry, Heather Sanguin, Angela Berry, Jeremy (Amy) Stuckey, Tad Crowe, Jennifer Crowe; 39 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Bro. Roger Taylor and Rusty Johnson officiating. Burial was at Lost Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Charles Vernon Pearce Charles Vernon Pearce, 86, died Jan. 12, 2008. He was born April 24, 1921, the son of Paul V. and Gertrude C. Pearce. He proudly served in the military for five years with the Arkansas National Guard 153rd Infantry band and served in the U.S. Army overseas during World War II. He was also stationed at Fort Raymond in Seward, Alaska, and worked in defense command in the 206th Adjutant General Department, having received an honorable discharge in 1945. He worked for the Arkansas Gazette and Campbell Soup Co., earning several awards. He retired in 1975 from Honeywell Allied Signal Chemical Corp. as a chemical analyst with 19 years of service. He and his wife owned and operated Aloe Vera Products by Avacare Inc. for 23 years, serving the Baton Rouge, La., area and shipping nationwide. He was a totally devoted husband and self-sacrificing father, as well as a special friend to many in need. His ability to make others laugh made him unique. He was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years: Dorothy M. Pearce; brothers: the Rev. Claude Pearce of Texas, Harold A. Pearce and Howard "Roy" Pearce, both of Arkansas. He is survived by his daughters: Shelia Byrns and husband, John, and Darlene Runfalo and husband, Sal; six grandchildren: Michael Byrns, Kevin Byrns, Kellie Alford, Michele Morgan, Cherie Chenevert and Anthony "Tony" Runfalo; 14 great-grandchildren: and two great-great-granddaughters of who he was very proud. He is also survived by a sister: Mrs. K.O. (Zulla) Sites of Sheridan, and Mrs. Leonard (Polly) Mano of Little Rock; and numerous nieces and nephews. Religious ceremony was held at 10 a.m. Jan. 16 at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, La. with Teryl Hebert officiating. Interment was in Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge, La. Elva Lee Posey Packer Elva Lee Posey Packer was lovingly known to her many friends as ‘Posey’ and to her grandchildren as Granny Posey. The name she took great pride in was being known as mother and as the wife of the late Cliff Packer. She loved life as strongly as she loved her husband and children, Trena, Drew and Glynda. A Benton, Ark., area resident six decades, Posey Packer died June 3, 2008, at the age of 86 with a lifetime of memories filled with Church, family, politics, travel, dogs, horses and Arkansas’ legendary Cliff Packer Auto Ranch. A true steel magnolia with a clever wit, until her recent serious illness, she often voiced a quick laugh and a twinkle in her brown eyes. A breast cancer survivor, she was diagnosed with bone marrow carcinoma in February of 2008. Born in Carroll, La., in the Red River Parrish near Coushatta La., she met and married Cliff Packer while working in the ticket office of a theatre in Longview, Texas, around 1942. While he served in the U.S. Army for five years, she worked alongside her parents, the late Clarence and Daisy Posey, in the East Texas Ammunitions Plant doing their part for World War II. In the early 1950’s, the young couple moved to Arkansas, which proved to be their land of opportunity. They set up several entrepreneurial businesses near Little Rock and Benton, including Cliff Packer Auto Ranch, Trailer Sales, Service Station and Restaurant. A visionary about the importance of the land at the Pulaski/Saline County lines, the Packers were among the first to purchase land and build a business in the area. With a love of history and tradition coming from her Louisiana roots, they bought and renovated an 1890’s era home they lovingly called the ’Stagecoach House’ on old Hwy 5. Much of the land they owned is now the major interstate connecting Little Rock and Benton. They also established and managed KKDI-FM radio station in Sheridan for several years. While she admitted to riding a horse “only a couple of times.’ she was a renowned ‘ground level’ expert who helped her husband and kids with horsemanship and training tips. The Packer family traveled throughout the U.S. and were known for their excellent riding ability. They enjoyed an extended family of friends acquired through involvement with the Civitan Club, Saline County Fair, saddle clubs, cutting horse associations and the Arkansas State Fair. Mrs. Posey as she was known at the Arkansas State Fair was a founding member of the Arkansas State Cutting Horse and Quarter Horse Associations. She was a founding member and chaired the Arkansas State Fair Rodeo Queen Pageant for 25 years. Until her illness, she was active with the State Fair Board of Directors and the Arkansas Republican Party. She was an integral part of the Arkansas State Republican Party and Saline County Republicans for more than 25 years. Together the Packers chaired numerous committees and were avid fundraisers for the GOP. Additionally, they were National Convention delegates and attended inaugurations for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. It was not uncommon to pass by the Packers home en route to Hot Springs and view a huge banner endorsing Arkansas Republican candidates from Congressmen to Governor. The many contacts she made through business, horseback riding and politics, often were drop-in guests. She was a fine Southern lady who enjoyed playing impromptu hostess to these well-known guests and learned fast how to stretch a meal. “It was not unusual for Daddy to call and say he was bringing someone for dinner and 10 minutes later Ken ‘Festus’ Curtis, Roy Rogers & Dale, or Glen Campbell, or even Jerry Lee Lewis or Tanya Tucker would walk in,” she recalled recently. Other times it might be the Governor, a Senator or Win Paul Rockefeller. A master of landscape architecture, she had no formal training but learned by “digging, planting and watching”. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, growing muscadines and flowers and shrubs. Her thumb was equally green in cultivating African violets, Easter lilies, orchids, and her favorite pinkish-peach tipped roses. She could root anything into a beautiful flower or shrub. A favorite past time, when she wasn’t watching her ‘story’ General Hospital or game shows where she could answer most any question, was listening to music CD’s. She loved the close harmony quartets like the Gaither vocal band and the Gatlin Brothers as well as patriotic melodies and hits by Patsy Cline and Michael Buble’. She loved her Church family as she did her own and was an active member, and even had a designated pew complete with a pillow to cushion her back, at the Highway Church of Christ in Benton. She served with the Church visitation committee, Vacation Bible School and as a teacher. Previously she was a part of the congregations at Northside Church of Christ and Mabelvale Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband Cliff Packer; and one daughter: Glynda Packer Isaacs. Survivors are Trena Packer Street (R.W.) of Collierville Tenn.; Clifford Andrew Packer (Teresa) of Kilgore, Texas; granddaughter: Andrea Packer of Sheridan; grandsons: Lt. Dustin Packer, stationed at Meridian (Miss.) Naval Station; and Kristofer Isaacs of Conway. She is also survived by nephew: Kenny Wayne Packer (Lou); and niece: Sherry Halbert (John); cousin: Leroy Jones (Naomi) of Damascus; two step-granddaughters: Kathy (Jeff) Bousson of Collierville, Tenn.; Linda (Marc) Greenwood of Pilot Point, Texas and seven step-great-grandchildren: Amanda Bousson Cantrell (Luke), Megan, Blake and Jake Bousson; Matthew, Lucas and Will Greenwood and other Posey family relatives in her home state of Louisiana. Breazeal Tommy R. Breazeal of Sheridan, Ark., was born April 13, 1940, in Sheridan, the son of the late Bernie Cecil and Rosa Bell Jackson Breazeal. Mr. Breazeal died June 4, 2008, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock at the age of 68. He was a life member of Marlow Missionary Baptist Church, and had retired from Wonder Bread after 37 years of service. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master in Gavel Lodge # 532 and Past Worthy Patron of Faith Chapter 223 Order of Eastern Star. He had been a Justice of the Peace for many years as well as a past member of Grant County Quorum Court, a past member of the Grant County Fair Board for many years, a member and past president of the Corinth Cemetery Association, was on the Little Creek Water Board and was a founding and lifetime member of Kelt Creek Hunting Club. Survivors include his wife of 46 years: Penn A. Lipscomb Breazeal of Sheridan; sons: Tommy R. Breazeal, Jr of Sheridan, Todd R. Breazeal and wife, Candice L. of Sheridan; brother: Millard Filmore Breazeal and wife, Bobbie of El Dorado; sisters: Cecile Lewis of Sheridan, Billie C. Breazeal of Sheridan; grandsons: Adam Breazeal and Aaron Breazeal; and a host of nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Jones Scribner Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Jones Scribner of Little Rock, Ark., was born on Oct. 19, 1940, and she died on June 7, 2008, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock at the age of 67 years. She was a Claims Supervisor for Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield and was a member of East Union Missionary Baptist Church at East End. She was preceded in death by a brother: Bobbie Jones. Survivors are her husband, Donald Scribner of the home; son: Leon "Lenny" Franklin Yates, Jr. of Little Rock; three daughters: Cindy Yates of Little Rock, Missy Kellebrew of Sheridan, Kristy Mullins of Little Rock; brother: Jimmy Jones of Little Rock; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on June 10 at East Union Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Roberts and the Rev. Johnie Brewster officiating. Lites of Grapevine, Ark., was born June 2, 1925, at Grapevine, the son of the late Clara Plunkett and Roy James Lites. Mr. Lites died June 6, 2008, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Little Rock at the age of 83. He was a member of Ain Missionary Baptist Church for 70 years where he spent 25 years as Sunday School Superintendent. He was a Mason and belonged to Taylor lodge at Grapevine. J.B. was formerly in the United States Army, during which time he served in the Phillipines. He was also retired from the Southern Pacific/Cotton Belt Railroad, was a past board member with Grant County Farm Bureau, past board member of F.S.A., was a former member of Grant County Cattleman’s Association and had a special interest in growing and maintaining his timber. Second only to his relationship with Jesus Christ, was his great love for his family, all of whom were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Noel and Othel Lites. Survivors include his wife and best friend: Virginia Reynolds Lites of Grapevine. They were married 61 years ago on Jan. 21, 1947. He is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law: Ben and Mary Jo Lites of Sulphur Springs; daughter and son-in-law: Renee and Gary Don Hix of Sheridan; sister: Jeroline Lites Blackerby of Grapevine; granddaughters: Jodie and husband, Mike Young of Conway, Dee Ann and husband, Ben Huffman of Conway, Lacey and husband, Mitch Logan of Grapevine; great-grandchildren: Will Young, Kate Young, Olivia Huffman, Emily Huffman; numerous other family members; and a large number of friends. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. June 9 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Bro. David Hiblong, Bro. William Ashcraft, Bro. O.J. Ramick, Bro. Nathan Winiecki and Bro. GLADYS MARTHA BATES Gladys Martha Bates, 91, of Bauxite, a homemaker, died Sunday, Feb. 25. She was a member of Reynolds Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Bates. Surviving are two sons, Harvey Bates of St. Paul, Minn and Roberts Bates of Sardis; a daughter Sammie Goodwin of Sheridan; a brother, James G. Waddle of Sherwood; a sister, Florabell Hassell of Little Rock; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral was Wednesday at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Beatty officiating. Burial was at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were David Hawley, Bill Hawley, Robert Bates, Jr., Keith Bates, Chris Goodwin and Jeff Bates.
