Johnnie Sue Rogers
Johnnie Sue Rogers, 64, of Hiwasse, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at the Gravette Medical Center Hospital.
She was born April 6, 1938, in Hiwasse, daughter of Preston David Banks and Vera Lynn Brown Banks.
She was a lifelong resident of the Hiwasse area.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Arkansas.
On June 9, 1962, in Bentonville, she married Robert T. (Tony) Rogers, who survives her.
She is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Amy Rogers of Holiday Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ray Hensley of Springfield, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Adam Hensley and Alec Hensley, both of Springfield, Mo.
Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 21, at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery
west of Hiwasse, with the Rev. Houston Meyers officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Callison-Lough Funeral Service of Gravette.
Rosemary Hurley
Rosemary Hurley, 81, of Alpena, died Saturday, Dec. 14, at her home.
She was born April 5, 1921, in Alpena, the only child of Heber Tate and Beulah Plott Tate.
When she was 9 years old, she and her parents moved into their newly built home, two houses away from where she was born.
She spent the rest of her life calling that house her home.
Her love of gardening shone in the large yard she maintained.
She provided counsel and inspiration to many young people around Alpena.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Hurley; her parents, Heber and Beulah Tate; and a great-grandchild, Madeleine Baer of Decatur, Ala.
She is survived by five children, Mary Keith (Keesie) Mitchell of Bonita Springs, Fla., John Tate Hurley of Clermont, Fla., Margaret Ann Hurley of the home, Cathy Lynn Oates of Fayetteville, and Terry Elwin Hurley of North Little Rock; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hurley spent her life as a full-time mother and grandmother.
Her jobs outside the home started when she worked at the old canning factory in Alpena, helping to can tomatoes.
She ran the "washhouse," the first and, for many years, only laundry in Alpena.
She also worked as a long-distance telephone operator in Harrison for Tri-County Telephone Co.
She was a cattle farmer, along with her father and her husband, and she continued this occupation after their deaths.
One of her farms has been in continuous operation as a beef farm since around 1900, since it originally belonged to her grandfather, George Washington Tate.
A passionate Democrat, she worked most of her life in support of the Democratic Party, serving to a state level several times. An avid supporter of Alpena, she served several years on the city council.
She served as the secretary of the Alpena Cemetery
Association for 28 years, a position she took over after the death of her husband, Keith, who served as postmaster at Alpena for 28 years. Her love of maintaining the cemetery is the reason her children ask that if anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in her honor, please send it to the Alpena Cemetery

Harold Dudley Pharis
Harold Dudley Pharis, 80, of Grandview, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Berryville.
He was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Berryville, son of James Irving and Lillie Lee (Rowlett) Pharis.
Mr. Pharis was a veteran, having served his country along with five of his brothers during World War II. As a Private First Class with the 316th QM Bakery Company, U.S. Army, her served in New Guinea, Australia, and in the Philippines. He retired from the Corps of Engineers after 20 years of service. During his career with the Corps, Harold helped complete numerous concrete construction projects on Beaver Lake.
On Dec. 24, 1959, he married Faye (Aery) Pharis, who survives him.
He is also survived by his brothers, Everett, Bill, Herbert, and Ed, all of Berryville; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Russell, Kenneth and Vernon; and two sisters, Jewell and Clara Mae.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Charles M. Nelson Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Billy McCall and the Rev. Wayne McCollough officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
Olnia William Yingst
Olnia William Yingst, 86, of Buhl, Idaho, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho.
He was born Sept. 27, 1916, at Truth, Ark., son of Logan A. and Flora Yingst.
Mr. Yingst attended school in Kingston.
At the age of 18, he started work for the Union Pacific Railroad and headed west.
He returned to Arkansas and married his hometown sweetheart, Imogene Allred, on Oct. 9, 1937.
They were married for 65 years.
In 1941, they moved to the Buhl - Castleford area.
Mr. Yingst served in the U.S. Army during World War II, 1945-46.
He returned to Buhl and worked at Shields for 14 years.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980 after 20 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Yingst of Buhl; three children, Nadine Yingst of Boise, Shirley Somerville and husband Dallas of St. Helens, Ore., and Max Yingst and wife Jan of Twin Falls; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Freeman Yingst of Buhl, and Clarence Yingst of Twin Falls; and a sister, Irene McRoberts of Buhl.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Church of the Nazarene in Buhl.
Interment followed at the West End Cemetery, Buhl.
Memorial donations may be made to the Buhl Church of the Nazarene.
Kenneth G. Gay
KENNETH G. GAY, a resident of Berryville, was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Rochester, Mich., a son of Frank and Gladys Gay.
He died Saturday, March 11, 2006, in Fayetteville, at the age of 77.
Kenneth was a master rock mason. He was a veteran, serving with the United States Army.
He is survived by two sons, Jeff and his wife, Carrie Gay of Eureka Springs, and Glen Gay of Little Rock; one brother, Bernard Gay of Eureka Springs; one sister, Barbara Thorpe of Michigan; four grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gladys Gay; and one brother, Gerald Gay.
Cremation arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kenneth G. Gay Memorial Fund at Community First Bank.
Joe and Elizabeth Gaines
Joe A. and Elizabeth Gaines were killed in an auto accident Sunday, March 22, 2009, while returning from a visit with their daughter’s family. Joe and Elizabeth were married 59 years and had four children and seven grandchildren.
Joe A Gaines Sr., was born June 26, 1924 in Sugar Land, Texas, to Carl Lewis Gaines Sr., and Wilbert Viola Wooderson.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl Lewis Gaines Jr., of Dallas and T.L. Gaines of Houston; three sisters, Evelyn Pepper of Huntsville, Texas, Ruth Altman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dorothy Cottongin of Lake Jackson, Texas.
Joe was a fourth-generation Texan whose family settled in Texas in 1836 around the San Augustine and Huntsville areas.
Joe was a Marine Corps veteran and served his country in the South Pacific during World War 11.
Elizabeth Jean Gaines was born Sept. 29, 1925 in Atlanta, Ark.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Walker C. Jean and Lena McKamie of Atlanta; brother, Clarence Lee Jean Sr. of Magnolia; and sister, Francille Walker of Colorado Springs, Colo. Elizabeth was a fourth-generation Arkansan whose family settled in the Atlanta area in the early 1850s.
Joe and Elizabeth are survived by their four children, J. Allen Gaines Jr. of Lubbock, David W. Gaines of Golden, Colo., J. Brandon Gaines of Houston, and Emily G. Sherwood of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren, Audrey Gaines of Fort Worth, Jonathon Gaines and Megan Gaines of Lubbock, Brittany Gaines of Houston, D. Walker Gaines Jr. of College Station, Owen Sherwood and Shannon Sherwood of Las Vegas, Nev., Joe’s sister, Helen Brown of Sugar Land, and brother Jerry Gaines of Diboll, Texas; Elizabeth’s brother, J. L. Jean of (Atlanta, Ark., as well as many nieces and nephews in Texas, Arkansas and Colorado.
Joe, a graduate of Huntsville High School and Elizabeth, a graduate of Magnolia (Ark.) High School met while they were students at SMU in Dallas. After their marriage they lived in Lubbock and Dallas before settling in Shreveport in 1957 for 34 years.
They recently relocated from Las Vegas to Lubbock.
Joe and Elizabeth were a loving couple, devoted parents and grandparents.
Family was the most important facet of their lives.
They sacrificed much and always put their children’s needs first, provided loving support, comfort, nurturing and direction to their children and grandchildren. They were fine examples for their descendants on how to develop a loving and caring family.
These are the precious gifts that will not be lost with their passing.
Our family will miss their kind, gentle nature and their smiling faces but will treasure the lessons that they taught us, the opportunities that they gave us, the love that they shared with us, and the rich and wonderful memories they created for us.
Funeral services for Joe and Elizabeth will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009 at St. Stevens Episcopal Church of Huntsville with Father Jim Morgan officiating. Interment will follow at Petree Cemetery
in Huntsville.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Huntsville Funeral Home.

Ellamae Conley, 85, of Stuttgart died Saturday, April 14, 2001.
She was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Gypsum, Okla.
She was a retired nurses aide at Stuttgart Regional Medical Center and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors are two sons, Freddie Mills of Pine Bluff and David L. Conley of Linden, Texas; two daughters, Ella Jeane Pullman of Stuttgart and Jewell Teal of Benton; one brother, Arthur Jones of Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Edith Cook of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Guy Looper and the Rev. Randal Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Tree Cemetery

Emily Carter Baker
WARREN, Ark. - Emily Carter Baker, 96, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Trinity Village in Pine Bluff.
She was born Feb. 19, 1905, in the Bradley County community of Emmaus.
She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and for the past 13 years a member of Second Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. She was a graduate of Arkansas A & M College. She taught for 49 years at Center Point School, the Warren Public School System and the Bakersville, Ind., Public School System.
She married D.C. Baker on July 10, 1956, at Warren and he died July 9, 1975.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Orlan Carter Sr., Leonard Carter, Edward Carter, Oliver Carter and Victor Carter; and three sisters, Bertie Lee Little, Mary Belle Murray and Jewel Elliff.
Survivors are two brothers, L. Clyde Carter of Stuttgart and Marvin Carter of Springdale; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Frazer's Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dr. James Edward Carter and the Rev. Dr. Tom Elliff. Burial will follow in Moseley Cemetery
by Frazer's Funeral Home of Warren.
Visitation was from 6 - 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Louis Bunyard Sr.
ENGLAND -- Louis Bunyard Sr., 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
He is survived by his loving wife Melba as well as two sisters; Rachel Holtz and Lee Collins.
He is also survived by two sons Louis Bunyard Jr. and Troy Bunyard and one daughter Lu Gregory.
There are 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Roller-England Funeral Home and funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at 2 p.m. Roller-England Funeral Home.
Maudie Lee Pennington Norman
Maudie Lee Pennington Norman, 86, of Stuttgart died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home.
She was a homemaker, the widow of Clarence "Pete" Norman, and a member of First United Methodist Church in Stuttgart.
She is survived by two sons, Bobby Norman (Gail) and Billy Norman (Elsie) both of Stuttgart; two daughters, Frances Uhiren (Tommy) of Hazen and Peggy Perkins (Hugh) of Little Rock; five grandchildren, Karen Heslep (Mike), Todd Norman (Donna), Kim Hoffman (Steve), Kerri Morris (Freddie) and Terry Perkins; three great-grandchildren, Sydney and Savannah Heslep and Kristen Morris.
Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Stuttgart by the Rev. George Williams. Interment followed in the Lone Tree Cemetery
by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Pallbearers were Todd Norman, Terry Perkins, Ronald Surratt, Mike Heslep, Jerry Fischer, Freddie Morris, Steve Hoffman and Ray Gibson.
