Carrol Haywood

Carrol Haywood, 72, of Senath died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at his residence.

Born Dec. 14, 1931, in Holcomb, son of the late Herschel and Nora Miles Haywood, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was employed as a supervisor at Emerson Electric Company.

On May 2, 1975, he married Mary Beth Harris, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include three sons, Greg Haywood of Kennett, Kenny Holmes of Senath and Jason Holmes of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one brother, Perry Allen Haywood of Cedar Hill, Texas; four sisters, Madge Goans of Pontiac, Mich., Shirley Bader of Hillsboro, Mo., Linda Beckwith of Arnold, Mo., and Vickie Allen of Campbell; and five grandchildren, Gregory and Courtney Haywood and Stephanie, Natalie and Benjamin Holmes.

He was preceded in death by one son, Carrol Lynn Haywood; one brother, Jack Haywood and one grandson, Joshua Blake Haywood.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett with the Rev. Lavone Smart officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers were Al Purvis, Larry Masterson, Danny Ford, Barry Palmer, David Harris and Harold Edwards.

Lynn Wilson

Lynn Wilson, 53, of Pollard, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

He was born Dec. 25, 1950, in Poplar Bluff, the son of Sydney Lomax Wilson and the late Lyman Theodore Wilson.

He married Sharon Umfleet on Sept. 18, 1993.

He was a Field Representative for Watermelon Brokerage and a member of the New Hope General Baptist Church in Holcomb.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lyman, and one brother, Donald Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Wilson of Pollard; his mother, Sydney Lomax Wilson of Holcomb; two daughters, Stephanie Estes and husband, Wade, and Sarah Jo Morgan and husband, Scotty, all of Holcomb; a son, Christopher Lynn Wilson, of Holcomb; three grandchildren, Kelsey Estes, Wyatt Estes and Elie Morgan; a mother and father-in-law, Herman and Jewell Umfleet, of Advance; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Vickie Umfleet, of Marshfield, Mo.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today), Sept. 1, 2004, in the Landess Funeral Chapel in Campbell with Bro. Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in Stanfield Cemetery in Clarkton.

Landess Funeral Home, Inc., of Campbell is in charge of the arrangements.

Emry Palmer Johnson

Emry Palmer Johnson, 72, of Piggott died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 22, 1932 in Piggott, the son of the late Dellveicho and Anna Eva Johnson.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Johnson; one son, Michael Shayne Johnson; one brother, Doyne "Biscuits" Johnson; and one sister, Eileen Johnson.

He is survived by two sons, Emry Palmer Johnson II of Kennett and Mooring Johnson of Piggott; one daughter, Pamela Fry of Piggott; three grandchildren, Courtney Johnson, Christopher Johnson and Destiney Johnson; one sister, Triply Muse of Piggott; one brother, Sholan Johnson of Copeville, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, in Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Gary Laughlin officiating. Burial was in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Bates, Jimmy Bates, Kenny Wood, Bob Gower, Keith Thrasher, Cleat Stansill, John Wilson and Mike Hinkle.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Catterton

Paul Catterton, 73, of Piggott, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Medical Center in Memphis.

He was born March 26, 1931, in Sumner, Ill., the son of the late Nathan and Pearl Marie Jones Catterton.

He married Melva Ann Vaughn on Sept. 28, 1957. They had three sons.

He received a bachelor of science degree in history from the University of Maryland and masters degrees in social studies, administration - principal, and administration - superintendent from Arkansas State University.

He had twenty years of active duty in the Air Force and retired in 1969 with 20 years of active duty.

Catterton taught junior high social studies for 17 and a half years in the Piggott Schools.

He was a member of the Hitt's Chapel General Baptist Church. He produced the church bulletin and newsletter for several years and filmed and photographed significant events in church life. He enjoyed sending birthday and anniversary greetings.

In the community, Mr. Catterton was an active member of the VFW Post 4517 in Piggott and a life member of Disabled Veterans Association. He was also a member of the Retired Enlisted Association of Paragould and an active member of the AARP.

He was a celebrated Veteran and received several awards for his years of service. In May of 1969, he received the Outstanding Instructor Award from the Air Force; on July 4, 2003, he received the Patriotic Citizen Award from local VFW Post 4517 for daily flag display; and in March of 2004 he received an award for 6,250 hours of outstanding volunteer service to veterans from the VAHS in Memphis. He will be missed by those he served and loved.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Nola Catterton Hunt; one brother, William Catterton; and one sister, Mary Virkey.

He is survived by his wife, Melva Ann Catterton; three sons, Paul Catterton Jr. of Washington, Mo., Nathan Catterton of Richmond, Va., and Sterling Catterton of Marmaduke; two daughters-in-law, Katrina Catterton and Lisa Catterton; three grandchildren, Ben, Kristel and Ashley; five sisters, Audrey Phillips of Claremont, Ill., Sarah Allen and Jean Green, both of Bridgeport, Ill., Clara Mae Byrd of Lawrenceville, Ill., and Evelyn Gowen of Louisville, Ill.; one brother, Charles Catterton of Sumner, Ill.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Rev. Charles Richardson, Rev. Shawn Parker, Rev. Anthony Dowdy and Rev. Paul Catterton Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery with full military service.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

James David Bedwell

James David Bedwell, 74, of Jonesboro died on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Fagus on March 18, 1930, the son of the late Andrew Harrison and Sara Elizabeth Bedwell.

He married Virginia Marie Kitchen. They were married for 56 years and had eight children.

Mr. Bedwell worked as a building contractor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Dan Franklin Bedwell, Hosea Orville Bedwell and Louis Edward Bedwell; and two sisters, Goldie Marie Clemons and Edith Irine Bedwell.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Marie Kitchen Bedwell; eight children, Janie Marie Jones of Malden, Judy Ann Broughton of North Little Rock, Jeanette Allen Alstadt of Jonesboro, James Ledell Bedwell and Janice Kaye Bedwell Gott, both of Sherwood, Johnny Dwight Bedwell of Piggott and Jerry Dewon Bedwell and Joel David Bedwell, both of Jonesboro; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Andrew Jackson Bedwell and Julius Grant Bedwell of California and Cletius Eugene Bedwell of Missouri; and one sister, Ruby Katherine Javornik of Colorado.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Anthony Dowdy and Daniel Simonin officiating. Johnny Bedwell gave the eulogy.

Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers were David Bedwell, Jeffrey Bedwell, Sean Bedwell, Tanner Bedwell, Glen Smith Jr., James Craft, Rick Johnson and Steve Bearden. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Kim, Cassie, Kara, Missy, Ashley, Krystal, Jessica, Jennifer, Heather and Carla.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to hospice.

DeWitt F. Carman

DeWitt F. Carman, 83, of Piggott, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Murphy Health Care.

He was born April 21, 1921, in Peach Orchard, Ark., the son of the late Willard and Carrie Culp Carman.

He married LaVerne Gauf on May 24, 1942. They had two daughters.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shelly McKenney; one sister, Neoma Peace; and two brothers, Dale Carman and Amel Carman.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Carman; two daughters, Laura Sue McKenney of Blytheville and Shirley Carman of Piggott; two grandchildren, Kelly McKenney of Gosnell and Johnny Ray McKenney of Beale Air Force Base, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Karli, Kaylee and Korey; one sister, Shelva Jean Grindstaff of Dexter; three brothers, W.C. Carman and A.L. Carman, both of St. Francis, and Harold Carman of Vallejo, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Jerry Morgan officiating. Burial followed in the Gravel Hill Cemetery in St. Francis. Pallbearers were Junior Haywood, John Brawner, Lelan Hendrix, Gordon Miller, Brian Rose and David Ballard.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Arvin Edwin Skidmore

Arvin Edwin Skidmore, 81, of Beebe, Ark., died Oct. 1, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 23, 1922, to Milo and Pearl Skidmore in Piggott.

He graduated from Piggott High School as valedictorian and married Laurene Nichols on Sept. 7, 1946.

An Air Force Veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a farmer for twenty years and retired from ABF in 1995. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, a Mason and a Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Skidmore is survived by his wife, Laurene Skidmore; two daughters, Myra Skidmore Cobb (Jim) of Rolla, Mo., and Teresa Skidmore of Maumelle, Ark.; grandchildren Jim Ed Cobb (Sherri) of Nampa, Idaho, and Jason Cobb (Cherie Beth) of Crystal City, Mo.; one brother, Harrison Skidmore (Cora May) of Piggott; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Beebe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association, One St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, AR, or a charity of one's choice.

Ray Knight

Ray Knight, 78, formerly of Piggott, of Trumann, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in Jonesboro.

He was born July 2, 1926, in Judsonia, Ark., the eldest son of Henry Theodore and Sylvia Pearl (Leggett) Knight.

He graduated from Piggott High School, attended Arkansas State University, and lived in Trumann for 50 years. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He retired from the Singer Company as Manager of Shipping and Transportation in 1983. He remained active in the Trumann Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, and other community organizations. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Trumann.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Dr. James William Knight, Ralph E. Knight and Doyne L. Knight; and one son-in-law, Jim Norman.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann (Kinny) Knight of the home; two daughters, Deborah "Debby" Norman of Trumann and Elizabeth "Libby" Evans and husband, Jim, of Atoka, Tenn; one granddaughter Beth (Norman) Dye and husband, Jason, of Jackson, Tenn; one great-grandson, Ryan Dye of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Alice Williams of Searcy and Daphna Hall of Hot Springs.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Trumann, with Dr. Tad Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Trumann.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Trumann, The Rotary's Ray Knight Scholarship Foundation or the Parkinson Association.

Shirley Lochtan

Shirley Lochtan, 71, of Greenway, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born February 3, 1935 in Rector and was the daughter of the late Aubry and Bessie McCord Redmon.

She was preceded in death by four brothers: Sam, Donald, Bill and Berl Ray Redmon, and one sister Barbara Jinkins.

Survivors include her daughter Marsha Matlock; one sister Dorotha Henderson of Marmaduke; a host of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 in Mitchell Cemetery with Elder Devon Horton officiating. Viewing was held Monday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time. Pallbearers were Ronnie Redmon, Dennis Redmon, Gary Redmon, Larry Redmon, Mike Redmon and Ted Goodman. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
