Anna Mae French

Anna Mae French, 80, of Piggott, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, in St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born November 7, 1924, the daughter of the late George Franklin and Minnie Frances Carlson Fisher.

She was united in marriage to James Leroy French on January 26, 1946. They had three children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leroy French; one daughter, Carol Ann French; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth.

She is survived by one daughter, Sherry Schulte and husband, Chuck, of Piggott; one son, Hal French and wife, Carla, of Piggott; four grandchildren, Joe Don Schulte and wife, Beth, Brian Schulte, Misti Sanders and husband, Brent, and Staci Bohr and husband, Eric; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Bohr and Coleman Schulte; three sisters, Dolly Poole and Agnes Moore, both of Piggott, and Alene Wood of Atlanta; one brother, Earl Fisher of Piggott; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Charles Carrens and Kevin Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott. Pallbearers were Joe Don Schulte, Brian Schulte, Brent Sanders, Eric Bohr, Don Wood and Roger McKenney.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna Underwood

Edna Underwood, 93, of Piggott, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell.

She was born on August 10, 1911, in Springerton, Ill., the daughter of the late Edmond and Clara Pifer Johnson.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Underwood on Jan. 18, 1928. They had five daughters.

Mrs. Underwood was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Underwood; one grandson, Kevin Pobst; two great-grandchildren, Dustin McIntosh and Ethan Doyle; one sister, Nelda Settlemoir; two brothers, Merrel Johnson and Maurice Johnson; and two sons-in-laws, Wendell Lee Potts and Charles Gordon.

She is survived by five daughters, Bernice Gordon of Stevensville, Mich., Ella Jean Lemons and husband, Louis, of Okay, Okla., Patsy Pobst and husand, Ray, of Piggott, Geraldine Potts of Dallas and Sonya Cole of Piggott; 12 grandchildren, Bernita Foster, Louie Lemons, Charley Lemons, Phyllis Looney, Sondra Gatewood, Teresa Dunlap, Angie McIntosh, Shawn Potts, Shane Potts, Tonya Doyle, Lewis Cole and Lance Cole; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leland Johnson of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Vernon Johnson of Searcy; a sister-in-law, Florine Johnson of Florissant, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Bro. Kim Bridges officiating. Burial followed in the Underwood Cemetery near Piggott. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Lt. Col. Louis Lemons, Charles Arthur Lemons, Lewis Gaylon Cole, Lance Cole, Shawn Potts and Shane Potts.

Curtis Bruce Moore

Curtis Bruce Moore, 46, of New Braunfels, Texas, died March 16, 2005, at his home in New Braunfels.

He was born January 14, 1959, in Kennett.

He graduated from Piggott High School in 1977, and later earned an associate degree in Photography at Southern Arkansas Technical College in Camden, Ark.

He had been employed at Huisache Grill in New Braunfels for six years where he leaves behind many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hudson Linuel Moore; paternal grandfather, Hudson Moore; maternal grandparents, Malcolm Finley and Veda Finley Wilburn.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Byrd and husband, Jack, of Piggott; two sisters, Diana Collinsworth of Pensacola, Fla., and Janet Watson of Piggott; one brother, Glen Moore and wife, Sherry, of Piggott; a step-sister, Jackie Lovins of Greenway; two nieces, Jennifer Little and Lauren Watson; two nephews, Jason Little and Logan Moore; grandmother, Berniece Moore of Piggott; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel in Piggott.

Pamela Elaine "Pam" (Burdin) Layton

Pamela Elaine "Pam" (Burdin) Layton, 51, of Harrisburg, died on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at her home.

Mrs. Layton was born Jan. 27, 1954, in Texas, the daughter of David Baggs and Mary Eaton Baggs.

She was an L.P.N. and had previously worked st several area nursing homes. She was a graduate of Black River Vo-Tech in Pocahontas and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Harrisburg.

She married Charles E. Layton on May 3, 1997, and they enjoyed nearly eight years together. SHe loved to crochet and write and wrote several articles and poems.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Baggs.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Layton of the home; her father, David Baggs of Burkeburnett, Texas; one son, Terry Randall Burdin II of Piggott, who is currently serving in Iraq; one daughter, Tonya Renee McKenzie and her husband, Michael, of Grayville, Ill.; three sisters, Judy Brawley of Yukon, Okla., Ann Moyer of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Jan Collins of Huber Heights, Ohio; one brother, Tim Baggs of Wichita Falls, Texas; and five grandchildren, Quade McKenzie, Tyler McKenzie, Anton Linder, Bailey Burdin and Libby Burdin.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2005, at Weston Funeral Service Chapel in Harrisburg with Rev. Gary Brown and Rev. Greg Leatherwood officiating. Burial followed in Holly Springs Cemetery in Harrisburg. Pallbearers were Greg Leatherwood, Levi Kinman, Frank Hinshaw, Lewis J. Layton, Carl Wilson and Howard Hitt.

Frances Arends Brannan

Frances Arends Brannan, 92, of Columbia, Mo., died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Bluff Nursing Home in Columbia.

She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Malden, the daughter of the late Elwood D. Johnson and Ima Moore Johnson.

She was married to Joseph N. Arends II, he preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1965. Her second husband was Dr. Lloyd Brannan, he also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Brannan was a retired piano teacher. She attended Southeast Missouri Teachers College, the University of Missouri at Columbia and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro and also served as the church organist for the First United Methodist Church in Malden for over 40 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Club, the Adene Keller Music Club, the DEREIGN Club and the Treble Clef Club.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Roselynn Hobbs and Margaret Sparks.

She is survived by two sons, John Warren Arends and wife, Martha, of Jonesboro and Joseph Nick Arends and wife, Ruth Ann, of Columbia, Mo.; three grandchildren, Rowe Arends and wife, Becki, of Holts Summit, Mo., Captain Patrick Ryan Arends and wife, Susan, of Germany and Kristi Dawn Arends of Seattle, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Arends and Caden Arends; one step-daughter, Judy Brannan Graves of Little Rock; and two step-granddaughters, Julie and Allison.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2005, in the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with Rev. L. Glenn Pettes officiating. Burial followed in Park Cemetery in Malden.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro or the First United Methodist Church of Piggott.

Jean R. Vancil

Jean R. Vancil, 77, of Holcomb died Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.

He was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, the son of Ernest Randolph Vancil Sr. and Maude Mae Loyd.

He was united in marriage to Jackie Ann Watson on Dec. 19, 1953, in Beech Corner, Mo. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Vancil was a retired farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church in Holcomb. He was a United States Army Veteran. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Pemiscot-Dunklin Co-op and the Board of Directors of M&A Electric Power Cooperative.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and one brother, Ernest "Pete" Randolph Vancil Jr.

He is survived by a special companion, Shirley Harris of Holcomb; two sons, Michael Jean Vancil and wife, Sheri, of Piggott and Robert Scott Vancil and wife, Koren, of Kilgore, Texas; one daughter, Lee Ann Forbus and husband, Ron, of Holcomb; one brother, Jack Loyd Vancil and wife, Winnie, of Campbell; three grandchildren, Kelly Garrett, Jarrod Vancil and Brayden Vancil; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2005, in the Landess Funeral Chapel at Campbell with Rev. Randy Vaughn officiating. Burial followed in the Loyd Cemetery in Holcomb.

Cloyce W. "Hank" Golden

Cloyce W. "Hank" Golden, 92, of Piggott died Friday, May 27, 2005, in the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell.

He was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Greenway, the son of the late William Henry and Rhoda Jane Jewell Golden.

He was united in marriage to Mamie E. Lovelady on Oct. 23, 1937. They had three children.

A long-time resident of Piggott, he was a master mechanic by trade. The residents of Piggott often called on him during the evenings and weekends to request help with their cars that wouldn't start or that needed to be towed. He would always stop what he was doing to help someone when he was called.

He enjoyed gardening and was known by the abundant vegetable gardens that he produced each year, always sharing the fresh produce with friends and neighbors.

After retiring, he enjoyed taking spring vacations with his children to Augusta, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Nashville, Dallas-Fort Worth and Oklahoma City, Okla.

On Oct. 6, 2002, mayor Bud Holcomb proclaimed the day as "Hank Golden Day" in honor of his 90th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie E. Golden on Sept. 6, 1990; and two sisters, Maxine Walker and Elena Gray.

He is survived by three children, Valo Dement and husband, Bob, of Malden, Johnny Mack Golden and wife, Carol, of Summerville, S.C., and Bonnie Ham and husband, Sam, of Blytheville; five grandchildren, Robert Dement, Perry Dement, Steve Crowson, Cyndi Ham and Michael Ham; two great-grandchildren, Elizabethe Dement and David Dement; one sister, Pauline Mitchell of Fenton, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Charles Smith and Charles Crowson officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery at Greenway. Active pallbearers were Eddie Benbrook, Marion Blue, Randy Lovelady, Blane Wilhite, Weldon Lovelady and Brock Russell. Honorary pallbearers included William Crowson, Charles Crowson, Jim Walker, Myron Rogers and James Beaver.

Brenda Kay Smart

Brenda Kay Smart, 54, of Marked Tree died Sunday, May 29, 2005, in Marked Tree.

She was born Sept. 28, 1950, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of U.L. and Charlene Wilma Lawerence Watson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, U.L. and Charlene Wilma Watson; and one sister, Angie Whitehorn.

She is survived by one daughter, Dana Smart of Marked Tree; one brother, Gary Watson of Arab, Ala.; close friend, Weir Beckon of Marked Tree; ex-husband, Rickey Smart of Greenway; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (today), June 1, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with George Haygood officiating. Burial will follow in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth (Hubba) Hansard, Ronnie Nichols, Jim Gearhart, Tom Morris, Mike Patterson and Ricky Hutchens. Honorary pallbearers will include Danny Broughton, Billy Adams, George Britton, Jerry Gibson, Chris Terrell and Joe Johnson.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Oliver F. Craig

Oliver F. Craig, 69, of O'Fallon, Mo., died Saturday, May 21, 2005.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1935, in Pollard, the son of Lucy Craig and the late Louie Craig.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louie Craig; one daughter, Deborah Sue Sims; and one brother, Roland (Brenda) Craig.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Sue Craig; mother, Lucy Craig; one daughter, Beverly Craig; his grandchildren, Michael Sims, and Krista and Brandon Steed; one great-grandson, Konner Steed; and three brothers, Curt (Dorothy) Craig, Don (Gayle) Craig and Bill (Betty) Craig.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2005, in the chapel at Baue Funeral and Memorial Center, located at 3950 West Clay, St. Charles, Mo. Burial followed in the Memorial Gardens in St. Charles, Mo.
