Betty Sue (Roden) Bailey

Betty Sue (Roden) Bailey, 76, of Greenway died Friday, April 14, 2006, at Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born Sept. 5, 1929, the daughter of William and Hallie (Pugh) Roden in Brilliant, Ala.

On Jan. 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Leslie Bailey in Piggott. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2004.

She obeyed the gospel at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in 1945 and after the church at Pleasant Valley no longer had worship she worshiped at the Greenway Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton Roden; and one sister, Vera Lee (Roden) Trammell.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Bobbie Roden of Tupelo, Miss., and all her in-laws of the Bailey family; two nieces and a nephew, Patsy and Larry Copeland of Rector, Monica and Jimmy Spencer of Tupelo, Miss., and Rusty and Karen Roden of Lafayette, La.; three great-nieces, Nancy Beth Copeland, Annina Rose Spencer and Hallie Elizabeth Roden; four great-nephews, Allen

Haywood, Chris and Shannon Haywood and John Roden; one great-great-nephew, Landon Haywood; and many other friends who mourn her passing including the whole congregation of the Greenway Church of Christ, with special remembrance of Mr. and Mrs. Hardin Hill, Mrs. Virginia Mack, the Turner family, Mrs. Diane Midkiff and other very special friends.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday (today), April 19, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (today), April 19, 2006, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Topper Killough and Tim Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott is in charge of the arrangements.

Vera Herring

Vera Herring, 91, of McDougal died Friday, April 14, 2006, in the Gideon Care Center in Gideon, Mo.

She was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Senath, Mo., the daughter of the late John and Frances Barker Sutfin.

She was united in marriage to Connride Herring on Oct. 1, 1938. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1989.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Eulas Sutfin and Ollen Sutfin; and one son-in-law, J.C. McKenney.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta McKenney of McDougal and Diane Parrish and husband, Eldon, of Piggott; six grandchildren, Darlene Ward, Teresa Calhoun, Gavin Grissom, Randy Parrish, Leslie Parrish and Leah Kilbreath; one sister, Marie Gilbee of Corning; seven great-grandchildren, Shane Ward, Danielle Francis, Christal Smith, Bentley Parrish, Kyle Thompson, Chelsey Kilbreath and Matthew Parrish; five great-great-grandchildren, Jessie Ward, Jacob Ward, Austin Francis, Fisher Francis and Hunter Smith; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Danny Self and Eldon Parrish officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard. Pallbearers were Mike Ward, Danny Calhoun, Shane Ward, Kenny Francis, Gavin Grissom and Charles Morrisett.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

James Ray Atkison

James Ray Atkison, 81, of Little Rock, formerly of Piggott, died on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the John McClellan V.A. Hospital in Little Rock.

He was born Oct. 18, 1924, the son of the late Benjamin Percy and Mable Beatrice (Hill) Atkison.

While serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, he received eight Bronze Stars. During his time in the Army he served as a small engine mechanic.

He worked for General Motors in Michigan for many years as a mechanic. After leaving Michigan, he taught a small engine repair course at Arkansas Technical School in Little Rock.

Many in the Piggott area will remember B.J. Atkison Real Estate and Insurance, which his father owned and he worked in for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Julius Atkison, Aaron Atkison, Joseph Atkison, Edward (Crouse) Atkison and Doyne Atkison; and one sister, Eulale Lavelle.

He is survived by one son, James Samuel Atkison of Arizona; two daughters, Carolyn S. Kurosu of Hawaii and Jimmy Kay Cremer of California; four grandchildren; and many loving friends and relatives.

Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, at the Irby Funeral Chapel with Don Morris officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery at Greenway.

Martha Marie Blurton

Martha Marie Blurton, 62, of Ellsinore, Mo., died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at her residence.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1944, in Wardell, Mo., the daughter of the late Cecil Hampton and Ruth Cheshire Hampton.

She was united in marriage to Limuel Blurton on July 16, 1966, in Wardell, Mo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one infant son; one sister, Melba Shumate; and three brothers, Cecil Hampton, Leon Hampton and Jerry Hampton.

Survivors include her husband, Limuel Blurton of Ellsinore, Mo.; three daughters, Vickie Hankins of Chatham, Ill., Teresa Herren of Caruthersville, Mo., and Karren Shaffer of Ellsinore, Mo.; two sons, Glen Stansell of Ellsinore, Mo., and Dewayne Blurton of Piggott; three sisters, Dorothy Buck of Poplar Bluff, Earlene Ferguson of Qulin and Julia Hampton of Ellsinore, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today), April 19, 2006, at the Bradshaw Chapel in Wardell, Mo., with Rev. William Quillin officiating. Burial will follow in the Wardell Memorial Cemetery in Wardell.

Bradshaw Funeral Home of Wardell is in charge of the arrangements.

Johnnie Lee McCullough

Johnnie Lee McCullough, 75, of Hot Springs died on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, in a Hot Springs hospital.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1930, in Webb, Miss., the son of the late Wilson W. McCullough and Jewell (Scott) McCullough.

He attended Sulphur Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Williams and Mayedeon Turner; one son, Johnnie Allen McCullough; and his first wife, Gloria McCullough.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Bradshaw) McCullough of Hot Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Joe and Lisa McCullough of Nashville; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Greg and Teresa Allen of Arkadelphia; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet Lee McCullough and Mark Freeman of Hot Springs; two stepdaughters and one son-in-law, Diane and Walter Smith of

Magnolia and Meredith Ann Caver; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilson E. and Martha McCullough of Stoutsville, Mo., and A.J. and Sue McCullough of Ellsinore, Mo.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Edwin Dahlgren of Poplar Bluff and Lena "Totsy" and Ira Causey of Piggott; one grandchild, Daniel McCullough; two stepgrandsons, Jeremy David Allen and Will Smith; and one great-grandchild, Andrew Caver.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2006, in the Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel in Hot Springs with Bro. Eric Ivy and Dr. Walter Smith officiating. Burial followed in Morning Star Cemetery in Hot Springs. Active pallbearers were Ira Causey, Mark Freeman, Greg Allen, James Bradshaw, James Adams and Daniel McCullough. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Jack and Betty Parker, Glynn Freeman, Dr. Timothy Webb and Genesis Treatment Center and Maxie Haynes.

Caruth-Hale Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Roland Ervin Thornton

Roland Ervin Thornton, 84, of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Piggott, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, in the Veterans Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

He was born April 28, 1921, in Roby, Mo., the son of the late D.D. and Mary Adeline Davenport Thornton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

He was united in marriage to Attrice Aulene Holloway on Nov. 16, 1940. They had four children.

He is survived by his wife, Attrice Aulene Thornton of Poplar Bluff; three sons, Jerry Thornton of Milton, Fla., Dwight Thornton of Oveta, Fla., and Glenn Thornton of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Phyllis Barnetson of Junction City, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2006, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Jim Whitlock officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Jackson, Juston Jackson, Billy Joe Hardin, Richard Petty, Buryl Petty, Jerry Burkhead and Wallace Gookin.

Jimmy D. McLeskey

Jimmy D. McLeskey, 70, of Elizabeth, Ark., died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at his daughter's home in Jonesboro.

Born in Piggott, he moved to Jonesboro in 1964 and had moved to Elizabeth about five years ago. He was a building contractor and a Navy veteran.

He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He loved his church and also loved fishing.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Grimes McLeskey; two sons, Jerry Keith Summers and wife, Brenda, and William "Butch" Summers, both of Jonesboro; three daughters, Sue Summers of Jonesboro, Sarah Ann Parker of Houston, Texas, and Terry Lynn McLeskey Needham and husband, Mark, of Jonesboro; one goddaughter, Letha Grimm and husband, Paul, of Jonesboro; three brothers, Paul McLeskey of Livonia, Mich., Ivan McLeskey of Dunigan, Calif., and Douglas "Sonny" McLeskey of Lafe; six sisters, Juanita Bookout of Madison Heights, Mich., Lucille Jewell of Alton, Mo., Geraldine Harmon of Piggott, Ella Jean Martin of Mountain Home, Barbara Pareizs of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Linda Sue Smith of Jonesboro; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Redus and husband, Ken, Jackie Dotson, Ashley Dotson, Jared West, Justin West, Chelsey Needham Gann, Sarah Summers and Katie Summers; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Tyler, Krista, Jaelah and Ali'ah. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Roller-Farmers Union Chapel with Warren Newman and Joey Rupard officiating. Burial followed in Jonesboro Memorial park Cemetery.

Paul E. Alderson

Paul E. Alderson, 70 years and nine months, of Fredericktown, Mo., died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Parkland Regional Medical Center in Farmington, Mo.

He was born in Clay County, Ark., June 14, 1935, the son of the late William and Eva (Pierson) Alderson.

On Dec. 29, 1954, he was united in marriage to Lucille Viecent of Puxico, Mo.

He attended the Fourth Street Baptist Church in St. Louis. When he and his wife moved to Fredericktown, they attended Marquand Baptist Church in Marquand, Mo. He loved to sing bass in the choir and did so until his health would not allow him to attend church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Alderson of Fredericktown, Mo.; one son, Douglas Alderson and wife, Judy, of Cadet, Mo.; two daughters, Janice Nicholes of Cuba, Mo., and Debra Shepard and husband, Dave, of Lawton, Okla.; one sister, Melba Foster and husband, Donald, of Piggott; six grandchildren, Gary Shepard and wife, Roxeana, Charlie, Randy and Amy Alderson, Beth Wisely and husband and Julia Blucker; seven great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2006. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006, at Follis and Sons Funeral Home at Fredericktown with Rev. Don Estses officiating. Interment followed in Laurel Hills Cemetery in St. Louis.

Martha Marie Blurton

Martha Marie Blurton, 62, of Ellsinore, Mo., died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at her residence.
