Winifred E. Harris

Winifred E. Harris, 86, of Albion, Mich., died Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Tendercare-Albion.

She was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Hunter, Ark., to Homer Ray and Minnie Beulah Pipkin Strickler.

She worked at Union Steel and Corning Glass in Albion for many years before marrying Bernice Harris and moving to Chicago in 1958. She moved back to Albion after her retirement in 1984.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Albion. She enjoyed religious and country music and antique hunting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Ray and Minnie Beulah Strickler; and a niece, Jerre Martin.

She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth James Strickler and wife, Katherine, of Vandercook Lake; two nieces, Cherre Neitzka of Chicago and Sharon Medina of Vandercook Lake; one nephew, James Bradshaw of Mooresville, N.C.; and one great-nephew, Dennis Neitzka of Albion.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion with Rev. John Sterner officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to donor's choice.

Emily Allen Hopkins

Emily Allen Hopkins, 60, of Ripley, Tenn., died June 13, 2004, in Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.

She was born July 21, 1943, in Boydsville, the daughter of the Eugene King Allen and Wilma Phillips Allen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Vaughn Hopkins; one brother, David Taylor Allen; and her father, Eugene King Allen.

She is survived by one son, David Hopkins of Ripley, Tenn.; two daughters, Belinda Hilliard of Ripley and Melinda Olds of Halls, Tenn.; her mother, Wilma Allen of Pollard; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Garner Funeral Home in Ripley with Bro. J.B. Ammons officiating. Burial followed in Ripley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to New Hope Cemetery in Pollard.

Mae Runyon

Mae Runyon, 97, of Saint Charles, Mo., died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 16, 1906, in Athens, Ala., the daughter of the late Robert W. and Delphia S. Sharp Smith.

She was united in marriage to Henry O. Runyon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Runyon; two sons, Delbert and Connie Runyon; five brothers, Jimmy, Ted, Shorty, Paul and Lawrence Smith; two sisters, Dolly Penrod and Mary Drusella Smith.

She is survived by eight sons, Ronnie Runyon of Saint Charles, Mo., Ray Runyon of Warrenton, Mo., Sam Henry of Buford, Ga., Neal Henry of Lucedale, Miss., Tom Runyon of Saint Charles, Mo., Noah Runyon of Vienna, Mo., Ross Runyon of League City, Texas, and Frank Runyon of Saint Charles, Mo.; two daughters, Savana Ford of Pevely, Mo., and Delphia Nix of Camden, Ark.; 33 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard with Edwin Runyon officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry Dewayne Jackson

Henry Dewayne Jackson, 81, of Paragould died Friday, June 25, 2004, at his old home place in the middle of the woods.

Born on Nov. 15, 1922, in Greene County, he was a believer in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the Army.

Affectionately known as "Uncle Wayne" by many more than family, he loved his family, he valued his friends and he enjoyed numerous little woodland friends that played at his door. He laughed a lot and loved to tell jokes.

He was an active member of the American Legion Post Number 17 and Masonic Lodge Number 368. He was an excellent marksman.

In the late 1950's, he created the political cartoon "Smedley Sez" for the "The Big Picture", a Paragould daily newspaper. More recently, he painted the portraits of Dewey Dowdy and Norris Cathey that are displayed at the VFW Post Number 2242. He also painted the signs at the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellzena Ford and Lonnie Everrett Jackson; and two brothers, Leo Everrett Jackson and Vernon William Jackson.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lucille Jackson of Paragould; three nieces and their spouses, Leola and Sam Atchison, Lillian and Jerry White, Lee Carole and John Poe, all of Paragould; a nephew and his spouse, Lonnie and Theresa Jackson of Batesville; six great-nieces and nephews; sixt step-great-nieces and nephews; and one step-great-great-niece.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Heath Funeral Home in Paragould. Burial was at the Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Chaplain Ransom Walker officiated at the Masonic graveside service. Mason acted as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post Number 17.

Florence Davis

Florence Davis, 89, of Piggott died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

She was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Pollard, the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Virgie Pollard Nettles.

She was united in marriage to Ernest Gower and they had two children. She was united in marriage to V.L. Davis who preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1980.

She was also preceded in death by eight brothers; one sister; three grandsons, Michael John Gower, Bobby Clay Gower and Charles Gower; and two step-sons, Phil Davis and Nick Davis.

She is survived by two sons, Bob Gower and wife, Rachel, of Piggott and Tom Gower and wife, Judy, of Pollard; two grandsons, Mike Hanrahan of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Scott Gower of Stuttgart; four granddaughters, Tammy Causey of Piggott, Laura Ann Cox of Crystal City, Mo., Shannon Gilbee of Austell, Ga., and Tanya Hayes of Columbia, Ky.; two sisters, Dora McGhee and Rachel Ridgeway, both of Piggott; eight great-grandsons; eight great-granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Kevin Murray and Gary Hancock officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard. Pallbearers were Zach Gower, Scott Gower, Donald Foster, Philip Toombs, Edward Thompson and Spencer Permenter.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Wayne Mowery

Wayne Mowery, 49, of Piggott died Friday, July 2, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 25, 1954, the son of Kenneth and Rita Manzanares Mowery.

He was united in marriage to Pat Estes on Nov. 6, 1976, and they had two children.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Mowery; and his grandparents, Orvall and Mildred Mowery.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Mowery of Piggott; two sons, Timothy Lee Mowery of Nashville, Tenn., and John Thomas Mowery and wife, Wendy, of Paragould; his father, Kenneth Mowery and step-mother, Helen, of Piggott; five grandchildren, Andrew William Allan, Austin Tyler Mowery, Jacob Dillon Mowery, Ashlin Marie Mowery and Madeline Rene' Mowery; two sisters, Joyce Boshell of Mobile, Ala., and Annette Dutka of Piggott; one brother, David Mowery of Horn Lake, Miss.; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Duane Dutka officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Steve Piland, Steve Causey, Mike Hardin, Tim Blair, Mike Lane and Ron Ray. Honorary pallbearers were Jacob Dillon Mowery, Andrew William Allan and Austin Tyler Mowery.

Mary Imogene Underwood

Mary Imogene Underwood, 87, of West Melbourne, Fla., died July 2, 2004, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla.

She was born June 6, 1917, in Pollard, the daughter of Samuel Richard and Nora Johnson Pillow.

Mrs. Underwood was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was a charter member of the Normandy Road Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda; one sister, Lorene Nicholas; and one brother Bill Pillow.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, James E. Underwood of West Melbourne, Fla.; five sisters, Hazel Johnson, Magalene Porterfield, Kathleen Seal, Shirley Whaley and Barbara Mooney; and two brothers, John Pillow and Tom Pillow.

Graveside services were held at Roseland Park in Berkley, Mich., on Tuesday, July 6, 2004. Burial followed in Roseland Park.

Donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Florida, 412 South Palmetto Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL, 32114.

Eunice Maxine Howard

Eunice Maxine Howard, 75, of Piggott died July 3, 2004, at Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born July 4, 1928, in Clay County, the daughter of the late Glen and Floretta Mosbey Malone.

She was united in marriage to Charles Edward Howard on Jan. 17, 1947, in Piggott, they had two children.

Mrs. Howard was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Bruce Malone.

She is survived by her husband, Ed Howard of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Rick Gillette of Trumann and Judy and Ivan Smart of Greenway; four grandchildren, Derek Gillette of New Bern, N.C., Bradley Gillette of Trumann, Mindy Carter of Lake City and Shannon Smart of Piggott; and seven great-grandchildren, Tommy Edward Gillette, Emily Ann Gillette, Joseph Gillette, Damon Smart, Shanna Carter, Chandler Smart and Jacob Smart.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Piggott with Bro. Charles Carrens officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers were John Clemons, Shannon Smart, Derek Gillette, Bradley Gillette, John Harlan, Orville Skinner and Damon Smart. Honorary pallbearers were Bo Brandon, Bob Hampton, Dr. Jerry Muse, Dr. Hillard Duckworth and Charles Underwood.

Irby Funeral Service of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Wesley Franklin Beck

Wesley Franklin Beck, 54, of Rector died Sunday, July 4, 2004, in the Baxter County Regional Hospital in Mountain Home, Ark.

He was born Nov. 20, 1949, in Piggott, the son of the late Carl F. Beck Sr. and Beatrice Morris Beck.

He was united in marriage to Janice Kay Arant on Nov. 4, 1972, they had three children.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl F. Beck Sr.; and one sister, Daunita Mauldin.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Kay Beck of Rector; three children, Jason Brandon Beck of Nimmons, Chad Wesley Beck and wife, Ashley, of Piggott and Angela Dawn Pastiva and husband, David, of Walnut Ridge; one son, Rodney Heath Beck of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Jacob Brandon Beck and Ashtyn Brooke Beck; his mother, Beatrice Morris Beck of Nimmons; two brothers, Carl Beck of Rector and Charles Beck of Nimmons; seven sisters, Anna Kay Williamson of Wappapello, Mo., Bonnie Raney of Beebe, Brenda Hendley of Nimmons, Charlene Schleuder of Denver, Colo., Diane Thomas of Topeka, Kan., Paula Hillis of Wappapello and Carlotta Morrison of Paragould; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Donnie Morrison, Kevin Murray and Danny Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the Nimmons Cemetery in Nimmons. Pallbearers were Brett Palmer, Terry Palmer, J.W. Taylor, Greg Bohr, Alan Scott, Sonny Masterson, Jerry Sample and Mike Morgan.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home in Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
