Les Russell

Les Russell, 93, of Corning died on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Clay Healthcare in Corning.

He was born March 29, 1911, in Greenway, the son of Thomas Adron and Jennie Belle Latta Russell.

He was united in marriage to Anna Raye Blackwood on Jan. 7, 1940, in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Russell was a former co-owner of Russell-Ermert Funeral Home in Corning as well as a funeral director and embalmer. He attended the First United Methodist Church in Corning.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Adron and Jennie Belle Russell; and two sisters, Dorothy Heidbreder and Emma Lou Morgan.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Raye Russell of Corning; one son, Don Russell and wife, Clarissa, of Corning; one granddaughter, Alexandria Russell of Corning; two brothers, Lloyd Russell of Piggott and Ivan Russell of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel in Corning with Rev. Larry Hughes officiating. Burial followed in the Corning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Gronings, Lonnie McKinney, Blue Riggan, Steve Hardin, Jim Clifton, James Leonard and Bill Pettit.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Corning or Noah's Ark Preschool.

Ermert Funeral Home of Corning was in charge of the arrangements.

Naomi Faye Reed

Naomi Faye Reed, 64, of Paragould, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born Feb. 14, 1940, the daughter of the late Eddie and Minnie Reagan Greene.

She was united in marriage to James C. Reed on Feb. 19, 1958, and they had three children.

She was preceded in death by two children, Pamela Christine Reed in 1959 and Ricky Carrol Reed in 1994; five brothers, Everett Ray Throgmorton, Eldon Dale Throgmorton, Onard Lee Greene, Jerry Wayne Greene and one infant; and one sister, LaVada Throgmorton.

She is survived by her husband, James C. Reed of Paragould; one son, Perry Greg Reed and wife, Alice, of Paragould; two brothers, Ralph E. Greene and wife, Marie, of Paragould, and Eddie Franklin Greene and wife, Alta Mae, of Piggott; two sisters, Joyce Bond and husband, Paul, of Greenway and Linda Romine and husband, Ronnie, of Poplar Bluff; two grandchildren, Heather Christine Reed and Allison Sheree Reed; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Jon C. Binkley officiating. Pallbearers were Stephen Tinsley, Clint Greene, Chuck Davis, Tony Austin, Dewayne Reed and D.K. Kibler. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Magdalene Hill Carpenter Orr

Mary Magdalene Hill Carpenter Orr, 85, a resident of the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell died July 12, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

She was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Boydsville, the daughter of the late James Ephrey and Lois King Hill.

She was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Piggott.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elbert Carpenter and Vernon Orr; three brothers, James Hill, Herbert Hill and Albert Hill; and three sisters, Ludene Lopes, Estelle Hill and Dorothy Dean.

She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Carpenter McFarlin and son-in-law Otis McFarlin of Piggott; one granddaughter, Lesa McFarlin White and husband, J. Michael White, of Moore, S.C.; one grandson, Mack O. McFarlin and wife, Rachel, of Anderson, Ala.; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Mitchell White; one great-granddaughter, Ashleigh White; one sister, Joella Pollard of Piggott; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday (today), July 14, 2004, at the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Lowell Book and Charles Carrens officiating. Burial will be in Piggott Cemetery.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Garland Mayo

Garland Mayo, 59, of Piggott died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 16, 1945, in Piggott, the son of the late Ivory C. and Ethel L. Brandon Mayo.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Madolyn Turner and Betty Mayo.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Mayo, of Piggott; two daughters, Sherrie Wofford and husband, Dale, of Paragould, and Shelly Samples and husband, Bryan, of Piggott; five grandchildren, Brandon Wofford, Sebastian Wofford, Blade Wofford, Hunter Samples and Hayden Samples; one sister, Wilma Dale and husband, James, of Piggott; one brother-in-law, Dallas Fry and wife, Sharon, of Campbell; one sister-in-law, Linda Barnwell and husband, Joe, of St. Clair; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 16, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Richard Akins officiating. Burial was in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway.

Mayo's grandsons served as pallbearers.

Novella Kathern Nelson

Novella Kathern Nelson, 83, of Holcomb, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born Nov. 4, 1920, in Bell City, Mo., daughter of William Allen Neal and Clara Emma Lowery Neal.

She married Robert Edward Nelson on Nov. 24, 1935, at Forty and Eight, Ark. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1997.

She was a homemaker and a teacher's aid for Head Start for three years. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Nelson and Ricky Nelson; one granddaughter, Carol Shaw; three brothers, James Neal, Billy Neal and Jessie Neal; and one sister, Jean Evans.

Survivors include seven daughters, Nancy Robinson of Campbell, Juanita Rees of Gordonville, Mo., Linda Shaw of Poplar Bluff, Patricia Burton of Campbell, Hope Schurman of Arnold, Mo., Pamela Porter of Taneyville, Mo., and Diane Ellison of Perryville, Mo.; four sons, David Nelson of West Memphis, Rick Nelson of Campbell, Tim Nelson of Yellville, and Jim Nelson of St. Francis; 38 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Omga Lovette of Round Lake, Ill., Berniece Gardner of Circle City, Mo., and Sue Maulding of Festus, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 19, at Landess Funeral Chapel in Campbell with Rev. Luther Crane officiating.

Interment was at Loyd Cemetery in Holcomb with Landess Funeral Home of Campbell in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Gillian

Dorothy M. Gillian, 69, of Campbell died Monday, July 12, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born January 16, 1935, in Colusa, Calif., the daughter of the late Thomas Earl and Sophie Myers Tucker.

She is survived by one daughter, Traci Carpenter of Campbell; five grandchildren, Jeremie Watts, Joshua Carpenter, Savannah Yount, Pierce Yount and Sierra Yount; two brothers, Thomas Tucker of Redding, Calif., and Robert Tucker of Colusa, Calif.; one sister, Barbara Alves of Bakersfield, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 16, in the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott, with Kevin Murray officiating.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Smith

Long-time Piggott resident Mrs. Mildred Smith died on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital. Mrs. Smith was 106-years-old.

She was born March 9, 1898, in Clay City, Ill., the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Hannah Blessing Brissenden. The Brissendens moved to Piggott in 1905 when she was just seven-years-old.

She was united in marriage to Harold Dewey Smith. They had one son.

The Smiths went into business in Piggott in 1937. At the time, Mr. Smith's primary business was making harnesses and saddles, but as society progressed and farmers traded in teams of horses for tractors the business changed into a shoe store. Mrs. Smith worked in the store until around 1976.

She and Harold were friends of the Pfeiffer family. Mrs. Smith donated a German beer stein to the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in 1998. The stein was given to her by Virginia Pfeiffer, the sister of Pauline Pfeiffer Hemingway, in 1928 after she returned from a visit to Europe. Mrs. Smith was also a member of a bridge club that included Pauline's mother, Mary Downey Pfeiffer. The bridge club played its games at various homes in the town.

In an interview in 1998, Mrs. Smith said that Ernest Hemingway spent a lot of time at the Smiths' shop on the courtsquare when he was in town.

Mrs. Smith was a charter member of the local V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dewey Smith; one son, Charlie Bill Smith; one daughter-in-law, Betty Smith; and three sisters, Kathleen Doty, Burnice Thomas and Edna Rudolph.

She is survived by one grandson, Charles L. Smith of North Little Rock; one granddaughter, Brenda Smith of Greenway; three great-grandchildren, Angel White of Greenway, Valerie Linker of North Little Rock and Josh Smith of Little Rock; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Josephine King of Piggott; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, in the First Christian Church in Piggott with Jay McPhearson officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wade Smart, John Daniel Smart, Johnny Wade Schmidt, Jeff Linker, Chad Goodman and Bryan Lynch. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank McKenney

Frank McKenney, 84, of Piggott, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at his home in Piggott.

He was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Piggott. He was the son of the late James Onia and Elizabeth Fox McKenney.

He was united in marriage to Opal Permenter on Oct. 6, 1939. They had four children.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James O. McKenney Jr. and Howard McKenney; three step-brothers, Leroy French, Eugene French and Sonny French; and one step-sister, Madeline Chase.

He is survived by his wife, Opal McKenney of Piggott; three sons, Roger McKenney and wife, Margie, of Piggott, Lowell McKenney and wife, Deanne, of Rector and Gary McKenney and wife, Gwen, of Pollard; one daughter, Brenda Fielder and husband, Rick, of Cabot; 10 grandchildren, Lynnette Beard, Delayne McKenney, Brian McKenney, Brandye Lucas, Trae Peacock, Brent Ezell, Melissa Brown, Jeff Fielder, Rachel Morgan and Garrett McKenney; seven great-grandchildren, Alex McKenney, Cody and Justin Peacock, Ethan and Mary Elizabeth Lucas, Gretchen Morgan and Bryant Underwood; one sister, Dora Causey of Piggott; one brother, Ansil McKenney of California; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in the Hitt's Chapel General Baptist Church with Anthony Dowdy and Charles Richardson officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Delayne McKenney, Trae Peacock, Brian McKenney, Garrett McKenney, Jeff Fielder, Mike Beard, Mark Morgan, Dustin Lucas and Brent Ezell.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Lynn Wilson

Lynn Wilson, 53, of Pollard, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

He was born Dec. 25, 1950, in Poplar Bluff, the son of Sydney Lomax Wilson and the late Lyman Theodore Wilson.

He married Sharon Umfleet on Sept. 18, 1953.

He was a Field Representative for Watermelon Brokerage and a member of the New Hope General Baptist Church in Holcomb.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lyman, and one brother, Donald Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Wilson of Pollard; his mother, Sydney Lomax Wilson of Holcomb; two daughters, Stephanie Estes and husband, Wade, and Sarah Jo Morgan and husband, Scotty, all of Holcomb; a son, Christopher Lynn Wilson, of Holcomb; three grandchildren, Kelsey Estes, Wyatt Estes and Elie Morgan; a mother and father-in-law, Herman and Jewell Umfleet, of Advance; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Vickie Umfleet, of Marshfield, Mo.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today), Sept. 1, 2004, in the Landess Funeral Chapel in Campbell with Bro. Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in Stanfield Cemetery in Clarkton.
