Estelle Manning

Estelle Manning, 91, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Dec. 2, 1911, in Marmaduke, and lived in Jonesboro for 50 years before moving to Cape Girardeau in 1994. She spent 43 years as a teacher and school administrator, working at Nema Tuggle Elementary and Annie Camp Junior High School. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Arkansas State University, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers' sorority. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edgar Manning; a brother, Grady Williams; and an infant sister.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ryland "Dutch" Meyr of Jackson Mo.; three granddaughters, Crescent Dush of Cape Girardeau, Cyndy Wrigley of Arnold, Mo., and Lindsey Meyr of Jackson, Mo.; one step-granddaughter, Morgan Lake; one great-granddaughter, Madison Dush; three step-great-grandsons, Jacob Dush, Jack Lake and Pete Lake; one sister-in-law, Edmonia Williams of Paragould; and one nephew, Phil Williams of Paragould.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Burial will be in Harvey's Chapel Cemetery near Marmaduke under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Pallbearers are Larry Dush, Gary Wrigley, Thad Lake, Eugene Layer, Dennis Layer and Phil Williams.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, the First Baptist Church Care Center, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Ted Spears

Ted Spears, 61, of Paragould, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Paragould. He had been employed by Monroe Auto Equipment for more than 31 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Margaret Spears and one brother, Daniel Spears.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Michael Spears of Paragould; four daughters and one son-in-law, April and Bruce Howard of Cave City, and Veronica Spears, Misty Henderson and Stacey Hollis, all of Paragould; two brothers, Aubrey Spears of Oregon and Fred Spears of Little Rock; two sisters, Barbara Cummins and Patricia Clark, both of Paragould; and two grandchildren, Breana Howard and Destiny Eno.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Shiloh Cemetery in Paragould with Harold Diggs officiating and under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Bruce Howard, Matt Eno, Bobby Everett, Tony Eno, Shannon Huffine and Ronnie Grady.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home. The procession will leave the funeral home at 10:50 a.m.

Ocesa L. Fortenberry

Ocessa L. Fortenberry, 65, of Paragould, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 2, 1938.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

James Roy Hunt

James Roy Hunt, 80, of Hudson, Fla., formerly of Paragould, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Regional Medical Center Bayonnet Point in Hudson.

He was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Paragould.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

James Allen Posey

James Allen Posey, 51, of Little Rock, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 13, 1951, in Paragould.

Sandra Kay Qualls

Sandra Kay Qualls, 61, of Lafe, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born June 21, 1942, in Baltimore, Md. She was a retired civil service clerk and typist. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a board member of the original Paragould Habitat for Humanity and worked federal and state elections for 15 years. She was also a board member of the Catholic Diocesan Council of Women for 20 years and a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, serving twice as president.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore John and Lorraine Mary Cyr Kraus.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh L. Qualls of Lafe; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh "Sandy" III and Holly Ann Qualls of Lee Vining, Calif., and Maj. Ted Donald and Christine Qualls of Columbus, Ga.; three half brothers, Robert Parkos of Fresno, Calif., Steven Parkos of Bailey, Colo., and Hughie Hughlin of Cucamonga, Calif.; five grandchildren, Ashley Blythe Qualls of Seattle, Wash., Maxwell Hugh Qualls and Jackson Qualls, both of Lee Vining, Rory Ted Qualls of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Hunter Qualls of Columbus, Ga.; and two aunts, Dorothy Ann Doyle of Lakewood, Calif., and Marianne Cyr of Lake Havaso City, Ariz.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father John Marconi and Deacon Rex Bouldin officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould under the direction of Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Kenny Wayne Edgin, Andrew Swindle, Jeremy Qualls, Brett Hicklin, Maxwell Hugh Qualls, Rory Ted Qualls and Josh Qualls.

Visitation will be from 7:30 until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m.

Burles Raleigh Scobey

Burles Raleigh Scobey, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2003, in Hot Springs Village. He was born in Beech Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Viola Scobey; three brothers, Artie, Lavern, and Hoyt Scobey; and one granddaughter, Suzanne White.

Survivors include his wife, Gerry Scobey, of Hot Springs Village; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim White of Hot Springs Village; three sisters, Bernice Plyler and Rebecca Golden of Flint, Mich., and Betty Lou Tabor of Hanover, Mass.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Arkansas Veteran's Cemetery in North Little Rock.

Joe Wayne Thompson

Joe Wayne Thompson, 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Methodist University Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Bucoda, Mo. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Senath American Legion Post and a member of the First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elizabeth McDole Thompson; and one son, Douglas Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie Thompson of Senath; one son and daughter-in-law, Danny Cain and Claudia Thompson of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Keith Bateman of Sikeston, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Pam Thompson of Senath; three sisters, Mavis Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., Betty Maples of St. Louis, Mo., and Doris Fitzgibbons of St. Charles, Mo.; six grandchildren, Ronnie Cain, Christy Bentley, Latasha Hauptman, Joe Don Thompson, and Ryan and Aaron Bateman; one great-grandson, Trenton Thompson; and many relatives and friends.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Senath with the Rev. Doug Clinton and the Rev. Derek Combs officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Gardens in Kennett.

Pallbearers are Steve Odle, Mardon Layne, Eddie Adams, Don Wallace, Scottie Jackson and John Wilcox.

Honorary pallbearers are the American Legion Members, Jimmie Don Odle, Kenneth Sikes, R.W. McLain, Joe Bost, and Larry Hemphill.

Betty Lou Burton

Betty Lou Burton, 62, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Paragould, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at White County Medical Center in Searcy.

She was born May 14, 1941, in Paragould. She was a homemaker and an avid sports fan. She loved Southern Gospel music and was a member of the Mesquite Church of Christ, where she was active in the women's ministry.

She was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Wilson Dollins.

Survivors include her husband, Terry F. Burton of Garland; her mother, Earline Dollins of Paragould; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Kelley Burton of Searcy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and David Cause and Kim and Troy Graham, all of Mesquite, Texas; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Karolyn Gregory of Paragould, and Brenda and Jimmy Dan Maddox of Jonesboro; and six grandchildren, Andrew Cause, Aaron Cause, Jennifer Graham, Gregory Graham, Kamryn Burton and Kyle Burton.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heath Colonial Chapel with Winston Burton and Larry McFadden officiating. Burial will be in Pine Knot Cemetery under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Richard Brummett, Mark Maddox, Timothy Maddox, David Cause, Troy Graham and Jimmy Dan Maddox.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Medina Children's Home or the American Cancer Society.

William Arvin Horne

William Arvin Horne, 86, of Bushnell, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in Dade City, Fla.

He was born in Beech Grove. He farmed and worked at Dr Pepper before moving to Flint, Mich., where he worked for 30 years at Buick Motor's plant.

He retired and moved to Bushnell, Fla. He attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Alan Horne; his parents, James B. and Janie Hardin Horne; six sisters, Dora Horne, Stella Davis, Ethel Russom, Vestal Norman, Zelma Russom and Alleen Rogers; and two brothers, Homer Horne and Elmer Horne.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie North Horne, of Bushnell, Fla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Janalee and Carl Fritzler, of Webster, Fla., and Kathy LaVeck of Mattydale, N.Y.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Purcell Funeral Home Chapel in Bushnell, Fla.. with the Rev. Al Dotson officiating.

Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Bushnell.

Visitation was from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Purcell Funeral Home Chapel in Bushnell.

Lewis Ervin Hughes, Jr.

Lewis Ervin Hughes, Jr., 26, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Regional Medical in Memphis.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jonesboro and an associate manager of Dixie Cafe.

He was a 1996 graduate of Nettleton High School and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Leah Newkirk Hughes of Jonesboro; his parents, Lewis, Sr., and Deborah Walker Hughes of Jonesboro; one brother, Tommy Dewayne Hughes of Jonesboro; his paternal grandparents, John and Annie Hughes of Poughkeepsie; his maternal grandparents, V.T. and Hazel Walker of Jonesboro; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro with the Rev. Kenneth Hargrave officiating. Burial will be in Nettleton Cemetery under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Pallbearers are Chris Clark, John Hill, Jr., David Bailey, Jason Veal, Brandon Fuller and Larry Busch.

Honorary pallbearers are Tim Newkirk, Jace Gasaway, Duncan Allison, Johnny Moore and the employees of the Jonesboro Dixie Cafe.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lavern E. Gray

Lavern E. Gray, 82, of Paragould, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 1, 1921.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Homer Alvis Craver

Homer Alvis Craver, 85, of Paragould, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Union City, Tenn. He was an Army veteran, a tank driver in World War II, the retired owner of Craver Hardware Co. and a former employee of Fisher Lime and Cement in Little Rock. He was a former member of Paragould Lions Club and an avid golfer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Craver; his parents, Homer and Carrie Welch Craver; and two brothers, Roy E. Craver and Raymond W. Craver.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Hettye Sue and Dr. William M. Bridger of Montgomery, Ala.; one sister, Evelyn May Craver Fuzzell of Union City, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Lisa Richardson of Montgomery, Ala., and Lara Bridger of Raleigh, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Anna Beatrice Richardson, Susanna Lauren Richardson, and Camilla Sinclair Richardson.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with Jeff Rainwater officiating.

Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Travis Moore, Mickey Bridger, Chuck Richardson, Joe Wessell, Bob Branch and Wilburn Smith.

Visitation will be from noon until 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to First United Methodist Church.
