Shawn Andre Benton
Shawn Andre Benton, 35, beloved son, adoring brother, loving father and loyal friend, departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in McKinney, Texas. He blessed many with his talents in the areas of manufacturing and television broadcasting. He was a member of New Morning Star Baptist Church in Moffett. His memories will forever be shared by his mother, Mary Ann Benton of McKinney, Texas, his father, James Ray Benton of Waukegan, Ill.; a daughter, Carshawnda Benton of Allen, Texas; two sisters, Karen Benton Triplett of Fort Smith and Tamara Benton of McKinney Texas; a brother, Daren Benton of McKinney, Texas; a niece and five nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and devoted friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Roland with his place of rest at Shady Grove (Lattimore) Cemetery in Roland under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
Pallbearers will be Eric Arnold, Cletus Perryman, Gary Carter, Bobby Wolford, Sam Henry and Jason Aspedon.
Honorary pallbearers will be James “Dino” Moton, Bertram Kimbrew, Vernell Benton, Rodney Reese, Maurice Johnson and Vincent Triplett.
Flowerbearers will be Lisa Bray, Melissa Perryman, Monique Arnold, Tina Benton, Brittney Youngblood and Shalene Benton.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home.

Bobby Joe “Smokey” Dean
Bobby Joe “Smokey” Dean, 72, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was retired from Whirlpool Corp. maintenance department, a member of the Baptist Church and an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Steep Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Bentz and her husband, Roger of Dallas; four sisters, Roberta Yermini of Eureka, Calif., Effie Campbell of Fort Smith, Joyce Fitts of Atlanta, Texas, and Doda Rye of Kileen, Texas; two brothers, Roland Dean of Jefferson, Texas, and M.A. Dean of Fort Worth, Texas; and four grandsons, Travis Robertson and Eric Bentz, both of Tulsa, Joshua Robertson of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jason Bentz of Dallas.
Pallbearers will be Jason and Roger Bentz, Joshua and Travis Robertson, Anthony White and Brandon Blake.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association Sebastian County Heart Unit, P.O. Box 1274, Fort Smith, AR 72902.

Charles Nelson Kester
Charles Nelson Kester, 88, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a retired carpenter for Local No. 71, a member of the Assembly of God, the Sebastian Lodge No. 706 and a Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. K. Kester.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Chareleen Montgomery of Fort Smith; a sister, Della Fink of Milwaukee; two grandchildren, Teresa McCarley of Greenwood and Pamela Ashby of Alma; and six great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Carolyn Nesbitt
Carolyn Ann Nesbitt, 71, of Fort Smith, formerly of El Dorado, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born Dec. 22, 1929, in McNeil. She was a homemaker, a member of Victory Baptist Church and the widow of Henry W. Nesbitt.
Graveside services were Nov. 7 at Sycamore Grove Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors of Distinction of El Dorado.
She is survived by two daughters, Nelda Johnson of Houston and Kay Grant of Fort Smith; two sons, Billy and Larry Nesbitt, both of El Dorado; and eight grandchildren.

Marvin Phelps
WALDRON — Marvin Edward Phelps, 85, of Waldron died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, the former president of the Bank of Waldron, Perry County Bank, Bank of Arkansas, Citizens Bank of Batesville and Merchants Bank of West Memphis, past member of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Sodie Davidson Park board, Waldron Country Club and several civic clubs and a member of Waldron Methodist Church.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive Cemetery in McKenzie, Tenn., under the direction of Brummitt Funeral Home of McKenzie, Tenn.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Edward Lynn Phelps of Waldron.
The body may be viewed 3 to 9 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home of Waldron.

Larry Gregory
POTEAU — Larry Gregory, 67, of Poteau died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Poteau. He was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Monroe. He was a retired accountant for Conoco, a member of Springhill Baptist Church and the Gideon’s International, volunteered tax work for AARP and served as a deacon at Sunset Baptist Church in Ponca City, Okla. He was the widower of Cleo Gregory.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church in Monroe with burial at Monroe Cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Christine; a daughter, Sheila Kay Gregory of Ponca City, Okla.; a son, J.B. Gregory of Norman, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Carla Terry of Howe; a sister, Lucrecia Lowrimore of Panama; a brother, Conrad Gregory of Poteau; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dewayne and Lyndel Gregory, Dale and Leon Lowrimore, Glendon Chester and Bill J. Barber.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon Bibles in Larry’s name, c/o Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.

Sylvia Dorsey
HUNTINGTON — Sylvia Rene Dorsey, 83, of Huntington died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker, a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Witcherville and the widow of Earl F. Dorsey.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Clarks Chapel Cemetery in Greenwood under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Sherrill of Dayton and JoAnn Fleener of Witcherville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James and Joshua Hiatt, Scott Welch, Michael Smith, Clifton Cusick, O.B. McKinney, Bill Gordon and Adron Howard.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Helen Adams
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Helen McIlvaigh Adams, 95, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Fort Wayne. She was a 1925 graduate of Van Buren High School, a 1927 graduate of Gulf Park Mississippi Junior College, a homemaker and the widow of William Seth Adams.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by three stepsons, the Rev. William Seth Adams of Austin, Texas, Jerry B. Adams of Conway and John A. Adams of Littleton, Colo.; seven stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Albert Withey
MENA — Albert Elias Withey, 81, of Mena died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Mena. He was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Tenino, Wash. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a plumber, active in Senior Citizens Center, a member of American Legion and of the Methodist faith. He was the widower of Lucile Chamblin Withey.
The body was sent for cremation under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by a daughter, Patrina Arlinea Withey of Salt Lake City; three sons, Richard Withey of Vancouver, Wash., Albert Lynn Withey of Chehalis, Wash., and Phillip Lee Withey of Anchorage, Alaska; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gussie Ramsey
Gussie Jean Melton Ramsey, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was retired from Sterling Store in Paris and Jarrard’s Auto Parts in Paris. She was the widow of Arthur Ramsey.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris with burial at Corely Cemetery in Paris.
She is survived by three sons, Richard Ramsey of Cecil, Kenneth Ramsey of Arkadelphia and Leroy Ramsey of Paris; a sister, Cynthia Joan Spinks of Concord; three brothers, Damon Melton of Hansford, Calif., James F. Melton of Derby, Kan., and Don Melton of Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a special friend, Hurd Barrington of Newman, Calif.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jimmy Bates
NORMAN, Okla. — Jimmy Dale Bates, 66, of Norman, Okla., formerly of Poteau, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Norman. He was born July 15, 1936, in Shady Point. He was a retired sixth-grade science teacher at Poteau Public Schools for a number of years, attended Front Street Church of Christ and was an Army veteran.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Evans & Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Old Bokoshe Cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Jimmy Bates of Washington, Okla.; a sister, Kathrine Guy of Lindsey, Okla.; four brothers, Harrell and Reve Bates, both of Panama, Jay Bates of Spiro and John Bates of Owasso, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Davis, Mike Kemp, Bob Blake, Lundy Kiger, A.J. Henson, Barry Henry, Jim Anderson and Louis Gill.

Calvin Wann
POTEAU — Calvin Coolidge “C.C.” Wann, 77, of Poteau died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Poteau. He was born May 28, 1925, in Bonneville. He was a retired owner of Wann Welding & Equipment Service, an active member of First Baptist Church in Poteau and the local Christian Businessman’s group.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Poteau with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Leta; a daughter, Debbie Wann of Tulsa; two sisters, Metal Balentine of Wister and Rutha Gatlin of El Centro, Calif.; and two brothers, Gaylord and Farmer Wann, both of Pocola.

Daniel Campbell
KIBLER — Daniel Campbell, 74, of Kibler died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in his home. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a former Civil Defense Director of Crawford County, a retired jailer for the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and retired from Covey Furniture Co.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gill Cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; a daughter, Danalene Porter of Van Buren; a son, Dan Campbell of Maggie Valley, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth Elliott and Barbara Sams, both of Watauga, Tenn.; two brothers, Howard Campbell of Minden, La., and Bob Campbell of Watauga, Tenn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Eugene Morse, David Plunkett, Bill Vickery, Robert Porter, Bill Grill and Mike Campbell.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Tyna Benedict
SALLISAW — Tyna E. Payne Benedict, 91, of Sallisaw died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Vian. She was a former educator in Texas and Oklahoma and taught at Broken Arrow Schools from 1933 to 1960, was of the Church of Christ faith and the widow of Phillip Benedict.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Vian Garden of Memories under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruby Holcomb of Blanchard, Okla., and Judy Bynum of Norman, Okla.
Pallbearers will be Brad and Adam Morris and John and M.D. “Red” Speer.
The body may be viewed 1 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leonard Lee “Barefoot” Faught
Leonard Lee “Barefoot” Faught, 99, of Ozark died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. Born March 8, 1903, at Deer, in Newton County, he was the son of the late Tom and Viola Faught. He came to Franklin County as a young boy, attending the Sulphur Springs School in the Jethro community, where he lived for a number of years before moving to Ozark. He married on Sept. 20, 1926, to Mary Elizabeth Davis the daughter of Dr. J.W. and Victoria Davis.
During the ‘30s and early ‘40s he was active in county politics, serving as county tax assessor for two terms. Later he was a local businessman, the owner of a furniture store and a restaurant. He retired as a skilled union carpenter.
He was a charter member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ozark, the Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years; an infant son, Cletus Lee; a sister, Ethel Plymale and five brothers, Homer, Harley, Charlie, Hoyt and Jack.
Survivors include his children, Peggy Richardson of Alma; Jerry and Valeria of Ozark and Jimmy of Dean Springs; a sister, Mabel Jean Angel of Fort Smith; a brother, Roy of Ozark; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Gar Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons and great-grandson. Honorary pallbearers will be the granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
