Ruby Turnbow
CHARLESTON — Ruby Turnbow, 92, of Charleston died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in a local hospital. She was born Sept. 29, 1909, in Altus. She was of the Missionary Baptist faith.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Parks Cemetery in Charleston under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Lavaca.
She is survived by a daughter, Faye Harrower of Charleston; a son, Delbert Turnbow of Victorville, Calif.; two sisters, Erma Jones of Tulsa and Blanche Rackley of Enid, Okla.; a brother, Jess Jackson of Muskogee, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jay and Cecil Harrower, Gary Magby, Ron Sarten, Gary McAllister and Brandon Magby.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Janis Hughes
Janie Crayton Hughes, 47, of Fort Smith, formerly of Melrose, Mass., died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in her home. She was a retired lead electronic operator for Compensated Devices Inc. of Melrose, Mass. She was a 1973 graduate of Southside High School and attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith.
A life celebration and Christian wake will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith. Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Fort Smith. The body was cremated.
She is survived by a sister, Julia Young of Van Buren; two brothers, John and Jeffrey Crayton, both of Fort Smith; a niece, Jennifer Neel, and a great-niece, Annabelle J. Neel, both of Crested Butte, Colo.
Memorial contributions may be made to Make A Wish Foundation.

Vermer Brown
Vermer Jean Talley Brown, 66, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, a deaconess, a member and director of Lydia Circle Choir, youth director, director of Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation in Hutchinson, Kan., and was employed at the student union at the University of Arkansas.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with burial at U.S National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, M.C. Brown; four daughters, Vickie Goodman, Madalyn Warren, Cheryl Anne Brown and Verna Renna Bell; a son, Terry Brown; her mother, Ocie Washington Saulsberry; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Keith Bell, Najee Goodman, Robert Warren, Rick and Andre Taylor, Demar Brown, Mike Robinson and Earl Chatman.

Geneva Hammond
CHARLESTON — Geneva Hammond, 85, of Charleston died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in a Greenhurst nursing home. She was born April 21, 1916, In Booneville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Charleston Chapter No. 16 and the Potts Freewill Baptist Church. She was the widow of Otha Hammond.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Garden of Memories in Charleston.
She is survived by a son, James Hammond of Charleston; four granddaughters, Susan Potts and April Edwards, both of Charleston, Patty Stiles of Branch and Carol Sparks of Fort Smith; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Karl and Karl Mark Potts, Mike and Michael Stiles and Brian and Bruce Womack.
The body may be viewed beginning at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star Charleston Chapter No. 16.

Edythe Virginia Janczar
Edythe Virginia Janczar, 81, of Roland died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and the widow of Stanley Janczar.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today in Cottonwood Freewill Baptist Church near Muldrow under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Muldrow. The body will be cremated.
She is survived by four daughters, Frances Janczar of Missouri, Teresa Kinnel of California, Virginia Fouquette of Nevada and Meredith Dyer of Oklahoma; a son, Stanley Joseph Janczar of Virginia; a sister, Barbara Ward of California; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Joni Mendenhall
Joni Mendenhall, 38, of Fort Smith died Friday, March 8, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Lupus Foundation.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby; two daughters, Mandi and Jessica Mendenhall, both of the home; her parents, John and Claudia Milam of Greenwood; two sisters, Connie Cross of Dayton, Nev., and Debbie Pound of Baton Rouge, La.; and a brother, Butch Pound of Jenny Lind.
Pallbearers will be Chris Morris, Mark and John Mendenhall, Johnny Anderson, Doug Kinslow, Randy and Kenny Milam and Britt Varner.

Frances E. Baker
Frances E. Baker, 87, of Fort Smith died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Catholic Keenagers, the Registered Nurses Association and Arkansas Catholic Professional Business Women. She was a retired registered nurse for St. Edward Mercy Medical Center and was retired from the Fort Smith Symphony.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Eddie Tucker of Fort Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Elaine Baker of Greenwood; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-graandchild.
Pallbearers will be Tracy, David and Todd Tucker and Brad, Blake and Brian Baker.

Veatrice Denney
Veatrice Denney, 75, of Fort Smith died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Fort Smith.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith. Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest; three sons, Gary and Bruce Denney, both of Fort Smith, and Mark Denney of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Phyllis Tobey of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Fred Duncan Jr. of Muncie and Ogle Duncan of Florida; and three grandchildren, Jeff, Amanda and Chris Denney.

Betty Johnson
FORT WORTH, Texas — Betty M. Johnson, 68, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Monday, March 11, 2002, in Fort Worth.
Funeral was held Tuesday in Martin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Granary, Texas, with burial at Holly Hills Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Victor; a daughter, Gaye Lynne Johnson of Weatherford, Texas; her mother, Agatha Jeffcoat of Lavaca; a sister, Joe Ann Outlaw of Warren; and a brother, Howard Jeffcoat of Lavaca.

Georgia Riddle
Georgia J. Riddle, 87, of Van Buren died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in a local hospital. She graduated from Van Buren High School in 1934. She was retired from Hayes & King and a member of Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren and a supporter of City Heights United Methodist Church in Van Buren. She was the widow of Orvie A. Riddle.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today in Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with private burial at Gracelawn Cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by a daughter, Jo Ellen Jones of Van Buren; two sisters, Almeda Tudor of Bakersfield, Calif. and Jane Warren of Collinsville, Ill.; two grandchildren, Becky Miller of Van Buren and Joe Ray Jones of Grayson, Ga.; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lyda Wilson
Lyda Ann Wilson, 27, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was born Oct. 11, 1974. She was employed with OK Foods.
The body was cremated under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Donnie Eugene Wilson of Fort Smith; her parents, Donna and Louis Haviland of Lamar; a sister, Crystal Winborn of Fort Smith; a brother, Wesley Winborn of Fort Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Ina Murray
Ina Glover Murray, 94, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Van Buren. She was a homemaker and a member of Goddard United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel of Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Phanita Williams of Fort Smith; two son, Jim Glover of Clarkdale, Miss. and George Glover of Fort Smith; a sister, Ruby Clark of Brookhaven, Miss.; a brother, Royce Griffith of Harbor City, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John W. Ayers, Pat Stanton, Ed Drimmel, Carl McCauley and Billy Bob Williams.

Rev. James Simpson
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Rev. James B. Simpson, 75, of Washington, D.C., died Monday, March 11, 2002, in Washington, D.C. He was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Mansfield. He was a former public relations account executive, author, journalist and priest. He attended Northwestern University, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and Nashota House Episcopal Seminary in Wisconsin. He was a member of the Cosmos Club and associated with two parishes, The Church of Ascension St. Agnes and All Souls. He was curate at Christ’s Church in Rye, N.Y., and Rector of Christ Church in Middletown, N.J.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today in the Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes under the direction of Joseph Gawler’s Sons Inc. in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by two sisters, Erleen Witherspoon of Jackson, Mich., and Billye Skinner of Homosassa, Fla.; two nieces and two nephews.

Ray Mathews
WEST MEMPHIS — Ray Mathews, 94, of West Memphis died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in Marion. He was born July 4, 1907, in Fort Smith. He was a retired door and sash carpenter and a member of First Baptist Church in West Memphis.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Baptist Church in Ozark with burial at Hampton Cemetery southeast of Ozark under the direction of Bob Neal & Sons Funeral Home of Morrilton.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sisters, Hilda Floyd and Ival Bigham; and two brothers, Bob and Gene Mathews.

Judy Shepard
Judy Marie Shepard, 50, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in her home. She was a homemaker and a member of The River of Life Pentecostal Church in Fort Smith.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. today in River of Life Pentecostal Church in Fort Smith with burial at Liberty Cemetery in Greenwood under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald; four daughters, Sheila and Schelie Schmutz, Shannon Hayes and Annetta Shores, all of Fort Smith; a son, Corey Schmutz of Fort Smith; her mother, Louella Harris of Fort Smith; four sisters, Betty Best of Lowell, Wanda Labbait of Yukon, Okla., Rita Walker of Hays, Kan., and Patsy Holzman of Clovis, Calif.; two brothers, Donnie and Earl Wayne Harris, both of Fort Smith; and 13 grandchildren.

Joe Newman
MANSFIELD — Joe Paul Newman, 73, of Mansfield died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in his home. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired construction worker and a member of Electrical Workers IBEW Local No. 700, the Shady Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Hackett.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Shady Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Hackett with burial at Monroe City Cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Hall of Franklin, Tenn.; a son, Kenneth Paul Newman of Poteau; three sisters, Owetta Carroll of Orlando, Fla., Mabel Woods and Wanda Peck, both of Monroe; a brother, Malvin Newman of Monroe; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy, Tony and Larry Joe Newman, Jeffrey Hall, Jim Carroll and Freddy and G.W. Stringer.
The body may be viewed 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
