Ruth Elizabeth McCollester Oakes
Ruth Elizabeth McCollester Oakes, 89, of Coles Chapel Community, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born Oct. 3, 1913, in California, Mo., in Moniteau County to Emmett Robert and Clara Elizabeth Bueker McCollester. She was the widow of Warren Wayne Oakes. She was confirmed in the Evangelical Church in California, Mo. The family moved to Franklin County in 1944 near Ratcliff, and soon joined the Coles Chapel Methodist Church. She was a active member of the Logan and Franklin County Home Demonstration Clubs, the PTA in the Ratcliff School. She and her husband, Warren operated Kirk’s Grill in Caulksville in the late 1950’s and the Bloomer Cafe in the late 1960’s. She was known for her fried chicken and apple cobblers. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, W.W. Oakes, a grandson, Robby Young and two great-grandsons, Lelan Warren and Cort Waine Young, one brother, Ray Franklin McCollester and brother-in-law, W.O. White Sr.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Coles Chapel Methodist Church with burial at Coles Chapel Cemetery south of Branch under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann and her husband, J.D. Young of the Coles Chapel Community; a sister, Dorothy May McCollester White of Roseville, Calif.; two brothers, E.R. McCollester Jr. and his wife, Annabeth McCollester of Fort Smith and W.B. McCollester and Kathryn McCollester of North Dartmouth, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Billie Weis of Roland; five grandchildren, Jay and his wife, Brenda Young, Steve and Lory Young, Luane and her husband, Britt Hatcher, Libby and her husband, Lewis Rangel; four great-granddaughters, Arie and Tori Hatcher, Olivia and Valarie Rangel; four great-grandsons Tyler, Jay Paul, Kyle and Levi Young.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Conkin, Dewayne Hopkins, Clinton Bottoms, Joe Clayton, Philip Coget and Ron LaChappelle.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler, Jay Paul and Kyle Young, Todd and Jimmie Patterson, Dwight and Sonny Cole.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Billy Key Burns
Billy Key Burns, 78, of Hartford died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in Talihina, Okla. He was a retired mechanic for Logan County Oklahoma, a Navy veteran and a veteran of World War II and a member of Faith Chapel in Hartford. He was preceded in death by one son, Bill L. Burns.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Chapel in Hartford with burial at Hartford Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Burns of the home; two brothers, Bob Burns of Oklahoma and Ed Burns of Perham, Minn.; also survived by extended family at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Talihina Division in Talihina, Okla.
Pallbearers will be Joey Moore, Hap, Steve and Chris Pitchford and Richie and Jonathan Brassfield.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Burleson, Bob Patterson and Lee Smith.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Maetta L. Jacobs
Maetta L. Jacobs, 64, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was the retired owner of Jacobs Piano and Organ and former co-owner of Hammond Organ Studio of Fort Smith. She was the former organist of Wood Memorial Christian Church of Van Buren, organist and choir director of First United Methodist Church of Van Buren and organist-cantor for the United Hebrew Temple of Fort Smith. She was a member and past matron of Liberty Chapter No. 402 of Eastern Star and past grand organist for the Grand Chapter of the Order of Easter Star of Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.E. “Ed” and Lucille Jacobs.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial of cremains at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her guardians, Pat and Rosemary Meyers of Fort Smith; two aunts, Rose Marie Karpierz of Liberty, Mo., and Sue Jacobs of Fort Smith; an uncle, Louis Ricatto of San Clemente, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, c/o The Mercy Foundation or Development, 7301 Rogers Ave., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Max W. Ross
Max W. Ross, 97, of Van Buren died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born April 3, 1905, in Danville. She was a former employee of Ward’s Furniture, a member of Maple Shade Church of the Nazarene and the widow of Leo Ross.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial at New Berry Chapel Cemetery in Alma.
She is survived by three daughters, Juanita Spruill of Oklahoma City, Launita Certain of Elk City, Okla., and Virginia Sooter of Gentry; two sons, Clyde B. Ross of Alma and Earl Ross of Cookson, Okla.; 17 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Andy and Jon Ross, Jason and Joel Boen and Larry Spruill.

Gerald Campbell
Gerald Campbell, 63, of Mountainburg died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in his home. He was born May 18, 1939, in Bidville. He was a cattleman and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Locke Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Bidville Cemetery in Crawford County under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by two daughters, Lee Ann Bowline and Kelly Campbell, both of Alma; three sisters, Geneva Shepherd of Sunset Community, Josephine Reed of Mountainburg and Lois Holt of Ringold, Ga.; three brothers, Bill, Thurman and Denver Campbell, all of Locke.
Pallbearers will be Clyde and Ivan Moore, Dick Ray Douglas, Duke Campbell James Dollard, Larry Jackson and Randy Beller.

John William Porter
John William Porter, 89, of Alma died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in a local nursing home. He was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Dyer. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Dyer Methodist Church, the DAV and was a retired farmer.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Alma with burial at Dyer Cemetery in Dyer.
He is survived by a sister, Hazel Brown of Alma; and a brother, Stewart Porter of Alma.
Pallbearers will be Bill Molder, Joel Dyer, J.W. and Glen Porter, Mike Brown and Claude Hatley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dathan, Berry and Kerry Molder, Jake Dyer, Gene, Steve, Joe and Danny Porter, Tom House, Louis McFarland and Raymond and Bob Brown.
The family will visit with friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Miss Lois Gale Hudson
Miss Lois Gale Hudson, 55, of Alma died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in a local nursing home. She had been the body shop manager for Jones Nissan in Little Rock and was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Alma. Miss Hudson had also served briefly in the U.S. Army.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren, with burial at Locke Cemetery in the Locke Community near Mountainburg.
She is survived by her mother, Altha Carlton of Alma; a sister, Billie Jean Harvey of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Alfred Dwayne Hudson of Alma; an aunt, Ruby Coulter of Dyer; and four nieces and nephews, Debbie Saunders of Waldron, Robert Harvey of Winslow, Becky Lynch of Fayetteville and Kathy Jamison of Van Buren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty Louise Petway
Betty Louise Petway, 75, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Fort Smith.
She was a homemaker and the widow of Glenn H. Petway.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Glenda and husband Don Burris of Fort Smith, Belinda L. Petway of Mountainburg and Mary “Andy” and Michael Baxley of Little Rock.; a sister, Billie Melba Sharum of Fort Smith; three grandchildren, Angela Hartwig, Adam Burris and Colin Baxley; and three great grandchildren, Taylor and Shelby Hartwig and Kevin Burris.

Vernon “Bugs” Herman Beavers, 78, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Fort Smith.He was a retired plant manager for Sierra Corporation and an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was the widower of Gladys M. Beavers.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by two daughters, Jean Hawkins of Fort Smith and Sandy Hunter of Barling; a son, Charles Beavers of Fort Smith; a sister, Helen Shibley of Roland; a brother, Prince Beavers of Van Buren; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Robert Leslie
Robert Earl Leslie, 53, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at a local hospital. He was a salesman for Cardinal Motors and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Putman Funeral Home with burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Hackett.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; two stepsons, Chris McFeeters of Fort Smith and Alex McFeeters of Fort Smith; and one grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Chris and Alex McFeeters, Paul Martin and Kevin Mann.
The body may be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roger Ransom
Roger F. Ransom, 75, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Tulsa, Okla.
He was a retired route salesman for Hiland Dairy, a member of Belle Point Masonic Lodge No. 20 F&AM and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Western Arkansas and an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Robbie Ransom of Fayetteville; and a brother, Billy Ransom of Richardson, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Bill Kilgore, Johhny Gallagher, Larry Williams, Howard Tillery, Lawrence Mirus and Mike Sexton.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nathan Bennett
VIAN — Nathan Bennett, 73, of Vian died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Gore.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Garden of Memories in Vian under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by two daughters, Dianne Faulkner of Oklahoma City and Judy Morris of Tennessee; three sons, Delbert Bennett of Kentucky, James and Tom Bennett, both of Oklahoma City; three sisters, June Petty of Fort Gibson, Okla., Virginia Swimmer of Vian and Norma Roach of Lost City, Okla.; three brothers, Bruton Bennett of Bartlesville, Okla., Fay Bennett of Ramona, Okla., and Robert Bennett of Vian; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bob, Roy and Matthew Bennett, Alan Mahaney, Edward Stowe and Leslie Owens.

Lucille Partin
LAMAR — Lucille Byers Partin, 81, of Lamar died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was school teacher for one year at Hector, worked 20 years at Frank’s Cafe, six years at South Park Restaurant and nine years at Teeter’s Family Steakhouse.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Lamar Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by a daughter, Romona Ogden of Lamar; a sister, Julia Singleton of Chandler, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Richardson, Marty Tumbleson, Jason Wadley, Alvie Joe Hollon, Ryan and Drew Ragsdale.
