Olis Tolbert
OZARK — Olis Lee Tolbert, 65, of Ozark died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in a Paris hospital. He was a retired live turkey hanger with Cargill and a member of the Hills Chapel Christian Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Cemetery Ridge south of Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Etta Tolbert; a daughter, Melinda Umholtz of Ozark; two sons, Randy and Lindell Tolbert, both of Ozark; three sisters, Mina Spessard, Lorene Smith and Modine Sutherland, all of Ozark; and two stepgrandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Morris Phillips
ALMA — Morris Phillips, 61, of Alma died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Alma. He was a self-employed painting contractor.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Alma.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Coffman, of Borger, Texas; two sons, Alfred Morris Phillips of Charleston and Gary Wayne Phillips of Boston; two sisters, Edith Lee of Georgiana, Ala., and Jeanette Duffle of Panama City, Fla.; five grandchildren.

Betty Gomes
BANNING, Calif. — Betty Jean Gomes, 58, of Banning died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in Palm Springs, Calif. She was a waitress for 30 years and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at Evans Cemetery in Excelsior.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Ray Gomes; three daughters, Michelle Fletcher of Whittier, Calif., and Sheryl Porter and Elizabeth Fletcher, both of Hartford; a stepdaughter, Stacy Gomes of La Mirada, Calif.; four sons, Michael, David and Gary Fletcher, all of Greenwood, and Jon Fletcher of Hartford; a stepson, Steve Gomes of La Mirada, Calif.; two sisters, Nancy Perkins and Brenda Layne, both of Hartford; three brothers, Allen Trantham of Montreal, Bill Trantham of Paramount, Calif., and Danny Trantham of Hartford; 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Greg, David, Jon and Mike Fletcher, Steve Gomes and Jesse Montez.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Alma Clark
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Alma O. Clark, 92, of Murfreesboro died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in Murfreesboro. She was the widow of John J. “Jeff” Clark, having served with him in a number of Methodist churches across North Arkansas until retiring in Fort Smith in 1968.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cavanaugh United Methodist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by a son, Gale Clark of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Velma Fallis of Konawa, Okla., and Mae Clifft of Mountain Home; a brother, James Robertson of Palm Harbor, Fla.
The family will visit with friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cavanaugh United Methodist Church in Fort Smith or First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Betty Jane Pittman Miller
Betty Jane Pittman Miller, 76, of Central City died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Central City.
She was born April 14, 1926, in Fort Smith to Otis and Ruby Roberts Pittman. She was a retired first grade teacher, a member of the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club and the National Education Association. She was a Protestant. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral was Saturday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Parks Cemetery in Charleston.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; three daughters, Carol Foley of Fort Smith, Jane Garcia of Fort Smith and Ruth Adams of Atlanta; three stepdaughters, Sandra Miller Hayes of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Speer of Charleston and Lynn Bartholomew of Fredricksburg, Va.; four sons, David Flatte of Pea Ridge, John Flatte of Conway, Russell Flatte of Staunton, Va., and Warren Flatte of Fort Smith; a stepson, A.E. “Tom” Miller of Charleston; a sister, Shirley Haggard of Fort Smith; 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren and three step-great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Max Ulrich, Robert Ulrich, Britt Ulrich, Roma Lee Brittain, Ken Lawson and Fred Garcia.
Honorary pallbearers were Earl Bredernitz and Mike Dobbs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Diabetes Foundation of the Audubon Society of America.

Flora Higginbotham
Flora Higginbotham, 65, of Hackett died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in her home. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Higginbotham.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive Cemetery in Midland under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Luna and Teresa Shoemake, both of Hackett; two sisters, Hazel Cameron of Greenwood and Beulah Jones of Arkoma; a brother, Lester Taylor of Midland; and four grandchildren, Steven and wife Esmeralda, Brian, Crystal and Kimberly.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Nellie Southern
Nellie Southern, 97, of Spiro died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Spiro. She was a lifelong resident of LeFlore County.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Milton Cemetery in Bokoshe under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Ellen Peerson of Greenwood; nieces, Rita Woolsey of Hackett, Josephine Brown of Panama, Vicky Copher of Fort Smith, Marilyn Chambers and Carolyn Davis, both of Yukon, Okla., and Verna Dorr of Mineral Wells, Texas; nephews, Jim Bill Peerson and Wayne Peerson, both of Fort Smith, Buck Hamby of Hackett, Philip Hamby of Spiro, Orville Peerson of Bokoshe and Donald and Jim Peerson, both of California.

James A. Spears
James A. Spears, 76, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a retired financial controller for Coleman Inc., a former member and Sunday School teacher at Phoenix Village Baptist Church, a member of East Side Baptist Church, a volunteer for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and a veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of the home; two daughters, Jeanette Taylor of Fort Smith and Julie Lamb of Tulsa; a son, James A. Spears Jr. of Fort Smith; two sisters, Mildred Williams of Witcherville and Barbara Thames of Wagoner, Okla.; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Madden, Lori Champion, Christopher Lamb and Lindsey Spears.
Pallbearers will be Terry Madden, John Farrar, Ron McGrew, Mike Eurchett, Ted Neal and Allen Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Duncan, Dennis Capps, Dwight Perryman, Danny Peters, Jerry Rothwell and George McClendon.

Steven A. Syrock, 40, of Van Buren died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in his home. He was the retired manager of Guard Tronics and a member of Bethlehem Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Allison Cemetery in Muldrow.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Rainwater Syrock; a daughter, Hannah Syrock of the home; a sister, Sherry Clees of Albuquerque, N.M.
Pallbearers will be Paul, Kenny and David Summerhill, Terry Syrock, Robert and Larry White and Tommy Don Wilson.

John W. Carty
John W. Carty, 76, of Mulberry died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired teacher and administrator for Chaffin and Darby Junior High Schools in Fort Smith, having also served in the same capacities in the Ozark, Mulberry and Rudy school districts as well as Fairbury, Ill. He was a Naval veteran of World War II, a member of Mulberry United Methodist Church, Mulberry Lions Club and Arkansas Teachers Association and the Arkansas Farm Bureau.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mulberry United Methodist Church with a private burial to be held Thursday under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Marquita Carty of Fort Smith; three stepsons and daughters-in-law, Boyce and Cindy Wofford of Alma, Tom and Marissa Wofford of Alma and Richard and Brigitte Wofford of Santiago, Chile; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ralph Eubanks of Little Rock and a sister, Mary Carty of Mulberry; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Marilyn Carty of Collinsville, Okla.; two grandchildren, Chris and Megan Carty, both of Fort Smith; and 10 stepgrandchildren, Jerry, Jake, Austin and Zack Wofford of Alma, Kristin and Noah Wofford of Alma, Emily and Hannah Wofford of Little Rock and Marc and Lauren Wofford of Santiago, Chile.

Mary Julia Stevenson
Mary Julia Stevenson, 54, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Nov. 26, 1948, in Brattleboro, Vt. She moved to Fort Smith at the age of 13. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2001. She was a member of the American Postal Workers Union Local No. 1211. She was a past member of Faith Assembly of God where she taught Sunday school and was active in Women’s Ministries and now is a member of Harvest Time Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert O. Johnson Sr. of Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Gale Dean Rainwater of Fort Smith; three brothers, Robert O. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Delia of Jacksonville, Stanley Johnson and his wife, Karen of Rogers and Russell Johnson and his wife, Aida of Schertz, Texas; two granddaughters, Julia and Victoria Rainwater, both of Fort Smith; three nieces, Michelle Gibson, Emily Edmondson and Lisa Terry.
Pallbearers will be Doyle, Paul, Eric and Lance Rainwater, Doug Huber and Chris Lamberson.

She is survived by a brother, Ben Jones of Van Buren; several nieces and nephews.

AUGUSTA, Kan. — David Lee Taylor, 70, of Augusta, Kan., formerly of Fort Smith, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003. He was a retired machinist from Boeing in Wichita, Kan.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta, Kan.
He is survived by four daughters, Diana Pierce of Augusta, Kan., Laura Walters of Shell Lake, Wis., Pamela Robinson of Wichita, Kan., and Jennifer Limon of Cedarville; two sons, Greg Taylor of Weleetka, Okla., and Douglas Taylor of Chicken Creek, Okla.; two sisters, Judy Perkins of Meade, Kan., and Jan Taylor Raisen of Grafaton, Wis.; two brothers, Raymond Taylor of Wichita, Kan. and Billy Taylor of Chicken Creek, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Sandra Taylor of Wichita, Kan.
