David McConnell
David McConnell, 49, of Fort Smith passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in his home. He was of the Methodist faith and worked as a volunteer for the Fort Smith Visitor’s Center at Miss Laura’s. He was preceded in death by his father, Dwight K. McConnell. He was born Aug. 28, 1954, in Fort Smith. He worked in the retail business.
Burial of cremains and graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Gene McConnell of Fort Smith; sister, Jill Otts of Fort Smith; niece, Elizabeth Reed of Fayetteville; and uncle, Buddy McDole of Sand Springs, Okla.

Richard E. Mahl
Richard E. Mahl, 75, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Ratcliff to Joe Mahl and Rebecca Stubblefield Mahl. He was retired from Whirlpool, a two-year Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Barling, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Barling with burial at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Caulksville under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Molly Mahl of the home; three stepdaughters, Marsha Gonzalez and husband Renato of Deland, Fla., Cheryl Cantrell of Columbia, Md., and Rhonda Cantrell of Fort Smith; a stepson, Barry Cantrell and wife Marcia of Palatka, Fla.; two sisters, Gladys Wald of Charleston and Josephine Schmalz of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Clark and Mark Schmalz, Roger Sublett, Barry Cantrell, Steve Core and Renato Gonzalez. Honorary pallbearers will be Taylor Landthrip, Raymond Becker and the men of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Betty Kinsey
BARLING — Betty Ann Kinsey, 59, of Barling died Friday, July 23, 2004, in Van Buren. She was a member of Windsor Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held by the family at 1 p.m. Saturday at Birta Cemetery in Ola. The body will be cremated. Arrangements under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by a sister, Judy Bettes of Alexander.

Jack Perrien
SPRINGDALE — Jack William Perrien, 74, of Springdale died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. He was a retired carpenter and a member of First Baptist Church in Lavaca.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Lavaca. Arrangements by the Cremation Service of Arkansas. Obituary submitted by North Little Rock Funeral Home of North Little Rock.
He is survived by two sons, Timothy Perrien of Rogers and Michael Perrien of Fayetteville; three sisters; two brothers; and a grandchild.

Barbara Hatley
EUFAULA, Okla. — Barbara Farrell Hatley, 66, of Eufaula died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. She was born Dec. 11, 1937, in Figure Five. She was a homemaker and the widow of James Hatley.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Fort Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of Hunn, Black & Merritt Funeral Home of Eufaula, Okla.
She is survived by five daughters, Faye Bowman of Tulsa, Karen Zolliecoffer and Liz Carpenter, both of Fort Smith, Pam Wylie of Van Buren and Anita Brooks of Eufaula, Okla.; two sons, Jim Biggs of Stigler and First Sgt. Mark Hatley of Tulsa; two sisters, Liddie Wilhelm and Beatrice Turner; four brothers, William, James, Jimmy and Georgie Turner; 26 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Marcia Thiele
Marcia Mead Thiele, 78, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. She was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Albany, N.Y. She attended the University of Arizona graduating with a degree in home economics; worked for I. Magnin of San Francisco, Bendix Corp. and Whirlpool; was the first woman executive in company history serving as director of Home Services, was involved in the Girls Shelter, Girl Scouts, the Voluntary Action Center, the Committee of 100 of the Ozark Folk Center, Sparks Women’s Board, PTA, youth programs at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith where she was a member and elder, served as director of Fort Smith Lincoln Day Care Center, and helped establish the Fountain of Youth Adult Day Care Center.
A celebration of life will be 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith. The body will be cremated and will be interred at the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; two daughters, Margaret Thiele of Fort Smith and Elizabeth Theile of Boston; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 116 N. 12th St., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

William Staggs
RUDY — William Stanley Staggs, 91, of Rudy died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in his home. He attended the Freedom Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Center Point Cemetery near Waldron under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by a daughter, Wilma Shores of Alma; a son, Jess Staggs of Van Buren; a sister, Esther Hall of California; a brother, Roy Staggs of California; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Walley Fortner
HEAVENER — Walley Lee Fortner, 68, of Heavener died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in Heavener. He attended Heavener First Baptist Church and was a Korean War veteran.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener.
He is survived by a son, Russell Fortner of Fayetteville; three sisters, Betty Jennings of Oklahoma City, Marlene Andrews of Garland, Texas, and Gracie Fortner of Dallas; five brothers, Leon Fortner of Oklahoma City, Earl Fortner of Zoe, Okla., Henry Fortner of Dallas, Gary Fortner of Little Rock, and Derrell Fortner of Tulsa; and two grandchildren.

Flora Hester
ASH FLAT — Flora Marie “Jane” Hester, 88, of Ash Flat died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Little Rock. She was born June 17, 1916, near Tahlequah, Okla. She was a farm worker in California, a maintenance worker at Los Angeles schools, and a Baptist.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Paw Paw Cemetery southeast of Muldrow under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Muldrow.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Shackelford of Ash Flat and Carol Robinson of Dover; two sons, Donald Duvall of Muldrow and Tom Baker of California; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Leroy Taylor
Leroy Taylor, 48 of Fort Smith, formerly of Chatham, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Arkansas. He was born Oct. 19, 1955, in Pittsylvania County, Va. He was employed by Southern Steel & Wire Co. in Arkansas and was a former member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Chatham, Va.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Chatham, Va., with burial at the church cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Gretna, Va.
He is survived by his father, John Taylor of Chatham, Va.; a sister, Phyllis Walker of Martinsville, Va.; two brothers, Larry Taylor of Ridgeway, Va., and Ralph Taylor of Fort Smith; and his fiancee, Marquett Wilson, and two children, Michael and Michelle.
The family will receive friends at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his father, 1516 Mill Creek Road in Chatham, Va.

John Trent
John David Trent, 37, of Fort Smith, formerly of Seattle, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a machinist with Air Systems Inc., a veteran of the Marine Corps, and a graduate of Starkville Academy in Starkville, Miss.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Muldrow. The body was cremated under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his grandparents, Dean and Mavis Brock of Oceanena, Calif.; and three brothers, Adam Trent of Manteca, Calif., Brian Sealey of Roland, and Scott Sealey of Portland, Ore.
Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop No. 773 in Muldrow.

Mrs. Vesta Shirley Higdon
Mrs. Vesta Shirley Higdon, 96, of Mulberry died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in a local nursing home. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught in the Fort Smith, Alma and Altus school systems. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mulberry and a member of the Crawford County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Higdon was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Raymond Higdon; and a grandson, Jimmy Higdon.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Mulberry under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
A daughter, Molly Dickerson of Mulberry; a son, John Higdon of Hannibul, Mo.; a sister, Jean Palmer of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren survive her.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home, 4100 Alma Highway in Van Buren.

Mary E. Stanley Frye
Mary E. Stanley Frye, 83, of Bonanza passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in her home. She born Aug. 5, 1921, in Batesville to Bob and Rhoda Gilbert. She was a member of the Van Burn Gospel Rescue Mission. She was a 20-year senior advocate in helping and serving the community. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William B. Stanley Sr. and William J. Frye. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Flowers of Bonanza; son, William “Bill” Stanley Jr. of Springdale; sister, Virginia Balloun of Dardanelle; brother, Ray Gilbert of Fort Smith; three grandsons, Doug and William “Stan” Stanley and Joe Young Jr.; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the U.S. National Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Van Buren Gospel Rescue Mission, 201 Drennen, Van Buren, AR 72956.

Callie Williams
Callie Mae Williams of Fort Smith died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a member of First Church of God and retired from Southern Steel & Wire Co.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion C.M.E. Church with burial at Washington Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a companion, Samuel Stringer of Fort Smith; three daughters, Jeanette Watson, Gail and Tracy Deering, all of Fort Smith; a son, Robert Marks of Fort Smith; her mother, Virginia London of Rolling Fork, Miss.; stepmother, Inez Keys of Fort Smith; four sisters, Otha London and Debbie Parker, both of Chicago, Carolyn Richardson of Rolling Fork, Miss., and Deloise Johnson of Fort Smith; seven brothers, David Marks of St. Louis, Otis and Clarence Marks and Robert London, all of Memphis, Tommy London of Fort Smith, Johnny London of Washington and Connie Hawkins of Virginia; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Olish and Cecil Perkins, Ronald Webb, Sammy Price, Herbert Alston, Darrell and Chris Cross and Michael Stevenson.
A wake will be held at 6 p.m. today at Mount Zion C.M.E. Church.

Kim Teague
Kim Z. Teague, 42, of Van Buren died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 2, 1961, in Oklahoma City. She worked at Beckham Nutrition Center and was a member of First Baptist Church in Van Buren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Ronnie; a daughter, Crystal Teague of Long Grove, Okla.; five sons, Joseph, Andrew and Jeremy Teague, Randy Beesley and Kenny Barnett, all of Van Buren; her mother, Alva Walley of Van Buren; a sister, Pam Osborne of Vian; two brothers, J.L. Walley of Oklahoma City and Joe Walley of Fort Smith; and two grandchildren.
