Betty June Manning
Betty June Manning, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend died at home with her children by her side early Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 2004, in Seattle. Mother will be buried next to the love of her life, Frank Manning, at the Elcho Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004.
Mother’s exact date of birth remains a mystery. Some documents say she was born on June 27, 1929, others state June 27, 1930. Given she always told everyone that she was “29 and holding,” the exact year probably doesn’t matter. She was the daughter of Donald Franklin McCabe and Antoninette Marie (“Mom” to all who knew her) McCabe. Mother and her nine siblings grew up in a small home on Enterprise Lake Road west of Elcho, Wis.
On June 28, 1947, Mother married Patrick Stevens (who died in 1977). During the 1950s and ’60s, she gave birth to 12 children. Many will also remember Mother as a gracious and affable waitress at Blackjack Supper Club and Riverview Country Club in the 1960s and early ’70s. She later attended Culinary Arts School and taught cooking and commercial baking in Wausau, Wis. After moving to Concord, Calif., in 1979, she worked as a teaching assistant for special needs children. Frank and Mother were married Dec. 28, 1979. The couple was managing two farms in Huntington when Frank died on Jan. 22, 1990.
Betty Manning is survived by her sister, Patricia McKinney-Rice, who lives in Antigo, Wis.; and brothers Harold “Bud” McCabe of Crown Pointe, Ind. and Robert McCabe of Joliet, Ill. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine “Babe” Corbeille of Racine, Wis., and brothers, Russell McCabe, Chester “Chet” McCabe, Donald “Mick” McCabe and Floyd McCabe of Elcho, Wis., and brother Charles “Chuck” McCabe of Clinton, Iowa.
Mother has nine surviving children, Linda Stephens of Seattle, Patrick “Rick” Stevens of Wittenberg, Wis., Donald Stevens of Green Bay, Wis., Mark Stevens of Kenosha, Wis., David Stevens of Athens, Wis., Deborah Peacock of Nashville, Tenn., Jim Stevens of Kenosha, Kelly Stevens of Seattle, and Ellen Hawkins of Fort Smith. She was also the stepmother of Sharon Stevens of Green Bay and Gary Manning of Peoria, Ariz. Three of her children preceded her in death; a set of premature twins died shortly after they were born, and her son Peter died in a tragic accident in 1961.
Mother dearly loved and will be greatly missed by each of her 24 grandchildren: Sarah Fike, Joy, Kendyll and Emmaleigh Hawkins, Sherry Hynes, Brandon Manning, Stephanie, Michelle and Melissa Peacock, Brelinda, Brian, Elizabeth, Franklin, Jennifer, Mark Jr., Marrick, Michael, Patrick, Peter, Robin Yount, Thomas, and David “Kokomo” Stevens, Nicholas Stephens, and Amy Vasquez.
In her final years, mother took great joy in the time she was able to spend with her five great-grandchildren: Connor Fike, Elizabeth, Hannah and Ethan Hynes, and Peyton Vasquez.
Mother also leaves behind many wonderful friends in Wisconsin, California, Arkansas and Washington, but none she loved more than Esther Bloedorn of Antigo, Wis., her precious friend for more than 40 years.
A visitation will be offered on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Strasser Funeral Home, 504 Edison St. in Antigo. A memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Graveside service will immediately follow at the cemetery in Elcho, Wis.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Ghormley of Fort Smith and Pattie Leonard of Greenwood; a son, Roger Ghormley of Tulsa; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
