James Watson Vestal
James Watson Vestal, 82, of Frankfort, Ky., formerly of Owensboro, Ky., passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in a Frankfort hospital. Born in Warren to the Rev. William Richard and Ibra Vestal, he served in the 3196 Signal Corps during the European campaign in World War II, before graduating from the University of Arkansas. He retired from Texas Gas Transmission Corp. after 33 years. He was an original member of the Four Flames barber shop quartet and sang with the Owensboro Choral Arts Guild. He was a charter member of the Go-Getters Sunday school class, which he taught for 26 years at First Baptist Church in Owensboro. He also served as the church’s moderator, chairman of deacons and finance committee chairman, and was a member of the choir. His wife of 57 years, Marjorie Eastham Vestal, and a brother, Franklin G. Vestal, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jim Wood of Frankfort; a son, James William Vestal; a brother, Richard Vestal of North Little Rock; four grandchildren, Jami (Brian) Cooper, Melissa (David) Mills, Sam Williams and Elizabeth Wood; and three great-grandchildren, Will and Wesley Cooper and Sydney Mills.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Third Baptist Church under the direction of Glenn Funeral Home of Owensboro.
The family wishes that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the memorial fund at Third Baptist Church, Owensboro; Immanuel Baptist Church “Forward in Faith” Fund, 1075 Collins Lane, Frankfort, KY 40601; or Baptist Seminary of Kentucky Scholarship Fund c/o Baptist Seminary of Kentucky, 150 E. High St., Lexington, KY.

Louise Frazier
MINEOLA, Texas — Louise Frazier, 86, of Mineola, formerly of Fort Smith, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Mineola. She was a member of Midland Heights Methodist Church in Fort Smith and worked as a pastry cook for Wyatt’s and Luby’s Cafeterias. She was the widow of Loy Frazier.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park Cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Frazier of Warner-Robins, Ga.; a son, Dr. Loy Frazier of Mineola; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Stanley
Myrtle Stanley, 89, of Fort Smith died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in a local hospital. She was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Sulphur, Okla. She was a member of Spradling Baptist Church and a former employee of Wortz Biscuit Co.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Spradling Baptist Church with burial at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two sons, Don Tadlock and Dan Stanley Jr., both of Fort Smith; a brother, Cecil Anderson of Belton, Mo.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be J.T. Hesselrode, Casey Adams, Larry and Mike Chandler, Bob Hutain and Jimmy Lessley.
The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elmer Hurd
RUDY — Elmer Hurd, 91, of Rudy died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in a local nursing home. He was a woodcutter, a champion boxer in Madison Square Garden in New York, a champion bronco rider, an auto mechanic and a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount McCurry Cemetery near Rudy under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by a daughter, Jean Richardson of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; a sister, Lorene Hurd of Missouri; two brothers, Charles and Floyd Hurd, both of Missouri.

Vera Magby
CHARLESTON — Vera Christine Magby, 91, of Charleston died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was born Aug. 30, 1913, in Gainesville, Texas, and was the widow of Lee Magby.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Branch Assembly of God with burial at Morgan Hill Cemetery southwest of Ozark under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Cass of Lavaca; three sons, Howard Magby of Pocola, Ronnie Magby of Charleston and Robert Magby of Branch; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike, Gary and Brandon Magby, David and James Seaton and Richard Abbott.
The body may be viewed beginning at 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Wilma Willis
Wilma Jean Willis, 72, of Van Buren died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal Faith. She was the widow of Gervis Willis.
She is survived by three daughters, Lonnah Curry of Mansfield, Texas, Sharon Miller of Van Buren and Pam Hodges of Sallisaw; four sons, Forrest Willis of Houston, Tommy Willis of Roland and Mike and Ronnie Willis, both of Muldrow; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the Highland Cemetery in Ozark.
Pallbearers will be Lonnie Hawkins Sr., Lonnie Hawkins Jr., Paul Brunk, Justin and Scott Willis and Jamison Corley.

Wilson Briley
Wilson D. Briley, 81, of Fort Smith died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was a master plumber and owner and operator of Briley Plumbing. He was of the Baptist faith and an Army veteran serving during World War II.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by a sister, Polly Renfroe of Exeter, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Reynolds Cancer Support House, 3224 S. M St., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Bill Rankin
HARTFORD — Bill Rankin, 74, of Hartford died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in a local hospital. He was a retired machinist.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Cemetery in Hartford under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
He is survived by a son, Ron Rankin of Hartford; a sister, Patsy Johnson of Barling; and two brothers, Jim Rankin of Fort Smith and Bob Rankin of Greenwood.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Austin Carter
MENA — Austin Lance Carter, infant son of Aaron and Heather Carter of Mena, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Mena.
Graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Cherry Hill under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents Kirk and Doris Carter of Mena; maternal grandmother Jennifer Zielie of Mena; paternal great-grandparents Doyle and Lillian Carter of Mena, Jo McAnally of Wills Point, Texas, and John Stanley and Susie McAnally of Plano, Texas; and maternal great-grandparents Jim and Maria Evans of Mena.

Jeanie Watson
OZARK — Jeanie Appleberry Watson, 60, of Ozark died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in a local hospital. She was born May 7, 1944, in Tiller and grew up in McGehee. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Arkansas and earned a master’s degree in reading from the University of Central Arkansas. She taught for 24 years at Cass Job Corps and was a member of Ozark First United Methodist Church. She was a member of Ozark First United Methodist Church and completed the Stephen Ministries program in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shaffer Funeral Home in Ozark with burial at Highland Cemetery in Ozark.
She is survived by a daughter, Kim Togan of Ozark; a son, Joe Watson of Ozark; her parents, Russell and Juanita Appleberry of Ozark; a sister, Sylvia Chapman of Ozark; and one grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Vernon McDaniel, Bill Wald, Milton Lamar, Bill Bailey, Jesse James III, Rod Perkins, Stan Ott and Stone Faulkenberry.
Honorary pallbearers will be the students of Cass Job Corps.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ozark First United Methodist Church TV Ministries, 503 W. Commercial, Ozark, AR 72949.

Jeanie Appleberry Watson
Jeanie Appleberry Watson, 60, of Ozark died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at St. Edward hospital in Fort Smith. Born in Tiller on May 7 ,1944, she grew up in McGehee. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, she spent her first year of teaching at Woodland High School in Fayetteville, then moved to Ozark over Christmas break in 1969 where she taught at Ozark Junior High School for four years. After finishing her master’s degree in reading from the University of Central Arkansas, she taught for one more year at Ozark Middle School. In September 1980 she took a teaching position at Cass Job Corps and remained there until her retirement in December 2004. She was a member of the Ozark First United Methodist Church and completed the Stephen Ministries program in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Toby Hogan; her son, Bill Watson; her parents, Russell and Juanita Appleberry; one sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Irving Chapman; one granddaughter, Hayley Hogan; nephew Tracy Chapman and family Lucretia and Dakota Chapman, all of Ozark; and nephey Tony Chapman of Irving, Texas.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark officiated by Edward Wyers and Ron Newberry with burial at Highland Cemetery in Ozark. Pallbearers will be Vernon McDaniel, Bill Wald, Milton Lamar, Bill Bailey, Jesse James III, Rod Perkins, Stan Ott and Stone Faulkenberry. Honorary pallbearers will be Barbara Garner, Erika May, Kathlyn Anderson, Linda Grom, Lena Ellison, Alicia Chesshir, Brandi Harris, Martha Highfill and the students of Cass Job Corps.

Wilson D. Briley
Wilson D. Briley, 81, of Fort Smith died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was a master plumber and owner and operator of Briley Plumbing. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the Army serving during World War II.

Funeral service was held Monday at 1 p.m. at Fentress Mortuary Chapel with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park, all under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.

John T. Matthews
John T. Matthews, 73, of Lavaca died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born Feb. 22, 1932, in Marlow, Okla. He was a former owner of Port City Commercial Warehouse, a Korean War Navy veteran, a member of Central Christian Church and a pilot instructor. He was preceded in death by four siblings, Kathleen, George, Leslie and Glena Mae; and his parents, James and Lillian Matthews. Death is not extinguishing the light, it is putting out the lamp before the dawn has come.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine K. of the home; three daughters, Renae Selix and husband Jerry of Lavaca, Tamra Johnson and husband Ron of Las Vegas, and Collette Haga and husband James of Fort Smith; four sons, John D. Matthews and wife Cheryl of Honolulu, Dwayne Matthews and wife Kathy of Yukon, Okla., Joe Matthews and wife Christina of Reed Springs, Mo., and Bill Matthews and wife Kathy of Fort Smith; five sisters, Edna Wilkinson of Marlow, Okla., Mary Helen Fincher and husband Albert of Marlow, Juanita Clark and husband Bill of Burns Flat, Okla., Kathy George and husband Ed of Abilene, Texas, and Shirley Parsley and husband Charles of Marlow; three brothers, B. Bill Matthews and wife Jaynette of Abbeville, La., Harry Matthews of Marlow, and Glen and wife Winnie of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and 16 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John Matthews, Dwayne Matthews, Joe Matthews, Bill Matthews, Steven Matthews and Blake Matthews.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith.
Family will greet friends immediately after service at Central Christian Family Life Center, 400 N. Waldron.

Eula Cravens
PARIS — Eula Cravens, 93, of Paris died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in Paris. She was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Subiaco. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church with burial at McKendree Cemetery north of Subiaco under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by two daughters, Nenah Fulmer and Susan Houser, both of Scanton; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glen Inman, Mark Fulmer, Sam, Jeff and Brad Schluterman and Ronnie Pack.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
