Harold Stephen Rethorn
Harold Stephen Rethorn, 81, of Bella Vista, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at his home. He was born May 13, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Henry and Belle Landson Rethorn.
He was a graduate of Bryant College in Boston, Mass. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Paris, and was recalled during the Korean War. He retired as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve after 22 years of service.
He worked in the pump business until he retired in 1984. He moved to Bella Vista 10 1/2 years ago from Madison, S.D.
He was a member of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church of Bella Vista, the Army Retired Officers Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Nine-Hole Golf Association, Midas Investment Club and the National Counter Intelligence Corps Association.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Rethorn; three sons, Craig Rethorn of Temple City, Calif., Richard Rethorn of Livermore, Calif., and Peter Rethorn of Findley, Ohio; a sister, Adele Andersen of Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church of Bella Vista with the Rev. Father Craig E. Gavin officiating.
Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to St. Theodore's Episcopal Church, 1001 Kingsland Road, Bella Vista, Ark. (72714).

Kathlyn Louise Rummel
Kathlyn Louise Rummel, 78, of Sacramento, Calif., and formerly of Bella Vista, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento. She was born July 28, 1922, in Chicago, to Julius H. and Kathlyn Lancaster Mickow.
She had worked as a credit union manager for Loyola University Medical Center for more than 10 years.
She moved to Bella Vista in 1981 from Forest Park, Ill. She was a member of Bella Vista Community Church, New Home Extension Club, Bella Vista Women's Club and Bella Vista Garden Club. She had served as county treasurer for the Benton County Homemakers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Rummel, in 1997.
Survivors include four daughters, Clara Ann Spiller of Naperville, Ill., Barbara Hoppe of Sterling Heights, Mich., Eileen Hunsucker of Indianapolis, Ind., and Virginia "Ginnie" Koscinski of Antelope, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, at Bella Vista Community Church with the Rev. Richard Lindman officiating.
Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital of Chicago; the Benton County Extension Homemakers Scholarship Fund; Bella Vista Community Church Choir; or to the volunteers at Bates Medical Center in Bentonville.

Duane R. Sells
Duane R. Sells, 66, of Bella Vista, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Bates Medical Center in Bentonville. He was born Sept. 17, 1934, in Whitten, Iowa, to Neil P. and Albina Peshel Sells.
He married Karlene Wilkerson on Nov. 21, 1968. The couple lived in Toledo, Iowa, where he was employed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International Corp. and retired after 35 years with the company.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Bella Vista four years ago from Ankeny, Iowa. He was a member of Bella Vista Crime Watch.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Karlene Sells; a son, Kerry David Sells of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Lisa Ilene Warnar of Toledo, Iowa; a brother, Leon Sells of Toledo; two sisters, Doris Valline of Toledo and Diane Hoffer of El Paso, Texas; and a grandchild.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, at Henderson-Overton Funeral Home in Toledo.
Local arrangements are by Bella vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 92 W. Sunbridge, Fayetteville, Ark. (72703); or the American Cancer Society, in care of Dorothy J. Mortensen, 4 Kensington Lane, Bella Vista, Ark. (72714).

Bual M. Smith
Bual M. Smith, 95, of Riverton, Kan., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Quaker Hill Manor in Lowell, Kan., following a long illness. She was born Dec. 6, 1905, in Hiwasse, to James Edward and Margaret M. Jones Ferrell.
She had been a patient at Quaker Hill Manor in Lowell for eight years. She had also lived in Ossian, Ind.; Panarama City, Calif.; Pittsburg, Kan.; and Hiwasse.
She married Bert M. Smith in 1930 in Pittsburg. She had worked as a nurse assistant at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg for several years in the 1950s. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert M. Smith, in 1969; two stepsons, Chester Smith and Levi Smith; a brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Sondra; several grandchildren; five nieces and nephews, all of whom provided for her care.
Visitation began at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, Kan., with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, at Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg with Jerry R. Kendall of the Church of Christ officiating.

C. Truman Steele
C. Truman Steele, 87, of Bella Vista, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Bates Medical Center in Bentonville. He was born July 10, 1913, in Marionville, Mo., to Clellie Thomas and Lucinda Rickman Steele.
He received a bachelor of science degree from Drury College in 1934, a master of science degree from the University of Arkansas in 1935, and a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Arkansas in 1938. He was a faculty member at the University of Arkansas from 1936 to 1937.
He was employed by Exxon and Imperial Oil Ltd. from 1938 to 1975. He was a faculty member at the University of Alberta from 1975 to 1978.
In 1980, he moved to the area from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and American Men of Science.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lindell Tettleton.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Steele; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Thomas J. and Barbara Steele of Inkom, Idaho; a sister, Elizabeth Hall of Crane, Mo.; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
Private burial will be at Bella Vista Cemetery.
Cremation arrangements are by Callison-Lough Funeral Service of Bentonville.

Ethel M. Sullivan
Ethel M. Sullivan, 90, of Bella Vista, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. She was born Sept. 15, 1910, in Williamson County, Tenn., to Clarence and Leta Fleener Fox.
She moved to Bella Vista in January 2000 from Franklin, Tenn. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Franklin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin O. Sullivan, in March 2000; two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Melvin L. and Tina Sullivan of Bella Vista; a daughter, June Kilby of Indianola, Miss.; a sister, Leah McGraw of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin, Tenn. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, in the First Baptist Church chapel in Franklin with Rick White and Jim Harvey officiating. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Local arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Franklin, Tenn., or to Bella Vista Baptist Church, 50 E. Lancashire Blvd., Bella Vista, Ark. (72714).

Lloyd W. Whitney
Lloyd W. Whitney, 86, of Bella Vista, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Cass County, Iowa, to Leon and Prudence Whitney.
He attended Simpson College and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1938 from Des Moines College of Pharmacy. He worked as a night manager and pharmacist for Walgreen Drug in Chicago until 1942.
He received his commercial pilot's license and flight instructor's rating through the Civilian Pilot Training Program, sponsored by the University of Chicago and Michigan State University. He was a civilian primary flight instructor for U.S. and British cadets at Carlstrom Field in Arcadia, Fla.
After World War II, he operated Carleton-Whitney Aero Service in North Attleboro, Mass., for five years. In 1952, he established Whitney Pharmacy in Woodward, Iowa, where he was the owner and pharmacist for 25 years.
He served as a local and county school board member for 15 years; was a founder and president of the Woodward Commercial Club and of the golf and recreation facility. He was honored as Lion of the Year, and was a 50-year Mason.
He and his wife retired and moved to Bella Vista in April 1978. He was a member of Bella Vista Community Church, Men In Action and the Nine-Hole Golf League.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Whitney, whom he married in 1942 in Punta Gorda, Fla.; two sons, Blake Whitney of Atlanta and Bill Whitney of Boston; two daughters, Nancy Whitney of Houston and Janet Whitney Duchesne of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Bella Vista Community Church with the Rev. David McKay officiating.
Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.

Loisann Armstrong
Loisann Armstrong, 68, of Bella Vista, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her home. She was born Nov. 18, 1932, in Williamson, Iowa, to George Vernon and Sarah Ellen Chamberlain Masters.
She and her husband, Richard "Dick" Armstrong, moved to Bella Vista 12 years ago from Carlisle, Iowa. She worked in management for U.S. West for 25 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista, Bella Vista Women's Chorus, and worked as a volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sarah Masters; a sister, Norma Nitzschke; and four brothers, Edward Masters, James Masters, Keith Masters and Caryol Masters.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Richard "Dick" Armstrong; two sons, Neil Scott Armstrong of Bella Vista and Daniel Jared Armstrong of Heildburg, Germany; a daughter, Julie Ann Grotewold of Oskaloosa, Iowa; three brothers, Burdette Masters of Williamson, Iowa, Thomas Masters of Fort Collins, Colo., and David Masters of Bloomfield, Colo.; a sister, Marcella Barnes of Evergreen, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista with the Rev. Larry R. Williams and the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating.
Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Music Department, 20 Boyce Drive, Bella Vista, Ark. (72714); or to Washington Regional Hospice, 34 W. Colt Square, Suite No. 1, Fayetteville, Ark. (72703).

William Ivan Blosser
William Ivan Blosser, 82, of Bella Vista, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, after an extended illness. He was born Nov. 27, 1918, in Wiley, Colo., to William Harvey and Lela Tweedie Blosser.
He graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in chemical engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant junior grade on the USS Belet in the South Pacific during World War II. He enjoyed annual reunions with his fellow servicemen throughout the country.
He married Erma W. Johnson in 1942 in Grant's Pass, Ore., where the couple lived and worked. He worked for the United States Gypsum Company for 38 years, where he served as an engineer, and later as works manager in various plants in California, Texas, Michigan and Oklahoma.
In 1968, the family moved to Wheeling, Ill., where he spent his last 15 years at U.S.G., working in product development.
He was a member of various United Methodist Churches, serving as committee member, committee chair and Sunday school teacher. He also served as a school board member and board president in Watonga, Okla.
He retired in 1983 and moved to Bella Vista. He and his wife were members of Bella Vista United Methodist Church, and were active in their Shepherd Group and on various committees. He sang in the choir for several years.
The couple enjoyed golfing and traveling to China, Alaska, Australia, Europe and throughout the United States. In Bella Vista, he was a member of the Nine-Hole Men's Golf Association and was president of Friends of the Library.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn; and a daughter, Kay Blosser Garcia.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Erma Blosser; three sons, Bob Blosser of Duncan, Okla., Bill Blosser of Oklahoma City and Dave Blosser of New Orleans; two daughters, Linda Petty and Carol Egan, both of Palatine, Ill.; two sisters, Grace Blosser Newell of Oklahoma City and Elizabeth Blosser Lamson of Bella Vista; 10 grandchildren; a great-niece and a great-nephew.
Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Bentonville. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, at First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff and the Rev. Larry Williams officiating.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
