Carl Emmit Douthit
September 30, 1915 - August 30, 2003
Carl Emmit Douthit, 87 of Lonoke, died Sunday, August 31, 2003, at Golden Years Manor. He was born September 30, 1915 in Gravelly, Arkansas to Clyde Earl and Beulah Yates Douthit.
He was reared and educated in Gravelly where he attended school through the ninth grade only. Mr. Douthit married Lois Hunnicutt on April 21, 1941 in Gravelly.
Mr. Douthit was an extremely successful investor and salesman. He traveled for the Conwood Corporation, formerly the Garrett Snuff Company on rural gravel roads in an automobile without air conditioning and power steering. He always carried a thermos jug of ice water and kept Vienna sausage and a tube of saltine crackers in the pocket of his car. He often said that he got his education in the lobbies of hotels listening to the advice of the older "traveling men" and the pleasure of his job diminished with the demise of the hotel.
Emmit's occupational career meant leaving his wife and daughter for weeks at a time but the job paid good wages for the economic times. He was a true "company Man" and never changed jobs. He instilled the same self-discipline (to never be a quitter) in his daughter, Peggy.
He retired in 1978, after 34 years as a salesman. During the years, 1944 to 1968 they lived in Russellville. They moved to Pine Bluff in 1968.
An elder in the 5th and Greenwich Church of Christ in Russellville, the congregation and it's work and activities were vital to his life. This philosophy continued when he and his wife placed membership in the Hazel Street Church of Christ in Pine Bluff and the Carlisle Church of Christ. He taught an adult Sunday school class for many years.
He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masonry, United Commercial Travelers and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
C. E. Douthit loved Coca-Cola and called it such. It was never a coke to daddy, his daughter Peggy remembers. To the end he insisted that he be dressed in a shirt and pants with his shoes on. Having lived through the depression, he was forever afraid that someone would steal his shoes.
A salesman from an era of business dressing, he refused to wear any kind of sweatshirt or athletic apparel. He vowed he would not walk around looking like he had pajamas on.
Peggy remarks, "to this southern girl - there will never be anyone like my daddy."
Mr. Douthit is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Earl and Beulah Yates Douthit and a brother, Loyd Douthit.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Hunnicutt Douthit of Carlisle; daughter, Peggy Dowdy and husband, James of Carlisle; brother, Floyd Douthit of Fort Smith; grandsons, Garrett Dowdy and wife, Ellen of Nixa, Missouri, Dustin Dowdy and wife, Teffany of Roswell, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Chris, Taylor and Alex Dowdy of Nixa, Missouri; nieces, Doris Stokes and husband Bill, Anna Holley and husband John all of Fort Smith.
Services are 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at Nola Church of Christ, in Nola, (Scott County) with Dr. Bob Dunaway officiating.
Burial by Ralph Robinson and Son in Parks Cemetery
