Hubert Otto Markum

April 11, 1916 - Sept. 13, 2007

CAMPBELL, Mo. — Hubert Otto Markum, 91, son of the late Odes and Evie Speakes Markum, died Thursday at General Baptist Nursing Home of Campbell.

Born at Brookland, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Merryman on June 28, 1934, at Lake City. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1997.

He was a retired farmer and attended General Baptist Church of Campbell.

Survivors include daughter, Doris Jean (John) Warren of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter-in-law, Mary Markum of Piggott; five grandchildren, John Mark (Sarah) Warren of New York, Holly (Dick) Searight of Collierville, Tenn., Mary Dawn Tichenor of Potts Camp, Miss., Martye (Todd) Nelson of Jonesboro and Monty Markum of Piggott; six great-grandchildren, Whitney and Matthew Searight of Collierville, Zachary Tichenor of Potts Camp, Amanda Tichenor of San Antonio and Jordon and Katie Nelson of Jonesboro; and a host of other family and friends.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Eugene Markum; two grandchildren, Curtis Markum and Sarah Warren; and four brothers, Gilbert, Herbert, Troy and Cletus Markum.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Bradshaw Funeral Home of Kennett, Mo., with the Rev. Jack Allen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens at Kennett.

Pallbearers include Junior Wiseman, Otis McCain, Frank Nall, David Wiseman, J.T. Moody and Clyde Batton.

Visitation was held Saturday.

Mary Virginia Warren

LEACHVILLE — Mary Virginia Warren, 76, of Leachville died Saturday, Sept. 15, at Monette Manor Nursing Center.

Born in Hornersville, she was the daughter of the late Elvis and Ida Thornton Rush and had been a resident of Blytheville and Bernie, Mo., before making her home in Leachville 38 years ago.

She was a graduate of Gosnell High School, a homemaker and a member of Leachville Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, J.H. Warren of the home; two sons, Larry Warren of Marmaduke and Carl Warren of Leachville; daughter, Reeba Jones of Leachville; and three brothers, Elwood Rush of Bernie, Mo., Ira Rush of Jackson, Mo., and Olin Rush of Marble Hill, Mo.

She also leaves 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Howard Funeral Chapel with David Lawrence and Wes McAdams officiating. Burial will follow in Leachville Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors Monday evening from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Benjamin F. Griffin

JONESBORO — Benjamin F. “Bennie” Griffin, 80, of Jonesboro passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at Lakeside Nursing Home where he had been a resident since April.

Bennie, as everyone knew him, served in the Army during World War II in Hawaii. After retirement, Bennie talked a lot about Hawaii and wanted to go back for a visit but his health wouldn’t let him.

He was a master plumber for many years and enjoyed his work. If he wasn’t working, he was always puttering around in his workshop or visiting friends and neighbors and listening to his country music. He was of the Church of Christ belief.

Surviving are his two sons, Gary Griffin and Bobby Joe Griffin, both of Brookland; two grandsons, Connor Griffin and Garrett Griffin; two brothers, Jimmy Griffin and Danny Griffin, all of Jonesboro; four sisters, Dathel Lee of Jonesboro, Betty Smith of Yucaipa, Calif., and Belva Murray and Sammie Bullock, both of Trumann; and many nieces and nephews.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, J.A. “Bert” Griffin and Mary Ethel Griffin; an infant brother and sister; sisters, Edna Inez Griffin and Tressie Juanita Sala; and the mother of his two sons, Sharon Griffin.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Pine Hill Cemetery with Curtis Shatley and Leland Worlow officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Emerson Funeral Home.

Hubert Otto Markum

William E. Ammons

Jonesboro — Dr. William Earl “Bill” Ammons, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.

Dr. Ammons was born in Jonesboro on Oct. 11, 1928, to Denny Earl Ammons and Alice Roy Ammons and lived here three years, formerly of North Little Rock. He was a graduate of Jonesboro High School and Arkansas State University where he received his B.S. degree. He received his D.D.S. degree from Baylor University Dental School in Dallas.

Dr. Ammons was in private practice for 35 years and then worked for the VA Medical Center in North Little Rock specializing in prosthodontia services. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and member of Park Hill Baptist Church in North Little Rock.

Survivors include a son, Jase Ammons and wife El­izabeth of North Little Rock; two daughters, Beverly Jones of North Little Rock and Jill Finken of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Dustin McClellan, Zachary McClellan and Allyson Finken; one nephew, Skip Smith and his wife Anna of Jonesboro.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Smith and an infant sister.

A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in City Cemetery at Jonesboro with the Rev. John Miles officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

No visitation is planned.

Ricky Lynn Bearden

RECTOR — Funeral services for Rickey Bearden, 49, who died on Sunday, Sept. 16, at his residence in Rector, will begin at noon Tuesday in First Baptist Church of Rector with the Revs. Michael Polk and Jack Bearden officiating. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 tonight in the church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Enos Bearden in 1998 and Mary Lucille Bearden in 2003.

Survivors are his wife, Theresa Cole Bearden of the home; two sons, Michael Bearden of Marmaduke and Steven (Cassie) Bearden of Rector; three brothers, Charles Bearden, Terry Bearden and Robbie Bearden, all of Rector; three sisters, Glenda Pruett of Rector, Margaret Costner of Paragould and Marsha Duty of Greenway; five grandchildren, Erica Nicole Bearden, Nick Hardin, Bailey Bearden, Braxton Bearden and Issac Bearden; and mother-in-law, Christine Cole.

Active pallbearers will be Justin Parrish, Dennis Stahl, William Owens, David Simmons, Will Simmons and Steve Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Tracer, Joe Carter and Mike Weber.

Geneva Ruth Files

MONETTE — Mrs. Geneva Ruth Files, 69, of Monette, formerly of Leachville, died Saturday, Sept. 15, at Monette Manor Nursing Home.

Born at Leslie, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Annie Layton Whisenant and was a lifelong resident. She was a retired nurse’s aide and member of the Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Mr. Paul Riley.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Ray Files of the home; three sons, Paul Wayne Riley, David Riley and Larry Riley, all of Monette; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Randy Files of Monette; one sister, Annie Belle Allen of Iowa; and nine grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Leachville Cemetery with the Rev. Pat Tucker officiating. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. until service time in Howard Funeral Service Chapel at Leachville.
