VELMA HUFF
Mrs. Velma Huff, 50, of Newport died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in Jonesboro.
She was the daughter of Eugene Junior and Leona Weatherford Junior of Rockford, Ill., and born on May 27, 1952 in Randolph County.
Mrs. Huff was a restauranet owner.
She is survived by her parents, Eugene and Leona Junior of Rockford, Ill.; two sons, Mike Strange of Racine, Wis., and Harold Woolbright of Alicia; five brothers, Bill Strange of Rockford, Ill., Bob Strange of Oakcal, Fla., Danny Strange of Warm Springs; Darrell Strange of Oakcal, Fla., and Joe Strange of Rockford, Ill.; two sisters, Gerri Frary of Newport, and Darlene Swimbank of Crossplain, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
Interment was Monday in Toombs Crematory in Jonesboro.

CELESTINE BYRD PHILLIPS
Mrs. Celestine (Byrd) Phillips, 89, of Newport died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in Newport. She was born April 3, 1913 in Grubbs, the daughter of Christopher Columbus and Charlotte Matilda (Woodruff) Byrd.
Mrs. Phillips was a retired postmaster, serving at the Grubbs post office 20 years, from 1957 to 1977. She was a member of the Mayflower Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Lewis E. Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by two nieces and caregivers, Cora Chapman and husband J.V. "Bugs" Chapman of Tuckerman, and Sharon Mears and husband, Harold Mears of Searcy; one other niece; three nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Monday at Walnut Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Duncan officiating.

NELLIE ISABELLE (WITHEY) WILLIAMS
Mrs. Nellie Isabelle (Withey) Williams, 95 of Bradford, formerly of Newport, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 in Newport. She was born July 18, 1905 in Center Ridge the daughter of Bill and Tennie Withey.
Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sigle Williams, in 1986; and four brothers.
Mrs. Williams is survived by three sons, Thomas Williams of California, Poley Williams of Center Ridge and Lodis Williams of California; six daughters, Lois Holder of Batesville, Margiree Barnes of Bradford, Katherine Wales of Marshall, Texas, Josephine Toddy of Bradford, Shirley Wilson of Newport, and Brenda Cole of Sulphur Rock; 34 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday at the Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Emmitt Campbell officiating. Committal service was 3 p.m. Monday at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Center Ridge Community in Morrilton.

ROSA LEE (ROSIE) CRAWFORD
Rosa Lee (Rosie) Crawford, 97 of Harrisburg, died Monday, Nov. 19 in Harrisburg. She was born Feb. 28, 1904 in Vandale the daughter of the late Zim Turner Rooks and Margaret Essie (Futrell) Rooks. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Ivy Crawford, Sr.; one son, W.I. Crawford, Jr.; one daughter, Josephine Edwards; one sister, Myrtle Aaron; one brother, Miles T. Rooks; and three great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three brothers, Thomas Rooks of Cherry Valley, Emmitt Rooks of Keiser and Edward Harold Rooks of Memphis, Tenn.; six sons, Evan T. Crawford of Mountain Home, Gerald T. Crawford of Harrisburg, Reginald L. Crawford of Harrisburg, Rodney R. Crawford of Nesbitt, Miss., Donnie D. Crawford of Harrisburg and Sidney O. Crawford of Jonesboro; three daughters, Mary Francis Emmons of St. Louis, Mo., Essie Marie Arnold of Harrisburg and Nona D. Bonham of Jonesboro; 31 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at the Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Captain Lovell and Rev. Jerry Kausler officiating. Interment is in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
Pallbearers are her 10 grandsons, Doyle Crawford, E.T. Crawford, Jr., Jerry Crawford, Randy Crawford, Brad Crawford, Neal Crawford, Bobby Bonham, Dana Bonham, John Bonham and Tye Arnold. Honorary pallbearers are her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, J.C. Smith, Jim Tom Butler, Sam Edwards, Carl Wayne Neugebauer and Mervin Brooks.

RONALD DENE HOOK
Mr. Ronald Dene Hook, 52 of Springdale, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale.
He was born Mar. 25, 1950 in Newport to Dene O. and Mary Carpenter Hook. He was a building supply salesman throughout his life. He was a member of the Home Builders Association, Sigma Chi, and attended the University of Arkansas where he played football for the Razorbacks. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He moved to Springdale nine years ago from Marion.
Mr. Hook is survived by his wife, Kathy Hook of the home to whom he was married on Dec. 24, 1986; his mother, Mary Wilkerson of Springdale; one son, Rob Hook; one daughter, Katie Hook of the home; two brothers, John Wilkerson of Kansas City, Kan. and David Wilkerson for Tampa, Fla.
Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sisco Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charlie Foster officiating. Interment was 1 p.m. Wednesday at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Newport.

E.J. WHEELINGTON
Mr. E.J. Wheelington, 74 of Harrisburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at the V.A. Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was born Oct. 7, 1928 at Chidester, the son of N.E. Wheelington and Viola (Daurghty) Wheelington.
He married Margaret Cummings on Sept. 13, 1950, and they recently celebrated 52 years of marriage. He owned and operated Wheelington Auto Parts in Harrisburg for 47 years and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Wheelington was a member of the Poinsett Masonic Lodge 184, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the World War II Cleanup and the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Scott Wheelington, five brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Wheelington is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Cummings) Wheelington of the home; two brothers, John Wheelington of Chidester and Connie Wheelington of Camden; a daughter, Carolyn Roland of Harrisburg; and a granddaughter, Rachel Rene Roland of Harrisburg.
Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Captain Lovell and the Rev. John Lindsey officiating. Interment was in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Duane Webb, Frankie Cole, Dirk Owens, Junior Criner, Sherman Drum, and Carl Cole. Donnie Crouch, Junior Fitzgerald, Jess Murray, Sr., Raymond Hawkins, Eldon Church, Dewey Grissom Richard Drum, Doyle Lancaster, Jimmy Owens, Terry Biggs, Darrell Bright, Jimmy Wiggington, Gene Norris, Van Terrell, Rodger Smith, Chuck Miller, Johnny House, Tim Cole, Donnie Faulkner, Glen Parks, Rod Parks, George Bates, and Bill Witt were honorary pallbearers.

HORACE LAYTON MONTGOMERY
Mr. Horace Layton Montgomery Sr., 91, of Grubbs died Saturday, December 21, 2002, in Newport. He was born Nov. 24, 1911 at Strawberry, the son of Ulyless Palmer and Francis (Pinkston) Montgomery.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Ballew's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
Mr. Montgomery was a 15-year member of the Grubbs School Board, having served as president. Mr. Montgomery sang in the church choir and was well known for his gardening.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Nancy Genevive Williamson; three brothers, Homer Montgomery, Troy Montgomery, and Everett Montgomery; and a sister, Virginia Profitt.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife, Elsie Lollar (Clines) Montgomery of Grubbs; two sons, H.L. Montgomery, Jr., of Grubbs, and Bobby D. Montgomery of England; a daughter, Sue Wise of Jonesboro; a brother, J.P. Montgomery of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Movidene Cutler of Chaffee, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, Jill Gibson, Danna Barkley, Angel Alexander, Mark Williamson, Charles K. Williamson, Steve Montgomery, Scott Sullins, Erika Scott, Layton Montgomery, Jordan Montgomery, and Landon Montgomery; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services was at 2 p.m. Monday at Ballew's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with Brother Hoover Lewis officiating. Interment was in Ballew's Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Loretta Gilliaum of Newport died Wednesday, Oct. 30 in Newport.

KENNETH S. BEARDEN
Mr. Kenneth S. Bearden, 80, of Newport died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Pinedale Nursing Home in Newport.
Mr. Bearden was a retired farm laborer and member of Diaz Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Myrtle Bearden; and a son, Billy Bearden.
Mr. Bearden is survived by his wife, Gladys Bearden; a son, Terry Bearden of Bakersfield, Calif.; three daughters, Dorothy Bearden of Missouri, Katrina Calhoun of Tuckerman and Sherry Dalton of Newport; three brothers, Woodrow Bearden of Newport, L.B. Bearden of Wichita, Kan., and Paul Neal Bearden of Illinois; a sister, Beatrice Strong of Blooming, Ill.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Randall Henderson, Tommy Calhoun, John Dalton and Billy Reynolds Jr.., Henry Johnson and Richard Greer.

BOYCE LEE SMITHEE
Mr. Boyce Lee Smithee, 60 of Newport, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001 in Newport. He was born Sept. 16, 1941 in Newport the son of Arlis and Pearl (Lassiter) Smithee.
He was a manager for Farmer's Oil Corporation for 18 years and was of the Baptist belief. Mr. Smithee served in the National Guard for several years and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Smithee is survived by his wife, Wanda Carolyn (Swann) Smithee of Newport; two sons, Kirk Smithee of Newport and Lane Smithee of Newport; his mother, Pearl (Lassiter) Smithee of Newport; one brother, Glenn Arlis Smithee of Newport; one sister, Betty Ruth Lamitina of Fayetteville; and one grandchild, Hunter Kirk Smithee.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Zane Clark and Bro. George Lettenmaier officiating. Interment is in Watson Cemetery. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Thursday.
Pallbearers are Dee Stuart, Dean Young, Charlie Allen, Tony Jones, John Hampton and Jerry Hopkins. Honorary pallbearers are the employees and director of Farmer's Oil Corporation, Bo Cooper and R.E. Gates.

FRANK ALBERT BAILEY
Frank Albert Bailey, retired Major General Arkansas National Guard, age 83 of Little Rock, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. He was born in Campbell, Mo. the son of the late Arkansas Governor Carl Edward Bailey and Margaret Leona Bristol Bailey. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
General Bailey was inducted into the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society in 1986. He is a former commander of the Arkansas Air National Guard and past president of his family farm implement business, The Carl E. Bailey Company. Bailey has been a member of the Arkansas National Guard since 1940 and had a distinguished career in aviation. During World War II, he was a flying instructor and was in B-25 Combat Training when the war ended. In 1954 he became the Deputy Chief of Staff of the headquarters of the Arkansas Air National Guard and active Chief of Staff.
He is survived by his wife, Doris H. Bailey of Little Rock; one son, Frank A. Bailey, Jr. and wife Paula of Littleton, Colo.; one daughter, Christy Chilcott of Las Vegas, Nev.; one step-son, Bob Rogers of Little Rock; one brother, Bob Bailey and wife Nancy of Little Rock; one sister, Elizabeth Benton and husband Sherbert of Conway; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Bailey is a former resident of Newport and the sister of Mrs. Jerry Jeffery of Newport.
Service to be announced to Ruebel Funeral Home.

OZZIE MCDONALD
Mrs. Ozzie McDonald, 99 of Fisher, formerly of Harrisburg, died Friday, June 7, 2002 at the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
She was born July 26, 1902 in Caney County, Mo., the daughter of Oscar Richie and Cora Lee (Palmer) Richie. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fisher Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen McDonald, one infant son, one daughter, Inez Prator, four brothers, and four sisters.
Mrs. McDonald is survived by two sons, Robert McDonald of Fisher, and A.R. McDonald of Arizona; one daughter, V.A. Ward of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. David Howard officiating. Interment was in Remmell-McCall Cemetery in the Remmell Community.

BETTY ANN HOLLIS
Mrs. Betty Ann Hollis, 59, of Newport died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Newport.
Mrs. Hollis was a member of Holden Avenue Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Presley and Gladys Newton; two children, Junior Hollis and Rosanell Hollis; two brothers; and a sister.
Mrs. Hollis is survived by her husband, Albert Hollis.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
