Hugh F. Boyle

Private graveside services were held Dec. 23, 1999 in Valley View Cemetery for Cottonwood resident Hugh Boyle. The service was conducted by Steve Tatum of the Verde Valley Seventh Adventist Church.

Mr. Boyle died Dec. 13 at the age of 88.

He was born in Mountain Home, Idaho March 21, 1911.

Mr. Boyle lived in the Verde Valley for the last 22 years. He and his wife, Priscilla owned the Motor Inn Trailer Park.

Mr. Boyle was a hard-working man of many talents who never hesitated to share them with others. A master electrician by trade, he worked for many years in the Seattle area for a company that built office complexes.

A devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Boyle will be missed.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Priscilla; two daughters, Janet Johnson of Seattle; Diane Rogers of Renton; three granddaughters, Sandy Shaw, Kellie Kluber, Katie Rogers and a step-grandson, John Rogers.

LaRue Maldonado

Camp Verde resident LaRue Maldonado died Dec. 17, 1999 at the age of 73.

She was born Jan. 29, 1926 in Logan, Utah.

Mrs. Maldonado was a member of the Camp Verde Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She enjoyed art and made many oil paintings for her family.

Mrs. Maldonado lived in Utah from 1926-1945 and lived in Phoenix from 1945-1986, before moving to Camp Verde.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Tony Maldonado; three sons and their wives, Larry and Cindy Maldonado of Glendale, Tony Michael and Judy Maldonado of Phoenix and James and Corrine Maldonado of Mesa; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Glen Langford of Cottonwood; a sister, Phyllis Farrell of Peoria; a brother, Harold Goldbrandsen of California; twenty grand-children and ten great-grand children.

A funeral service will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Camp Verde. Visitation will be at the church from 9-10 a.m. with arrangements directed by Westcott Funeral Home.

Leonard M. Payne

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Cottonwood for Leonard M. Payne.

Mr. Payne died Dec. 17, 1999 at the age of 90.

He was born November 28, 1909 in Urbana, Mo.

Mr. Payne was a farmer most of his life raising lettuce and Cantalopes for the Eastern Market.

He served on the Alhambra School Board, owned a school supplies business and was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Cottonwood.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; sons, George Payne of Camp Verde and Carl Payne of Glendale; a brother, Dale Payne of Phoenix; eight grand-children; 19 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were handled by Hepler Funeral Home in Camp Verde.

Lester L. 'Verne' Horne

Camp Verde resident Lester L. Horne, died Dec. 16, 1999 at the age of 64.

He was born in Ontario, Calif., Jan. 11, 1935.

Mr. Horne worked as a carpenter and was a veteran having served in the Korean Conflict.

He loved camping and four wheeling.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Rueben Funkhouser of Camp Verde; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Stewart Phelan of Phoenix; daughters, Sandra Horne of Camp Verde and Leslie Horne of California; sons McGallen, Christopher, Dillon and Christopher Horne all of Camp Verde; a sister, Barbara Gebhart of California; 11 grand-children; a nephew and two nieces.

Graveside services were held Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Middle Verde Cemetery with arrangements handled by the Westcott Funeral Home of Cottonwood.

Dorothy L. Duncan

Clarkdale resident Dorothy L. Duncan died Dec. 19, 1999, in Cottonwood.

Mrs. Duncan was born Jan. 19, 1928, in Pawhaska, Okla.

Mrs. Duncan enjoyed golf, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Joe. F. Duncan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Jan Duncan of Phoenix, Wayne Duncan and Margie Shelton of Clarkdale, and Jim and Barbie Duncan of Cottonwood; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Duncan, Great Lakes, Ill., Danny Duncan of Denver, Mike Duncan of Phoenix, and Kim, Richard, Shawnie and Dusty Duncan, all of Florida; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass for Mrs. Duncan will take place Thursday, Dec. 23, at St. Cecilia's Mission Church in Clarkdale. Father Michael Hurley will be the celebrant. Mrs. Duncan will be buried in the Valley View Cemetery with Westcott Funeral Home directing arrangements.

Willaim E. Hiatt, Jr.

Cottonwood resident Willaim E. "Bill" Hiatt Jr. died Dec. 16, 1999. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Hiatt was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Baxter Springs, Kan.

Mr. Hiatt worked for 10 years in the regional center for Social Security in Kansas City, Mo. He taught for 10 years in high schools in Oklahoma and Kansas.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in both Germany and Korea as an administrative clerk. He also served as air warden alert officer during World War II in his home town of Baxter Springs, Kan.

Mr. Hiatt is survived by two sisters, Marian F. Collins of Cottonwood and Geraldine Bartley of Sikeston, Mo. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Private family services have been held.

Donations in Mr. Hiatt's memory may be made to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood, 86326.

Westcott Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Eva Joan Engle Johnson

Camp Verde resident Eva Joan Engle Johnson died Dec. 8, 1999 in Flagstaff.

Born Sept. 10, 1920 in Prescott, Mrs. Johnson was 79.

She enjoyed doing cradle boards, sewing, beadwork, traditional cooking, camp meetings and revivals.

Survivors include her husband Peter Johnson; two daughters, Edith Rose Lewis of Payson and Teresa Coleman of San Diego; a son, Ernest Engle of Payson; 10 grand-children; three great-grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Dec. 11 in the Recreation Center of the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Camp Verde. Pastor John Davis officiated.

Winifred V. Pender

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Westcott Funeral Home for Cottonwood resident Winifred Pender.

Mrs. Pender died Dec. 10, 1999.

She was born Sept. 21, 1916 in Farmingdale, Long Island. N.Y.

Mrs. Pender had worked as a waitress. She was a member of TOPS.

She is survived by her husband, Teddy H. Pender.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 Grove St., Suite B. Prescott 86301.

Paul Bryan

Retired Sergeant Major Paul Bryan of Cottonwood died Dec. 8, 1999.

He was 81 years old.

Mr. Bryan was born June 16, 1918 in Warren, Pa.

He served in the U.S. Army for 28 years. During his career he worked in the Pentagon and was stationed in Greece, Norway and Vietnam. He retired from the military in 1973.

Mr. Bryan later worked in real estate and in television repair

He was an active member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks #1361 in Clarkdale.

He had served as chaplain, worked with bingo and was treasurer for several years. Mr. Bryan was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7400.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda L. Bryan; a son, William Bryan of Virginia; a daughter, Paula Gagne of Indiana; a stepson, Mark S. Cluff of Phoenix; three grandsons, Richard Gagne of Colorado, Jay Gagne of Indiana and Erik Bryan of California.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. in the Elks Lodge in Clarkdale.

A graveside service with military honors provided by VFW Post 7400 will follow at the Valley View Cemetery.

Alice M. Meyer

Cottonwood resident Alice M. Meyer died Nov. 30, 1999 at the age of 87.

She was born August 29, 1912 in Buffalo, N.Y..

Mrs. Meyer was a 40 year resident of Arizona and a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office in the Grand Canyon.

She was a member of the Verde Valley Christian Church.

Survivors include her three daughters, Alice E. Loftus, Laureen Nicholson and Judith Ann Meyer and also several grandchildren.

Private family services were arranged by Westcott Funeral Home of Cottonwood.

Phillip J. Paskett

Funeral services are scheduled Thursday for Phillip Paskett at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood at 2 p.m. Visitation will precede the service at 1 p.m.

Mr. Paskett died Dec. 4, 1999 in Phoenix.

He was 39 years old.

Mr. Paskett was born July 14, 1960 in Albion, Mich. He attended Star of the Sea Catholic School in Washington and Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood. Mr. Paskett was a member of the MUHS football team.

He was active in the Young Life Organization and worked for the forestry service in Camp Verde. Mr. Paskett also worked as a cabinet maker in Sedona and Flagstaff.

He was a member of the National Guard, Army Reserve.

Mr. Paskett loved the Verde Valley and was well known by many residents. Following his accident he fought long and hard and is now at rest.

Survivors include his daughter, Althea Hanson of Spokane; his parents, Shirley and Andrew Paskett of Florida; his paternal grandfather, Andrew Paskett of Michigan; three sisters, Julie Dodge and Lori Schneider of Cottonwood, and Lisa Edwards of Vancouver, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mary Erline Polich

Clarkdale resident Mary Polich died Dec. 4, 1999 in Flagstaff.

She was 73 years old.

Mrs. Polich was born Nov. 22, 1925 in Fredericksburg, Texas.

She was a retired school teacher and member of the Clarkdale Baptist Church. She was the guiding force for the annual Christmas Program. This year the other church members will continue the program and dedicate it to her memory.

Funeral services are scheduled for today at 2 p.m. at the Clarkdale Baptist Church. Pastor Tony Shebek will officiate the service. Burial will follow at the Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Edward; three daughters, Mary Ann, Charlene and Janice; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
