Arthur Johnson

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Verde Valley Christian Church for Arthur Johnson of Cottonwood.

The church is located at Zalesky Road and Arizona 89A.

Pastor Jim Hammond will officiate the service.

Mr. Johnson died Dec. 4, 1999 at the age of 79.

He was born March 15, 1923 in Chippewa Falls, Wis.

Relocating to the West, Mr. Johnson met and married Wilma (Billie) Goodson in 1948 in Boise, Idaho. The couple lived in Sacramento, Calif. and in Reno, Nev. where he joined the Teamsters union.

They eventually moved to Arizona and in 1959 relocated to Cottonwood where he continued to work for the Teamsters until his retirement.

Mr. Johnson loved motorcycles and was a member of the Verde Valley Corvette Club.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Allen.

Survivors include his wife, Billie; a son, James Clayton Johnson of Mesa; a stepson, Robert Goodson of Boise; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn M. Houston

A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Clarkdale Baptist Church for Cottonwood resident Evelyn Houston.

Mrs. Houston died Dec. 5, 1999.

She was born in Hanston, Kansas.

Formerly of Clapline, Kansas and Colorado City she and her husband of 66 years, Bert moved to Cottonwood in 1993.

She was a bookkeeper for Houston Welding Works for 22 years and was postmistress in Colorado for 10 years.

Mrs. Houston enjoyed golfing, bowling, crocheting, sewing, canvas needlework and painting. She was active in the Eastern Star, her church, the Red Cross and women's auxiliaries.

Mrs. Houston will be missed by family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Bert Houston; two children, Rhea Houston Demoy and Perry Dean Houston; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Blanche Houston and Vera Black and three brothers, Orville Jeffrey, Clarence Jeffrey and Kenneth Jeffrey.

Dorothy Busich

Long time Cottonwood resident Dorothy Busich died Dec. 7, 1999 in Mesa.

She was 86 years old.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Father Bud Pelletier will officiate the service and burial will follow at Cottonwood Cemetery.

She was born in Fuzina, Croatia to Anton and Catherine Kazlarich.

Mrs. Busich moved to Arizona from Croatia in 1925. She was a devoted mother and homemaker.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Mrs. Busich was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Busich in 1965.

Survivors include two daughters, Eva Bugala and Madelyn Bolstad of Phoenix; a son, Mathew Busich of Cottonwood; a sister, Josephine Cox of Glendale and one grandson.

Beatrice M. Smith

Beatrice Smith of Cottonwood died Dec. 8, 1999.

She was 78 years old.

Mrs. Smith was born in Blind River in Ontario, Canada.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Mountain View Untied Methodist Church. Pastor Ellen Willis-Conger will officiate the service.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of a Baptist minister, she came to the United States at an early age. She was a children's' librarian in New Jersey and was the director of the Hunterdon County Library System. Mrs. Smith also taught nursery school and worked as the high school librarian while living in Maryland.

She and her husband moved to Cottonwood six years ago. Mrs. Smith was an active member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church where she was a treasurer and active participant in the Methodist Women. She also served as the church librarian.

Survivors include her husband, C. Howard Smith; four sons, H. Randle Smith of Tempe, Robert C. Smith of Virginia, James M. Smith of Maryland and Barry C. Smith of Texas; four grandchildren and two sisters, Ann and Hazel of Florida.

Alvin Lloyd

Kingman resident Alvin Lloyd, died Dec. 5, 1999 at the age of 93.

Mr. Lloyd was born Dec. 1, 1906 in Bisbee.

He was a Camp Verde resident from 1990 until 1995.

Mr. Lloyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He owned the Ben Franklin Store and AZ Music Co. in Flagstaff, was a member of the Shriners Club and a member of the Elks Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary C. Lloyd in 1991.

Survivors include nieces Lorraine Hunt of Kingman and Beverly Burns of Prescott.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wayside Chapel in Sedona.

Elsie M. Tinnin

Flagstaff resident and former Cottonwood resident Elsie M. Tinnin, 88, died Dec. 5, 1999.

She was born June 18, 1911 in Mayer.

Mrs. Tinnin and her late husband Earl L. Tinnin, operated the Toonerville Trading Post on Hwy. 66 in Flagstaff for several years. They also operated motels and sold real estate.

Survivors include daughter, Helen Maben of Flagstaff; four grandchildren, George Maben, Jr., Janet Howell and Linda Howell both of Arizona and David Maben of Idaho; eight great-grand-children; two sisters, Ada Cox of Globe and Zavia Eckel of Las Vegas and a sister-in-law, Veta Tinnin of Flagstaff.

Funeral services were Thursday at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood.

Alicia Del Carmen Craft

Cottonwood resident Alicia Del Carmen Craft died Nov. 29, 1999.

Born Oct. 11, 1921 in Manila, Philippines, Mrs. Craft was 78.

On Dec. 28, 1945 she married Allan R. Craft, an American GI. They lived in the Philippines, and were parents of 10 children, one child died at the age of 7 months.

In 1958, Mrs. Craft and her children moved to California, to join her husband who had returned the previous year so that he could find work to pay for their passage to the United States.

The Crafts resided in California until 1996 when they moved to Cottonwood.

Mrs. Craft was a devoted wife and mother, and took great joy in her grand-children, great-grand-children and great-great-grand-children.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 55 years, Allan R. Craft; nine children, Tita Domendon, Joey Labo, Jesse Labo, Lilian Blanchard, Patrick Craft, Tony Craft, Mike Craft, Maria Towe, and Cathy Martinez and brothers and sisters, Ceaser Del Carmen, Herman Del Carmen, Lettie Ethridge, Baby Del Carmen, Carmen Dizon and Diasdodo.

A visitation was held Nov. 30 a the Westcott Funeral Home, and a funeral service was held Dec. 1 at the First Assembly of God Church. Pastor Lynn Peters conducted the service, and burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale.

Shirley Lorraine Swenson

A visitation will be held this evening at the Westcott Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. for Clarkdale resident Shirley Lorraine Swenson.

Mrs. Swenson died Nov. 29, 1999 at the age of 80.

She was born in Kenmare, N.D., Oct. 7, 1919.

Mrs. Swenson and her husband operated a family farm until their retirement and relocation to Clarkdale.

She was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church, the Sarah Circle, a Bible study group, Senior Singles Club, the Clarkdale Women's Club, and the Clarkdale-Jerome Elks Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her sons, Wade Swenson and his wife Gail of Moorhead, Minn. and Bruce Swenson and his wife Marlene of Clarkdale; a sister Edith Mae Hellem of Clarkdale; grand-children, Wade Swenson, M.D. and his wife Lisa of Coralville, Iowa, Jason Swenson of South Bend, Ind., Micah Swenson of Minneapolis, Minn., Timothy Swenson and Angela Swenson both of Clarkdale and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Swenson of Coralville, Iowa. Mrs. Swenson was preceded in death by her husband Ted Swenson in 1989.

Funeral services will be held Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View United Methodist Church, Pastor Ellen Willis-Conger will conduct the service.

Donations may be sent to Mountain View Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th Street, Cottonwood, 86326.

Jack Harbison

Cottonwood resident Jack Harbison died Dec. 1, 1999.

Born May 18, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas, Mr. Harbison was 55.

Mr. Harbison was a purchasing agent for many years at Allied Signal Aerospace in Torrance, Calif. He came to Arizona nine years ago.

He loved fishing, boating and baseball. For the past six years, he volunteered for the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce and headed the famous "Chuckwagon Barbecue Gang." He was also a volunteer at Verde Valley Medical Center driving the indoor and outdoor shuttle carts. He was involved in various other volunteer programs such as the Board of Directors for Sterling Ranch, a Christian ranch for mentally handicapped women.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Jacqueline Harbison; two sons, Jonathan L. Harbison and daughter-in-law Christine of Cypress, CA and Joel Harbison of Prescott Valley; a daughter, Juleen Harbison of Sterling Ranch in Skull Valley; three grandsons, Brandon Harbison of Cypress, CA, Matthew Harbison of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ryan Harbison of Prescott Valley; his mother, Katherine Leblanc of Cottonwood; a sister, Mackie Smith of Rim Forrest, Calif.; a brother, Pat Fowler of Fontana, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Maureen Harbison of Cottonwood and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Dec. 3 in the Mingus Baptist Church. Pastor Steve Baker officiated.

Memorial donations may be made to Sterling Ranch, PO Box 36, Skull Valley, 86338.

Arrangements were directed by Westcott Funeral Home of Cottonwood.

Susan Gatland Spangler

Cottonwood resident Susan Gatland Spangler, died Nov. 24, 1999 at the age of 48.

She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., June 20, 1951.

Mrs. Spangler was a social worker employed by the Department of Social Services.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Spangler; two sons, Slatom Spangler of Cottonwood and Cody Gatland of Phoenix; parents, Richard and Lillian (Bickford) Gatland of Virginia and a sister Judy Gatland of Massachusetts.

Private family funeral services were held with arrangements handled by Westcott Funeral Home.

Roy Shuert

A memorial service was held Thursday at the Westcott Funeral Home for Clarkdale resident Roy Shuert.

Mr. Shuert died Nov. 29, 1999 at the age of 82.

He was born in Detroit, Mich., Oct. 7, 1919 and raised in Des Moines, Iowa.

He served in the United States Army during WWII and was a retired employee of the State of Iowa.

A Clarkdale resident since 1992, Mr. Shuert was a member of the American Legion and of the Cottonwood Lions Club, having served as President of a Melvin Jones Fellow, one of the highest honors that a member of a Lions Club can be awarded.

Survivors include his wife Nedra Williams Shuert; step-son Roger Williams and his wife Anna of Illinois and many grand-children and great-grand-children.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Cottonwood Lions Club, P.O. Box 516, Cottonwood, AZ 86326.
