Charles E. Leavenworth
Cottonwood resident and World War II U.S. Nave veteran Charles Eugene "Chuck" Leavenworth died Feb. 10, 2000.
He was born Oct. 6, 1926 in Waitsburg, Wash.
Mr. Leavenworth was 73 years old.
He retired in 1978 from Western Union in Carson, Calif. where he was a shop manager. Mr. Leavenworth later worked as a technician for Hughes Aircraft Microwave Division, retiring in 1989.
He was past president of the Verde Valley Computer Club.
Mr. Leavenworth was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia Leavenworth and two sons, Roger and Jerry Leavenworth.
Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Leavenworth and Judy Grover of Cottonwood, Aletha Ewing of Oregon, Patricia Reeve of California; a son, David Leavenworth of California; two brothers, David W. Leavenworth of Washinton and Harry Leavenworth of Utah; a sister, Lois Shelley of Oregon; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Private family services were held.
Raymond W. Deeds
Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Verde Valley Evangelical Free Church for Verde Village resident Raymond Deeds. Pastor Bob Allen will conduct the services.
Mr. Deeds died Feb. 15, 2000.
He was born in Denmark, Iowa June 5, 1913.
Mr. Deeds was 86 years old.
He worked as an automotive parts salesman for 31 years in Waterloo, Iowa before retiring to Arizona.
Mr. Deeds was active in the Verde Village Home Owners Association for many years. He was a member and elder of the Verde Valley Evangelical Free Church.
Mr. Deeds enjoyed the outdoors and working in his garden.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vera Deeds, two daughters, Connie Walters of Idaho and Ramona Maya of California; one brother in Iowa; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Deeds was preceded in death by both parents, two sisters and one brother.

Don Epperson
Don Emery Epperson, father of Cottonwood resident Mike Epperson, died Feb. 13, 2000.
Mr. Epprson was very active in his church and served as director of the Texas Tourist Council for 24 years. He was also a former executive at Trans World Arilines for 23 years.
A viewing for family and friends is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Meldrum Mortuary at 52 N. McDonald St. in Mesa. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Latter-day Saints chapel, 1249 S. 48th St. in Mesa followed by a burial at Mesa City Cemetery.
Mr. Epperson was preceded in death by his wife, Irva.
Survivors include six children, Patti Webb of Utah, Steve Epperson of England, Diane Epperson of Mesa, Mike Epperson of Cottonwood, Pamela Arnett and Donna Hays of Gilbert; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Elaine Sanders
Cottonwood resident Elaine Marie Charlotte Sanders of Cottonwood died Feb. 13, 2000.
She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Sanders was born July 28, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minn.
She was a 37 year sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was an active member of the Alano Club. She held the position of activities director and was a leader of three groups.
Mrs. Sanders was a lover of plants and birds and enjoyed reading.
A pianist by age 12, she played church and theater organ. At age 55 Mrs. Sanders started her second career doing computer typesetting in Black Canyon City and later at the Red Rock News in Sedona.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Friday at the Alano Club, 2825 E. Hwy 89A in Cottonwood. a pot-luck supper is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Brown, Kathryn Dahlquist and Susan Kostka of Minnesota; two sons-in-law, David Dahlquist and Larry Kostka; a daughter, Nancy Riddiough of California; two grandsons, John and Jason Dahlquist; a granddaughter, Adrienne Brown; a stepson and his wife, John and Bonnie Sanders of Marana; the Sanders' children; several cousins and many close friends.

Delfina V. Lopez
Former Verde Valley nurse Delfina Lopez died Feb. 14, 2000.
She was born Aug. 7, 1913 in Las Cruces, N.M., but had been a resident of Arizona since she was 17 years old.
Mrs. Lopez began her nursing career at Marcus J. Lawrence Hospital in Cottonwood and continued her vocation at Phoenix Memorial and Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.
She retired in 1968.
Survivors include three daughters, Dolores Bartlett, Toni Olguin and Margarita Ghanvoni; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Michael Andrew Perkins
Prescott native Michael Andrew Perkins Sr. died Feb. 9, 2000.
Funeral services were held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prescott on Feb. 12.
Burial was held at the Perkins Family Cemetery
in Perkinsville.
He was born Jan. 22 1968 in Prescott.
Mr. Perkins went to grade school at Chino Valley and graduated High School in Prescott. He was an all-star wrestler and won third place in the state in 1986.
Mr. Perkins spent his life loving his family and his ranch work. He touched the land and his animals the way he touched our hearts. His big gentle heart, hands and spirit were so much a part of his great ancestry of the Perkins Ranch. Mr. Perkins was so proud of his family, his work and those who walked the land before him.
He was active in the Chino Valley Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod Church. He was a board member of the Yavapai Cattle Growers and ASCS. Mr. Perkins was a honorary member of the Scottsdale Charros.
He coached his children in Little League and taught them to love, laugh and dance.
Survivors include his wife Kelly; a son Michael "King" Jr.; a daughter, Julie; parents, Tom and Marge Perkins; three brothers, Tom of Tennessee;; Danny of Chino Valley and Clifford of Mesa; three sisters, Debbie of Chino Valley, Lyn of California and Cyndy of Chino Valley; three nephews, Shane, Aaron and Jacob; his father and mother-in-law, Lowell and Beg Dugan; four brothers-in-law, Pat, Bill, Danny and Mark; grandmother, Delores Becker; many aunts, uncles cousins and many friends.
Rather than flowers the family suggests a memorial to the Chino Valley WELS Lutheran Church building fund or the American Heart Association.
Mattie Diana Edens
Mattie Diana Edens died Feb. 11, 2000 in Clearfield, Utah.
She is survived by her sister and friend Judy Edens; her brother Jim Edens and his wife Judy Ann; her brother Preston Edens and his wife Karma; 13 nieces and nephews; and a multitude of grand-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her favorite aunt and uncle, Ruth and Preston James of Cottonwood, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a nephew, and a grand-niece.
She was born in Cottonwood, graduated from Brigham Young University and lived in Salt Lake City, North Salt Lake, and Clearfield, Utah.
Ms. Edens' life thrived in joy of service, tempered by strength and fortitude in the face of rheumatoid arthritis.
Ms. Edens believed that one caring adult could change the life of a child and she influenced a multitude of youth in her lifetime. She brought Girl Scouts to the young girls undergoing treatment at Shriner's hospital. She taught children and youth in the LDS church and was a second mother to her nieces and nephews, and a beloved great-aunt to the next generation.
She was a member of the LDS church and began serving as a primary teacher as soon as she graduated from primary. She also served as Sunday school teacher, ward bulletin coordinator, genealogy specialist, and visiting teacher.
She retired from the position of budget officer for the State of Utah and was a member of the Association of Business Women of America (ABWA).
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 at the Clearfield 13th LDS Ward, 231 East 300 North, Clearfield, Utah. The family is honoring her wish to be cremated.

Willis M. Phelps
Cottonwood resident and World War II veteran Willis Phelps died Feb. 14, 2000.
He was 82 years old.
Mr. Phelps was born Dec. 7, 1917 in Fairview, Okla.
A graduate of Wichita State University, he was a retired corrosion technologist for South Union Gas Company.
Mr. Phelps was a mason and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church.
Funeral services are scheduled Thursday at 10:30 a.m in the Mountain View United Methodist Church followed by a burial in Valley View Cemetery.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Westcott Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Robin Phelps of Cottonwood; one daughter, Ginny James of Phoenix; a son, Will Phelps of New York; three granddaughters, Jennifer Kwan, Megan James and Nicole Phelps and two grandsons, Adams and Cameron Phelps.

John D. Townsend
A visitation and funeral service has been scheduled for Village of Oak Creek resident John Townsend.
Mr. Townsend died Feb. 13, 2000.
He was 54 years old.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled Friday in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the Sedona Community Cemetery.
Mr. Townsend was born in Fort Worth, Texas on June 18, 1945.
A resident of Arizona for five years, Mr. Townsend retired from the position of vice-president at the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in 1995 following a 25 year career.
He was formerly the plant manager for the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in California.
Following his retirement, Mr. Townsend was a management consultant in the field of nuclear power.
He was a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and a member of the General Public Utilities Board for the state of New Jersey.
He was on the board of directors of the Village of Oak Creek Golf Association and was a member of World of Grace Church.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Martha Townsend; a son, David Townsend of California; a daughter-in-law, Trisha Townsend; a daughter, Shelby Bilyeu of California; a son-in-law, Scott Bilyeu; two step-sons, Myrick Buttler of California and Scott Buttler of Ohio; mother and step-father, Marge and Bill Michaleck of New Mexico; a step-mother, Gladys Townsend; a sister, Jayne Guerra of California; a grandchild, Morgan Taylor Bilyeu; two step-grandchildren, Derek and Kyle Buttler and a niece, Arianna Guerra.
Mr. Townsend was preceded in death by his father, Charles Townsend in 1999.

Betty Adams
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday for Clarkdale resident Betty Adams.
Mrs. Adams died Feb. 11, 2000.
She was 73 years old.
Mrs. Adams was born Oct. 29, 1926 in New Berlin, N.Y.
The service will be held in the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood at 2 p.m.
Mrs. Adams was a member of the bridge and pochino clubs at Lampliter Village. Her hobbies included camping, sewing and organ playing. She was a collector of Indian lore and was an animal lover.
Mrs. Adams will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and a first-class homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Adams; a son, Gary Adams of Prescott; two daughters, Maureen Thompson of Tucson and Julianne Henderson of Cottonwood; her mother, Burna Larrow of New York; three grandsons, Luke E. Shelton of Ohio, James Henderson of Cottonwood and Joshua Thompson of Tucson and a sister, Burnetta Parker of New York.
