Noble Mitchell
Mr. Noble Mitchell of Elfrida went to be with the Lord December 21, 1998.
He was born February 21, 1927 in Garfield, New Mexico. he attended school in Hatch, New Mexico and served aboard the USS Shangri La during WWII.
He moved to the Elfrida area in 1950 where he farmed and raised pecans. He also worked for the Bisbee mine and A.J. Gilbert Co. He was one of the originators of the Valley Little League. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and one step son.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Donna Mitchell of Elfrida; sons, Michael and Scott of Elfrida and Stephen of Benson, AZ. Also surviving are three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three step-children Beth Schoonover and Ron nelson of Wa. and Michael nelson of Cochise; 14 step-grandchildren; sister, Mary Underwood and brothers Wendell of California and B. Joe Mitchell of Elfrida. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Elfrida Baptist Church with Reverend John Grimes officiating.
Burial will follow at the Whitewater Cemetery
in Elfrida.

Milenka "Mamie" Bugen
Milenka "Mamie" Bugen, well-known native and lifelong resident of Bisbee, passed away at Copper Queen Community Hospital on December 23, 1998.
Mrs. Bugen was born in Bisbee June 13, 1907 to Katisa and David Milutin-ovich. While growing up in Bisbee, Mrs. Bugen attended the Old White House School and Greenway School in Warren.
Mrs. Bugen married Chris J. Bugen, owner and operator of "C. Bugen Grocery," 206 Naco Road (Slag Dump), Old Bisbee, in 1925. She was a homemaker, an honorary life member of St. Stephen Nemanja Church and a founding president for two terms of the "Circle of Yugoslav Sisters" church ladies auxiliary during the mid-1930s. A member of the Serb National Federation since 1925, she attended seven conventions representing three Western States, was a retired member of the Serb National Federation Trial Board, was Person of the Year in 1981, Serb Federation Lodge #142, a Lady Elk since 1934 and was a member of the Gray Ladies assisting patients and their needs in the County Hospital in Douglas. Mrs. Bugen was honored with a life membership to the Bisbee Council on the Arts and Humanities. She was a manager of The Palace Cafe, Main Street, Bisbee, during the World War II years, and later became owner/operator of Mamie's Drive Inn across from the Warren Ball Park.
Friends and loved ones say she loved cooking, assisting with St. Stephen's Night in Beograd Cele-brations, and rarely missed baking her famous "Mamie's apple strudel" for the Community Cake Auction.
Mrs. Bugen was preceded in death by her husband Chris J. Bugen in 1970, son-in-law Lon J. Moore and daughter-in-law Peggy Bugen. Survivors include a daughter Bette Bugen Moore, two sons, Sambugen and George C. Bugen, all of Bisbee, a grandson, Lonnie Moore of Chandler, and a granddaughter, Kate Wicke of Hereford. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, a niece and nephew of San Diego, a sister-in-law, a niece and two nephews of Fresno, Calif. Numerous other relatives survive throughout California, Texas and Yugoslavia.

Josefina B. Hernandez
Ms. Josefina B. Hernandez of Douglas died at her home December 21, 1998.
Born March 19, 1936 in Agua Prieta, Sonora and lived for many years in California prior to returning to Douglas the past year.
She is survived by her daughter Maribel H. Ybarra of Los Angeles, California; sisters, Herminia H. Escareno, Maria H. Lopez and Teresa H. Lopez of Douglas; brother, Guillermo Hernandez of San Luis, Rio Colorado. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Luis N. Chavez officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Pallbearers who will serve are Guillermo Hernandez, Hector Hernandez, Filiberto Lugo, Marco Antonio Elias, Ernesto Lopez and Efrain Elias.

Jesus J. Bailey
Jesus J. Bailey died December 17, 1998 after a long bout with cancer.
Jesus Bailey was born December 1, 1952 in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. He came to Douglas when he was 5 years old with his parents Charles and Maria Luz Bailey. He attended schools in Douglas and he served honorably in the U.S. Army from February 1974 through February 1978.
He was assigned to "B" Battery, 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery. He served in Wurzburg, Germany and Fort Riley, Kansas. He received the following decorations and citations: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter (M-16).
He worked in the capacity of Treatment Plant Operator III, Public Works Division in the cities of Douglas, Tucson, Glendale and Yuma, Arizona.
He is survived by his mother, Maria Luz Bailey of Douglas; sisters, Martha (Enrique) Yanez of Tucson; Janet (Bruce) Gernt of Tennessee; Gloria Bailey of Tucson; brothers, Mario (Janet) Bailey of Florida; Harry (Carmen) Bailey of Douglas; Patrick (Patricia) Bailey of Tucson.
He leaves 9 nieces and nephews: Yvette, Jennifer, Kelly, Tamara, Morghan, Rebecca, Elena, Ruben and Rick.
A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, 1998 at the Sacred Heart Chapel at 17th and I Ave. in Douglas with Father Jim Hobert officiating. A private family burial will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Macario 'Mac' Varela Morales
Mr. Macario "Mac" Morales of Douglas died December 20, 1998 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.
Mr. Morales was born March 10, 1930 in Douglas. He retired from the Phelps Dodge Mines in Bisbee and was a coordinator for the mentally challenged in Douglas and Naco, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dionicio and Laraza Morales; son, Alfredo Gregorio Morales and his brothers, Marcelino, Vicente, Gil, Ness, Marcial and Roman Morales.
Surviving are his wife, Maria V. Morales of Douglas; sons, Samuel (Dolores) Morales of Sierra Vista, Ness Jackson, Ray Jackson of Sierra Vista, Alfred Villalobos, Ray Villalobos and Louie Villalobos of Douglas; brothers Gregorio V. and Ruperto V. Morales of Douglas and a sister, Esperanza Dominguez of Perris, California; grandchildren, Sammy Jr. and Andriza Morales of Tucson, Levone Morales of Douglas and Trina and Cisco Morales of Sierra Vista. Also surviving is a great-grandson, Nicholas Morales.
A wake service was held at 7 p.m. today at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Primera Iglesia Bautista Del Sur, 1301 13th Street with Reverend Manuel Molina officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Charles William 'Bill' Stone
Charles William "Bill" Stone, 69, of Douglas passed away December 25, 1998 at the Life Care of Sierra Vista after a long illness.
He was owner of Greenworld Nursery for 25 years.
Bill was born September 6, 1929 in Tom Bean, TX to Eager Allen and Beulah (Trussel) Stone. he was youngest of 11 children. He opened Greenworld Nursery on Easter of 1973.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Helen Cora (Daniel) Stone and one son Dennis Elliot Stone. He is survived by his wife Adelaida "Eda" Stone; two daughters Doris (Harry) Mallet of Sierra Vista, Diane Brown of Douglas; one son James Robert "Bob" Stone of Sierra Vista and one sister Ruth Krish of Missouri; two step-daughters, two stepsons and four grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Cliff and Erica.
He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V.

Arnoldo B. de la Vara
Mr. Arnoldo B. de la Vara, a Douglas resident for 91 years, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.
Mr. de la Vara was born September 30, 1907 here in Douglas where he was an employee for Phelps Dodge for 39 years during his lifetime.
Mr. de la Vara is survived by his wife Elena de la Vara who resides at 1132 Seventh Street. They would be celebrating 65 years of marriage July 14, 1999. He is also survived by two sons, Ruben de la Vara of Tempe, Louis de la Vara of El Centro California and an only daughter, Rosa Molina of Hacienda Heights, California. Survivors also include one sister, Licha Rodriguez of Tucson; brothers, Alexandro of Phoenix, Raul and Alfredo of California as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 1999 at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Luis N. Chavez officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Margaret Aira Flores
Mrs. Margaret Aira Flores passed away December 30, 1998 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.
Margaret was born January 7, 1911 in Bisbee, Arizona. She was the second of eight children born to Italian parents, John and Minnie Aira. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Flores, Sr. January 31, 1972 and her grandsons, Matthew Flores October 1989 and Michael Flores October 1990.
She is survived by her son, Ben Flores, Jr. and his wife, Elsa Flores; granddaughter, Margie Flores of Kansas City, Missouri; two granddaughters, Sara and Leana; three great-grandchildren, all of Kansas City, Mo.
She is also survived by a sister, Sara Aira Diaz of Flagstaff, who is the last surviving member of the John Aira Family and numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret, along with her husband were founders of Ben Flores Home Furnishings in 1946. Ben Flores, Jr. and Elsa assumed operation of the business in January 1972 and Margaret continued to work along with them up to six months before her death.
Mrs. Flores was a life member of Fred Hilburn Auxiliary Unit 11 having worked her way up the chairs to serve as its president. She was also a charter member of the 8 & 40, Cochise Salon 815.
A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday January 4, 1999 at the Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Luke's Church with Father Jim Hobert officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery
with graveside services by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11.

Gloria Lopez Grijalva
Mrs. Gloria Lopez Grijalva, a former Douglas resident, passed away December 31, 1998 at the Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Mrs. Grijalva was born November 21, 1951 in Douglas where she attended local schools graduating from Douglas High School in 1970. She lived in Douglas until 1984 when she and her husband moved to Flagstaff where she was employed as secretary to the principal for the Flagstaff School District.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gustavo Lopez in 1980.
Surviving is her husband, Frank L. Grijalva of Flagstaff; son, Richard Francisco Grijalva; mother, Angela Lopez of Phoenix; sisters, Sylvia Lopez and Irma Moreno of Phoenix and Norma Moreno of Pennsylvania; brothers Robert Lopez of Douglas and Frank Lopez of Phoenix; mother-in-law, Jovita Grijava of Douglas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Blanca Gomez, Gloria Grijalva, Rudy Grijalva and Carlos Grijalva.
A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church. A funeral Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. on Tuesday also at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Luis N. Chavez officiating.

Mercedes G. Pinon
Mr. Mercedes G. Pinon of Douglas died December 30, 1998 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.
Mr. Pinon was born October 5, 1921 in Pirtleville, Arizona and has been a lifelong Arizona resident.
He served in the US Army during WWII receiving his honorable discharge July 20, 1945.
Mr. Pinon was preceded in death by his brothers, Jose Maria Pinon and Clemente Pinon; sisters, Teresa P. Molina, Inez P. Amaya, Francisca P. Smith and Dolores P. Burroughs.
He was a member of the American Legion, DAV, VFW and charter member of the Bushmasters club.
Surviving is his wife, Rosa Ruiz Pinon of Douglas; daughter, Petra Rodriguez Flores (Juan) of Phoenix; son, Jose Ruiz Pinon (Melissa) of Phoenix; sister, Isabel Walters of Douglas; brother, Ignacio Gonzales Pinon of California; grandchildren, Rosemary (Ricardo) Escobar, Maria Valdez, Frances (Antonio) Rodriguez and Juan Owen and four other grandchildren. Also surviving are 9 great-grandchildren.

Guadalupe Flores Perez
Ms. Guadalupe Flores Perez of Douglas died January 1, 1999 in Douglas.
Ms. Perez was born December 12, 1905 in Douglas where she has been a lifelong resident. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was preceded in death by her sister, Amelia Perez on April 18, 1997.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Grace Perez of Douglas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virginia Holland Paul
Douglas resident, Virginia Holland Paul passed away on January 7, 1999. She was born in East Orange, New Jersey on April 17, 1912. Preceding her in death were her parents, Walter and Alice Holland, her husband, Alfred Paul Jo. ("Pos" Paul), and her daughter, Sarah Paul Herr.
She is survived by her two brothers, Edward Holland (Weltha) of Annapolis, Maryland, Roy Holland (Jacqueline) of Gillette, Wyoming; her children, Connie Kazal (Albert S. Jr.) of Tucson, Wendy Glenn (Warner), Douglas and Barbara Chrisman (Michael), Visalia, California. She has 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Virginia lived at Paul Spur, Arizona for 37 years before moving to California, then to Tucson, then to Douglas, where she lived for her last years. She loved the arts and music and was active in several Douglas organizations.
Her granddaughter in the Douglas area, Kelly Glenn-Kimbro (Kerry) and granddaughter Mackenzie have been a lot of her social life in recent years.
She is also survived by many special friends in Douglas, including Shirley Gregory, Mary Robinson, Robin Brekus, Helen Bolweg, Amy Acquino, Liz Ames, Harriette Glenn and Margaret Glenn.
