Pilar Diaz

Pilar Diaz died Thursday Jan. 22, 1998, in Kingman. She was 75.

Mrs. Diaz was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Rockport, Texas. She was a retired heath aide for the Kingman Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Diaz is survived by: four daughters, Mary Ann Diaz of Kingman, Dorothy Silva and Dahlia Guerin of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jessica Schlorholtz of Clear Lake, Iowa; seven brothers, Pablo Esquivel of Leesville, La., Alfredo Esquivel, Ramiro Esquivel and Eddie Esquivel of Corpus Cristi, Texas, Jose Esquivel of Lubbock, Texas, Vincent Esquivel of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Ray Esquivel of Bakersfield, Calif.; nine granchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Diaz was preceded in death by: her husband, Abel Diaz, Sr.; and one son, Abel Diaz, Jr.

Memorial services were held Monday Jan. 26, 1998, in Kingman. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.

Carl Vernon George

Carl Vernon George died Friday Jan. 23, 1998, in Kingman. He was 74.

Mr. George was born Jan. 24, 1923, in Winchester, W.V. He came to Kingman 11 years ago from Colorado. He served more than 20 years in the Air Force before retiring in 1963 as a technical sergeant. He was also a life member of a VFW post in Colorado.

Mr. George is survived by: his wife, Carol George of Kingman; two children; three grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters and one great-grandchild.

No services are planned. Sutton Crematory will handle the cremation.

Eura Elizabeth Mullins

Eura Elizabeth Mullins died Thursday Jan. 22, 1998, in Kingman. She was 81.

Mrs. Mullins was born in 1916 in Pound, Va., and came to Kingman 16 years ago from California. She was retired.

Mrs. Mullins is survived by: four daughters, Ann Dunkin of Texas, Joyce Hirst of Kingman, Glen Burnie of Maryland and Bea Webb of Virginia; three sons, Ron, Ed and Larry Mullins, all of Kingman; one sister, Vergie Schultz of Hanover, Md.; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Richard Joseph Lopez

Richard Joseph Lopez died Monday Jan. 19, 1998, in Kingman. He was 87.

Mr. Lopez was born July 13, 1910 in Venezuela. He had lived in Kingman for 23 years, having come here from California. He was a mail sorter for the post office for 10 years, having retired in 1974.

He was reportedly the first American GI to step foot in Japan, attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a song writer. He received the following medals while in the service: Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the WWII Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, the Honorable Service Lapel Button (WWII) and the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar.

Mr. Lopez is survived by: one daughter, Jacqueline Lopez of Kingman; and a sister, Consuelo Lopez of Kingman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alejandra Lopez, in 1997.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 28, 1988, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home with a Rosary being said at 11:45 a.m., led by Deacon Rodriguez.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 28, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father James Alling officiating. Burial will take place in the National Cemetery in Phoenix.

Robert L. Walls

Robert L. Walls, a longtime Kingman resident, died Saturday Jan. 17, 1998, in Phoenix. He was 77.

Mr. Walls was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Ogemaw County, Mich., and came to Kingman in 1956. He was owner of the Sanitary Barber Shop and was active in the Kingman Lions Club and the Elks Lodge.

Mr. Walls is survived by: his wife of 48 years, Ruth; one son, Darwin Smith of Youngtown, Ariz.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Doug Walls of Sanford, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday Jan. 24, 1998, at Kingman Elks Lodge No. 468.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lions Club and Elks Lodge.

Audrey June Ginger Hunt

Audrey June Ginger Hunt died Sunday Jan. 18, 1998, in Yucca. She was 72.

Mrs. Hunt was born May 15, 1925, in Clayton, N.M., and came to Arizona 60 years ago from California. She had lived in Yucca for 10 years and was a retired restaurant manager. She was also a longtime resident of Kingman.

Mrs. Hunt is survived by: one son, Jeffery Hunt of Sinking Springs, Pa.; four daughters, Sharon Curry and Lynn Wiggins, both of Huntsville, Ala., Ricki Todd and Terri Poole, both of Yucca; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one cousin.

No services were held. Cremation was handled by Sutton Crematory.

Melinda Mercer Clarke

Melinda Mercer Clarke, a former Arizona resident, died Sunday Jan. 18, 1998, in Oklahoma City. She was 28.

Mrs. Clarke was born Aug. 21, 1969, in Seattle, Wash., and came to Oklahoma City one year ago. She was graduated from Winslow (Ariz.) High School in 1987 and was employed by Alamo Car Rental.

Mrs. Clarke is survived by: her husband, Bruce Clarke; her parents, Jim and Nancy Mercer of Dolan Springs; her grandmother, Florence Mercer of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; two sist ers, Deborah Kline of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Marianne Rupert of Mesa; two aunts; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday Jan. 23, 1998, at Christ Lutheran Church in Boulder City, Nev. Burial will be in Boulder City Cemetery.

The family suggests donations to the Epilepsy Foundation.

Loretta Jean Shafer

Loretta Jean Shafer of Chloride died Thursday Jan. 15, 198, in Las Vegas, Nev. She was 66.

Mrs. Shafer was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Phoenix and returned to Arizona 14 years ago from California. She lived in Chloride for 11 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Chloride Silverbelles and performed in that organizations melodramas. She attended Chloride Baptist Church.

Mrs. Shafer is survived by: her husband of 48 years, Raymond Joe Shafer of Chloride; three sons, Raymond Shafer Jr. of Chloride, Greg Shafer of Golden Valley, and Brian Shafer of Winslow; three daughters, Linda Caldwell of Kingman, Stacie Vaughan of California, and Kellie Snay of Kingman; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: one brother, John Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday Jan. 23, 1998, at the Chloride Baptist Church. Pastor Brett Carroll will officiate. Cremation will be handled by Nevada Funeral Service.

The family suggests donations to the Chloride Baptist Church, 4941 Payroll Ave., Chloride, Ariz. 86431.

Michael 'Mike' Rusinko

Michael 'Mike' Rusinko died Sunday Jan. 18, 1998, in Kingman. He was 93.

Mr. Rusinko as born Nov. 21, 1904, in Czechoslovakia and came to Kingman six years ago from California. He was a mold maker at a foundry and retired in 1968 after 57 years.

Mr. Rusinko is survived by: one son, Michael Rusinko of Kingman; one daughter, Dorothy Levey of Port Rickey, Fla.; one brother, Andy Rusinko of Pittsburg, Pa.; one sister, Ann Barko, of Pittsburg; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

No services were held. Cremation was handled by Sutton Crematory.

Frances Jones Mahan

Frances Jones Mahan died Saturday Jan. 17, 1998, in Kingman. She was 86.

Mrs. Mahan was born Sept. 11, 1911, in Hobbs, N.M., and came to Arizona 69 years ago from New Mexico. She had lived in Kingman for 42 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church's Esther Circle, the Mohave County Historical Society, Morning Glories Homemakers, Arizona State and Mohave County Cowbelles, and was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a former elementary school teacher in Arizona and New Mexico.

Mrs. Mahan is survived by: two sons, John C. Mahan of Peoria, Ariz., and Henry Mahan of Kingman; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert C. Mahan, in 1986; and one daughter, Jean Hazlewood, in 1991.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today - Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998 - at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 21, 1998. The Rev. Bob Cutlipp will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family requests donations to: St. Johns United Methodist Church, 1730 Kino, Kingman, Ariz. 86401; the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30329; or the Mohave County Historical Society.

Dorothy Clara Gunter

Dorothy Clara Gunter died Friday Jan. 16, 1998, in Kingman. She was 70.

Mrs. Gunter was born March 25, 1927, in Chester, Pa., and came to Kingman eight years ago from California. She was a homemaker and a member of San Pedro Lutheran Church in California.

Mrs. Gunter is survived by: her husband of 51 years, William "Bill" Gunter of Kingman; three sons, Will Gunter Jr., Joseph Thomas Gunter, and James Dennis Gunter, all of southern California; two sisters, Edith Meimen of Glendale, Ariz., and Joyce Sheehan of Pinellas, Fla.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998, at Sutton Memorial Funeral home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at Sutton. Dr. Ned A. Bertsch will officiate. Cremation will be handled by Sutton Crematory.

Carlene Winona Harms

Carlene Winona Harms died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Kingman. She was 65.

Mrs. Harms was born Jan. 24, 1932, in Orange, Calif., and came to Kingman 16 years ago from Oregon. She was a waitress and retired in 1991.

Mrs. Harms is survived by: one son, Thomas Blaine Martin of Florida; three sisters, Lois Calderon and Connie Clark, both of Kingman, and Jackie Baker of California; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998, at Desert View Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, also at Desert View. Pastor Walt Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Harriet E. Johnson

Harriet E. Johnson died Thursday Jan. 8, 1998, in Kingman. She was 91.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 14, 1906, in Russell County, Va., and came to Arizona 29 years ago from California. She was an IBM clerk with the McKesson Corp. in Oakland, Calif., and a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by: several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her husband of 34 years, Neils, in 1982.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, also at Sutton's with the Rev. Bob Cutlipp officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations to St. Johns Methodist Church Building Fund, 1730 Kino Ave., Kingman, Ariz. 86401.

Evelyn G. Watkins

Evelyn G. Watkins of Wikieup died Monday Jan. 6, 1998 in Wickenburg. She was 71.

Mrs. Watkins was born June 10, 1926 in Sweetwater, Texas, and came to Arizona from California 55 years ago.

Mrs. Watkins is survived by: daughter Christine Walker of Wikieup; son Dan Watkins of Wikieup; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 14, 1998 at the Wikieup Bible Church. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Kingman. Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wickenburg handled the funeral arrangements.

Virginia Behounek

Virginia Behounek died Thursday Jan. 15, 1998, in Kingman. She was 73.

Mrs. Behounek was born March 2, 1924, in Paducah, Ky., and came to Kingman 10 years ago from Illinois. She was a machine operator in the aircraft industry for 27 years and retired in 1986. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness congregation in Kingman.

Mrs. Behounek is survived by: one daughter, Jodi Fragassi of Kingman; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: one granddaughter, in 1990.

No services were held. Cremation was handled by Sutton Crematory.

The family suggests donations to the Jehovah's Witness congregation, 4335 N. Stardust Road, Kingman, Ariz. 86401.

Alfred E. Clenard

Alfred E. Clenard died Thursday Jan. 15, 1998, in Pinion Pines. He was 73.

Mr. Clenard was born Dec. 29, 1924, in Glendale, Calif. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was a draftsman and a member of the Elks.

Mr. Clenard is survived by: his wife, Phoebe Clenard of Pinion Pines; one son, Robert Campbell of Bullhead City; two daughters, Billie Casbier of Tonopah, Nev., and Dixie Young of Whittier, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: one brother, Art Clenard; and his parents.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998, at Lietz Fraze Funeral Home, 21 Riviera Blvd., Lake Havasu City. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday Jan. 21, 1998, also at Lietz Fraze Funeral Home. A gathering will be held after the service at the Elks Lodge in Lake Havasu City.

Julia Havatone

Julia Havatone of Peach Springs died Thursday Jan. 15, 1998, in Lake Havasu City. She was 62.

Mrs. Havatone was born Julyn 21, 1935, in Peach Springs and was a lifelong resident of that community. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Havatone is survived by: her husband, Delbert Havatone; one son, Drake Havatone; seven daughters, Donnita Selana, Drusilla Clarke, Debbie Goldenstein, Christy Case, Sharon Havatone, Ezelda Beecher, and Pamela Havatone; 25 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. All are residents of Peach Springs. She was preceded in death by: two sons, Elvis "Mellie," and Wendall "Sonny" Havatone.

Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Monday Jan. 19, 1998, at the Peach Springs gymnasium. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 20, 1998, also at the Peach Springs gymnasium. Burial will be in the Valentine cemetery.

John Richard Gibbs

John Richard Gibbs, 77, died Thursday Dec. 25, 1997, in Kingman.

Mr. Gibbs was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Kokomo, Ind., and came to Arizona 15 years ago from California. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and was a B-24 bomber pilot during World War II.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by: several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Joey.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Jan. 17, 1998, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home. Cremation is being handled by Sutton Crematory.
