Celia Rivas

1926-2002

Celia Rivas, of Willcox died Oct. 18, 2002 in Tucson at the age of 75.

She was born in Durango, Mexico on Oct. 21, 1926 to Carlos Aguilar and Refugio Medina.

Celia was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include her daughters, Juanita Rivas, Laura Rivas, and Ylda (Francisco) Corella all of Willcox; sons, Armando (Mary Lou) Rivas of Willcox, Jose (Sandra) Rivas, Angel (Isabel) Rivas both of Durango, Mexico, Ernesto (Ana) Rivas of Juarez, Mexico, David (Lucresia) Rivas, Victor (Lola) Rivas and Miguel (Deanna) Rivas, all of Willcox. Also surviving are numerous sisters and brothers along with 37 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Westlawn Chapel with funeral services today, Wednesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 10 a.m. at Westlawn Chapel.

Burial will follow in Sunset cemetery in Willcox.

Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary & Crematorium in Willcox.

Orville A. 'Sandy' Graham

1914-2002

Orville A. 'Sandy' Graham, of Willcox died Dec. 13, 2002 in Tucson at the age of 88.

He was born in Temple, Okla., on April 3, 1914 to Arthur Graham and Nora Cotner.

Sandy owned and operated Hill Top Produce Market in Phoenix and moved to Willcox in 1978. He loved to fish at Roosevelt Lake and San Carlos Lake; and he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Willcox Ward 1.

Survivors include his long-time friend and former wife Shirley Graham of Tempe; son Gary (Janice) Graham of Willcox, daughters Juanita Thrower of Ithaca, N.Y. and Laura Estrella of Tempe. Also surviving are his brothers Tom Graham of Rio Verde, and Al Graham of Carolina Shores, N.C.; along with seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Willcox LDS Church with viewing in the relief society room at 9 a.m. Burial took place in Sunset cemetery in Willcox.

Contributions may be made to the Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, 319 W. Grant, Willcox, Ariz., 85643.

Services were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary & Crematorium in Willcox.

Peter E. Brunner

1946-2003

Peter E. Brunner of Willcox died July 2, 2003 at the age of 56. He was born in Fargo, N.D. on July 27, 1946.

Peter served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was a member of IBEW, and a life member of the NRA and the Arizona Cattle Growers Assoc. Peter retired from Arizona Electric Power Co-operative and was a cattle rancher, for which he was a partner in the Historic Wien Family Ranch in the Dos Cabezas.

On Sept. 13, 1969 at the Wien Family Ranch, he married Carol Wien.

Survivors include his wife Carol of Willcox; sons, Raymond of Willcox and Justin of Tucson. Also surviving are his sisters, Lynda Gathman of Mesa and Donna Brunner of Phoenix; brothers, Albert (Leann) Brunner of Kasilof, Alaska and Ronald (Diane) Brunner of Ray, N.D. and his sister-in-law Edna Scott of Tucson and brother-in-law Walter Wien of Willcox.

His parents and one sister, Almeda, predeceased him.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at Westlawn Chapel. Cremation was conducted at Westlawn Crematorium.

Irene Overby Brown

1933-2003

Irene Overby Brown, a former Bowie resident, died Aug. 15, 2003 in Tucson at the age of 70.

She was born in Roby, Texas on Aug. 12, 1933. Irene was living in Tucson at the time of her death.

Survivors include her son Michael Brown of Redland, Calif.; and her daughter Brenda Brown of Tucson. Also surviving is her brother Sam Overby of Tucson; and her grandchildren Amanda Brown of Redland, Calif., and Joseph Hennen of Tucson.

Her parents and her husband Wade Brown preceded her in death.

Funeral Services will be held today, Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 N. Oracle, in Tucson.

Contributions may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 2819 E. Broadway, Tucson, Ariz., 85716.

Gary Higgins

1947-2003

Gary Higgins, of Willcox, a loving husband, son, father and brother, died on Sept. 28, 2003 at the age of 56.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1947.

Gary is survived by his wife Karen; mother Loretta; daughters, Dawn, Katy and Brandy; and his siblings Butch, Ginger, Wayne, Carol, Rocky, Brenda, and Diane.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Fred; daughter Amanda; and sibling B.J.

Gary was a very strong man who fought a long, hard battle. He is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Guillermo "Bill" Salazar

1912-2003

Guillermo "Bill" Salazar, of Willcox died at his home on Nov. 23, 2003 at the age of 90.

He was born near Klondyke, on Dec. 10, 1912 to Guadalupe and Teresa (Moraga) Salazar.

Bill served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion and Willcox Elks Lodge # 2131. He was a longtime cattle rancher.

Survivors include his sisters Clara (Rudy) Caballero of Tucson, Lola (Arnold) Sheffield and Christina (Alex) Pacheco both of Safford; and his brother E. G. "Tex" of Safford. Also surviving are his stepdaughters, Nina Lyerly McCarville and Zola Lyerly Powers, both of Tucson, and Sara Lyerly Humphrys of Willcox. Also surviving are 11 nieces and 10 nephews.

His wife, Dorothy Lyerly Salazar, preceded him in death in 1998. His parents; two sisters, Emma Salazar and Kate Osborne; and a brother Adolfo Salazar, also predeceased him.

Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 4, beginning at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Sunset cemetery.

Contributions may be made to Northern Cochise Community Hospital, 901 W. Rex Allen Dr., Willcox, Ariz., 85643.

Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.

Helen Hurtado Foster

1916-2002

Helen Hurtado Foster, a Dos Cabezas Pioneer, died July 29, 2002 in Willcox at the age of 85.

She was born in Dos Cabezas on Aug. 24, 1916 to Florencio and Trinie Hurtado.

Helen was a lifetime resident of Dos Cabezas, and assisted in the operation of Foster Sheet Metal with her late husband Lawrence, who preceded her in death on July 26, 1984.

Survivors include her brother Tiny Hurtado of Dos Cabezas; and her sister Laura Mae Logan of Tempe; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband and parents, one brother and one sister predeceased her.

At Helen's request, she will be cremated at Westlawn Crematorium and her ashes scattered with her husband Lawrence, and no memorial services will be held.

Contributions may be made to the Northern Cochise Community Hospital or Nursing Home, 901 W. Rex Allen Dr., Willcox, AZ 85643. Arrangements are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

Evelyn 'Evie' Mentzior

1928-2002

Evelyn 'Evie' Mentzior, of Cochise/Richland Ranchettes, died Oct. 14, 2002 at the age of 74.

She was born in Yelm, Wash., to Fred Reichel and Rose Weber on Feb. 28, 1928.

Evie came to the Richland Ranchettes in 1973 from Minnesota with her husband Lawrence.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence of Richland Ranchettes; son Mike (Jan) Zimmerman of Medical Lake, Wash.; daughter Lisa (Art) Hall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and four grandchildren. A sister Sally Brohm of Washington State also survives her.

At her request no services were held and contributions may be made to any Animal Wildlife Organization.

Arrangements were under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary & Crematorium in Willcox.

Carl Nyquist

1940-2002

Carl Nyquist of Willcox died at his home on Dec. 11, 2002 at the age of 62.

He was born May 26, 1940 in Detroit, Mich., to Edward Nyquist and Eva Cork.

Carl served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines during Vietnam. He moved to Willcox in 1977 and owned and operated the Montgomery Wards Store, was Superintendent of Maintenance for the Willcox Public Schools, worked as a carpenter for Phelps Dodge Mine and most recently work at the State of Arizona Douglas Complex as a carpenter.

Carl was a member of VFW # 9977 in Sunsites, Past Exalted Ruler of the Willcox Elks Lodge 2131 and had been a member of the Willcox Rotary Club.

On Sept. 8, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Carole L. Beal.

Survivors include his wife Carole of Willcox; sons, Edward (Lorene) Nyquist of Freeland, Mich., George "Lyter" (Laura) Sample of Glendale, Curt Nyquist and Carl Nyquist both of Ferndale, Mich.; daughters Lisa (Mike) Dermo of Carson City, Nev., and Dawn Nyquist of Willcox, and 12 grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Willcox Elks Lodge. Private cremation was conducted at Westlawn Crematorium.

Contributions may be made to the Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, 319 W. Grant, Willcox, Ariz., 85643 or UMC Cancer Center, 1515 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, Ariz., 85719.
