James Goodwin

James Elda L. Goodwin, 75, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 10, 1997.

Born in Cuba, Mo., Mr. Goodwin was retired as an over-the-road truck driver. He also served as a long-time ranger for the Fountain Hills Golf Club.

Mr. Goodwin also was a U.S. Army veteran from World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Linda Moore of St. Louis, Mo.; sons, Richard of Fountain Hills and Tracy of Phoenix; brother, Harold of Fountain Hills; and four grandchildren, Chapin, Camryne, Nicardo and Agustino.

Visitation was held Oct. 14, with a service scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Arizona Humane Society, 9226 N. 13th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021.

James Humble

James Humble, 73, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 23, 1997 at Hearthstone of Mesa.

Born Feb. 26, 1924, in Bothell, Wash., Mr. Humble was a U.S. Army veteran from World War II and worked as a food manufacturing sales representative for Kellogg Company during his career.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Humble of Fountain Hills; son, Robert Humble of Kirkland, Wash.; daughter, Linda Smith of Ashland, Ore.; sister, Roberta Battel of San Jose, Calif.; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Muhammad Ali Parksinson's Research Center, 222 W. Thomas Rd., Ste. 209, Phoenix, AZ 85013.

Paul Abele

Paul Milton Abele, a long-time Arizona resident who lived in Fountain Hills for the past five years, died on Nov. 4, 1997.

Mr. Abele worked in human resources at Motorola for 34 years and served on the Credit Union Board of Directors for 20 years.

Mr. Abele is survived by his wife, Anne; nine children; and 16 grandchildren.

He was a member of the Church of the Ascension. Mr. Abele served in the Air Force during the Korean War and will be missed dearly.

James Malloy

James J. Malloy, 70, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 29, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North.

Born Jan. 1, 1927 in Chicago, Ill., Mr. Malloy was a retired building engineer in the heating and air conditioning industry.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. Malloy of Fountain Hills; son, Eric J. Malloy; daughter, Terry G. Remy; sister, Mary Carmichael and Anne Eisler; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Dec. 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Fountain Hills Library Association, P.O. Box 17989, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

Phillip Dorchester

Phillip Dorchester, 64, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died Nov. 26, 1997 in Phoenix.

Born July 13, 1933 at Fort McDowell, Mr. Dorchester was a retired pump mechanic who worked at the City of Phoenix's water treatment plant along the Verde River.

He was a Marine Corps veteran from the Korean War.

Survivors include his daughters, Karen Ray of Salt River Indian Communty, Annette Beckman, Jessica Dorchester and Josetta Parker, all of Fort McDowell; sons Ron Dorchester, Phillip Dorchester and Eric Dorchester, all of Fort McDowell; brother, Cecil Dorchester; sister, Dixie Davis; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A service was held Nov. 30 at the Fort McDowell Brush Arbor. Interment was at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Ray Stout

Ray "Slick" Stout, 73, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 24, 1997 in Fountain Hills.

Born April 15, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Stout moved to Arizona in 1959 from Rochester, N.Y. He formerly lived in Paradise Valley before moving to Fountain Hills.

He was a Marine Corps veteran from World War II and played semi-pro hockey with the Akron Stars.

Mr. Stout also was a former vice president with First Interstate Bank and was vice president of Fireworks Productions International, Inc., which produces the annual July 4th fireworks show in Fountain Hills and many other locations.

He also was a member of Verde Vaqueros, Cabelleros del Norte (Minneapolis, Minn.), past president of the Sun Devil Club, American Legion Post No. 44 of Scottsdale, American Legion Post Nov. 58 of Fountain Hills, life member VFW Post No. 3632 in Tempe, Star Lodge No. 187, F&AM, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Hiram Club, El Zaribah Shrine, Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary, Paul Harris Fellow and Bolo Tie Society.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters, Pamela Hunt and Tracey Barnes; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Drew, Josh and Logan; he was preceded in death by a son, Todd.

A funeral service was held Nov. 29 at Glass and Garden Community Church in Scottsdale.

Visitation was Nov. 28 at Messinger Mortuary & Chapel in Scottsdale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Burns and Trauma, P.O. Box 80055, Phoenix, AZ 85060.

Jennifer H. Maland

Jennifer Hunter Maland, born April 17, 1965 in Chicago, passed away Jan. 7, 2003 – moving on to peace and serenity.

Her favorite occupation was as a white water guide, for numerous years, from the mountains of West Virginia to the high Sierras of Northern California. She had a creative mind and adventurous spirit, loving and living in the outdoors.

Jen was preceded in death by her mother Judith Perkins Maland, and survived by her father, David Maland (his wife Trish), her sister Susan Ludewic (her husband Will) and their children Cole and Kyle, her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Vetter (her husband Ed) and her fraternal grandmother Iola Maland.

A memorial service will be held at Fountain Park, Golden Barrel Ramada, on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. A celebration of life reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Niffer’s Wilderness Ventures Memorial Fund.

Conrad H. Schaefer

Conrad H. Schaefer, a 20-year-resident of Fountain Hills, passed away Jan. 25, 2003.

An Air Force veteran of World War II and former insurance salesman, Schaefer is survived by two sons, Robert and Gary; three grandchildren, David and Andrew Schaefer and Sandraclaire Little as well as and five great grandchildren.

Inurnment at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fountain Hills will be held at a later date.

Elwood Lutz

Elwood Lutz, 77, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 2, 1997.

Born Sept. 22, 1920 in West New York, N.J., he worked as a porter at the Fort McDowell Casino.

Mr. Lutz was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Francis Lutz; son, Edward Lutz, and daughter-in-law, Judy Lutz of Scottsdale; and three grandchildren.

There will be a private family memorial service.

Juanita Peters

Juanita L. Peters, 70, a former Fountain Hills resident, died Dec. 14, 1997 in her Holland, Texas home.

Mrs. Peters was a member of Christ's Church of Fountain Hills and a Red Cross volunteer in Fountain Hills.

Among the survivors are her daughters, Anita L. Gans of Fountain Hills, Sandra K. Peters of Acton, Ma., Wanda Bradley of Holland and Anna N. Peters of Montgomery, Ill., along with four grandsons, Adam, Aaron and Andrew Bradley of Holland and Ryan Gans of Fountain Hills; two granddaughters, Amy of Temple, Texas and Jessica L. Gans of Fountain Hills; and three great-grandchildren of Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer W. Peters, and son-in-law Richard Gans.

Burial will be in Batavia, Ill. Memorial contributions will be accepted by her family at 16841 E. Alamosa Avenue in Fountain Hills.

Vera Russo

Vera Elena Russo, musician and wife of Vincent P. Russo, M.D., died on Sunday morning, Dec. 14, 1997, at her Fountain Hills home.

She was born Feb. 13, 1927 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and attended the High School of Music and Art, becoming an accomplished violinist.

Mrs. Russo was with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Claude Monteux for 18 years, and after moving to Fountain Hills in 1979 became a member of the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, serving as associate concertmistress.

Mrs. Russo loved this community and enjoyed her life here, whether it was playing a round of golf in the beautiful desert weather or surrounding herself with the family to which she was so devoted.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Rina and Ken Creta, Val and John Stasik, Ginny and Mike Chin and Vanessa and Dan Davisson, all of Fountain Hills; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Vincent and Janie Russo of Paradise Valley; grandchildren Ken and Beth Creta, Lori and Steve Wedding, Vin Creta, Greg, Matt and Tim Russo, Chris, Nick and Gina Stasik, Mike, Brian and Frank Chin, and Elena, Dan and Mary Davisson; great-grandchildren Alexis Creta and Tyler Wedding; sister, Ann Showerman; and three nieces.

Services will be held at Church of the Ascension Thursday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m., with a reception following in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending contributions to the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, 3817 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale, AZ 85251.

Mrs. Russo's sense of humor is reflected in this poem she wrote as her own epitaph, which was discovered upon her passing:

When upon my grave you stand,
Smile broadly with Jack-Rose in hand;
And drink to life however long,
For life's a joke, a simple song.
It sings of youth and passes fast,
To praise fulfillment at the last.
When all is done, review my stand;
And toast again, my promised land.
Peace be with you...too.

Dr. Donald Honath

Dr. Donald H. Honath of Fountain Hills died June 17, 1998, at the age of 76.

Dr. Honath was born in Chicago, Ill. on April 7, 1922, the son of August and Bertha Honath.

Dr. Honath did his undergraduate studies at Albion College in Albion, Mich. and attended medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. His surgical residency was at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit, Mich.

He married Betty French in Detroit on Oct. 26, 1949. In 1952 they moved to Owatonna, Minn., where Dr. Honath became one of the early members of the Owatonna Clinic. Dr. Honath was an active member of the community, involved in Rotary Club and served as county coroner.

He also was an active member in the International College of Surgeons for many years, in which he served a term as president.

Dr. Honath retired in 1984 after a 32-year career as a surgeon in Owatonna. For the last 14 years Arizona was his primary residence with summers spent in Colorado and Minnesota.

Dr. Honath is survived by his wife, Betty Honath; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and James Buckner of Portland, Ore., Melinda and John Ewert of Austin, Minn., Allyson and Lolo Pena of Phoenix, Janine Honath of San Diego, Calif. and Leslie and Peter Hadley of San Diego; and nine grandchildren.

Friends of Dr. Honath are invited to a memorial service July 18 at the First Baptist Church in Owatonna, Minn. Memorials may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Jean Milos

Jean Marie Milos, 31, of Fountain Hills died June 30, 1998.

Mrs. Milos was born in Flushing, N.Y.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Skowron of Fountain Hills; father, Eugene Skowron of Fountain Hills; brothers, Andrew J. and Gregory S. Milos of Fountain Hills; sister, Marianne J. Milos of Minneapolis, Minn.; uncle, William Krzyzanowski of Woodhaven, N.Y.; and aunt, Barbara Kahill of Woodhaven, N.Y.

Visitation was held July 5 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment will be at St. Charles cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.

The family suggests memorial contributions to American Red Cross, Fountain Hills transportation services, Central Arizona chapter, 6135 Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix, AZ 85015-1896; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Robert Carter

Services for Robert Alexander Carter, nine months old, were held Oct. 23, 1998 at Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, Scottsdale.

He died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, in Phoenix. Robert Alexander was born in Scottsdale.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Angela; grandparents, Robert and Karen Fitzurka of Fountain Hills, Doyle Goins and Robert and Joan Carter; and great-grandparents Terry and Maxine Middleton of Fountain Hills and Ruth Goins.

Memorials may be sent to Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, 9590 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85260.
