Clint Foreman

Clint Foreman, an early Fountain Hills pioneer and active citizen, died Sept. 28, 1998. He was 74.

Mr. Foreman moved here in 1976 after retiring as an accountant with Hoosier Engineering Co. of Columbus, Ohio. He also served as treasurer and vice president for the firm and later was on its board of directors for many years.

An active member of Fountain Hills Community Church, Mr. Foreman did Christian mission work for two years, 1979 to 1980, in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Mr. Foreman also was active with the founding of the original Fountain Hills Library on Avenue of the Fountains and worked with Maricopa County officials to secure funding. He helped spearhead a local drive to fund the community library. He was a president of the Library Board and served as business manager of an early Fountain Festival art show.

Mr. Foreman was a member of the Chamber of Commerce's original Economic Development Committee to help promote business and industrial properties in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Foreman also served a four-year term on the Sanitary District Board of Directors in the mid-1980s.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Kate Suko; sons, James and Fred Foreman; his mother, Fern "Mimi" Foreman; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Fountain Hills Community Church, 15202 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Fountain Hills Community Church Foundation, 15202 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268 or to the American Diabetes Association, 9034 N. 23rd Avenue, Suite 8, Phoenix, AZ 85021-2850.

Green Acres Mortuary of Scottsdale handled the arrangements.

John Fiore Jr.

John S. Fiore Jr., 71, of Fountain Hills died July 20, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Dec. 7, 1926 in Orange, N.J., Mr. Fiore was employed during his career as a mold maker in plastics manufacturing.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, of Fountain Hills; sons, John Fiore III of Lavonia, Mich., Michael Fiore of Clark, N.J. and Minor Fiore of Somerville, N.J.; daughters, Teresa Marianino of Scottsdale and Diana Belfiglio of Fountain Hills; brother, Nick Fiore of New Providence, N.J.; sisters, Mildred Violetti, Helen Mauriello and Jeanette Amoroso, all of New Jersey; and eight grandchildren, Danny, Marissa, Marie, Johnny, Alex, Jillian, Mariah and Thomas.

A Christian wake service will be held at 11 a.m. July 22 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, Fountain Hills. Interment will be at National Memorial cemetery, Phoenix.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th Street, Tempe, AZ 85282.

Frank Edwards

Frank R. Edwards, 79, of Fountain Hills died July 13, 1998.

Born Dec. 9, 1918 in New York, N.Y., Mr. Edwards had worked during his career as a truck driver. He also was a member of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine during World War II.

Mr. Edwards was a member of Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills and the National Riflemen's Association.

Survivors include his brother, Robert F. Edwards of Fountain Hills; and sisters, Mimi Quinn of Fairfax, Va. and Roberta Edwards of Easton, Pa.

Visitation was held July 16, with a July 17 service at Church of the Ascension. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Animal Benefit Club of Arizona, Inc., P.O. Box 26627, Phoenix, AZ 85068.

Donna Richmond

Donna Richmond, 76, of Peoria, formerly of Rio Verde, died June 26, 1998 at her home.

Born March 31, 1922 in Boise, Idaho, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, R.L. Richmond of Peoria; son, Robert D. (Sandy) Richmond of Scottsdale; daughter, Sue Ann (Dick) Shipley of Poulsbo, Wash.; sister, Judy Graham of Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 1, at 3 p.m. at Rio Verde Community Church, 25603 Danny Lane, Rio Verde. Interment will be at Rio Verde Community Church Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Arizona Fellowship of Christian Athletes, P.O. Box 34466, Phoenix, AZ 85067-4466.

R.K. `Dick' Dunn

R.K. "Dick" Dunn, 80, of Fountain Hills died June 21, 1998 at Lutheran Hospice House of Gilbert.

Born Feb. 28, 1918 in Kenosha, Wis., Mr. Dunn worked for Johnson & Johnson for eight years and retired in 1984 as vice president and general manager for West Coast Grocery of Tacoma, Wash., after 18 years with the company.

After his retirement, he worked as a real estate broker in Hawaii, Scottsdale and in Fountain Hills with Fountain Oasis Realty for two years.

Mr. Dunn graduated in 1942 from the University of Wisconsin. He worked as foreman at Lakeside Bridge and Steel Company for eight years before serving as staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific for two years.

Mr. Dunn lived in Arizona nine years and in Fountain Hills four years before his death. He was a devoted husband and father. He also enjoyed golf and was an avid Arizona Rattlers arena football fan.

Survivors include his wife, Charli of Fountain Hills; son, Matt Baldauf of Phoenix; daughters, Kathy Plantz of Salem, Ore. and Sarah Baldauf of Chinle, Ariz.; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held June 26 at Family Burial and Cremation Center, Mesa. Interment will be at National Memorial cemetery of Arizona. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Lutheran Hospice of Arizona, 1325 N. Fiesta Blvd., Ste. 1, Gilbert, AZ 85233.

Joseph Brackett

Joseph E. Brackett, 73, formerly of Fountain Hills, died May 2, 1998 at the University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester, Mass.

Mr. Brackett is survived by his wife of 53 years, Yvonne M. (Wass) Brackett; a son, Kim A. Brackett of Goshen, Ohio; and a daughter and son-in-law, Alane R. and Barry Brown of Townsend, Mass.

Mr. Brackett was born in Henderson, Ky., on April 24, 1945, son of the late Frank and Ada (Perrin) Brackett. He had resided in Fountain Hills for 11 years before moving to Massachusetts last month. He also had resided over the years in Simsbury, Conn., Dover, Mass. and Louisville, Ky.

He worked as a district manager for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals based in Indianapolis, Ind. for 36 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Brackett was a member of the Fountain Hills Golf Club, where he was an avid golfer and had nailed a hole-in-one two years ago.

He had volunteered for the American Red Cross and was a member of the Kentucky Colonels, a fraternal charitable organization.

Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

Wayne Wade

Wayne J. Wade, 81, of Fountain Hills died May 5, 1998 at Forum Pueblo Norte in Scottsdale.

Born Sept. 30, 1916 in Sioux Falls, S.D., Mr. Wade was a retired restaurant owner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from World War II.

Mr. Wade belonged to the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. in Independence, Mo.; Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines, Iowa; Masonic Lodge, Fort Dodge, Iowa; and he was named an Honorary Kentucky Colonel by K.F.C.

Survivors include his wife, Faye E. Wade, Fountain Hills; and his daughter, Janet Wade-Reddick, Fountain Hills.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd. Interment will be at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crisis Nursery, 2711 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix, AZ 85008.

Kenneth Jenkins

Kenneth Jenkins, 67, of Fountain Hills died May 6, 1998.

Born June 24, 1930 in Ulysses, Pa., Mr. Jenkins was the co-owner of an independent telephone company in Shinglehouse, Pa.

He formerly resided in Shinglehouse and Pine, Colo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from the Korean War.

Mr. Jenkins was a member of Fountain Hills Community Church; Sharon Lodge No. 598 F&AM, Shinglehouse; Methodist Church, Shinglehouse; Conifer Community Church, Conifer, Colo.; and Scottish Rite Bodies, Murat Temple Shrine, AAONMS, Indianapolis, Ind.

Survivors include his mother, Lydia Jenkins, of Coudersport, Pa.; wife, Wanda Jenkins of Fountain Hills; sons, Kit R. Jenkins of Littleton, Colo., Dale M. Jenkins of Englewood, Colo. and Jeffrey S. Jenkins of Littleton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Pennsylvania and Colorado. Interment will be at Maplegrove cemetery in Shinglehouse.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Edward D. Luke

Edward D. Luke, 86, of Fountain Hills died May 10, 1998.

Born Jan. 9, 1912 in South Bend, Ind., Mr. Luke worked at Studebaker in South Bend for 30 years.

He also was retired as a highway supervisor in road maintenance.

Locally, Mr. Luke was a member of The Fountains, a United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anne M. Luke of Fountain Hills; son, Thomas E. (Debbie) Luke of Scottsdale; daughter, Judie Wilken (Barry) of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd., May 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at Messinger's.

Interment will be at Paradise Memorial Gardens, Scottsdale.

John Bridges

John Edward Bridges, 65, the brother of Fountain Hills resident George Bridges, died April 16, 1998 in an airplane crash.

Born in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Bridges of Phoenix was a retired engineer from Rockwell International.

He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Bridges; daughters, Kathy McCreedy and Carolyn Stonier; sons, Gary and Randall Bridges; brother, George F. Bridges; sister, Linda Hobby of Decatur, Ala.; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Bridges died when his experimental plane crashed in a thunderstorm near Lafayette, La. He was on his way to a national experimental aircraft convention in Lakeland, Fla. when the crash occurred.

He and his plane, a 300-mph Glasair III aircraft, were found April 17 in a swamp.

"He survived a lot of things in his life, but this is one thing even he couldn't survive," said his daughter, Kathy McCreedy of Chandler.

In 1942, at age 11, Mr. Bridges became the first person in the United States to receive penicillin after he came down with an infection that threatened his life.

The drug, used in England, was obtained with the intervention of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearts after the now-defunct Detroit Times wrote about the boy's plight.

At age 45, after a massive heart attack, Mr. Bridges had triple bypass heart surgery, followed by a quadruple bypass at 58 and knee replacement surgery in November. His daughter said he even survived a 1989 crash of one of his experimental planes.

Mr. Bridges' passion for experimental aircraft began in the 1970s when he built and flew radio-controlled models. He worked at North American Rockwell as a project engineer on truck and trailer axle design. While there, he built two experimental aircraft. After he retired in 1988, he built eight others.

A chapel service was held April 23 at Phoenix Memorial Mortuary Chapel on Beardsley Rd. The Rev. Don Lawrence from Christ's Church of the Fountain Hills officiated the service.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th Street, Tempe, AZ 85282 or to the Young Eagles Program, E.A.A. Aviation Foundation, Development Dept., P.O. Box 3065, Oshkosh, WI 54903-3065.

Josephine Holvenstot

Josephine Holvenstot, 79, of Fountain Hills died April 25, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Aug. 31, 1918 in Port Byron, Ill., Mrs. Holvenstot had worked as a secretary during her career. She was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her son, David B. Holvenstot; brother, Dean R. Helble; sister, Shirley H. Madden; and two grandchildren.

Laura Knerr-Hughes

A service was held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary April 26 for Laura Knerr-Hughes, 42, of Mesa, who died April 21, 1998.

She was born March 11, 1956 in Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include her mother, Charlotte Knerr; brothers, James, Glenn and Bill Knerr; and sisters, Diane Knerr and Lynn Cox.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Chrysalis Center for Battered Women, P.O. Box 1551, Scottsdale, AZ 85252.

William Curry

William Carson Curry, 81, of Winstom-Salem, N.C., and a former Fountain Hills resident, died April 10, 1998 after a short illness.

He was an active member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church and the Fountain Hills Golf Club.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Jane Tourner Curry, and two daughters, Boo Curry Burton and Sue Curry Whittaker, and her husband, Robert L. Whittaker.

Mr. Curry also leaves five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter who was born on the day of his death.
